Realignment Rumblings: (Possible) Future…
+ The ACC will begin discussing the potential of adding Stanford and Cal, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who notes that the process is in its “embryonic stages” at this point. Separate calls between league ADs and presidents are playing out over yesterday and today, and one ACC source tells Thamel: “It’s complicated. There's a significant travel expense. I think it's going to be all over the board with both the ADs and the presidents in what they may want to do. [Cal and Stanford] would likely have to take a reduced share. Eventually, though, they're going to want to become a full share." The source adds that there’s “no windfall for the current members” by adding the Bay Area schools. (link)
+ Meanwhile, expansion involving Stanford and Cal was "not even close to happening" as of last night, one ACC source tells 247Sports’ Brandon Marcello. That said, Marcello points out part of the reasoning for westward expansion for the ACC involves ESPN’s ability to “regain some footing on the West Coast after losing the top four markets on the West Coast with the departures of UCLA, USC, Oregon and Washington for the Big Ten.” (link)
+ JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher pegs the odds of Stanford and Cal joining the ACC at 50/50 after speaking to some individuals involved in the talks. Meanwhile, an Oregon State source says the Beavers have been “casting our line in every body of water” since news broke on Friday, and Canzano predicts OSU and Washington State will “immediately seek membership in the Mountain West” if Stanford and Cal leave for the ACC. “Or they could both help create a ‘Pacific Division’ of the American Athletic Conference, depending on which offers a better short-term landing spot.” If Stanford and Cal are not invited to the ACC, Canzano believes the four remaining Pac-12 members have three immediate options: go their separate ways, stick together and try to rebuild the Pac-12 or merge with the MWC. “Anyone think Stanford wants to be caught dead in a conference that includes San Jose State and Fresno State? Me neither. But let’s see. Could Stanford go independent? Sure, it could try. It’s not Notre Dame, but it could make the attempt. I wonder where that leaves Cal, though. Then again, friendship is not a thing anymore, remember?” (link)
+ Action Network’s Brett McMurphy reports the Big 12 has “no appetite” for adding any of the remaining Pac-12 schools or San Diego State, with one source saying: “We have no interest in doing anything. We’re done.” (link)

Realignment Rumblings: Past…
+ Washington State President Kirk Schulz explains the Pac-12 Board of Directors “met 30 times over the past 12 months in an attempt to work out a future media rights deal that all conference members found suitable. During this time, we had multiple media partners spend months discussing media deals only to drop out at the last minute, mostly due to the rapidly changing sports media environment.” Schulz goes on to confirm reports that indicated there was a general feeling the league would stay together on Thursday night. “On Friday morning, we were shocked when the University of Washington and the University of Oregon announced they had accepted Big Ten invitations.” Since then, Schulz and Cougars AD Pat Chun have spoken with multiple conference and university leaders and are “pursuing every possible opportunity to ensure that we have multiple options moving forward. I will be standing up a small group of faculty, staff, athletic administrators, and student leaders to provide feedback on conference options for WSU as our pathway forward becomes more clear in the days and weeks ahead. This group will be announced to the Cougar community by the end of the week.” (link)
+ Utah President Taylor Randall shares his thoughts on the TV deal Apple presented to the Pac-12: “It was a new type of [way to view] college sports. So that was both intriguing and made us all kind of pause and say, ‘We’ve got to analyze this a little further, right?’ It wasn’t like saying, ‘Hey, we’re gonna say yes to a contract that we’ve done for years and years.’ We took a lot of time, just kind of diving through it, you know. At times you felt like you were more of a venture capitalist in analyzing something. [...] Every president in the Pac-12 – including Washington and Oregon – was trying to hold this thing together.” (link, link)
+ SBJ’s John Ourand reports Fox, CBS and ESPN last week each made “last-minute bids” for packages of Pac-12 games, with Fox offering around $35-40M per year for 13 games. Ourand also notes CBS “engaged with the Pac-12 over the past couple of weeks, but it only put forward a bid for a handful of basketball games – around five in total. Sources had expected ESPN and Amazon to share the Pac-12’s ‘A’ package. But as it turned out, Amazon never submitted a bid. Neither did NBC. The delay from last year, when ESPN, Fox and CBS were willing to do a deal, to last week, when all three put forth small bids, was devastating to the Pac-12. A changing media landscape – with shrinking subscriber numbers and employee layoffs – caused the networks to be much more disciplined in where to spend their money than they have in the past.” Regarding Fox’s role in Oregon and Washington’s departure, Ourand reports that “my sources tell me that Fox was much more reactive with Oregon and Washington. Once the schools saw the Apple bid, they reached out to the Big Ten about switching conferences. That’s when the Big Ten called Fox to see if its main network partner would help fund part of the move.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker in a statement to Sports Illustrated indicates he shares “concerns about the impact that the recent spate of conference realignment activities will have on student-athletes’ well-being. The recent conference moves highlight what I found during my review of the issues facing the NCAA – the growing gap between well-resourced Division I schools and the rest of the division is highly disruptive for all of DI and college sports overall. I believe DI university and college presidents, commissioners and the NCAA should work together to explore ways to address the impact this growing gap is having on student-athlete well-being and the competitive equity issues across the division.” (link)

