Realignment Rumblings…
+ Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff is expected to present details of a potential media rights deal to campus CEOs today, and the Arizona Board of Regents has set a meeting for this afternoon, presumably to discuss the presentation, though there is no confirmation of that. According to the AP, the meeting is expected to include presidents, chancellors and ADs. (link)
+ ESPN’s Pete Thamel cites one industry source as saying the “expectation [for this meeting] is these schools want clarity and details on a number and that a deal is going to eventually get done.” Regarding Arizona President Robert Robbins’ thinking, one source tells Thamel: “He does not want to be the one to break apart the Pac-12." Yet another source indicates: “I don't see any of them (the remaining Four Corners schools) having the fortitude to break up the Pac-12 themselves. They'll break as three. It's either going to be all three leave, or none leave." (link)
+ Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel: “The most powerful person in college athletics at the moment is a cardiac surgeon turned hospital administrator turned president of the University of Arizona. [...] While any school could choose to leave the Pac-12 and set things off, it’s Arizona that has emerged as the linchpin, and not just because its powerhouse basketball program would certainly fit well in the hoops-rich Big 12. The Big 12 is pushing hard, per sources, claiming it just wants one more addition in the hope of triggering urgency. That’s how tenuous it all is. That’s how tenuous this week may prove to be.” (link)
|
Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger: “Notre Dame and Under Armour are extending their relationship, agreeing to a new 10-year apparel contract that'll keep the Irish toward the top of college sports with a price tag of more than $10 million annually in cash and gear.” Of note, per Dellenger: “This one exceeds that amount and vaults the Irish to the top of college sports, alongside the likes of Texas (Nike), Kansas (Adidas), Louisville (Adidas), Ohio State (Nike), Nebraska (Adidas) and Michigan (Nike) — all schools with deals believed to range from $8-10 million a year.” No comment from either camp. Memphis AD Laird Veatch talks with the Commercial Appeal’s Mark Giannotto about the Tigers’ positioning in regards to conference realignment, Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium renovations, football ticket sales and more. Veatch explains he’s been “cautious” about what he’s said regarding realignment so far “because I want to do what’s best for Memphis and the process. … I feel like we’re in the conversation and we’ve never been better positioned than we are today. Beyond that, I’d rather not get into a lot of the discussion.” The university continues to work with the city and Populous on renovations to Liberty Stadium, and Veatch says: “They’ve included us in several of the meetings, allowed us to have real input and perspective in it, and it’s moving forward in that process as it should. … In the end, big picture, I want our stadium to look like we belong at the highest levels of college football. At the detail level, I want that to mean our players and our fans have the type of experience that you would expect at the highest levels of college football.” On football ticket sales: “We’re not quite back to where we were last year, but we have seen more momentum and progress in recent weeks as you come closer to the season, and that’s typically what happens here.” (link)

Florida AD Scott Stricklin joins Sports Scene’s Steve Russell to discuss renovations to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium and says there is “nothing off the drawing board,” but the Gators’ current focus is on renovating The Swamp rather than building a new stadium. “The focus is on the current facility. I think there’s a lot of history, a lot of tradition. The location matters, I believe. It’s interesting, the oldest NFL stadium is Green Bay's Lambeau Field, and it was built in the late '50s. I think Vandy is the only SEC stadium that's been built since then, but…most college stadiums are two, three, four decades older than the youngest NFL stadiums. There’s something sacred about that site, the history, that's going on there. You think about all the great games that have taken place at Steve Spurrier Florida Field. It would have to be something really compelling that comes out of the process for us to say let's go build something new in a different location. I'm not saying that that's been completely ruled out, I'm just saying that our focus is on the current site.” Full interview. (link)

