Pac-12 Reactions…
+ While details have yet to crystalize, ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Heather Dinich note the “first year of what's expected to be a relatively short-term contract with Apple would start in 2024-25 and begin relatively low relative to the league's hopes. But the deal, sources said, would incrementally improve and potentially be competitive with its peers in the Big 12 and ACC down the road, provided certain subscription numbers are met. … Sources familiar with the negotiations told ESPN the Pac-12 is in a better position now than it was a month and a half ago to sell digital subscriptions thanks to changes in the media landscape.” (link)
+ The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner: “Was told a few weeks ago to watch for Warner (TBS/TNT) as one of the proposed partners, FWIW. Also FWIW: The lack of leaks could be indicative of the media partners.” (link)
+ Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger gets a number of anonymous quotes, including this one from a Pac-12 source: “If we had a good deal, we’d have presented it earlier.” Another, from an industry insider: “The market turned against George. If you can get 80% of what you ask, you usually take it. You don’t hope for 110%.” (link)
+ One TV source says to On3’s Eric Prisbell: “Nobody had any idea when they [Pac-12] peeled back the curtain who was going to be there. I don’t know what they are doing. ESPN has all it needs and has plenty of products in the windows that matter. Late night? Yeah, some Saturday windows here and there, but that is not a tier-one plan. And what are they going to pay for it? And are streamers willing to spend a fortune on college product with all the instability?” Also from a source: The Pac-12 has advised Apple and other potential media partners on likely replacement schools so the companies can assess based on the possibilities. (link)
+ USA Today’s Dan Wolken: “In the end, there was no magic bullet, no mystery deal, nothing commissioner George Kliavkoff had up his sleeve. The unsatisfactory truth of the Pac-12’s journey to a new media rights deal is that the negotiations were never going well, the contract was always going to be bad and the reason its conclusion kept getting pushed off into the future was because Kliavkoff held a terrible hand.” Beyond the financial aspect, Wolken points out: “Not only do prospects want to play on major television networks, it’s hard for them to even know much about these programs if they don’t have easy access to see them play. … Nobody wants to see the Pac-12 implode. It’s bad for the sport if there’s no West Coast-based league, or if it’s significantly weakened to the point where it looks like a slightly souped-up version of the Mountain West. But unless there’s something else to the deal that Kliavkoff reportedly presented Tuesday, it’s hard to imagine Colorado will be the only defection.” (link)

Warchant.com’s Ira Schoffel moderates an interactive chat with Florida State Board of Trustees Chair Peter Collins about the Seminoles' commitment to athletics, the changing college athletics landscape and lots more. Collins says Seminoles AD Michael Alford isn’t wrong when he says it is impossible to make up the revenue difference with the Big Ten and SEC schools. “We're going to be $30M, $35M, 40M behind the other conferences and so that's an insurmountable gap that you have to do something about.” He also notes different schools within the league have different motivations, observing that “if a school has a $60M athletic budget and they're getting $42M from the ACC, you know, maybe that's not that bad, but if you've got a $120M budget and you've got you're getting $42M from the ACC, it's a totally different story. … If you take our budget and take the TV contracts out of it and you put us in, say, in the Big Ten, I think we're fourth in the amount of money that we generate in the athletic department.” Full Q&A, including Collins saying the ACC Grant of Rights won’t be the document that holds the Noles back from exiting for another league. Missouri Valley Football Conference Commissioner Patty Viverito says of the FCS Championship returning to a Sunday in 2024: “When ESPN met with the commissioners in June it was clear that they have lots of enthusiasm for putting this event on a major channel. … Being up against the NFL is not ideal, but we're going to be up against the NFL wherever we put that game unless we go to a Friday evening, and ESPN just, quite frankly, wasn't wasn't willing to go there, nor was Frisco, our host, all that enthusiastic about a Friday night Championship. So, knowing that it's not ideal, every single option that we had had its pluses and minuses, and I think being on ABC is certainly one of the real feathers in the championship’s cap.” (link)

Iowa State QB Hunter Dekkers has been charged with tampering with records related to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation’s probe into sports gambling. According to the complaint, Dekkers is accused of placing 26 wagers on Cyclones sporting events, including the 2021 football game against Oklahoma State. Dekkers, a sophomore at the time, did not play in that game. The complaint also alleges a DraftKings account controlled by Dekkers completed approximately 366 online wagers totaling “over $2,799.” Dekkers is one of three current student-athletes who were charged, along with one former student-athlete, all of whom are accused of manipulating transactions to create the appearance that their bets were placed by other people. Meanwhile, a DraftKings account controlled by Cyclones wrestling student-athlete Paniro Johnson placed wagers totaling $45,640 on approximately 1,283 bets, according to the complaint. More. Speaking of tampering with records related to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation’s probe insport gambling, the Johnson County Attorney’s Office has filed a criminal complaint against former Iowa baseball student-athlete Gehrig Christensen for doing that, as well. Christensen is accused of operating a “scheme” with his mother, allowing him to hide his identity to “manipulate online/mobile transactions” as if his mother was placing the bets. In question is a DraftKings account placing a total of 559 underage wagers, including approximately 23 wagers on Hawkeyes sporting events, totaling more than $2,400. According to Hawk Central: “The affidavit states that Christensen ‘knowingly and intentionally falsified personal electronic sports wagering records’ from Nov. 7, 2022, through Feb. 7, 2023, while he was a member of the Iowa baseball team.” The 20-year-old Christensen retired from baseball in June. Former Northwestern football student-athlete Ramon Diaz plans to file a lawsuit against the school, its board of trustees, former football HC Pat Fitzgerald and former AD Jim Phillips, alleging he was subjected to hazing, sexual and physical abuse, racial discrimination, and other dehumanizing acts, according to The Inside Zone’s Matt Fortuna. “According to the complaint, the football program enabled a culture of racial discrimination and allowed football players to shave the words ‘Cinco de Mayo’ into the back of Plaintiff Diaz’s head while the team watched.” (link)

