Big Chair Developments…
+ CollegeAD says Jackson State AD Ashley Robinson is sticking with the Tigers & won’t be the next AD at Prairie View A&M. Further, JSU & Robinson have reached terms “for him to remain athletic director.” (link)
+ CollegeAD also reports on the three finalists for Long Beach State’s opening, all three of whom visited campus in the past week: Akron Deputy AD/COO Markus Jennings, San Diego Senior Assoc. AD/SWA/Chief Development Officer Marcy Lanoue & San Diego State Executive Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Academic Support Services Bobby Smitheran. No word on a hiring timeline. (link)

Tennessee joins the $200M club, with FY23 reports showing the Vols finished the year with $202M in revenue. That club for FY22, as reported by the Knight Commission, included only Ohio State ($251.62M), Texas ($239.29M), Alabama ($214.37M), Michigan ($210.65M) and Georgia ($203.05M). For context, UT set its all-time revenue high the previous fiscal cycle, with $154.57M in revenue and shortly thereafter AD Danny White set a goal to eclipse the $200M mark by FY27. A total of 28,127 donors contributed to a record fundraising year of $131.45M. When White arrived, there were 127 donors at the $25K+ level annually, now there are 500 such benefactors. Lots more on the financials in Knoxville from The Athletic’s Joe Rexrode. (link)

Another lawsuit at Northwestern, this time from an anonymous former Football student-athlete who says he was 17-years-old when he was hazed in 2015 at preseason camp in Kenosha, WI. From Sports Illustrated’s Richard Johnson: “Sex crimes involving minors in Illinois can carry more serious consequences. When asked whether law enforcement would be involved due to the fact that the former player was a minor at the time of the incident, a spokesperson for the law firm Levin & Perconti said ‘the attorneys working on this are civil lawyers, not prosecutors or criminal lawyers, and they can’t comment on that matter.’” (link)

Michigan Football HC Jim Harbaugh offered a unique take on NIL as it currently stands: “It’s here, and it’s so new. Give it a chance to work. We don’t know if it’s broke. Do we know if it’s broke yet? And we’re already trying to fix it? [...] It’s like the transfer portal. These people that are against it. You’re against something that allows a young man and his family to decide where he wants to go to college. And where he wants to continue college. Where he may want to go to college next. Why be against that? And the players and their families, they’ll tell you – I think if you really studied it, then there’s more good there than negative.” (link)

North Carolina Football HC Mack Brown voiced his frustration with the amount of tampering that has occurred since the advent of NIL: “I don’t think it could get any worse. It was awful the first two years. People were just absolutely paying cash to get guys off your team. That’s not what we’re doing. You don’t need to recruit a guy and then have to recruit him twice. I’m having to say in recruiting, ‘Let’s recruit guys that, when they play really good, they’re not going to leave us’. That’s a huge part of this. … We’re not there but I do think we’re getting better. We’re learning more about NIL, the kids are learning more. There’s some great things. It’s the best time to be a college athlete right now of all time. Now what we’ve got to do is put some guidelines in and get a consistent standard across the country so it won’t hurt our sport. Right now, we’ve got about 16 teams that are getting better players than everybody else. We need it to go back to where there is some equity in recruiting across the board.” (link)

UAB Football HC Trent Dilfer suggests a lifetime ban for coaches who coerce players to enter the transfer portal, telling On3’s Eric Prisbell: “Coercing players into the portal who had no desire to go into the portal. They are in my office in tears. ‘I don’t want to leave, but my dad is being told by the collective or by my high school coach, or by the frickin’ player director at Power 5 school, that I can make way more money with them than with [UAB].’ He’s crying. He doesn’t want to leave. It is tampering. [...] There has got to be a mechanism in place where the player personnel director of said school will never work in college football again if he coerces somebody from another team [into the portal with NIL promises] and it is proven. … We have evidence.” Dilfer also comments that other Group of 5 HCs are hesitant to call out Power 5 coaches. “Many of them would leave their existing job to take a coordinator job at the P5 because they’d make more money. So, they are scared of being blackballed. I don’t care about being blackballed. [...] I actually kind of like the fact that they’re scared that I might say the thing that has never been said – because I don’t give a sh*t. I don’t care what they think, and I almost feel I’m doing it on everybody’s behalf.” (link)

