Realignment Rumblings…
+ ESPN’s Pete Thamel writes Arizona’s move to the Big 12 is “expected to be finalized in the near future” after the university’s Board of Regents met last night. Further: “Big 12 presidents and CEOs met Thursday to vote on approving the move, sources confirmed to ESPN, another sign of the likelihood of it happening.” (link)
+ From the Associated Press: “The person with direct knowledge of the Arizona situation also said that Arizona State was mulling jumping to the Big 12, too, but was not as far along in the process. That could slow down Arizona’s final decision because the Tucson-based school would prefer to be in sync with its rivals from Tempe.” (link)
+ Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger: “Decisions from Big 12 expansion targets Arizona State and Utah have not progressed as quickly as Arizona, but they remain viable options for the league and a conclusion is expected in a matter of days. [...] Meanwhile, Pac-12 leaders have held ‘positive’ meetings the last two days to examine details of the Apple deal. Presidents of schools whose membership is in question participated. A GoR was expected to be presented to presidents at a meeting Friday.” (link, link)
+ The Oregonian’s James Crepea reports Oregon will accept an offer to join the Big Ten if an invite is extended. Additional reports indicate the Ducks, as well as Washington, could start with annual payouts in the low-to-mid $30M range with the pair also receiving “an advance on future payments that could increase the total payout to more than $40 million for the first several years they are in the conference, though it would be subtracted from future payouts.” (link)
+ JohnCanzano.com’s namesake touches on an unreported topic regarding the future of the Pac-12, noting he spoke to a Mountain West president about a possible merger in the event of several Pac-12 schools leaving, “and the answer I got was, ‘Hey they owe Comcast $50M, and they don't have a media rights deal that’s signed. And if you lose the wrong properties – Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Arizona State – suddenly you don't have a media rights deal. It becomes a headspace issue, like, is the Pac-12 really going to accurately see itself at that point? So, I think Oregon State, like Washington State, is probably highly, highly engaged today.” (link)
+ Timely insights from Tim Cook? Apple posted sales of $81.8B for the quarter ended in July, down 1.4% YoY. Net income was up 2.3% annually to $19.9B. The company’s iPhone sales fell 2.4% to $39.7B, missing analysts expectations of $40.2B. Meanwhile, revenue in the company’s services unit reached a new all-time high of $21B, driven by more than 1B paid subscriptions to offerings such as streaming music, TV products or spending in the App Store. CEO Tim Cook: “We are focused on original content [with Apple TV+] and so we are all about giving great storytellers the venue to tell great stories and hopefully get us all to think a little deeper. And sport is a part of that because sport is the ultimate original story.” (link, link)

Perspectives: Tread Lightly…
+ Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde contends that it’s “all deeply insulting and hypocritical for a bunch of millionaire leaders who bloviate about ‘student-athlete welfare,’ then assign them geographically ridiculous tasks. The leaders of college athletes don’t care about the athletes, or the fans. They’ll push them both to the breaking point in search of a higher profit margin.” Forde believes it would be “massively damaging” to have no prominent West Coast conference and that the “potential bloating of membership in a handful of super conferences—maybe two, maybe three—would create a soulless profit machine that further erodes what makes college athletics different from the NFL and NBA.” (link)
+ USA Today’s Dan Wolken: “When whatever’s going to happen finally happens, the long descent of college athletics into one of America’s most contemptible institutions will be complete. [...] We have 40 years of data telling us exactly where this enterprise is heading, and nobody is going to like it except the handful of schools at the very top. That’s the existential crisis at hand: Not NIL, not making players employees, not the transfer portal or anything like that but rather the very idea that your university is disposable if it's not one of the top 30 revenue-generators.” Lots more. LSU Football HC Brian Kelly talks more about the Tigers’ new injury reporting policy, acknowledging that gamblers seeking inside information from staffers is a concern. “I'm not saying that happened. I'm not saying that would happen. I think it's better to be proactive in those situations and take away even the temptation to even have that in this building and not be that next school that goes down that path." Kelly downplays the idea that LSU could be at a competitive disadvantage without a uniform reporting policy. “I can't tell you how many times we didn't know a particular quarterback was playing. You've got to adjust on the fly. … I don't want it to be a situation where it causes something to the point where somebody loses their job or somebody loses eligibility. I mean, that's a bigger issue than, well, we got a tactical advantage today because we found out he was playing." (link)