Power 5 schools account for seven of the 43 DI ADs who began or are about to begin their current position since July 1, 2022, SBJ’s Michael Smith notes, adding: “It is a far more stable time than it was a year ago at this point, when the P5 made up 18% of the changes over the previous 12 months.” More stats from Smith: 15 ADs out of 43 who started in the past year were serving in the same capacity at their most recent job; 14 DI schools “are without an AD (as of press time), a vacancy rate that is consistent with recent summers.” Just two of those chairs (USC and Iowa) are at Power 5 schools; 13 ADs of the 57 who left their job since July 1, 2022, cited retirement as the reason, making it the most popular reason for the change; the CAA has five new ADs, the most of any conference; three ADs left the industry altogether; and two new/incoming ADs (Notre Dame’s Pete Bevacqua and IUPUI’s Luke Bosso) came from outside college sports. + Auburn introduces six new/upgraded field-level suite experiences at Jordan-Hare Stadium for the upcoming football season. These new suites, in partnership with RevelXP, will each feature televisions, fans, high-top seating, drink rails, along with premium food and beverage offerings. Capacity: 16-24 people. Price tag: $200-$1,250 per game per person. (link)
+ Rutgers will “soon be getting into a timeline” for its new indoor football practice facility, according to Scarlet Knights AD Pat Hobbs, who tells NJ.com the university hopes to release plans in the fall. Football HC Greg Schiano says there is a “good pool of money” set aside for the project but more fundraising is needed. “It lost some of its priority when NIL came around, but you can’t stop growing in one area just because you’re going in another. It slowed the growth because you only have so many people you can go to. But we’re going to get it built, sooner or later.” (link)
+ Vanderbilt held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for two certified sensory rooms inside Memorial Gymnasium that will be fully operational during the 2023-24 academic year. Commodores AD Candice Storey Lee: "This commitment to providing the best fan experience for everyone is real. There are many steps that we have to take to make sure that everybody feels included.” Former VU men’s basketball student-athlete Shan Foster helped provide funding for the new rooms. (link)

U.S. Senators Ben Cardin (D-MD) and John Thune (R-SD), both of whom sit on the Subcommittee on Taxation and IRS Oversight, sent a letter to the IRS and Department of the Treasury yesterday urging both bodies to strengthen their stance on NIL collectives. The letter, in part: “A fundamental requirement for tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) is that an organization must operate exclusively for a public benefit, such as a religious, charitable, scientific, or educational purpose. The GLAM [general legal advice memorandum] concludes that ‘many organizations that develop paid NIL opportunities for student athletes are not tax-exempt as described in section 501(c)(3) because the private benefits they provide to student athletes are not incidental both qualitatively and quantitatively to any exempt purpose furthered by that activity.’ We agree with this conclusion that many NIL collectives should not be granted tax exempt status. … We respectfully request that your agencies take the next step by adapting the GLAM’s conclusions into more formal guidance, such as a revenue ruling.” (link)

The Washington Post’s Kevin Blackistone argues it’s time for college athletes to unionize, writing: “What is being uncovered at Northwestern, my alma mater, is exactly why college athletes should unionize. That Bronny James last week became the second USC basketball player in as many years to suffer cardiac arrest during a summer practice is precisely why college athletes must unionize.” Blackistone goes on to contend that “the institutions of supposed higher learning that have let the tail of sports wag their societal mission need to let their athletes organize to protect the institutions themselves from the lawsuits and reputational harm done by college sports gone awry. … Had Northwestern’s fired football coach, Pat Fitzgerald, and the administration that employed him supported an effort by its football players to unionize nearly a decade ago, he probably would not have been unceremoniously unwaged. And maybe all of his former players would have fonder memories of playing for him, rather than telling potentially felonious tales.” Full column. (link)

