Wyoming AD Tom Burman covers several topics with the Casper Star Tribune’s Ryan Thorburn, including a potential Pac-12-Mountain West merger, about which he says: “We are not resting on our laurels and just waiting here hoping that we land in some sort of a revised Mountain Pacific league, whatever you want to call it. We are out in front of it. … Washington State and Oregon State are more similar to many of the Mountain West schools. Cal and Stanford are very unique institutions, probably unique nationally. So, they’re not probably ideally suited to be the four (to say), all right, we all have the same plan and the same goals because I’m guessing they’re a little different. But I don’t want to speak for them.” Burman also believes it would be best for the Cowboys to remain aligned with Air Force, Colorado State, New Mexico and Utah State, adding: “I would say this in the Mountain West Conference, if we all would stay together and not be fooled into thinking there’s something greater out there and joining a Power 5 league because the Pac-12, no matter who they add, is not going to be an Autonomous 5 league for very long. It’s clear and everybody around the country is talking about that. It’s just a matter of time and that will change its financial model dramatically, in my opinion, speaking for Tom Burman.” Lots more from Burman. (link); Also in podcast form. (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake examines the tractability of the Pac-12’s remaining four schools adding rather than merging, noting that the “Pac-12 still has valuable intellectual property and loads of television-network infrastructure. If the conference dissolves, the Pac-12 loses its NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament shares and ‘Power 5’ status for the soon-to-be-expanded College Football Playoff. The prevailing thought is that the conference needs to fly under the old Pac-12 banner. There’s just too much equity and brand involved even if eight schools are leaving in the summer of 2024.” Potential additions include San Diego State, Colorado State, Boise State, UNLV, Fresno State, SMU, Rice and Tulane… The Pac-12’s commissioner met with his remaining four board members multiple times on Friday, I’m told. Athletic department administrators at all four schools canceled non-essential meetings and immediately hunkered down, exploring their options.” (link)

Michigan regent Jordan Acker sounds off on conference realignment, asserts that “this expansion, like the several before it,” is driven by money at the expense of everything else, including student-athletes.” It's utterly indefensible on any other grounds. FACT: It will take less time for our student athletes in non-chartered travel to go from Ann Arbor to London than it will to Eugene. … This is where I find the NCAA and its behavior so wildly offensive. If this alleged oversight body, which claims it is high and mighty every time it runs to Congress demanding action, really cared about student-athletes, they'd get this nonsense under control. … Now, lets get to the heart of it: these college leaders…again talking about how the biggest threats to college sports are the transfer portal and NIL, and then go transfer portal a conference in a week in August. If the arguments for Congressional action had no merit before, now they look positively silly.” (link)
|
The latest round of realignment “could undermine efforts under NCAA president Charlie Baker to fortify amateurism from legal challenges,” Sportico’s Michael McCann writes, adding: “The NCAA has long argued college sports are qualitatively different from pro sports because the players are students who aren’t paid for their play. This feature allegedly enhances fan interest and ensures athletes are focused on being college students. As college sports has morphed into a multibillion-dollar industry, and as some college coaches earn millions of dollars a year, those arguments are harder to make.” American College of Trial Lawyers fellow/former New Hampshire Supreme Court Chief Justice John Broderick tells McCann it’s “pretty disingenuous for the NCAA to be working overtime to increase revenues for itself and member conferences and schools off the incredible skills and hard work of college athletes while at the same time insisting they should not share in any of the spoils. My sense is that appellate courts would look at that record with a jaundiced eye—and should.” (link)

Arizona State AD Ray Anderson remarks that even though the Sun Devils are headed to the Big 12, “I promise I'm not going to Morgantown. I'm going to assign that to (deputy AD) Jean Boyd. He can go to Morgantown. But send me to Texas and the rivalry with Arizona and starting a new one with BYU, Utah and Colorado." (link); West Virginia AD Wren Baker responds via tweet: “There are two kinds of people in the world. People who love West Virginia and people who haven’t been here.” (link)

