Big Ten to 20?…
+ The Big Ten has begun preliminary talks to add Oregon, Washington, Stanford and Cal, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who notes the league is considering UO and UW if it adds two schools and all four if it wants to expand to 20. Dellenger adds: “The discussions are in the very early stages, sources caution. No decision, including on whether to expand or stay put at 16 teams, has been made or is considered imminent. The Big Ten may also patiently wait to see what happens with other Pac-12 schools and their potential move to the Big 12 before acting at all.” Also: “A group of four Big Ten university presidents began the preliminary process on Wednesday. … With the Pac-12 at risk of splintering, Oregon, Washington, Cal and Stanford renewed their push to the Big Ten, seeking a safe, and far richer harbor, for their athletic programs starting in 2024.” (link)
+ The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach adds to the reporting: “Source confirms that a subgroup of Big Ten presidents has begun exploratory discussions about expanding membership by two or four teams. … Schools under consideration: Oregon, Washington, Cal and Stanford. Source says ‘it’s a discussion but it’s a wait and see.’” (link)
+ The Big Ten indicates it is still focused on integration of USC and UCLA but it’s also the commissioner's job to keep the conference chancellors and presidents informed about new developments as they occur. (link)

Florida State’s Future?…
+ Florida State President Richard McCullough during today’s FSU Board of Trustees meeting was candid about the Seminoles’ position in the ACC: “We are one of the best media-valued teams in the United States. We, along with Clemson and others, help to carry the value of media rights in the ACC. No offense to my colleagues. That's just the numbers. … We currently face a very difficult situation. We are seeing large media deals that have been made with places like the Big Ten and the SEC which in many ways is…an existential crisis perhaps for Florida State University." He continues: “We of course are not satisfied with our current situation. We love the ACC. We love our partners at ESPN. Our goal would be to continue to stay in the ACC, but staying in the ACC under the current situation is hard for us to figure out how we remain competitive, unless there was a major change in the revenue distribution within the conference." Ultimately, McCullough’s remarks lead to this: “I believe that FSU will have to, at some point, consider very seriously leaving the ACC — unless there were a radical change to the revenue distribution." (link)
+ Trustee Justin Roth also weighs in: “I don't think it's unrealistic for us to say that as a goal for this board...if we don't have something figured out now in the next 12 months, we have an exit plan and execute on it." (link)

He’s done so many things to elevate athletics, which is a part of our strategic plan. I’d like to encourage the entire JSU community to show up and show out for our student athletes this season so we can continue to help them excel in and out of the classroom.” Robinson announced the return of men’s and women’s golf, which will elevate JSU to 18 sports. NCAA President Charlie Baker has released the key findings from a review conducted by Bain & Company of the NCAA’s business operations as well as a series of goals for the association and strategies for achieving them. Those goals are: Coordinate and deliver safe, fair and inclusive competition directly and via members; provide world-class services to student-athletes and members that leverage the NCAA's collective scale; grow the college sports ecosystem; and deliver sustainable funding for the NCAA mission. Additionally, Baker's plan calls for action around NIL opportunities; sports wagering; mental health resources; and other forms of student-athlete support. Baker: "I believe the results of this review provide a compelling and detailed vision that every NCAA action should anchor to. … It won't happen overnight, but we must make major progress on items that are immediately in front of us in order to set the table for next year.” (link)

