The Day It All Changed…
+ As you know, Utah, Arizona & Arizona State are off to the Big 12 starting with the 2024-25 competition seasons. (link)
+ A statement from the Pac-12: “Today’s news is incredibly disappointing for student-athletes, fans, alumni and staff of the Pac-12 who cherish the over 100-year history, tradition and rivalries of the Conference of Champions. We remain focused on securing the best possible future for each of our member universities." (link)
+ Oregon State AD Scott Barnes: “The great history and tradition of this conference has been severely damaged. The best interest of the student athlete hasn’t been served. Traveling to the Eastern seaboard multiple times a year is not in the best interest of student-athletes. I’m furious because it puts this university in harm’s way and our student athletes in harm’s way. There’s some damage done that we’re going to have to mitigate. … We were literally hours away from a deal that everybody could embrace.” (link)
+ Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne and AD Bernard Muir in a statement: “We are aware of the University of Oregon and the University of Washington’s intended departure from the Pac-12 Conference. Our primary focus at this time is analyzing the available options and making the best decisions for Stanford and our student-athletes. We remain optimistic about Stanford’s athletics future and remain committed to pursuing excellence in college athletics.” (link)
+ Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger says a “practical” option for the remaining Pac-12 schools - Stanford, Cal, Washington State & Oregon State - is a merger with the Mountain West. Further: “Re-forming the Pac-12 with acquisitions is a long shot.” (link)
+ Oregon & Washington will receive media revenues of ~$30M per year from the Big Ten with a $1M per year increase. The Ducks & Huskies will receive full league shares once the next media deals start in 2030-31. (link)
+ Oregon and Washington both say in the Big Ten press release that they want to preserve the tradition of playing their in-state rivals, Oregon State and Washington State, respectively. (link)
+ Wildcat Authority’s Jason Scheer: “There is also a real chance that the two (Big 12) additions would be basketball only. Yormark is going for the kill. Gonzaga and UConn would be just basketball additions and there have been discussions in the last 48 hours. Lot to work through with that though.” (link)
+ More from Dellenger: “Two CFP commissioners tell YahooSports that the 6+6 expansion format should be re-examined (not surprising). Starting in 2024, 6 highest-ranked conference champs get at-large spots & next 6 highest-ranked teams get at-large spots. … The CFP does not have a binding TV agreement after the 2025 playoff, but there is a thought that commissioners should explore a format change - one suggested 5 AQs +7 ALs format - for 2024 and 2025 as well. Obviously, it's early and there has been no serious discussion.” (link)

More Reactions & Analysis…
+ On3’s Matt Zenitz gets this from a DI AD with Pac-12 ties: “I’m just not sure there’s enough left that people have confidence in (the Pac-12), especially given they couldn’t get to the (money) numbers they needed to with what was left and now you take the two remaining strongest brands out of that. And I struggle with who you point the finger at, right? We’ve had presidents in charge of college athletics who have hired business leaders to run conference offices, and those conference offices and the members within them are acting like businesses rather than people focused on student-athletes and education. I’m not above that by any means. But it’s just kind of what you get when business people do business. This is what happens. You pursue the highest dollar. I wish that wasn’t the case because I don’t think that’s what’s best for college athletics. But that seems to be where we’re at. You just throw all rivalries and all sometimes common sense out the window chasing the dollar, chasing football.” (link)
+ The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner has insights from a Pac-12 source: “It’s tragic that it came to this. It never had to get to this point, but there were so many mistakes along the way.” Further, from Wilner: “The Bay Area schools assuredly will attempt to squeeze into the Big Ten, creating a six-team western division. If that move fails, they could compete as Independents or join the Mountain West. Washington State and Oregon State seemingly have only the Mountain West as an option.” (link)
+ Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde: “Sources tell Sports Illustrated the Atlantic Coast Conference made a late attempt at delivering a life raft to the Pac-12, in the form of a potential scheduling arrangement or other partnership that could create additional revenue for both leagues. While not entirely selfless, the ACC was willing to do something other than backstab another conference fighting for survival. That qualifies as a Mother Teresa move in the current climate. That #Pac12AfterDark plot twist late Thursday helped breathe a little life into the league heading into a meeting Friday morning, but it was short-lived.” (link)

CollegeAD reports Utah State is “expected to hold final interviews with candidates this weekend in Salt Lake City” with a new AD selection by the middle of next week. CollegeAD also reports Miami (FL) has partnered with TurnkeyZRG for the search to replace former Senior Deputy AD/SWA & new Elon AD Jennifer Strawley. (link)