Big Ten COO Kerry Kenny says of the conference’s football schedule once Washington and Oregon join: “[We] will look to incorporate most, if not all, of the principles from flex protect-plus at 18 now instead of 16. Some areas may need to adjust a bit to ensure a rotation can be built, but the foundation of wanting to play each other more, not less, and preserving rivalries will still guide the conversation.” That said, The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman takes a crack at constructing the 2024 schedule. Have a look. (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde observes that as “College Sports Inc., is kneecapping the athletic departments at Stanford and Cal in one fell swoop, it likely is heavily damaging two of the primary American Olympic farm systems. Maybe that will resonate with someone.” In assessing the Bay Area schools’ options, Forde notes one involves joining Oregon State and Washington State in a Mountain West merger. “Stanford and/or Cal would be joining relative peers in terms of their current football and men’s basketball standing, but would be far better than every other MWC school in almost every Olympic sport. The academic profiles would be disparate as well.” Another option is reaching out to the ACC, but “it’s an even worse fit than the Pac-12 schools joining the Big Ten geographically. … Also, there is no offer to join at this point. Cal and Stanford are more likely to dilute profit than enhance it, unless the adding of members would open the ESPN vault for a media-rights renegotiation.” Other options include operating as football independents and joining a league for other sports; de-emphasizing football and focusing on everything else; and finding a unique new revenue stream outside of TV money. Regarding the latter, Forde suggests (while acknowledging their long odds) approaching the USOPC for funding in sports in which the schools regularly provide Olympians or finding non-restricted endowment money to help fund athletics. ESPN’s David Hale and Andrea Adelson examine the motivation behind Florida State’s dissatisfaction with the ACC and how the rest of the league is reacting. One source suggests: "One could argue they're just trying to create chaos and that they thought the only way to make it work would be to break the league up. Part of the theory here is they bang the drum real loud and eventually everybody else would panic." While league ADs like North Carolina’s Bubba Cunningham and Miami’s Dan Radakovich reacted to FSU President Richard McCullough’s remarks last week by reiterating the importance of strengthening the ACC, one league administrator tells Hale and Adelson the ACC is already losing the PR battle with the Big 12 being viewed as stable and expanding, while the ACC looks to be teetering. FSU’s public criticism only exacerbates those optics. Hale and Adelson: “If FSU is planning to leave anyway, an athletic director said, there's little reason to give them more money now. Instead, ACC schools could simply wait for FSU to be the one to cut a sizable check on its way out the door.” (link)

Rhode Island AD Thorr Bjorn sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown at the 2023 NACDA Convention to talk about perspective and the importance of institutional collaboration in fundraising and capital development. Bjorn notes the Rams have planned $60M – $80M in transformational renovations over the next 3-5 years with support from the state. Being the flagship university for a small state, Bjorn explains that “you end up with great contacts and connections and conversations” with state lawmakers which allows the university to have constructive dialogue about the needs of its athletic facilities. That doesn’t absolve the URI of its fundraising duties, but Bjorn points out that by getting support from the state “we've taken away any donors’ argument of saying, ‘Well, what's the state willing to do? What’s the school going to do? Well, you know what, they've stepped up in a way that's never been stepped up before, so now let's go do our part. Let's continue to raise money to make what we're talking about even better.” More. (link)