UAlbany will change the name of its men’s and women’s hoops venue from SEFCU Arena to the Broadview Center as part of Broadview Federal Credit Union's rebranding effort of UAlbany's athletic facilities. The Broadview Center is currently undergoing $12M in renovations, and Great Danes AD Mark Benson says: “When our fans walk through the doors into Broadview Center, they won't believe their eyes. Our partnership with Broadview allows us to provide a first-class venue for our basketball programs, students and friends in addition to the many community-based events for all throughout the Capital Region.” (link)

Louisiana Tech’s fundraising efforts over the past year generated $6.18M, a nine percent increase from the previous fiscal. More: “A primary reason for the increase in commitments was due to the Aug. 1, 2022 launch of the Aillet Society, the first-ever major giving society with five-year commitments of $25,000 or more. Since the launch one year ago, 60 shareholders across seven states have joined the Aillet Society with the median gift being $50,000. [...] The Louisiana Tech Athletic Club (LTAC) continued to thrive as well with a record 1,550 total donors, which was a 45 percent increase from FY22.” (link)

Illinois State Assoc. AD for Revenue Generation Derek Stark and Director of Revenue Growth Jason Ondrof join Connect Director of Growth Kate Mertz and Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss momentum for Redbird Athletics and how ISU is tapping into the Connect platform to build out its external team. Stark and Ondrof reflect on their sides of the hiring process, including how Connect helped Stark identify fit and alignment with Ondrof and why Ondrof took a chance on an unexpected opportunity. Stark: “We had some really strong folks in that candidate pool, so I looked at everybody's profile and picked out a handful I thought maybe would be a good fit for what we're building here. From there, I messaged them and asked to have some conversations before we even got everything posted and when I had the conversation with Jason I kind of knew this is our guy. … [Connect] made the process a lot easier. We've had struggles with different openings here and failing searches and being able to actually see one through. It feels good and gives us confidence moving forward than when we post more positions, which we will be doing, that we can have success again.” Lots more on Connect. (link)

Minnesota’s Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport has released its annual Women in College Coaching Report Card (WCCRC) in collaboration with WeCOACH. The report documents the percentage of women in all coaching positions for women’s teams within seven select DI conferences, specifically the Big Ten, Big East, Big 12, Pac-12, AAC, ACC, and SEC. Some takeaways: The percentage of women HCs of DI women’s teams in those conferences is up again for the ninth year in a row. The percentage of women head coaches increased by the largest margin (2.3%) in the history of the Report Card, and 2022 marked the second greatest increase (1.2%). For the first time more institutions earned an A grade than a F grade. In fact, there were 3x more As than Fs. For the last ten years, the number of F grades far outnumbered the A grades. For the second time in 10 years and for two years in a row, a majority of positional vacancies (58.1%) were filled by women. Also a first: a majority (65%, 15 of 23) of BIPOC coaches hired were women of color, and the percentage of women coaches of color increased from 5.7% in 2022 to 6.2%. Check out the full report. Pac-12 Media Rights Discussions…
+ Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports campus leaders left today’s Pac-12 meeting “with no agreement but with the expectation of eventually concluding a deal” with another meeting planned soon. Dellenger also notes today’s Arizona Board of Regents meeting is not expected to include a decision on membership but will feature conversation about the media rights deal. Further: “The buzz for a while has been that the Pac-12 primary rights-holder would be a streamer, such as Apple, with linear sublicenses to the likes of ESPN and Fox. Will this be enough, both monetarily & visibility, for Pac-12 presidents who have offers from other leagues?” (link, link)
+ ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports the primary deal presented to Pac-12 leaders today was primarily an Apple streaming deal, which includes incentivized tiers with a strong upside *if* certain subscriptions numbers are met. “No decisions on the deal or any schools pondering other options are expected immediately. Campus leaders are digesting the possibilities of a stream-centric future and the variance in potential income. The money piece is tricky because of the variables of subscriptions.” (link); Thamel also reports that if subscription targets are met, the revenue could surpass the Big 12’s. (link)
+ JohnCanzano.com’s namesake adds: “Pac-12 board meeting was ‘positive,’ per a source. The quote I got included the phrase ‘excited and aligned.’ Why hold another meeting? Some members of the Pac-12 CEO Group need to get final approval. More soon.” (link)
+ The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner also weighs in: “1. No ESPN would be problematic for both game visibility and brand promotion. 2. Part of the calculation for presidents is how this deal sets the conf up for the *next* contract cycle. Does aligning with Apple now help for the 2030s?” (link)
+ And from The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel: “If you were hoping for a neat and tidy resolution to Pac-12 media rights today -- no dice. The board was presented specific deal options (including $$ figures), but there was no vote yet to approve something, according to a source with knowledge of the discussions.” (link)