+ Looks like Virginia Asst. AD for Compliance Kristen Arquilla is now at Arizona as its new Senior Assoc. AD for Compliance (link)
+ CollegeAD has South Alabama adding Western Kentucky Assoc. Director of Athletics Communications Tyler Roper as Assoc. AD for Strategic Communications. (link)
+ Tons of administrative moves in the industry can be seen via The Wire on Collegiate Sports Connect, which includes changes in recent days at Alabama, Baylor, Canisius, Chicago State, FAU, Fordham, Georgia Tech, Grand Canyon, Houston, Jacksonville, Lamar, McNeese, Mississippi State, Navy, NC State, Northern Illinois, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Rhode Island, TCU, Texas, UIC, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech. (link)
+ Columbia Football HC Al Bagnoli announces he is stepping down due to health reasons. OC Mark Fabish will serve as interim for the upcoming season and Bagnoli will “transition into a new role within the athletics department, where he will be mentoring Columbia's head coaches and spearheading fundraising initiatives.” (link)

Per the Action Network’s Brett McMurphy: “Texas Tech has sold (its) entire allotment of season tickets (31,649) for this season.” (link)

More on ESPN’s search for a potential strategic partner from the Wall Street Journal’s Jessica Toonkel and Isabella Simonetti, who report part of the company’s early talks with MLB involved streaming local baseball games in certain markets, filling a void left by the Diamond Sports Group bankruptcy. “ESPN could offer those baseball games as an add-on to its $9.99-a-month ESPN+ service, but it isn’t interested in paying a big fee for the media rights, as TV broadcasters have done. ESPN sees the potential for similar arrangements with other pro sports leagues.” Desser Sports Media President Ed Desser notes ESPN needs to be mindful of attracting younger audiences as it searches for a strategic partner. “That’s the missing link that is important for Disney and ESPN to capture because they have either left the ecosystem or were never part of it.” Also from Toonkel and Simonetti: “Media executives say big tech players from Amazon to Google to Apple also would have a lot to offer in helping ESPN reach a big audience and sign up subscribers. ESPN could tie up with more than one strategic partner, people close to the discussions said.” (link)

Collegiate Sports Associates Founder/Chairman Todd Turner sits down with Duke AD Emeritus Kevin White on the inaugural episode of The Journey to reflect on White's career, his upbringing, the qualities he believes are most important for serving as an AD, how he would shape college sports, the role of the NCAA moving forward and lots more. White tells Turner the U.S. college athletics model is the “envy of the world,” adding: “You know, we’re the only place in the world where higher education and sport are connected. Western Europe would love to have our model. Asia would love to have our model. They've all studied our model, and they've not been able to put it together, so we have something that's really special, and it’s had a high, high impact on Team USA and the Olympic movement.” As such, White warns that “we have a lot to lose here.” Whereas the concept of college athletics once involved balancing higher ed with entertainment, White now views the dichotomy as one between higher ed and the commercialism of sport. “Everybody’s fighting for market share. This is not any different than the banking community, the airline community, telecommunications, whatever it is. … A lot of the forces that have existed in corporate America have now found their way into college athletics and not surprisingly so.” White believes the NCAA will “get out of the enforcement business or have to at some point,” similar to the way the IRS functions as part of the federal government. Lots more. (link)