While the Apple-MLS marriage appears to be off to a strong start, Front Office Sports’ A.J. Perez, Michael McCarthy and Doug Greenberg note teams are in the midst of making some adjustments, particularly as it relates to sponsorship. “A ‘significant’ amount of ad inventory from clubs’ local broadcasts — including commercial spots, scoreboard integration, and other in-game ad placements — became limited once Apple took over as the exclusive home for those games, a source with knowledge of the situation told FOS. … While some teams may not be making as much from local advertising — at least in the first year of the deal — sources said those concerns will lessen as clubs continue to adapt to the new setup and as the revenue sharing provisions escalate in future seasons.” From sponsors’ perspective, any viewership dropoff (neither Apple nor MLS have disclosed that data) could be offset by the percentage of high-income households who tend to subscribe to streaming services for sports. The Day It All Changed…
+ The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel reports the final offer from Apple to Pac-12 members was a base annual payout of $25M per school with kickers at 1.7M total subscribers to the all-streaming deal of $31.7M per school & at 5M subscribers of $50M+ per institution. However “there were no guarantees whether Apple would simulcast certain games on a linear network, as it does with Fox for MLS, in which case conference games would reach a much smaller universe than other major conferences.” League members also expected to see a second option with more traditional elements for exposure “but that deal, which involved multiple partners, fell apart at the 11th hour.” Mandel also gets this from a leader outside the league who was briefed on the conversations: “The mountain schools and Oregon and Washington didn’t want to have to do this. They wanted it to be true that they could hit those (Apple) numbers. They wanted to be out west with those travel partners. They didn’t want to be in the Big Ten with a bad deal and those crazy travel details. Even at that time (Thursday night), it could have been held together, but that’s a lot to process in a short time. And that $50 million figure they thought they could hit on the high end, that wasn’t realistic.“ (link)
+ Washington President Ana Marie Cauce: “(The Apple deal) was not the deal that we had been discussing just days before, and it was not going to secure (our future). When you have a deal that people are saying one of the best aspects of it is, ‘you can get out in two years,’ that tells you a lot. This was about national visibility for our players, being on linear TV so they can be seen, so they could have the national exposure. It was about stability. It was about having a future that we could count on and built towards.” (link)
+ Arizona State President Michael Crow & Sun Devils AD Ray Anderson met with the media yesterday. The pair took exception to the idea ASU ultimately made the decision to dissolve the Pac-12: “We were trying to save it and stayed in the trenches as long as we could until it became clear that it was no longer an option.” Crow also framed the Apple opportunity from his perspective: “We were offered a media contract by the Apple corporation, which was a technological 23rd century Star Trek thing with really unbelievable capability that we were very interested, ASU was very interested in. Digitization of all ASU football games, all men’s basketball games and all women’s basketball games instantly and available anywhere in the world at the touch of a button from any device, anywhere. Digitally then manipulable by the watcher both during the game, in between games, in between multiple games at the same time as well as usable by athletes for recruitment and so forth and so on after the games as an archive of things. We thought there was some risk, but huge opportunity. Several of the schools were committed to that, but it created a destabilizing moment of traditional versus this modern thing.” Anderson went on to mention the potential for divisions within the Big 12: “We're going to try to in the Olympic sports go to divisions and we'll probably do that in football as well. For travel, regionalization makes sense. But it really makes sense in the Olympic sports.” Lots more. (link)
+ Ohio State AD Gene Smith chimes in: “This is all about television partnerships. I can’t say they run things, but they’re a big partner. They’re a huge partner. … It’s about money. We still generate more money through ticket sales than television revenue. In an evolving television space, when you think about where we were and now we’ve got Fox, BTN, CBS and NBC and the top three markets in the country with more inventory, the viewership is going to be ridiculous.” (link)
+ The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler indicates more conversations between remaining Pac-12 schools & their Mountain West peers will continue tomorrow with this notable wrinkle: “Mountain West bylaws contain procedures for suspending members but not outright eliminating (members), although rules can be changed with nine of 12 votes from its presidents. The founding Mountain West members would not be in immediate jeopardy, sources indicated, but San Jose State, Nevada and Hawaii might be.” More from Zeigler: “The logical solution might be operating under the Mountain West (TV) contract through 2025-26, adjusted upward for the new additions. Then they’d negotiate a new deal that wouldn’t command Big 12 money but could double the $5 million or so that Mountain West schools get now.” (link)
|
Reactions & Analysis…
+ Crakes Media’s Patrick Crakes: “APPL had unique opportunity to enter college sports at a high level with incremental $45M per year ($5M more per school ) to get Pac 9 members to $28M annually but passed. Given that suggest properties counting on rights auctions driven by streaming platforms need to rethink that.” (link)
+ Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel: “They say pigs get fat and hogs get slaughtered, but in college sports all that seems to happen is the hogs get richer. The truth is, games will be played and the sport will prevail. It always has. Those TV execs are convinced it always will. They are probably correct. So hate it, lament it, curse it, complain about it. No one blames you. Just know it isn’t stopping.” (link)
+ The Athletic’s Dana O’Neil: “...very often booms are followed by busts, and much like the homeowner never sees his or her property value tanking, university presidents seem immune to the idea that the steady flow of cash is not forever. Right now, people are still tuning in to college football, but just how much interest that Washington-Northwestern traditional battle draws remains to be seen.” (link)