Former New Mexico State Men’s Basketball HC Greg Heiar says he was the school’s “sacrificial lamb” in the situation that led to his termination with cause in February. Heiar claims he was unaware of hazing allegations within his program and is seeking an undetermined sum for breach of contract and actions that were “willful, wanton and with reckless disregard.” From ESPN’s Myron Medcalf: “Heiar said he was with AD Mario Moccia at his house when he received a video that showed an October fight at an NMSU-New Mexico football game, which involved Peake and New Mexico student Brandon Travis. Heiar said the athletic director ‘smiled’ and said the video showed NMSU players ‘whooping up on some Lobos.’ Heiar alleges that he was blocked from suspending Peake or other players for their roles in the brawl. Heiar also alleges that Moccia and his superiors seized control of the program and would not allow him to discipline players who had been involved in the aftermath of a November shooting that resulted in Travis' death.” The two parties will have an arbitration hearing in 2024. In total, four former Northwestern players filed new lawsuits against the university yesterday, ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reports, noting two named former Wildcats AD/current Green Bay Packers CEO Mark Murphy as a defendant. Both of the players' lawsuits name HC Pat Fitzgerald, former President Henry Bienen and the school's board of trustees as defendants. Since Fitzgerald was let go, 13 former players have filed lawsuits against the school. (link)
|
Northwestern President Michael Schill in an op-ed for the Chicago Tribune again apologizes for those who were impacted by instances of hazing and writes: “We also have seen allegations that some of the hazing activities targeted student-athletes based on their race. These are disturbing claims and completely antithetical to our educational and athletics mission. I want to be clear that Northwestern is and will always be committed to diversity and that every one of our students belongs here.” Schill goes on to express concern “that fingers of blame and accusation are now being pointed indiscriminately and too broadly” and notes that the vast majority of coaches and student-athletes “are people of integrity and decency.” He adds: “It is critical that we understand why hazing took place and what must change in terms of our culture, processes and personnel in order to fully eradicate it. Why was hazing not reported to the university over the many years it occurred? Why might some staff have failed to notice or stop hazing activity? … It’s my hope that the changes we will make as a result of this difficult and painful experience for our university community might be helpful to others committed to addressing the issue of hazing in collegiate athletics.” (link)

Wisconsin will expand beer sales to the general public at the Kohl Center and LaBahn Arena for hoops and hockey games starting this season. As of now, there is no plan to expand beer sales at Camp Randall Stadium. Badgers AD Chris McIntosh: “The market has been moving this direction for quite some time. … I think our priority is to operationalize this in the best way we can and apply the learnings from that to any kind of potential or future expansion of it. So I think what our focus is right now is just on doing the best job we can in the Kohl Center and LaBahn.” (link)