Fairfield AD Paul Schlickmann joins Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker from the 2023 NACDA Convention. In addition to NIL and Transformation Committee recommendations, Schlickmann outlines his perspective on utilizing some of the resources already offered on campus as well as his reaction to being named NACDA AD of the Year. In discussing the Stags’ approach to NIL, Schlickmann explains: “Fairfield is very much an educational enterprise that fosters entrepreneurial spirit, not just within our business school, but within our core curriculum. So, we're trying to marry whatever we put together with that kind of spirit and provide athletes with that opportunity. And then at the same time there's a pragmatic aspect to this where you have to kind of compete in the sandbox as it relates to a couple of sports, so we have created an overall infrastructure. We've partnered with INFLCR, we've done the neighborhood exchange and we're working on some other things to try and enhance that and do some group licensing and provide athletes with the basic opportunities for which it was intended.” Full Q&A. More major men’s basketball programs are looking overseas in recruiting, Sports Illustrated’s Kevin Sweeney observes, noting Kentucky and Kansas both signed high-profile international players in the past week, while UCLA is close to inking two of its own. Sweeney notes not only is the talent gap between the U.S. and the rest of the world shrinking, there is an “increasing narrative from voices throughout the basketball world that development structures in place overseas are better for young players than the ones in the U.S.” UCLA HC Mick Cronin: “Here’s the difference: Everywhere but America, sports are not related to school. Everything is club, and there are junior teams that are tied underneath professional teams. They don’t have the confines of the academics that limits high school coaches in every state. … Any time a European kid has played basketball, [he] has been coached. There’s no pickup basketball. … They’re more mature in their understanding of moving without the ball, passing the ball, concepts.” The ability to creatively find ways for these players to earn NIL money without running afoul of the law has also opened the door for players, per ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, who notes there is an ongoing “sea change,” with college basketball now “significantly more attractive” than it had been for elite international players. Big Chair Developments…
+ Presbyterian moves quickly and promotes Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Operations/SWA Dee Nichols to become the Blue Hose's next AD. President Anita Gustafson: “Dee Nichols brings with her 24 years of leadership experience in intercollegiate athletics. At PC, she has worked closely with student-athletes and the coaching staff across all sports, and she is well-known and well-respected throughout the community. I am confident that Dee is the right person at the right time to be PC’s next athletic director.” (link)
+ Chattanooga AD Mark Wharton inks an extension through the 2027-28 academic year. Terms have yet to be disclosed. (link)
+ New Mexico State AD Mario Moccia’s salary is being paid through athletic foundation funds rather than university funds at the behest of state leaders following a May letter from Higher Education Department Cabinet Secretary Stephanie Rodriguez. The letter stated that “it is the position of the New Mexico Higher Education Department and Governor (Michelle) Lujan Grisham that, given the heinous nature of the incidents that occurred under Director Moccia’s tenure, state funds should not be applied toward his salary or compensation until and unless a thorough independent investigation has cleared him of any culpability or wrongdoing." An NMSU spokesperson this week told the Las Cruces Sun-News’ Jason Groves that Moccia's contract is still being paid with AAC funds until a New Mexico Attorney General investigation is completed. Moccia’s five-year extension took effect July 1. (link)

Realignment Rumblings…
+ Oregon and Washington are expected to join the Big Ten according to multiple sources. Yahoo's Dan Wetzel and Ross Dellenger report the duo will accept invitations that are expected to be offered today, adding: "Both schools are expected to agree to a cut rate — perhaps as low as 50 percent — of the Big Ten’s media revenue that could reach $65 million/year per institution. That is still more than the Pac-12’s proposed media deal with Apple TV+, which is estimated to be in the $20-25 million range." (link)
+ ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg: “Oregon and Washington would be all sports additions to Big Ten beginning in 2024, per sources. Football schedule will need to be redone after lot of work into the flex-protect plus model for 16 teams.” (link)
+ The UO Board of Trustees is set to hold an emergency meeting today at 5:30 ET to discuss “time sensitive athletic conference issues.” (link)
+ ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that while Arizona has applied to and been admitted to the Big 12, “conversations between the Big 12 and Utah and Arizona State ramped up Friday. (link)
+ Wildcat Authority’s Jason Scheer reports: “Things can change, but the plan is for there to be an official announcement from Arizona tomorrow.” (link)
+ Washington State President Kirk Schulz and AD Pat Chun have released a statement which expresses their disappointment “with the recent decisions by some of our Pac-12 peers. While we had hoped that our membership would remain together, this outcome was always a possibility, and we have been working diligently to determine what is next for [WSU]. We’ve prepared for numerous scenarios, including our current situation. With exceptional student-athletes, a strong Cougar tradition and incredible support from our fans, donors and alumni, we will chart the best path forward together.” (link)
+ Oregon State Representative Shelly Boshart Davis (D-Albany) is calling on House Speaker Dan Rayfield (D-Corvallis) to convene a panel tasked with studying the unintended consequences of Oregon’s move to the Big Ten. Boshart Davis: “As a graduate of Oregon State and a representative of a district that houses many OSU students, I am deeply concerned about the impacts on our state university system if the University of Oregon decides to leave the Pac-12. … If one of our major universities is going to make a unilateral decision that could impact Oregon’s budget, we should at least understand the full impacts. At the most, the people’s representatives should have a say.” (link)
+ The Pac-12’s difficulty to secure a media rights deal should “terrify any small to mid-sized league or sports conference,” according to SBJ’s John Ourand, who observes: “The message from traditional TV networks is clear: They are not going to break the bank for programming they see as nonessential. This is not a case of a popping bubble. Networks and streaming companies still prioritize sports rights. … Look also at The CW, which agreed to pay $115 million per year for NASCAR’s Xfinity Series. But as companies like Amazon and Disney/ESPN have laid off thousands of employees recently, they are being more mindful than ever about how much to pay for rights.” Regarding the Pac-12’s negotiations specifically, Ourand points out the “prospect of keeping the package away from the deep-pocketed Apple did not spur ESPN and Fox to join negotiations in a serious way. Every other television network and streaming service similarly viewed the Pac-12 as ‘nice-to-have’ programming, not ‘need-to-have’ programming. That’s the worst place a sports conference could be these days. (link)