Sacramento Federal District Judge William Shubb denied a motion to dismiss a pair of lawsuits brought by volunteer assistant coaches: “In drawing all inferences in plaintiffs’ favor, it is not implausible that plaintiffs would have been paid a salary above $0 but for the NCAA’s adoption of the bylaw.” Also a key note from Sportico’s Michael McCann: “While Shubb advanced the antitrust claims, he granted the NCAA’s motion to dismiss certain other claims, including those concerning injunctive relief. He noted that the volunteer coach position rule has been eliminated, so there is no potential need to compel the NCAA to change a rule. Shubb also found the coaches hadn’t given reason to believe there is a likelihood of future harm, such as the NCAA reinstituting the rule at some point.” (link)

Michigan State receives a leadership gift commitment from former Spartan football student-athlete Trae Waynes and his wife, Kyra, for the Tom Izzo Football Building, the new 65K-square-foot addition to the Skandalaris Football Center and Duffy Daugherty Football Building. The Waynes’ gift contributes to the $52M raised so far toward the $67.5M needed for the facility. (link)

With a record 8,718 season tickets sold for football games at Bridgeforth Stadium this season, James Madison announces a series of updates to gameday operations “aimed at improving the fan experience.” Concessions will now operate with a “grab and go” format with a centralized payment area; wristbands will no longer be required to purchase alcohol and the Dukes have added five additional locations that sell alcohol; the launch of a new mobile fan app from SIDEARM will go live before the season begins; JMU is using Paciolan’s new “ALL-IN-1” pass and SeatGeek is the new secondary ticket partner of the athletic department. Also fans can expect connectivity improvements, new in-game enhancements, and a new voice from the speakers - the Dukes are holding tryouts for a new PA announcer following the retirement of long-time PA announcer Jack Cavanaugh. Sportico’s Anthony Crupi notes that due to the writers/actors strike and depressed ad markets, ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox are decreasing their fall ad rates; however, live sports continues to act as a lifeline. “NBC, which wrapped its upfront sales a week ago, secured yet another round of price increases for spots in the already costly Sunday Night Football package; last year, the average cost price for a 30-second unit bought in the upfront worked out to be around $840K a pop, making the NFL showcase the most expensive buy in primetime.” Additionally, NBC’s new Big Ten package helped bring in 40 new advertisers. For Fox, live sports now account for 77% of the time viewers spend with the network, with the NFL alone accounting for more than 55% of total viewing time last year, compared with 32% for CBS and 31% for NBC. Overall, Crupi reports, sports pricing looks to be up between 5% and 7% over last year’s rates. (link)

Realignment Rumblings: What’s Next?
+ JohnCanzano.com’s titular purveyor reports yesterday’s meeting of Pac-12 presidents/chancellors and ADs “covered its two high-priority needs: media rights and expansion. I’m also told to expect action in the ‘near future.’ Terrific, because what the conference needs more than anything right now is a public demonstration of proof of life.” Canzano also wonders whether SMU will be the first school to join the Pac-12. “San Diego State would probably want some of [the now-$34M Mountain West exit fee] covered by the Pac-12, which made them wait so long. Everything is negotiable, but that piece makes me wonder if San Diego State is a better candidate to be school No. 11 and join in 2025 vs. 2024.” Canzano believes the league should also take a hard look at UNLV, its academic profile notwithstanding. “As one veteran college-athletics industry insider told me on Thursday, ‘The CEOs need to get off their high academic box.’” (link)
+ ESPN’s Heather Dinich reports that a “Big 12 source told me their ADs had a meeting this a.m. and repeated what I told you here yesterday – 14 seems to be their best number. The question is ‘who wants to be the first to really be a part of the Big 12 now and join us? ... We've got room for one more.’” (link)
+ The Big 12 is ready to put its expansion targets “on the clock” toward a fast decision in order to hasten realignment for next year, Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde and Richard Johnson report. “Specifically, the Big 12 wants answers quickly from one to three Pac-12 schools: Arizona, Arizona State and Utah. Adding one is the most likely scenario, sources familiar with the Big 12’s game plan say, and that is the short-term goal.” (link)

Former Northwestern Defensive Coordinator Mike Hankwitz tells the New York Times he doesn’t doubt the accounts of hazing detailed by former players, but does question the scope of the allegations. Hankwitz says he neither witnessed nor heard of hazing from coaches, equipment managers, janitors or anyone else who spent time around the players. “Fitz wanted to do what was right by the players. Our first team meeting is team rules, one of which is zero tolerance for hazing. To say he sat by as this happened? I’m sorry.” Hankwitz adds the team has a longstanding players’ council that was elected by players and which could’ve brought concerns to former HC Pat Fitzgerald. “He wanted to give them ownership and leadership skills.” (link)

