FDU-Florham elevates Co-Interim AD/Women's Soccer HC/SWA Kristin Giotta to AD. Giotta had been leading the department for the last year alongside Co-Interim AD/Men’s Lacrosse HC Pat Scarpello. President Michael Avaltroni: "Kristin has been a long-time influential contributor to our division III athletics program, both as a highly successful coach and more recently as a talented administrator serving as interim athletics director. Colby-Sawyer appoints Assoc. AD/Baseball HC Tom White as interim AD. President Susan D. Stuebner: “Tom will provide strong and engaged leadership for the upcoming year for the department and our student-athletes. The DIII Presidents Council elects Juniata President Jim Troha as chair and Trinity (CT) President Joanne Berger-Sweeney as vice chair, and approves Maine-Presque Isle President Raymond Rice to fill an immediate appointment. The council also votes to sponsor legislation for a revised DIII philosophy statement at the 2024 NCAA Convention. (link) Also of note, the 50th anniversary of Division III is Sunday, August 6th. Politico’s Mia McCarthy notes NCAA President Charlie Baker is being well-received by both sides of the political aisle in Washington, D.C., and U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) remarks: “If Charlie Baker would have been here two, three years ago, we wouldn’t have this problem now.” Congresswoman Lori Trahan (D-MA) adds: “The NCAA has had their head in the sand for decades. But I’ve seen Charlie work with Democrats and a lot of different stakeholders to get things done. And so I’m optimistic that he’s going to transform the NCAA.” (link)

Union announces it is transitioning its nickname from Dutchmen to Garnet Chargers. Per the press release: “Garnet has been Union’s official color for more than 150 years. Chargers harkens to Schenectady’s legacy as a hub for electrical innovation and invention and is an apt metaphor for the high-energy, forward-looking Union College experience.” (link)

With campus CEO terms becoming increasingly shorter, Arkansas (DI) Chancellor Emeritus G. David Gearhart tells Inside Higher Ed’s Josh Moody: “I personally believe that being a college or university president may, in fact, be the toughest job in America, or for that matter across the world, but certainly in this country. It’s become a very difficult position to do the right way. There are so many groups out there that a college president has to try to appease, and it’s almost impossible to do that with all of the political machinations that are happening these days, not to mention the huge decline that we’re going to be seeing over the next several years in enrollment, which has already started.” According to the American Council on Education, presidents from a broad range of institutions in this year’s study indicated they had been on the job for 5.9 years. Prior surveys found an average of 6.5 years in 2016, seven years in 2011 and 8.5 years in 2006. Former Colorado State (DI) President Bob Dickeson worries about how shorter and shorter presidential tenures will impact stability at universities and believes governing boards should examine their search processes if a presidency fails. “Because the fact that the person has left is as much our fault as theirs, if there is fault to be assigned.” (link)