Now live on Connect: Western Michigan AD Dan Bartholomae sits down with D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle to discuss an array of topics, including the women’s basketball locker room renovation project, the Broncos strategic plan, the hiring of Football HC Lance Taylor and what’s on the horizon for WMU. Bartholomae: “We announced our strategic plan in January, so what that means for us is we've got a blueprint and we've got a foundation to build upon. We've got a story that we can tell our donors, our fan base, our staff. We've got a pathway, and we know where we want to go. … We got our life skills program off and running here this past spring, and we're looking to build upon that – career development, financial management, NIL, of course. We're looking to now bring that life skills program into the community to start tying together not only engagement from a career development and mentorship standpoint, but also from a brand-building and NIL standpoint.” Full Q&A. Nevada SportsNet’s Chris Murray takes a look at Nevada’s efforts to bolster its athletics budget by $10M per year, and former Wolf Pack VP of Administration and Finance Vic Redding says that shortly after coming on board, President Brian Sandoval made it clear athletics funding was a priority, and “and about the same time [Wolf Pack AD] Stephanie Rempe comes on board and we said, ‘We've got to come up with a sustainable funding model that allows the AD to do long-term projections and allows the institution to do long-term projections. There was a perception over the years that we were not funding the basic block and tackle of the department and saying, ‘Just go fundraise for that.’ The donors are in a much better place where they're funding the new initiatives, the things that take you to the next level instead of funding the operating budget.” Rempe remains optimistic about the Wolf Pack’s potential “because I feel like if we're doing things right here — more so than in places I've been before — if you're doing things right here in the community and the sustainability and how you treat people and how you get involved, this community doesn't go up and down based on winning and losing. This community really supports the Wolf Pack.” More. (link)

With Minnesota as the only state in the Big Ten footprint that has yet to legalize gambling, St. Thomas Assoc. AD for Compliance Andrew Nelson notes student-athletes are not immune from its growing presence in society. “It's become kind of culturized. If you turn on ESPN, there's an [over/under] line with everything in the crawl. One of my biggest shocks was seeing St. Thomas men's basketball on the bottom scroll with the line. That was a big wakeup call for where we are now from where we were." Nelson also notes that “as you get down toward the [Iowa] border, they certainly advertise that sportsbook [the FanDuel Sportsbook at Diamond Jo Casino] on billboards. It's like Wall Drug." Meanwhile, Rutgers Football HC Greg Schiano is cognizant of the role NIL can play in sports gambling among student-athletes. "Now with NIL, they do have money. Does that sometimes mean some of the evils that come with it? I hope not. … Sometimes when you're 18 to 22, you're not quite as ready to handle it." (link)