Lewis Rice has released its assessment of the NCAA’s implementation of recommendations made by the Kaplan gender equity report and finds the NCAA “has addressed, or is in progress of addressing, nearly all of Kaplan’s recommendations. Those that remain in progress or under consideration are those that were most exposed to and stymied by the remaining and persistent obstacles we outline below.” Those obstacles include a historical lack of “ownership of gender equity” which was “proliferated and prolonged by significant turnover in the NCAA’s senior leadership over the last three years, including in the positions of NCAA President, Chief Financial Officer and the Senior Vice President over the Office of Inclusion.” That said, Lewis Rice finds that “during this assessment, we observed that the NCAA National Office staff has a markedly heightened awareness of, and focus on ensuring, gender equity. This appears to be a shift in awareness and focus since the 2021 Kaplan EGERs. … We also repeatedly heard and sensed that the NCAA is committed to creating lasting and dynamic systems to identify, prevent and address gender disparities. Indeed, one NCAA senior leader told us that it was long overdue to “imprint gender equity on the NCAA’s DNA.” Overall, the assessment finds the NCAA has “addressed” Phase 1 recommendations and is either “in progress,” has addressed, is considering or has slated for future consideration Phase 2 recommendations. The NCAA will offer member schools post-eligibility injury insurance coverage for student-athletes beginning Aug. 1, 2024. The coverage will be for two years after student-athletes complete their college athletics experience and will cover injuries that occur while playing for their school. President Charlie Baker: “Student-athletes deserve the coverage offered in this plan, no matter their division. Thanks to the many voices who have supported this idea since the Division I Transformation Committee formalized it in their final recommendations earlier this year. It's another occasion where the NCAA can show its unwavering commitment to and support for student-athletes." The policy's annual premium is projected to be $26 million. It will have a $90,000 excess limit per injury, with no deductible. There will also be limited coverage for mental health care related to the documented injury. (link)

The DI Board of Directors has directed the DI Council to develop proposals to improve the environment for student-athletes engaging in NIL. The board's direction comes at the request of the DI Council Working Group on NIL following two days of in-person stakeholder meetings in Indianapolis. The group will present several proposals to the council in October, including: developing a registration process for NIL service providers (such as agents and financial advisors) and NIL entities (those who contract with student-athletes for the use of their NIL); creating a standardized contract or standard contract terms that could include certain information to be required, including terms like fee structures and the specific activities for which athletes would be compensated; and establishing disclosure requirements for student-athletes and/or NIL entities that could serve as a resource for student-athletes and would be intended to provide transparency about NIL activities. Iowa backup kicker Aaron Blom has been charged with tampering with evidence, an aggravated misdemeanor, after being accused of betting on eight Hawkeyes sporting events, including the 2021 football game against Iowa State, in which he took the under. According to the Johnson County Attorney’s Office, Blom used a DraftKings account to make wagers while underage. He allegedly placed 170 bets totaling $4,400 before turning 21 years old, which is a condition to gamble in Iowa. Blom allegedly used an account registered to his mother to place the bets. The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman notes the “over/under [in the 2021 CyHawk game] was 45.5 points, and the Hawkeyes won 27-17. Blom did not play in that game, but he was the regular kicker in the 2022 game and missed the game-tying 48-yard field goal with no time remaining.” Former Iowa basketball player Ahron Ulis, who has since transferred to Nebraska, was also charged with tampering with evidence. The complaint alleges Ulis made about 1,850 bets, including 740 before turning 21. Additionally, walk-on Iowa baseball player Gehrig Christensen, who has since left the program, has been charged with tampering with records. EA Sports has filed a motion to dismiss The Brandr Group’s tortious interference lawsuit against the company. In its argument, EA states The Brandr Group’s contracts still grant athletes the right to their licenses. “Brandr’s tortious interference claim fails because, by the template’s terms, student-athletes retain the right to individually license their NIL. … Even if the student-athletes’ licenses to EA were (inaccurately) characterized as a group license, Brandr would still fail to state a tortious interference claim because its Complaint concedes that EA is separately licensing school IP from Collegiate Licensing Company, not bundling together those rights with student-athletes’ NILs.” (link); EA Sports CEO Andrew Wilson says the “team is making incredible progress around college football. … We're working through the license situation broadly. And as of now, we've got many, if not most, of the schools' licenses as part of our licensing platform. And we'll continue to work with the various governing bodies of the sport in the country and some key third-party partners that we have around how and when to include college athletes themselves into the game, and we'll work very closely with them. … I do believe that we'll find a place where we can work in lockstep with the athletes for inclusion in the game as well."
