The DII Presidents Council sponsors three proposals for the NCAA Convention. One proposal would reduce the number of sponsoring schools needed to have a DII championship, from 50 to 35 for men’s sports and 40 to 35 for women’s sports, and establish a three-year grace period if a sport falls below the threshold. Another proposal would grant automatic qualification privileges in all team sports other than football, instead of leaving the decision up to each sport committee. A third proposal would amend the earned access legislation to require representation in the bracket from all football-sponsoring conferences by including the highest-ranked team in a conference not already represented in the bracket. The GLVC enters a three-year partnership with Hudl to put select regular-season and championship broadcasts behind a paywall. Pricing as follows: single broadcast for $10, sport pass for $50 (Women’s Volleyball) or $75 (Football, Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball), full package for all four sports at $100. Championship broadcasts for additional sports include Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Men’s Swimming, Women’s Swimming, Men’s Lacrosse, Women’s Lacrosse, Softball and Baseball. GLVC Commissioner Naumovich: “This initiative is the next step in our progression with the new era of pay-per-view. Endorsed by the league as a whole, including the GLVC the Council of Presidents, moving select sports behind a paywall will provide a new revenue stream for all 14 member schools and the Conference office.” (link)

More buzz about a potential Week 0 proposal backed by the MIAA, CIAA, SIAC, GSC and LSC. MIAA Commissioner Racy: “It is important for Division II football. It provides great scheduling flexibility for conferences. [...] The potential bye week will be important for the health and safety of our student-athletes.” That quintet of leagues is part of a seven-conference “alliance” that has met multiple times in 2023 and that Racy describes as a “grassroots leadership group focused on improving Division II football.” Racy also notes that the MIAA could return to 12 football-playing members by the 2025 season. Politico’s Mia McCarthy notes NCAA President Charlie Baker is being well-received by both sides of the political aisle in Washington, D.C., and U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) remarks: “If Charlie Baker would have been here two, three years ago, we wouldn’t have this problem now.” Congresswoman Lori Trahan (D-MA) adds: “The NCAA has had their head in the sand for decades. But I’ve seen Charlie work with Democrats and a lot of different stakeholders to get things done. And so I’m optimistic that he’s going to transform the NCAA.” (link)

+ With campus CEO terms becoming increasingly shorter, Arkansas (DI) Chancellor Emeritus G. David Gearhart tells Inside Higher Ed’s Josh Moody: “I personally believe that being a college or university president may, in fact, be the toughest job in America, or for that matter across the world, but certainly in this country. It’s become a very difficult position to do the right way. There are so many groups out there that a college president has to try to appease, and it’s almost impossible to do that with all of the political machinations that are happening these days, not to mention the huge decline that we’re going to be seeing over the next several years in enrollment, which has already started.” According to the American Council on Education, presidents from a broad range of institutions in this year’s study indicated they had been on the job for 5.9 years. Prior surveys found an average of 6.5 years in 2016, seven years in 2011 and 8.5 years in 2006. Former Colorado State (DI) President Bob Dickeson worries about how shorter and shorter presidential tenures will impact stability at universities and believes governing boards should examine their search processes if a presidency fails. “Because the fact that the person has left is as much our fault as theirs, if there is fault to be assigned.” (link)
