ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that Rice is targeting Vanderbilt Deputy AD Tommy McClelland, who before his time in Nashville served as AD at Louisiana Tech from 2013-20, to be the school’s next AD. “The deal is expected to be finalized in the upcoming days.” (link)

Nebraska AD Trev Alberts updates on the $165M Go Big Project: “It’s going well. It’s also been a challenge. I had to remind myself: We have 315,000 square feet. It’s a massive facility. One of the things we are trying to figure out, and Coach Rhule is very passionate about it, and we don’t want to do anything that disrupts the football team.” He adds that phase one should be completed “soon.” (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White chats with Volquest’s Brent Hubbs about the success in Knoxville during White’s first two-and-a-half years at the helm: “A lot of what we have done. I could’ve told you we were going to do it before I got here. I couldn’t have told you though how strong the fan base would respond to it. For us to be sold out in baseball, softball, to be sold out in Neyland Stadium when everyone around the country is talking about downsizing, that’s just crazy. The fan support and the scale of our fanbase is bigger and more powerful than I realized. … When I see the season ticket sales, the fundraising numbers, the amount of new donors we have been able to get in such a quick time period. Doing almost identical things that we did at my last stop which worked there and is why we are doing it. But it’s pretty impressive.” (link)

Texas A&M AD Ross Bjork says the school will have a new entrance “song” at Kyle Field to get the stadium “engaged.” The new tune, which TAMU “is currently working with an Aggie in music to create,” will be unveiled at Midnight Yell on September 2. (link)

Akron Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Jackie Wallgren and New Hampshire Deputy AD/SWA Michelle Bronner sit down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to share how they bring their core values into their roles at their respective institutions. Bronner, who has served the UNH Wildcats for 11 years, discusses the nuances of communicating with a new athletic director, while Wallgren, who has been at Akron for just over a year at the time of recording, speaks to the challenges of simultaneously learning and establishing culture at a new institution. Wallgren: “Whoever you’re working with on the campus they need to understand the why, and I think that's a really key part of [establishing a new culture]. So, picking those battles of when to make the change quickly…but if it's something that can wait maybe that's okay because change is hard for folks, and if you do too much too fast then you're going to lose that rapport that you've created with the new staff.” Bronner notes her new AD is very different from her previous AD, and “I was fortunate she likes to meet on a regular basis so we're able to every once in a while just get together and I have my list of questions that I formulate and a lot of it is ‘Do you want me to send this to you would you rather I come and speak to you? … What sort of information do you want me to just handle and take care of what at what point do I need to loop you in?” Full Q&A on ADU. RealResponse Founder/CEO David Chadwick sits down with Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz at the 2023 NACDA Convention to discuss the launch of Athlete Alert, powered by RealResponse, and the partnership with U.S. Integrity for professional and collegiate athletes, coaches, trainers, and support staff to safely and anonymously report gambling-related issues in real time. Chadwick outlines the education in the launch, what prompted the need, how it integrates into RealResponse’s offerings and much more. Chadwick on gambling issues: “It starts at the top. This is no longer just an athletics issue. Presidents and Chancellors have this on their radar…. Making this a focus, making it well-known so coaches are aware of it and student-athletes, too, because the reality is the ecosystem for many of these college athletic departments is not just the 400-600 student-athletes, it also includes coaches, trainers and staff. You’re talking about a group of more than 1,000 people, making sure they are aware of resources that are in place. Making sure they’re educated on what should be reported and what shouldn’t be reported, etc.” Full convo on Connect. (link)

USA Today’s Dan Wolken believes the hazing allegations at Northwestern should motivate every athletic department to evaluate its traditions to be sure similar occurrences aren’t happening on their campuses. “Northwestern players are supposed to represent some of the best and brightest people playing college sports. If their sense of what’s funny or what’s appropriate was that broken, every coach in the country should have some questions about what’s been going on in their own program or else they risk becoming the next Fitzgerald. … Hopefully Northwestern was this uniquely awful place and players at other schools haven’t been subjected to the same type of humiliation and abuse. But common sense says that Northwestern isn’t alone. There’s never been a better time to talk about that. And if you’re a coach or administrator beginning fall camp, the moment is now to put a stop to it.” (link)

Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker checks in with Youngstown State Deputy AD/Past NATA President Tory Lindley to discuss the rollout of the Inter-Association Standard of Care Toolkit. Lindley explains how the toolkit came to be, addresses the Transformation Committee’s recommendation to require schools to commit to a consensus-based care model and breaks down how the toolkit touches 16 healthcare domains, including peer-to-peer consultation opportunities and best-practice sharing. Lindley notes he was “really thrilled with the work that the Transformation Committee did as it pertains to a lot of areas but specific to student-athlete wellbeing and student-athlete healthcare. The synergies here were fantastic. It was really welcomed by all four of our member groups and member associations because what it did is it highlighted how important it is for the athletics healthcare administrator on every campus…to know that if the expectation is to attest annually that there has been a review and that the institution is meeting standards now that they have a place to turn where it's low to no cost…to be able to utilize the toolkit.” Full Q&A now available on Connect. Seton Hall has sent subpoenas to all 30 NBA teams seeking scouting materials and other documents concerning former Pirates men’s basketball student-athlete Myles Powell, who is suing the university over what he characterizes as gross negligence over the handling of his injuries. Sportico’s Daniel Libit notes the Memphis Grizzlies are fighting the subpoena on the grounds that releasing the information would cause “competitive harm” to its entire player scouting operation. From the Grizzlies’ motion: “There exists no good reason to draw Memphis Basketball into a dispute between Seton Hall and a former NCAA basketball player that involves secret text messages, under-the-table pain narcotic administration, and failure to properly diagnose an injury. … Like any professional sports team, the analysis of a potential player, and how said player fits into a long-term planning (or short-term acquisition) goal, is highly confidential. Indeed, the format in which Memphis Basketball compiles scouting reports and/or rates players, is competitively sensitive information.” (link)

Big Chair Developments…
+ CollegeAD says Jackson State AD Ashley Robinson is sticking with the Tigers & won’t be the next AD at Prairie View A&M. Further, JSU & Robinson have reached terms “for him to remain athletic director.” (link)
+ CollegeAD also reports on the three finalists for Long Beach State’s opening, all three of whom visited campus in the past week: Akron Deputy AD/COO Markus Jennings, San Diego Senior Assoc. AD/SWA/Chief Development Officer Marcy Lanoue & San Diego State Executive Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Academic Support Services Bobby Smitheran. No word on a hiring timeline. (link)

Tennessee joins the $200M club, with FY23 reports showing the Vols finished the year with $202M in revenue. That club for FY22, as reported by the Knight Commission, included only Ohio State ($251.62M), Texas ($239.29M), Alabama ($214.37M), Michigan ($210.65M) and Georgia ($203.05M). For context, UT set its all-time revenue high the previous fiscal cycle, with $154.57M in revenue and shortly thereafter AD Danny White set a goal to eclipse the $200M mark by FY27. A total of 28,127 donors contributed to a record fundraising year of $131.45M. When White arrived, there were 127 donors at the $25K+ level annually, now there are 500 such benefactors. Lots more on the financials in Knoxville from The Athletic’s Joe Rexrode. (link)

Another lawsuit at Northwestern, this time from an anonymous former Football student-athlete who says he was 17-years-old when he was hazed in 2015 at preseason camp in Kenosha, WI. From Sports Illustrated’s Richard Johnson: “Sex crimes involving minors in Illinois can carry more serious consequences. When asked whether law enforcement would be involved due to the fact that the former player was a minor at the time of the incident, a spokesperson for the law firm Levin & Perconti said ‘the attorneys working on this are civil lawyers, not prosecutors or criminal lawyers, and they can’t comment on that matter.’” (link)

Michigan Football HC Jim Harbaugh offered a unique take on NIL as it currently stands: “It’s here, and it’s so new. Give it a chance to work. We don’t know if it’s broke. Do we know if it’s broke yet? And we’re already trying to fix it? [...] It’s like the transfer portal. These people that are against it. You’re against something that allows a young man and his family to decide where he wants to go to college. And where he wants to continue college. Where he may want to go to college next. Why be against that? And the players and their families, they’ll tell you – I think if you really studied it, then there’s more good there than negative.” (link)

