Big Chair Developments…
+ Presbyterian moves quickly and promotes Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Operations/SWA Dee Nichols to become the Blue Hose's next AD. President Anita Gustafson: “Dee Nichols brings with her 24 years of leadership experience in intercollegiate athletics. At PC, she has worked closely with student-athletes and the coaching staff across all sports, and she is well-known and well-respected throughout the community. I am confident that Dee is the right person at the right time to be PC’s next athletic director.” (link)
+ Chattanooga AD Mark Wharton inks an extension through the 2027-28 academic year. Terms have yet to be disclosed. (link)
+ New Mexico State AD Mario Moccia’s salary is being paid through athletic foundation funds rather than university funds at the behest of state leaders following a May letter from Higher Education Department Cabinet Secretary Stephanie Rodriguez. The letter stated that “it is the position of the New Mexico Higher Education Department and Governor (Michelle) Lujan Grisham that, given the heinous nature of the incidents that occurred under Director Moccia’s tenure, state funds should not be applied toward his salary or compensation until and unless a thorough independent investigation has cleared him of any culpability or wrongdoing." An NMSU spokesperson this week told the Las Cruces Sun-News’ Jason Groves that Moccia's contract is still being paid with AAC funds until a New Mexico Attorney General investigation is completed. Moccia’s five-year extension took effect July 1. (link)

Realignment Rumblings…
+ Oregon and Washington are expected to join the Big Ten according to multiple sources. Yahoo's Dan Wetzel and Ross Dellenger report the duo will accept invitations that are expected to be offered today, adding: "Both schools are expected to agree to a cut rate — perhaps as low as 50 percent — of the Big Ten’s media revenue that could reach $65 million/year per institution. That is still more than the Pac-12’s proposed media deal with Apple TV+, which is estimated to be in the $20-25 million range." (link)
+ ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg: “Oregon and Washington would be all sports additions to Big Ten beginning in 2024, per sources. Football schedule will need to be redone after lot of work into the flex-protect plus model for 16 teams.” (link)
+ The UO Board of Trustees is set to hold an emergency meeting today at 5:30 ET to discuss “time sensitive athletic conference issues.” (link)
+ ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that while Arizona has applied to and been admitted to the Big 12, “conversations between the Big 12 and Utah and Arizona State ramped up Friday. (link)
+ Wildcat Authority’s Jason Scheer reports: “Things can change, but the plan is for there to be an official announcement from Arizona tomorrow.” (link)
+ Washington State President Kirk Schulz and AD Pat Chun have released a statement which expresses their disappointment “with the recent decisions by some of our Pac-12 peers. While we had hoped that our membership would remain together, this outcome was always a possibility, and we have been working diligently to determine what is next for [WSU]. We’ve prepared for numerous scenarios, including our current situation. With exceptional student-athletes, a strong Cougar tradition and incredible support from our fans, donors and alumni, we will chart the best path forward together.” (link)
+ Oregon State Representative Shelly Boshart Davis (D-Albany) is calling on House Speaker Dan Rayfield (D-Corvallis) to convene a panel tasked with studying the unintended consequences of Oregon’s move to the Big Ten. Boshart Davis: “As a graduate of Oregon State and a representative of a district that houses many OSU students, I am deeply concerned about the impacts on our state university system if the University of Oregon decides to leave the Pac-12. … If one of our major universities is going to make a unilateral decision that could impact Oregon’s budget, we should at least understand the full impacts. At the most, the people’s representatives should have a say.” (link)
+ The Pac-12’s difficulty to secure a media rights deal should “terrify any small to mid-sized league or sports conference,” according to SBJ’s John Ourand, who observes: “The message from traditional TV networks is clear: They are not going to break the bank for programming they see as nonessential. This is not a case of a popping bubble. Networks and streaming companies still prioritize sports rights. … Look also at The CW, which agreed to pay $115 million per year for NASCAR’s Xfinity Series. But as companies like Amazon and Disney/ESPN have laid off thousands of employees recently, they are being more mindful than ever about how much to pay for rights.” Regarding the Pac-12’s negotiations specifically, Ourand points out the “prospect of keeping the package away from the deep-pocketed Apple did not spur ESPN and Fox to join negotiations in a serious way. Every other television network and streaming service similarly viewed the Pac-12 as ‘nice-to-have’ programming, not ‘need-to-have’ programming. That’s the worst place a sports conference could be these days. (link)