Florida State is working with JPMorgan Chase to explore how its athletic department could raise capital from institutional funds, such as private equity, according to Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams, Scott Soshnick and Kurt Badenhausen, who report: “[Private Equity] giant Sixth Street is in advanced talks to lead a possible investment. … Institutional money has poured into professional sports in recent years, from the NBA and global soccer to F1 and golf, but this would break new ground by entering the multibillion-dollar world of college athletic departments. The school is considering a structure similar to many of those pro sports investments, where commercial rights are rolled into a new company, the private equity fund invests in that entity, and then recoups its money via future media/sponsorship revenue.” Also: “It’s unclear exactly which FSU entity is most involved in the process. Florida law allows its public universities to organize their athletic departments as separate nonprofits, and there is a complex web of entities that includes the school itself, its booster organization and these nonprofit athletic setups. Many public schools also have strict rules around transparent, competitive bidding for university contracts, and certain deal structures would need to be avoided so as not to jeopardize a university’s tax-exempt status.” (link)

North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham reassured the department the Tar Heels are staying in the ACC amidst all the chaos, telling The News & Observer’s Luke DeCock: “When the news cycle starts spinning like this, I have the obligation to let our staff know what I know and reassure them we’re going to be OK. That I value what they do. That the university values what they do. That’s my role, to reassure them that things are going to be fine. […] We have a $137 million budget. … We’re in good shape. […] The ACC’s a great league for us. We have no plans to leave the ACC. We’re going to strengthen the ACC and do everything we can to make our league as good as we possibly can. We’re going to value what we have. I’m not going to look over my shoulder at what we don’t have.” (link)

Politico’s Mia McCarthy notes NCAA President Charlie Baker is being well-received by both sides of the political aisle in Washington, D.C., and U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) remarks: “If Charlie Baker would have been here two, three years ago, we wouldn’t have this problem now.” Congresswoman Lori Trahan (D-MA) adds: “The NCAA has had their head in the sand for decades. But I’ve seen Charlie work with Democrats and a lot of different stakeholders to get things done. And so I’m optimistic that he’s going to transform the NCAA.” (link)

NABC Executive Director Craig Robinson joins NCAA correspondent Andy Katz to provide updates on the NABC’s advocacy and legislative strategy, including an ongoing review of the DI recruiting calendar, supporting a new legislative autonomy model for men’s basketball, evaluating the bracket composition of the DII tournament, and more. Robinson notes a 60-day transfer portal window is too long, and “we are advocating for a shorter period like 30 days, and I suspect we’ll end up somewhere in the middle. But 60 days is too long for coaches, too long for players, too long for prospective student-athletes.” Robinson also reiterates that a priority for redesigning the recruiting calendar is to give coaches some time to recharge, support their mental health and allow them to spend time with their families. “I suspect we’ll try to get some more dead periods in there to make that work…and hopefully by October we’ll have something to present to the council that might make some sense.” The rationale for seeking autonomy for men’s hoops, Robinson explains, is that “not all college sports are the same, and in Division I men's basketball we have unique challenges and opportunities. And its effect on student athletes is unmatched, and our effect on the overall ecosystem of the NCAA is unmatched.” Full interview. (link)

+ Georgia Tech Men’s Basketball HC Damon Stoudamire will earn $2.1M in the first year of his five-year contract. That total will increase by $100K each season. Stoudamire is eligible for a $50K bonus if the team’s APR is greater or equal to 950, $75K if greater or equal to 960, $100K if greater or equal to 970 and $100K if a single-year APR falls in the national top 10. Other bonuses include $100K for finishing in the top four of the regular season ACC standings and $100K for winning the regular season and/or conference tournament championship. Should Stoudamire voluntarily leave before April 30 he will owe the Yellow Jackets $5M. That total decreases by $1M each year. If Tech terminates Stoudamire’s contract without cause, it will owe the coach 100% of his contract in 2024 and 2025, 60% in 2026 and 50% in 2027 and 2028. (link)
