Hillsdale AD Brubacher will retire at the end of the academic year concluding his 15-year tenure leading the Chargers. President Arnn: "It is difficult to be director of athletics at a school such as ours. Our academics are rigorous, and our athletes are held to the same high standards as the whole of the student body, though they practice dozens of hours each week and often travel on the weekends. Their distinction on and off the field is a testament to Don's ability and good character. His retirement is well deserved, and he will be sorely missed." Roberts Wesleyan will grow to 20 varsity sports in 2023-24 with the addition of Field Hockey, Women’s Triathlon, Men’s Volleyball and eSports. AD Segave: “With the addition of these new sports also comes the opportunity to make an impact on enrollment goals. Redhawks Athletics is grateful for the leadership and support of President Porterfield and the cabinet as we continue to position Roberts Wesleyan University in both the ECC and NCAA Division II level.” RWU intends to add additional athletic training and strength & conditioning staff to support the new programs. West Texas A&M has received approval from the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents for $8.9M toward the Bain Athletic Center expansion project, which is currently in Phase III of construction and will house sports performance, sports medicine, football and Olympic sport offices, academic success programs, team meeting rooms and the Hall of Champions, centralizing an athletics department that currently occupies space in eight different buildings across campus. AD McBroom: “The completion of the Bain Athletic Center is critical in order to maintain the level of success expected of the athletic program. This expansion will provide modern office space for administrators and coaches, add academic and meeting spaces for teams, and enable the program to develop a culture of collaboration and support that is critical to most successful organizations.” (link)

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s Hogue reports The Texas State University System will vote tomorrow on whether or not to allow Sul Ross State (DIII) to apply for DII and LSC membership. (link)

More on 1-seed Alaska Anchorage WVB not being able to host the West Region this weekend, as their home facility was already scheduled to welcome the Women’s Great Alaska Shootout. AD Swartwood, on discussions that began over a month ago about hosting both events concurrently: “We asked for a deviation on match times for the second round (Friday), to start the second round earlier in the day. No flexibility there, I mean the NCAA has their prescribed match times, and they let me know that they were set in terms of their prescribed match times, and uniformity in match times. ... We talked about moving the Shootout times back, later on in the day to be able to accommodate a different schedule. Ultimately, we have so many tickets out in the community for the Shootout — as well as all of the different resources we have invested into marketing the Shootout — moving the times earlier in the day was not feasible.” Swartwood acknowledges that hosting the regional does not bring in revenue for the department: “There is no doubt from our perspective that we’re really focused, from a revenue-generation perspective, in terms of making sure that we continue to bring in private revenue and to make our program as sustainable as we can going forward.” (link)

Updated graduation rate data from the NCAA shows the national four-year average ASR for DII student-athletes is 73%, while the single-year ASR for the Fall 2012 cohort is 75%, the highest ever for the division. The single-year ASRs for men and women are both at all-time highs of 67% and 87%, respectively. The Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) for the Fall 2012 cohort also reached a record-high 61%. (link)

NCAA correspondent Katz sits down with athLEDA Co-Founder Hathaway, Claflin AD O’Neal and Claflin MBB student-athlete Hatchett to discuss ARISE, an an e-learning program designed to help educate student-athletes at HBCUs interested in pursuing STEM careers. O’Neal: “I tell our staff this all the time. Our brand is academics. Athletics is just what we do. So any opportunity that we can feature our brand and show our student-athletes and show that academic side and put them in the right space. … When we were coming up, we didn’t have these opportunities to get in front of vice presidents of Chase Manhattan Bank…so when this program came about it gave us an opportunity to put our kids in a different space, and in that space they’ll get a chance to grow as young adults.” Hathaway notes that 84% of the mentors in the program are of color, 70% work in STEM, 61% are women and 60% are former student-athletes. 30% of the students participating come from a STEM major.