North Carolina Football HC Mack Brown voiced his frustration with the amount of tampering that has occurred since the advent of NIL: “I don’t think it could get any worse. It was awful the first two years. People were just absolutely paying cash to get guys off your team. That’s not what we’re doing. You don’t need to recruit a guy and then have to recruit him twice. I’m having to say in recruiting, ‘Let’s recruit guys that, when they play really good, they’re not going to leave us’. That’s a huge part of this. … We’re not there but I do think we’re getting better. We’re learning more about NIL, the kids are learning more. There’s some great things. It’s the best time to be a college athlete right now of all time. Now what we’ve got to do is put some guidelines in and get a consistent standard across the country so it won’t hurt our sport. Right now, we’ve got about 16 teams that are getting better players than everybody else. We need it to go back to where there is some equity in recruiting across the board.” (link)

UAB Football HC Trent Dilfer suggests a lifetime ban for coaches who coerce players to enter the transfer portal, telling On3’s Eric Prisbell: “Coercing players into the portal who had no desire to go into the portal. They are in my office in tears. ‘I don’t want to leave, but my dad is being told by the collective or by my high school coach, or by the frickin’ player director at Power 5 school, that I can make way more money with them than with [UAB].’ He’s crying. He doesn’t want to leave. It is tampering. [...] There has got to be a mechanism in place where the player personnel director of said school will never work in college football again if he coerces somebody from another team [into the portal with NIL promises] and it is proven. … We have evidence.” Dilfer also comments that other Group of 5 HCs are hesitant to call out Power 5 coaches. “Many of them would leave their existing job to take a coordinator job at the P5 because they’d make more money. So, they are scared of being blackballed. I don’t care about being blackballed. [...] I actually kind of like the fact that they’re scared that I might say the thing that has never been said – because I don’t give a sh*t. I don’t care what they think, and I almost feel I’m doing it on everybody’s behalf.” (link)

Sacramento Federal District Judge William Shubb denied a motion to dismiss a pair of lawsuits brought by volunteer assistant coaches: “In drawing all inferences in plaintiffs’ favor, it is not implausible that plaintiffs would have been paid a salary above $0 but for the NCAA’s adoption of the bylaw.” Also a key note from Sportico’s Michael McCann: “While Shubb advanced the antitrust claims, he granted the NCAA’s motion to dismiss certain other claims, including those concerning injunctive relief. He noted that the volunteer coach position rule has been eliminated, so there is no potential need to compel the NCAA to change a rule. Shubb also found the coaches hadn’t given reason to believe there is a likelihood of future harm, such as the NCAA reinstituting the rule at some point.” (link)

Michigan State receives a leadership gift commitment from former Spartan football student-athlete Trae Waynes and his wife, Kyra, for the Tom Izzo Football Building, the new 65K-square-foot addition to the Skandalaris Football Center and Duffy Daugherty Football Building. The Waynes’ gift contributes to the $52M raised so far toward the $67.5M needed for the facility. (link)

With a record 8,718 season tickets sold for football games at Bridgeforth Stadium this season, James Madison announces a series of updates to gameday operations “aimed at improving the fan experience.” Concessions will now operate with a “grab and go” format with a centralized payment area; wristbands will no longer be required to purchase alcohol and the Dukes have added five additional locations that sell alcohol; the launch of a new mobile fan app from SIDEARM will go live before the season begins; JMU is using Paciolan’s new “ALL-IN-1” pass and SeatGeek is the new secondary ticket partner of the athletic department. Also fans can expect connectivity improvements, new in-game enhancements, and a new voice from the speakers - the Dukes are holding tryouts for a new PA announcer following the retirement of long-time PA announcer Jack Cavanaugh. Sportico’s Anthony Crupi notes that due to the writers/actors strike and depressed ad markets, ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox are decreasing their fall ad rates; however, live sports continues to act as a lifeline. “NBC, which wrapped its upfront sales a week ago, secured yet another round of price increases for spots in the already costly Sunday Night Football package; last year, the average cost price for a 30-second unit bought in the upfront worked out to be around $840K a pop, making the NFL showcase the most expensive buy in primetime.” Additionally, NBC’s new Big Ten package helped bring in 40 new advertisers. For Fox, live sports now account for 77% of the time viewers spend with the network, with the NFL alone accounting for more than 55% of total viewing time last year, compared with 32% for CBS and 31% for NBC. Overall, Crupi reports, sports pricing looks to be up between 5% and 7% over last year’s rates. (link)