Realignment Rumblings…
+ JohnCanzano.com’s namesake: “The Pac-12 is expected to present its media-rights deal to the remaining nine schools in the next couple of days. The timelines I’ve heard range from 24 hours to 72 hours. I’m setting the over/under at 48 hours — noon on Wednesday. I expect the uncertainty will create a swirl of rumors and fear mongering in the next couple of days. Be careful out there.” (link)
+ The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach dives into the travel details and accompanying concerns as UCLA and USC are preparing to join the Big Ten next year. UCLA’s process began with soliciting feedback from student-athletes about their needs for this change, which led to more mental health resources, providing breakfast and lunch being served to every athlete on campus, team meals instead of per diem on the road, academic advisors to travel with teams and more. Both have contacted professional teams to consult about adjustments to practice, travel and sleep schedules for athletic performance and sleep optimization. On travel itself, Bruins AD Martin Jarmond: “This is not more travel. In most instances, it will be the same number of trips that we take right now. And then a few (teams) will have a fewer number of trips. That’s one thing that I think people miss. Now the distances are farther, and that’s what our focus is going to be — how best to minimize the impact of the distance.” While some flights will be chartered, the accessibility of major B1G cities allows for commercial options and for teams in different sports to travel together. Lots more. (link)
+ JohnWallStreet chats with Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes about the impact of Colorado’s exit on the Pac-12’s looming media rights deal, with Crakes opining: “This could work out to be, at the very least, break-even, and perhaps it results in increased economics depending on expansion and things like that. […] Maybe the total deal value goes down a bit from what they were talking about with ten or maybe the terms are shorter contingent upon adding a school the partner signs off on. Or maybe it stays flat.” JWS believes the expansion may be in the league’s best interest if most of the content heads to streaming, whereas the opposite may be true if the deal is linear-heavy. (link)
+ Sportico’s Michael McCann pens on the potential “legal hook” of conference realignment that pushes towards continued consolidation. McCann points to Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch’s Alston opinion in which he emphasized a conference’s ability to impose restraints or rules within themselves, similar to how attorneys representing the Ivy League are arguing for their ability to prohibit athletic scholarships. McCann writing: “But if conference realignment brings about super conferences that resemble the NCAA in terms of controlling college sports or at least a sizable portion of it, Gorsuch’s distinction between the NCAA and a conference could collapse—and with it the judicial deference conferences currently enjoy. The potential consequences are far-reaching. Power Five conferences could eventually adopt rules recognizing college athletes as employees, while smaller conferences might stick to the student-athlete model. Some conferences might also explore revenue sharing with athletes or different rules for NIL. The degree to which a conference is confident its actions would withstand judicial scrutiny would shape that conference’s willingness to innovate.” (link)

As the 2023-24 season nears, Texas A&M AD Ross Bjork tells TexAgs that “we need to be consistent. [...] We finished 24th this year (in the LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup). We’ve finished higher at Texas A&M, and we need to get back into the top ten. If you’re in the top ten, you’re winning national championships.” Bjork also says he’s confident the new premium seating at Kyle Field will be ready in time for the start of the football season: “Our suites, the 23 new suites on the south end of Kyle Field, those will be complete – let’s just say kickoff is 6 p.m. on September 2 – those will be complete at 6 p.m.” Bjork says of upcoming facilities projects: “That (indoor track) building is going to be just a ‘wow’ factor for our track programs. And then we’re working on soccer and baseball. Those will be our next two projects up. … On Monday, the City of Bryan’s city council is approving an indoor tennis complex that will be home of Texas A&M tennis.” Finally, on NIL, Bjork notes: “NIL is part of the stratosphere and part of our ecosystem now. Eventually, whether Congress or the NCAA or somebody, we have to define that economic model because, until then, we’re going to be chasing and going in this cycle for a little while.” (link)

The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand points to Apple as a potential desired “strategic partner” for ESPN. Here’s the core of his thesis: “...the idea of being pre-loaded onto iPhones or other devices to lead in the next frontier of distribution is appealing to ESPN. Apple is known to be very finicky in its negotiations, but if anyone could close a deal with Apple, it may be (Disney CEO Bob) Iger, who was on their board. Apple’s plan in sports is to have global distribution through subscriptions.” More from Marchand: “...distribution with a small equity stake in ESPN is likely where this will end up. With Disney probably valuing ESPN in the $40 billion-$50 billion range, it would mean a company would need a $4 billion or $5 billion buy-in for a 10 percent stake in ESPN. The tech companies are the ones with the keys to distribution and the vaults to pay the entry fee.” (link)

CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio reiterates football scheduling strategy for the league in conjunction with streaming partner FloSports: “One of the things that’s very important to our membership is, aside from some early-season games, we want to remain a traditional conference as it relates to when our football games are played. We’re not looking to play games on Tuesday. We’re not looking to play games on Wednesday. We’re looking to provide a great campus atmosphere, great campus culture, and play our games on Saturday. And in doing so, the opportunities to provide national linear windows on Saturday for an FCS conference are very, very few and far between.” New for this season, all CAA kicks will include sideline replay monitors, as well as timeout countdown clocks. (link)

Purdue AD Mike Bobinski remains confident that Phase 1 renovations to Ross-Ade Stadium will be ready for kickoff, adding the Boilermakers could probably play a week from now if they needed to. The project’s cost has escalated from $30M to the $50M range and will continue to be fully funded by donors. (link)
|
Eastern Kentucky AD Matt Roan discusses whether a proposal to raise the entry for transitioning from FCS to FBS from $5K to $5M will be cost-prohibitive for EKU. “I don’t know if (the proposed $5 million entry fee) is necessarily directed at our conference. I can tell you that, as a collection of schools, we still maintain the ambition to compete at the highest level. … Certainly, for my president (EKU’s David T. McFaddin) and I, (the proposed fee) is something we are certainly aware of and we’ve had conversation about. It’s a planning and preparing (scenario).” (link)
|
The latest from Xavier AD Greg Chistopher on the potential addition of Football for the Musketeers: “I keep calling it a definite maybe. The program itself makes sense. The challenge we have is we don’t have a facility. We’re trying to balance the football idea with building a College of Medicine facility. We’ll try to make a decision by the end of the year.” Christopher also points to nearly $30M that’s been invested into the Cintas Center over the past decade: “We’re at a point we’ve probably gotten Cintas to about where it needs to be for today’s moment.” (link)

Rutgers has “entered a letter of intent” with Middlesex County to have a new state-of-the-art Multipurpose Community Venue be Rutgers Baseball’s new home stadium. Per NJ Advance Media, the construction, which is set to be ready for the 2026 season, will receive no funding from the Scarlet Knights. AD Pat Hobbs says the two parties will “continue to explore opportunities together” as the facility will be configured to host lacrosse and soccer contests. (link)

Thanks in part to a major gift from IU alumnus Jay Wilkinson, the Indiana football program will soon have a football-only weight room in Memorial Stadium’s North End Zone facility. Sportico’s Daniel Libit talks with Harlan Sports Management President Bryan Harlan, who serves as Minnesota Football HC P.J. Fleck and former Northwestern HC Pat Fitzgerald’s agent. Harlan says of Fitzgerald’s situation: “It has been very unexpected, and it changed my summer. That is part of the job and you’ve got to do that. But to say I was caught off guard is an understatement.” Meanwhile, Harlan dismisses Front Office Sports’ reporting on Minnesota’s team culture as a restatement of allegations being pushed by a former faculty member. “He finally got a media person to bite on it.” Harlan tells Libit he has 20 college head coaches and 35 assistants or coordinators as part of his nearly 80-person roster of clients, and “at the end of the day, when you have so many clients, somebody has a problem at all times. The challenges my clients have gone through the last few days is a very important part of the job. You don’t find out about people until things get rough.” Lots more from Libit. (link)

San Diego State football season ticket sales are down 23% year-over-year, but it’s not a surprise to Aztecs Assoc. AD for Ticket Operations Bobbie Walker: “We knew that the second year we weren’t going to be able to keep pace. Obviously, with a brand new stadium, everyone wants to check it out and be a part of that season and say, ‘Hey, I was at the first game.’” SDSU is currently at a touch over 10,300 sold & still believe the “12,000 range” is within reach before first kick. There’s also mini-plan options this year, plus single game opportunities with both UCLA & Boise State playing at Snapdragon Stadium that should move the needle. (link)