The NCAA Board of Directors tomorrow will review concepts discussed by the NIL working group and recommend what it would like to see addressed in a new NIL policy, On3’s Eric Prisbell reports, adding: “Among the primary concepts in play: a database of NIL deals, uniform contracts and a registry for those – namely agents and collectives – participating in the NIL space. A source with direct knowledge of the meetings told On3 that stakeholders had varying degrees of interest in those specific concepts, with some questioning how practical it would be to implement them.” Prisbell also points out that even if the board adopts a narrow NIL policy, it would likely be considered by the DI Council in October. Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill says it’s time for something to change. “State laws have gotten so crazy that we’ve got to get to a point where we can at least level-set the field. And then we have to give it some time and evaluate how this is going to work. What we have figured out over the last year or two is that what we are doing now ain’t working. It’s gotten to a point where it’s totally pay-for-play. I’d rather just try something and not have it work than do nothing and continue down this path. It’s just gotten really ugly in the space.” (link)

Northwestern has retained former U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, currently with the law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, to lead an independent review of the the university’s processes and accountability mechanisms set up to detect, report and respond to potential misconduct in its athletics programs, including hazing, bullying and discrimination. Lynch will examine the culture of the Wildcats’ athletic department, and the results of her review will be made public. Wildcats AD Derrick Gragg: “The Athletics Department welcomes this review as a critical tool in identifying the additional steps Northwestern can take to eradicate hazing. By making the results of her review public, we hope our entire community will be better informed and guided as we all work to address this critical issue in college athletics.” (link)

The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman profiles Iowa Interim AD Beth Goetz, who says her time as the interim AD at Minnesota in 2015 led her to realize that “I think I have the tools and the experience that I could be positioned for this. I really started to think like this is a path that I would want to take, and I think I can contribute in different ways.” In her role with the Hawkeyes, Goetz tells Dochterman that “over the next couple months, we’ll continue to talk about some of those. But if you just take a snapshot of the last couple years, Iowa’s had just a lot of success competitively across lots of sports. Whatever changes we experience in college athletics, how can we be at the forefront of trying to be prepared to shift and be the best version of Iowa we can be? We’re not trying to do what somebody else in our league is looking at, but how do we prepare to pivot? How do we leverage what’s great about our state, our fan base? So in terms of being creative and proactive there, I think that’s going to continue to be a priority. The best time to reinvent and build yourself are when things are going well, not when you start to experience challenges. I would say based on where we’ve been, that’s where Iowa is right now.” (link)

Tulsa raised $2.6M in donations during FY23, nearly tripling its total of $900K in FY20, and Golden Hurricane AD Dickson says his message to the staff upon returning to TU was: “We cannot operate at this level.” Or, as he put it last week: “If we don’t have water in the pond, we don’t survive. We only had an inch of water in our pond. Only tadpoles can live with that.” The department has set a goal of $3M for FY24, and Dixon tells Tulsa World’s Bill Haisten: “During the final quarter of (a fiscal year), fundraising is all I do. Both for me and our fundraising team — that’s all we do. All over town, there are coffees, lunches and dinners. Our fundraising team averages 450 calls a week. That’s what it takes. What’s most important to me — it’s not the dollars. It’s the donors. The (potential) that those people are donating annually. The likelihood that some of them become season-ticket holders. The possibility that some of those people become major-gift prospects.” Asked about the possibility of staying in Tulsa after his contract expires in June 2024, Dickson says: “We’ll see.” (link)

With campus CEO terms becoming increasingly shorter, Arkansas Chancellor Emeritus G. David Gearhart tells Inside Higher Ed’s Josh Moody: “I personally believe that being a college or university president may, in fact, be the toughest job in America, or for that matter across the world, but certainly in this country. It’s become a very difficult position to do the right way. There are so many groups out there that a college president has to try to appease, and it’s almost impossible to do that with all of the political machinations that are happening these days, not to mention the huge decline that we’re going to be seeing over the next several years in enrollment, which has already started.” According to the American Council on Education, presidents from a broad range of institutions in this year’s study indicated they had been on the job for 5.9 years. Prior surveys found an average of 6.5 years in 2016, seven years in 2011 and 8.5 years in 2006. Former Colorado State President Bob Dickeson worries about how shorter and shorter presidential tenures will impact stability at universities and believes governing boards should examine their search processes if a presidency fails. “Because the fact that the person has left is as much our fault as theirs, if there is fault to be assigned.” (link)
