Realignment Rumblings…
+ JohnCanzano.com’s namesake: “The Pac-12 is expected to present its media-rights deal to the remaining nine schools in the next couple of days. The timelines I’ve heard range from 24 hours to 72 hours. I’m setting the over/under at 48 hours — noon on Wednesday. I expect the uncertainty will create a swirl of rumors and fear mongering in the next couple of days. Be careful out there.” (link)
+ The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach dives into the travel details and accompanying concerns as UCLA and USC are preparing to join the Big Ten next year. UCLA’s process began with soliciting feedback from student-athletes about their needs for this change, which led to more mental health resources, providing breakfast and lunch being served to every athlete on campus, team meals instead of per diem on the road, academic advisors to travel with teams and more. Both have contacted professional teams to consult about adjustments to practice, travel and sleep schedules for athletic performance and sleep optimization. On travel itself, Bruins AD Martin Jarmond: “This is not more travel. In most instances, it will be the same number of trips that we take right now. And then a few (teams) will have a fewer number of trips. That’s one thing that I think people miss. Now the distances are farther, and that’s what our focus is going to be — how best to minimize the impact of the distance.” While some flights will be chartered, the accessibility of major B1G cities allows for commercial options and for teams in different sports to travel together. Lots more. (link)
+ JohnWallStreet chats with Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes about the impact of Colorado’s exit on the Pac-12’s looming media rights deal, with Crakes opining: “This could work out to be, at the very least, break-even, and perhaps it results in increased economics depending on expansion and things like that. […] Maybe the total deal value goes down a bit from what they were talking about with ten or maybe the terms are shorter contingent upon adding a school the partner signs off on. Or maybe it stays flat.” JWS believes the expansion may be in the league’s best interest if most of the content heads to streaming, whereas the opposite may be true if the deal is linear-heavy. (link)
+ Sportico’s Michael McCann pens on the potential “legal hook” of conference realignment that pushes towards continued consolidation. McCann points to Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch’s Alston opinion in which he emphasized a conference’s ability to impose restraints or rules within themselves, similar to how attorneys representing the Ivy League are arguing for their ability to prohibit athletic scholarships. McCann writing: “But if conference realignment brings about super conferences that resemble the NCAA in terms of controlling college sports or at least a sizable portion of it, Gorsuch’s distinction between the NCAA and a conference could collapse—and with it the judicial deference conferences currently enjoy. The potential consequences are far-reaching. Power Five conferences could eventually adopt rules recognizing college athletes as employees, while smaller conferences might stick to the student-athlete model. Some conferences might also explore revenue sharing with athletes or different rules for NIL. The degree to which a conference is confident its actions would withstand judicial scrutiny would shape that conference’s willingness to innovate.” (link)

As the 2023-24 season nears, Texas A&M AD Ross Bjork tells TexAgs that “we need to be consistent. [...] We finished 24th this year (in the LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup). We’ve finished higher at Texas A&M, and we need to get back into the top ten. If you’re in the top ten, you’re winning national championships.” Bjork also says he’s confident the new premium seating at Kyle Field will be ready in time for the start of the football season: “Our suites, the 23 new suites on the south end of Kyle Field, those will be complete – let’s just say kickoff is 6 p.m. on September 2 – those will be complete at 6 p.m.” Bjork says of upcoming facilities projects: “That (indoor track) building is going to be just a ‘wow’ factor for our track programs. And then we’re working on soccer and baseball. Those will be our next two projects up. … On Monday, the City of Bryan’s city council is approving an indoor tennis complex that will be home of Texas A&M tennis.” Finally, on NIL, Bjork notes: “NIL is part of the stratosphere and part of our ecosystem now. Eventually, whether Congress or the NCAA or somebody, we have to define that economic model because, until then, we’re going to be chasing and going in this cycle for a little while.” (link)

The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand points to Apple as a potential desired “strategic partner” for ESPN. Here’s the core of his thesis: “...the idea of being pre-loaded onto iPhones or other devices to lead in the next frontier of distribution is appealing to ESPN. Apple is known to be very finicky in its negotiations, but if anyone could close a deal with Apple, it may be (Disney CEO Bob) Iger, who was on their board. Apple’s plan in sports is to have global distribution through subscriptions.” More from Marchand: “...distribution with a small equity stake in ESPN is likely where this will end up. With Disney probably valuing ESPN in the $40 billion-$50 billion range, it would mean a company would need a $4 billion or $5 billion buy-in for a 10 percent stake in ESPN. The tech companies are the ones with the keys to distribution and the vaults to pay the entry fee.” (link)

CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio reiterates football scheduling strategy for the league in conjunction with streaming partner FloSports: “One of the things that’s very important to our membership is, aside from some early-season games, we want to remain a traditional conference as it relates to when our football games are played. We’re not looking to play games on Tuesday. We’re not looking to play games on Wednesday. We’re looking to provide a great campus atmosphere, great campus culture, and play our games on Saturday. And in doing so, the opportunities to provide national linear windows on Saturday for an FCS conference are very, very few and far between.” New for this season, all CAA kicks will include sideline replay monitors, as well as timeout countdown clocks. (link)

Purdue AD Mike Bobinski remains confident that Phase 1 renovations to Ross-Ade Stadium will be ready for kickoff, adding the Boilermakers could probably play a week from now if they needed to. The project’s cost has escalated from $30M to the $50M range and will continue to be fully funded by donors. (link)
|
Eastern Kentucky AD Matt Roan discusses whether a proposal to raise the entry for transitioning from FCS to FBS from $5K to $5M will be cost-prohibitive for EKU. “I don’t know if (the proposed $5 million entry fee) is necessarily directed at our conference. I can tell you that, as a collection of schools, we still maintain the ambition to compete at the highest level. … Certainly, for my president (EKU’s David T. McFaddin) and I, (the proposed fee) is something we are certainly aware of and we’ve had conversation about. It’s a planning and preparing (scenario).” (link)
|
The latest from Xavier AD Greg Chistopher on the potential addition of Football for the Musketeers: “I keep calling it a definite maybe. The program itself makes sense. The challenge we have is we don’t have a facility. We’re trying to balance the football idea with building a College of Medicine facility. We’ll try to make a decision by the end of the year.” Christopher also points to nearly $30M that’s been invested into the Cintas Center over the past decade: “We’re at a point we’ve probably gotten Cintas to about where it needs to be for today’s moment.” (link)

Rutgers has “entered a letter of intent” with Middlesex County to have a new state-of-the-art Multipurpose Community Venue be Rutgers Baseball’s new home stadium. Per NJ Advance Media, the construction, which is set to be ready for the 2026 season, will receive no funding from the Scarlet Knights. AD Pat Hobbs says the two parties will “continue to explore opportunities together” as the facility will be configured to host lacrosse and soccer contests. (link)

Thanks in part to a major gift from IU alumnus Jay Wilkinson, the Indiana football program will soon have a football-only weight room in Memorial Stadium’s North End Zone facility. It will be a part of the W. Jay and Nancy Wilkinson Performance Center in Memorial Stadium and should be completed by early 2024. (link)

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reports two more former Northwestern Football student-athletes have filed lawsuits alleging emotional and sexual abuse and hazing. One complaint names Assoc. HC Matt MacPherson as a witness to various forms of hazing. (link)
|
Sportico’s Daniel Libit talks with Harlan Sports Management President Bryan Harlan, who serves as Minnesota Football HC P.J. Fleck and former Northwestern HC Pat Fitzgerald’s agent. Harlan says of Fitzgerald’s situation: “It has been very unexpected, and it changed my summer. That is part of the job and you’ve got to do that. But to say I was caught off guard is an understatement.” Meanwhile, Harlan dismisses Front Office Sports’ reporting on Minnesota’s team culture as a restatement of allegations being pushed by a former faculty member. “He finally got a media person to bite on it.” Harlan tells Libit he has 20 college head coaches and 35 assistants or coordinators as part of his nearly 80-person roster of clients, and “at the end of the day, when you have so many clients, somebody has a problem at all times. The challenges my clients have gone through the last few days is a very important part of the job. You don’t find out about people until things get rough.” Lots more from Libit. (link)

San Diego State football season ticket sales are down 23% year-over-year, but it’s not a surprise to Aztecs Assoc. AD for Ticket Operations Bobbie Walker: “We knew that the second year we weren’t going to be able to keep pace. Obviously, with a brand new stadium, everyone wants to check it out and be a part of that season and say, ‘Hey, I was at the first game.’” SDSU is currently at a touch over 10,300 sold & still believe the “12,000 range” is within reach before first kick. There’s also mini-plan options this year, plus single game opportunities with both UCLA & Boise State playing at Snapdragon Stadium that should move the needle. (link)