Florida State is working with JPMorgan Chase to explore how its athletic department could raise capital from institutional funds, such as private equity, according to Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams, Scott Soshnick and Kurt Badenhausen, who report: “[Private Equity] giant Sixth Street is in advanced talks to lead a possible investment. … Institutional money has poured into professional sports in recent years, from the NBA and global soccer to F1 and golf, but this would break new ground by entering the multibillion-dollar world of college athletic departments. The school is considering a structure similar to many of those pro sports investments, where commercial rights are rolled into a new company, the private equity fund invests in that entity, and then recoups its money via future media/sponsorship revenue.” Also: “It’s unclear exactly which FSU entity is most involved in the process. Florida law allows its public universities to organize their athletic departments as separate nonprofits, and there is a complex web of entities that includes the school itself, its booster organization and these nonprofit athletic setups. Many public schools also have strict rules around transparent, competitive bidding for university contracts, and certain deal structures would need to be avoided so as not to jeopardize a university’s tax-exempt status.” (link)

North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham reassured the department the Tar Heels are staying in the ACC amidst all the chaos, telling The News & Observer’s Luke DeCock: “When the news cycle starts spinning like this, I have the obligation to let our staff know what I know and reassure them we’re going to be OK. That I value what they do. That the university values what they do. That’s my role, to reassure them that things are going to be fine. […] We have a $137 million budget. … We’re in good shape. […] The ACC’s a great league for us. We have no plans to leave the ACC. We’re going to strengthen the ACC and do everything we can to make our league as good as we possibly can. We’re going to value what we have. I’m not going to look over my shoulder at what we don’t have.” (link)

Politico’s Mia McCarthy notes NCAA President Charlie Baker is being well-received by both sides of the political aisle in Washington, D.C., and U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) remarks: “If Charlie Baker would have been here two, three years ago, we wouldn’t have this problem now.” Congresswoman Lori Trahan (D-MA) adds: “The NCAA has had their head in the sand for decades. But I’ve seen Charlie work with Democrats and a lot of different stakeholders to get things done. And so I’m optimistic that he’s going to transform the NCAA.” (link)

NABC Executive Director Craig Robinson joins NCAA correspondent Andy Katz to provide updates on the NABC’s advocacy and legislative strategy, including an ongoing review of the DI recruiting calendar, supporting a new legislative autonomy model for men’s basketball, evaluating the bracket composition of the DII tournament, and more. Robinson notes a 60-day transfer portal window is too long, and “we are advocating for a shorter period like 30 days, and I suspect we’ll end up somewhere in the middle. But 60 days is too long for coaches, too long for players, too long for prospective student-athletes.” Robinson also reiterates that a priority for redesigning the recruiting calendar is to give coaches some time to recharge, support their mental health and allow them to spend time with their families. “I suspect we’ll try to get some more dead periods in there to make that work…and hopefully by October we’ll have something to present to the council that might make some sense.” The rationale for seeking autonomy for men’s hoops, Robinson explains, is that “not all college sports are the same, and in Division I men's basketball we have unique challenges and opportunities. And its effect on student athletes is unmatched, and our effect on the overall ecosystem of the NCAA is unmatched.” Full interview. (link)

ECU has sold 14,200 football season tickets, roughly 1,500 shy of last year’s final tally, according to Pirates AD Jon Gilbert, who adds: “We increased our season tickets nearly 15 percent from 2021 to 2022 and are hopeful for similar numbers this year.” (link)

+ Georgia Tech Men’s Basketball HC Damon Stoudamire will earn $2.1M in the first year of his five-year contract. That total will increase by $100K each season. Stoudamire is eligible for a $50K bonus if the team’s APR is greater or equal to 950, $75K if greater or equal to 960, $100K if greater or equal to 970 and $100K if a single-year APR falls in the national top 10. Other bonuses include $100K for finishing in the top four of the regular season ACC standings and $100K for winning the regular season and/or conference tournament championship. Should Stoudamire voluntarily leave before April 30 he will owe the Yellow Jackets $5M. That total decreases by $1M each year. If Tech terminates Stoudamire’s contract without cause, it will owe the coach 100% of his contract in 2024 and 2025, 60% in 2026 and 50% in 2027 and 2028. (link)

The trial against former San José State athletic trainer Scott Shaw and accusations of groping female student-athletes ended in mistrial yesterday after over 21 hours of deliberations and a hung jury over the six misdemeanor counts. The case can be retried by the federal government, with Shaw’s attorney stating, “It appears very much that they will retry the case.” (link)