“A new suit filed against the NCAA has again alleged that its Academic Performance Program disproportionately penalizes student-athletes at historically Black colleges and universities, with a current HBCU student claiming that the association has ‘a long history of discriminating against Black student-athletes’ through the implementation of ‘its so-called academic reforms.’” More behind the Law360 paywall. Dish Chairman Charlie Ergen is nearing a deal to merge his major holdings, Dish Network and EchoStar, which the Wall Street Journal’s Lauren Thomas and Drew FitzGerald note would provide the “financial flexibility to build a nationwide wireless network strong enough to take on the likes of AT&T and Verizon.” While precise terms have yet to be disclosed, a deal could be reached as early as today. EchoStar CEO Hamid Akhavan is expected to serve as President/CEO of the combined company upon the closing of the deal. (link)

“Americans accustomed to bargain-rate fashion and flat-screen TVs might soon be reckoning with higher prices,” according to the Wall Street Journal’s Jon Emont, who adds: “Asia, the world’s factory floor and the source of much of the stuff Americans buy, is running into a big problem: Its young people, by and large, don’t want to work in factories. … Younger workers, better-educated than their parents and veterans of Instagram, TikTok and other social media, are deciding their work lives shouldn’t unfold inside factory walls.” Factory owners are consequently trying out several strategies to entice workers, including the introduction of cafes, free yoga classes and increased wages, but employee shortages persist. Garment factory UnAvailable Co-Founder, Paul Norriss: “There’s nowhere left on the planet that’s going to be able to give you what you want. People are going to have to change their consumer habits, and so are brands.” (link)

Utah State has selected Big Ten Deputy Commissioner/Chief Sports Officer Diana Sabau as its next AD, effective August 21. USU President Elizabeth Cantwell: “From understanding campus culture to conference realignment to what it takes to win, Diana is a skilled and experienced professional, and I feel very lucky that we have been able to recruit her. … Throughout our recruitment process, we have run a search dedicated to professionalism, fairness and thoughtfulness. We very carefully considered each candidate’s leadership abilities, experience, proven track record, appreciation for who we are at USU and ability to lead us into a future that all Aggies will be proud of. Diana clearly exemplifies these qualities.” Collegiate Sports Associates consulted on the search. (link)

Realignment Rumblings…
+ The California Board of Regents will meet in closed session tomorrow to discuss Cal’s Pac-12 conference membership. (link)
+ Arizona President Robert Robbins during today’s press conference announcing Arizona’s move to the Big 12 noted the Pac-12’s media deal with Apple was for $23M per school with no games on linear TV. "Those were the two things that were problematic when evaluating the long-term stability of the contract. And of course that it was subscription based." On working with Arizona State President Michael Crow during the process: “I don't think there was anybody bringing anybody along. The two of us thought this was the best thing for our state and the rivalry. ... We wanted to stay together." Robbins also says he spoke with Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark just one time but reiterated that he couldn’t entertain an offer from the Big 12 until he saw a Pac-12 media rights offer. “All the while I was confident that we would get a deal that we would all like that would keep us together. I think things didn't really change until right at the end." (link)
+ The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner asks Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff if he plans to resign. Response: “I’m loyal to a fault (and probably to my personal detriment). Had plenty of chances to leave over the past two years when the breadth of the challenges were already obvious and decided to stick it out and try to do the best I could. We still have a lot of work ahead of us to try and minimize the impact on the student athletes, and I’m still committed to that.” (link)
+ ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports there are two calls scheduled in the next 24 hours “for the ACC to vet and have early exploratory discussions on the potential addition of Cal and Stanford. One is for ACC athletic directors and the other for the league's presidents and chancellors. It’s a fluid landscape for the four leftover Pac-12 schools, and there’s myriad options being discussed. This one of them.” Thamel also remarks on the Pat McAfee Show: “The key to keeping a conference together is you keep your NCAA (Men’s Basketball) Tournament bid and, for at least the next two years when the [College Football Playoff] goes to at 12, you would in theory potentially keep your playoff access. So, there is some motivation to stay together and to stay a little bit sensible and to stay on the West Coast. You also keep all the NCAA Tournament units, which ends up being tens of millions of dollars.” (link, link)
+ The AAC is interested in adding “any or all of” the remaining Pac-12 schools, On3’s Eric Prisbell reports. One source tells him: “We would be a good landing spot for those schools given our existing ESPN deal, which has a strong linear component, along with our major cities and institutional profiles.” Prisbell adds: “The conversations that are ensuing now are likely between the remaining Pac-12 schools and schools in the AAC, rather than between conference offices. A merger is not said to be in play at the moment; it would entail a variety of complicating factors. Instead, the AAC is focused on potentially adding Pac-12 schools.” (link)
+ CBS’ Dennis Dodd: “How quickly did things change last week [for the Pac-12]? Source tells me the press release was written to announce Apple deal on Friday with expansion to follow quickly. Schools had agreed to GOR (but we were told that weeks ago). 9 am all-staff meeting [at the Pac-12] was cancelled at 7:45 am.” (link)
+ Action Network’s Brett McMurphy adds: “How committed was Pac-12 to staying together? Following last Tuesday’s meeting w/ commish George Kliavkoff, a Pac-12 president contacted a Big 12 president & asked if Big 12 ‘could take all (9) of us, except for Oregon State & Washington State?’” (link)