Colorado last week hosted five TikTok employees for an educational workshop for student-athletes on content creation and maximizing their personal brands. CU Asst. Director of NIL Sadie Baker tells On3’s Andy Wittry: “Connecting [student-athletes] with TikTok and having face-to-face conversations is going to build more than just NIL. It’s networking. It allows our student-athletes to grow and get out of their box and get uncomfortable and introduce themselves.” Baker also notes: “Many people want to be in these student-athletes’ shoes and so using TikTok, doing days in the life, showing behind-the-scenes of Colorado football. So many people want to see that content. They’re just really teaching them how to use the platform, how to create TikToks, best times to post TikToks, how to do hashtags, all those different tips and tricks to best use TikTok.” The company plans to hold similar workshops at more schools in the future. Realignment Rumblings, Big Ten…
+ ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports the “Big Ten’s presidents met early Thursday morning and authorized Commissioner Tony Petitti to explore expansion and bring them back more information on Oregon and Washington as potential Big Ten members. No offers have been made, and a deal is uncertain. There’s a political thicket with the potential additions because the moves don’t offer the current Big Ten schools any additional money. USC doesn’t have a vote, but they’ve been vocal in the past about not wanting other West Coast Big Ten teams. Oregon and Washington would also have to come to terms with not getting a full share, which isn’t a slam dunk for them. There's potential, but significant roadblocks remain.” (link)
+ The AP’s Ralph Russo adds: “Important to know in the Big Ten, leg work is done on Oregon/Washington. Under [former Big Ten Commissioner Kevin] Warren, the league gathered volumes of data/analysis on several schools, none more thorough than UO and UW. If B1G decides to move, it is positioned to do so quickly.” (link)
+ Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel notes: “Big Ten broadcast partners see value in adding the Ducks and Huskies, but have balked at moving to 20 teams and bringing in Cal and Stanford. The two Bay Area schools offered appeal to university presidents who like the association with elite institutions and entry into the populous, wealthy and tech company-rich region of the country. That appears to be a backburner decision as of now. In the meantime, all eyes — and the fate of this round of realignment — remain on Arizona.” (link)

Realignment Rumblings, Pac-12…
+ Action Network’s Brett McMurphy reports Apple's “primary media rights deal with the Pac-12 expires at end of week. … Proposal is in ‘low $20M’ figure per school/annually, but can fluctuate/increase based on membership size & subscription incentives, sources said.” (link)
+ The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner expects the “future of the Pac-12 to be determined in the next 24-36 hours.” He notes that while Big Ten presidents have been for the past year unwilling to “drive a stake into the Pac-12,” the latter conference’s “existential crisis” now provides the necessary cover. That said, Wilner contends the Big Ten schools won’t vote for further expansion if it means giving up media rights money, and given Fox’s majority stake in the Big Ten Network, which controls the league’s GOR, “any decisions on media partners and expansion run through Fox.” In breaking down the math, Wilner figures a “media company would need to shell out $521M to make the math work for the Huskies and Ducks to enter the Big Ten at reduced revenue shares for the entirety of the seven-year contract cycle.” Add Stanford and Cal (at even further reduced rates) and that figure approaches $1B. Complicating matters further, Wilner wonders whether the Big Ten and Fox would still want to add the Pac-12 schools if they believe it’s possible North Carolina and Florida State (and their TV markets) may soon become available. Full breakdown. (link, link)
+ Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel reports that “there is still some belief that the nine remaining Pac 12 could decide to stay together and agree to new media deal. We'll see. If so, it could then add SDSU, maybe others and everything stops.” Wetzel also notes the Big Ten is hesitant about offering expansion bids to Oregon and Washington (and perhaps Cal and Stanford) unless the Pac-12 further deteriorates. If the Pac-12 sticks together, the B1G is “likely to just stay at 16 and wait. If the Big Ten does decide to offer membership, it will be at a cut rate for some multiyear period (maybe 50-60% of media rights revenue that will range between $50-65M annually). Still equal or better than most options for Oregon, et al.” (link)

North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham reacts to Florida State President Richard McCullough’s comments yesterday about the Seminoles potentially leaving the ACC: “I think it's good for college athletics to have four, five, or even six conferences nationally. I think the consolidation is not good long-term. I think that the number of opportunities that we can offer, we need to stay strong and have as many opportunities for kids to play and get an education. Those things haven't changed for me. Now, what they want to do and how they want to go about doing their business, that is their business, but it does have an impact on us and, quite frankly, I don’t think it’s good for our league to be out there barking like that. I'd rather see them be a good member of the league and support the league, and if they have to make a decision, then so be it. Pay for the exit fee, wait for your grant of rights…and then when in 2036 those rights return to you, do whatever you want.” (link)