Ohio State AD Gene Smith acknowledges the frustration around NIL, remarking during Big Ten Media Days that he still isn’t sold on Congress being college sports’ savior, saying: “If we don’t do something, something will be done to us. I like the fact that Congress dropped their bills because – look at [Richard] Blumenthal, Cory Booker and Jerry Moran. They dropped those bills. That means they understand, and they want to do some work. The two days that we’ve had here [Indianapolis], we’ve worked very hard. A lot of information from our stakeholders. So now, it’s a matter of the NCAA and the working group taking that information and doing something with it. We have to, it’s not like, can we? No, we have to. I’m optimistic that’s going to happen because we’re in control of that. We’re not in control of Congress.” Finally, Smith contends revenue-sharing already exists. “It’s unreal; they have meals at their disposal. They get cost of attendance, they get Alston money. They get free education. So, it was already revenue sharing.” (link)

Maryland Football student-athlete Taulia Tagovailoa told The Athletic’s Audrey Snyder during Big Ten media day yesterday that one SEC school offered him $1.5M to transfer there. Tagovailoa’s rationale in remaining with the Terps: “It can be eye-opening, but I think for my situation — if I was in a different situation where maybe I didn’t have a brother in the NFL or maybe my parents, it’d be a different situation.” (link)

One former “star” Minnesota player is pushing back on Gophers Football HC P.J. Fleck’s defense of the team’s culture, telling Front Office Sports’ A.J. Perez that “the fact he is saying he has never used workouts as punishment is such bull.” The former player adds: “One of my teammates was feeling super sick and was coughing up blood. He went to the trainers beforehand and said he could not [get through it because] of how he felt. The trainers said it was nothing and forced him to do the workout. The trainers were too scared of Fleck to say anything.” Other former players have also told FOS they were pressured to return from injury when they weren’t ready and alleged that Fleck influenced the treatment of players.” While Gophers student-athletes at Big Ten Media Days defended Fleck, the former player remarks: “This stuff is real. If former players or coaches deny anything that has been stated here, they are simply lying through their teeth or weren’t there when it happened. I just want parents to really know what they are sending their sons into because I don’t want to see any more young athletes go through what we went through. That is not how football programs should be run.” (link)

CBS’ Matt Norlander follows up yesterday’s piece about men’s basketball coaches’ mental health and schedule concerns by reporting that significant changes are on their way. Among the changes the NABC is pushing for is a shortening of the transfer window from 60 days to 30. Baylor HC Scott Drew: “You can't get 363 coaches to agree on anything, but it's pretty unanimous that everyone wants a 30-day window.” Discussions continue about the timing of the portal, but the most popular option right now is to open it after the Elite Eight concludes and the Final Four is set. One source tells Norlander the coaches do not want to go another year with the calendar set as part of a DI Council-approved pilot program. “We're stuck in this ridiculous legislative cycle the NCAA has us pinned to. Because it falls under recruiting, the pilot program still has to get approved by dad. We get to drive the car but dad still tells us whether we go out tonight or not." Norlander, in fact, has obtained the latest revised calendar for 2023-24, which is nearly complete. It decreases the “total on-the-road recruiting days from 130 to 100. What's more, the ad hoc committee pushed for ‘dead’ days around every April, May, June and July weekend that includes a major holiday, in addition to Juneteenth. Those holidays are: Easter (in years when it falls after the season), Mother's Day, Memorial Day, Father's Day and Fourth of July. “ Full calendar and more from Norlander. (link)

Media Musings…
+ Comcast President Mike Cavanaugh says it’s “very improbable” the company would swap its Hulu stake with Disney in exchange for a stake in ESPN. “As you’d imagine, there are tremendous issues around tax, minority shareholders and structuring generally. So, I would put aside the probability that there’s anything inorganic that’s likely to happen around ESPN in particular.” (link)

Legal Ledger…
+ Larry Nassar survivors have filed a lawsuit against Michigan State, accusing school officials of making “secret decisions” about releasing documents in the case. Specifically, they allege MSU refused to give the state attorney general’s office more than 6,000 documents for an investigation into how Nassar was allowed to get away with his behavior, and later wouldn’t turn over emails about the board of trustees’ decision-making. The school has said the documents are protected by attorney-client privilege. The survivors say they are seeking accountability from the university rather than money. (link)
+ An Auburn economics professor has dropped his federal civil rights lawsuit against the university in which he accused the school of retaliating against him after he criticized a decision to continue a program that he asserted disproportionately benefited the athletics department.