In the first of a three-part series of Q&As with the Tallahassee Democrat, Florida State AD Michael Alford touches on a variety of things surrounding the football program. On how HC Mike Norvell has used the transfer portal effectively: “I've mentioned it before, but setting it up like an NFL team, and how they go about evaluating talent, evaluating character, and we were able to get on the forefront of that and structure that staff. So we could go out and do great evaluations of people entering the portal and entering free agency and find out what kind of players they are. But are they a fit? … I think he's done a marvelous job of not only finding talented individuals on the field but also extremely bright and quality individuals off the field. I tip my hat to him and his staff in their evaluation process.” On the path forward for NIL: “I come from the NFL and dealing with the NFLPA, I firmly believe in agent registration. I firmly believe in fair market value being measured in these arrangements. Then I believe in a third party administrator to go and be kind of [a collection where] it has to run through and to monitor and so it's those things that (NCAA) President Charlie Baker is talking about now.” (link)
|
Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek says the department’s NIL fundraising performance, compared to other members of the SEC, falls in line with its typical department revenue rankings among its league peers, as the Razorbacks rank ninth or tenth in both categories. Of note, at least one Razorback from all 19 sports has reached an NIL deal. Five years ago the Hogs made a $160M investment to improve their athletic training facilities, but Yurachek notes: “There's some decisions we're going to have to make in college athletics if NIL continues in this direction. There's only so many ways you can divide that revenue pie before you're going to have to start making some tough decisions regarding bricks and mortar versus NIL.” For his part, Yurachek is against a revenue sharing model: “I feel like right now, we share our revenue with student-athletes by providing them scholarships, by providing meals, by providing gear, by providing mental health and other medical care and by providing strength and conditioning. Not all 465 of our student-athletes are on scholarship, but to me, that's revenue sharing right there because we invest a significant amount of money [in them]. … There may be some high level Power 5 schools that could share additional revenues and survive in the collegiate model. But there's not any Group of Five schools that can share any revenue with student-athletes other than what they already provide and continue to survive.” Lots more. (link)

Michigan State Deputy AD for Championship Resources Ashton Henderson joins AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown at the 2023 NACDA Convention for a conversation about returning to one’s roots, establishing core values and evolving as a leader. Henderson credits the NCAA Leadership Development staff and programs for helping him connect with his why, leading to the creation of his core values, value proposition and “3 C Model” of leadership – culture, communication and connectivity. Henderson also discusses how to coach people to add value to their organization as opposed to adding value to themselves and their individual career trajectories: “So it's always about the greater good – for me, always keeping it simple but also showing people how they fit and how they can do things better than me. That’s something that [Michigan State AD] Alan [Haller] has done and helped us immensely as leaders to really lean in and say, ‘Hey, I need you to do this because that's not my strength,’ and that's a true leader when you can say like I need to step back I need you and I need all of you to do these things in your own unique way to take us to where we want to go.” Full conversation on ADU. Ball State is the latest school to partner with Collegiate Sports Connect, joining nearly 40 others at the Division I level. Cardinals’ AD Jeff Mitchell: “Hiring talented individuals to strengthen our culture of developing leaders and winners is the most important element of our work. We are excited to align with Collegiate Sports Connect as we identify and recruit difference makers for Ball State athletics.” (link)

Penry Advisors’ Jason Penry examines the role athletics plays in the overall higher ed fundraising landscape, noting: “Research has shown that athletics can serve as a catalyst to increase enrollment, increase national exposure, and build stronger ties to alumni and the university community by providing numerous engagement opportunities.” Specifically, Penry highlights two ways athletics adds value. “First, athletics is typically among the major production areas for comprehensive university capital campaigns. Secondly, athletics provides multiple opportunities for engagement to help academics pursue and secure transformative gifts.” Penry analyzed six higher ed production areas of completed comprehensive campaigns of at least $4B for public institutions and found that “athletics production is noticeably comparable to business and engineering school fundraising. This strengthens the case for athletics’ importance within the higher education ecosystem. … In a resource-short environment, which is expected to intensify in the years and decades ahead, collaborations are key. University advancement and athletics working closely together is good business.” (link)

With July marking the hottest month on Earth in recorded history, ESPN’s Dan Murphy and Dan Hajducky catch up with Korey Stringer Institute CEO Douglas Casa, an expert on heat illness among athletes, who says while professional and college leagues have made strides in combating heat illness, he remains concerned about younger athletes. "I don't think the policies will keep up with the dramatic changes that we're seeing. I just don't think they're going to keep pace with them because it takes so long to change health and safety policies, especially in high school sports... high school sports are [the] freaking Wild West." Casa also explains most heat issues occur in August when players have yet to acclimate at the start of training camps. The safest move, he suggests, might be rethinking the timing of full seasons for a sport like football. "I'm telling you, 15 or 20 years from now, football is going to be a spring sport. We're not gonna get people out on August 1, the hottest time of the year in America, the most humid time, in full gear with 300-pound linemen training in the worst conditions possible. ... If I started this all over again 100 years ago, I would've had football as a spring sport and baseball be the fall sport." (link)