Brown AD Grace Calhoun talks with SBJ’s David Nethery about the biggest issues facing college sports, including where the NCAA couldn’t get ahead of NIL and the transfer portal. Calhoun acknowledges that “as someone who's been in college athletics for 30 years, we were raised on believing that the amateur model meant that we had to be really restrictive with what student athletes could receive. I came up through the student support services area, and I can remember all these successive issues that we had to work through years ago. It was student-athletes not even being able to work because we were worried that they'd be overcompensated for what they were doing. … [There was] this strong sense that if you were providing money benefits, then we would lose the amateurism model.” As media rights contracts began to increase exponentially, Calhoun points the “money started going increasingly to the coaches and these big facilities, and you could see that tension really brewing between the student-athletes, who were putting out these games – our product, if you will – and on the other end the coaches having the the money the power. And [with] that imbalance, we were really losing the narrative with the general public.” Lots more, including her goals for the Bears. (link)

On3’s Matt Zenitz catches up with several college athletics administrators, including three ADs, to get their perspective on Apple’s proposed Pac-12 deal and the overall feeling of moving to a streaming-heavy, if not streaming-only, platform. While many express skepticism, one AD says: “If you look at what the MLS has done with Apple and its partnership with Apple, it seems like they’ve done really well for themselves, just thumbing through Sports Business Journal and reading some of the articles about what’s happened there. … It wouldn’t surprise me if Apple one day bought ESPN altogether. So, I certainly see the possibilities. But there’s just a lot of unknown. I’m not terribly down on it.” A Power 5 AD also indicates he or she is not as down on the deal as others but admits: “Would I rather have linear? Yeah, obviously.” Another AD is succinct in his or her analysis: “If I’m Arizona, I’m probably getting the hell out of there.” More. (link)

ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reports former Northwestern football player Tom Carnifax and another ex-player, classified as a John Doe, have filed lawsuits against the university. Carnifax, the fifth named player to file suit, alleges he was a victim of hazing and was "bullied, belittled and ostracized by coaches due to injuries." Rittenberg adds: “Two other lawsuits from ex-players from a separate Chicago firm also were filed today, both under ‘John Doe’ designations. Of note: Former athletic director Mark Murphy, now Green Bay Packers CEO, has been named as a defendant for the first time.” (link)
|
On3’s Matt Zenitz takes a look at how Pac-12 football coaches are addressing the realignment rumors with recruits, noting: “Unfortunately for most of these Pac-12 coaches and staffers, the information they’re getting is no greater than what’s being shared publicly. That level of unknown and the inability to give definitive answers has led to many Pac-12 team staffers taking a similar stance as what Arizona head coach Jedd Fisch shared during a press conference on Tuesday: “Obviously I don’t know what’s happening with the conference. I don’t know what’s going to happen there. But I do know Arizona is a great brand and we’ll be just fine.” Another coach tells Zenits: “If I’m Colorado, if I’m Arizona (if they go to the Big-12), it brings excitement, more relevancy. It’s a huge selling pitch as far as where college football is headed into these super leagues. Now if you’re Wazzu, if you’re Oregon State, it might be quite disheartening to go through this process right now because, if I’m one of those guys, my competitive advantage was my P5 status and playing schools like Oregon, UCLA and USC. But now I may be forced into the Mountain West.” (link)

Warner Bros. Discovery plans to introduce a more robust offering of sports and news content to the Max streaming service, Variety’s Brian Steinberg reports, adding that WBD CEO David Zaslav during a call with analysts today noted the company has “a real strategic plan that we are finalizing” regarding sports. He also noted that “news and sports are important. They are differentiators. They are compelling. They make these platforms come alive.” While details have yet to be formalized, WBD CEO/President of Global Streaming and Games JB Perrette suggested sports or news could be used to drive an incremental fee for those subscribers who wanted to see such programming.