Fanatics has filed a countersuit against Panini America in which it argues: “Even casual observers will see that Panini’s antitrust claims seek to turn the antitrust laws on their head. Fanatics Collectibles is a dynamic new player that presented expanded economic opportunities to licensors, including players’ associations and leagues, for their intellectual property. These licensors — who are led by experienced and knowledgeable businesspeople — decided that their future was brighter if they licensed their intellectual property to Fanatics Collectibles. That is not an antitrust violation. It reflects competition and the fundamental principle that an entity has the freedom to license its intellectual property rights exclusively, non-exclusively, or not at all.” Action Network’s Darren Rovell reports the suit also alleges that Panini America CEO Mark Warsop provided falsified numbers in order to receive a larger termination fee from Fanatics after Fanatics won licenses from the NFL and NBA. An attorney for Panini argues: “If Panini had been as unsuccessful as Fanatics pretends, Fanatics would not have had to use decades long exclusive dealing arrangements to lock it out of the market, or improperly cut off Panini's supply, interfere with Panini's production facilities and raid its employees." Sportico’s Michael McCann submits that the consolidation of the Power 5 into a Super 2 could actually save college sports. “Separating the few dozen true powerhouses that generate the most revenue, attract the highest TV ratings and recruit pro prospects would make it easier to professionalize them without having to do the same for the more than 1,000 other schools in Divisions I, II and III. This isn’t such a radical idea.” McCann cites a law review paper he co-authored in which he argues the question over whether college athletes should be designated as employees doesn’t matter much “unless we know which category of college athletes we have in mind. We suggest a multifactor question that draws from labor and employment law principles. It measures how meaningfully athletes at a college provide revenue, whether those athletes substantially enhance their colleges’ goodwill and whether the proceeds derived from a college sports team are passed along to their team’s coaches and administrators in the form of above-market salaries. … Players and colleges wouldn’t need to reinvent the wheel. They’d have decades of negotiations between major pro leagues and players’ associations to draw upon.” More from McCann. (link)

ESPN’s M.A. Voepel and Alexa Philippou examine how realignment will impact women’s basketball, and Philippou submits that “we won't be able to fully predict the impact on Stanford until, presumably, the school lands in a new conference (there'd be a huge difference between, say, the Big Ten, a new-look Pac-12 and the Mountain West). Philippou on the Big 12: “Losing Texas and Oklahoma is a major blow. But adding Arizona, Arizona State, Utah and Colorado is a huge boon for a league that's in the midst of an identity shift and is trying to re-establish itself as a women's basketball force (after all, just last season none of the six Big 12 schools to appear in the NCAA tournament advanced to the Sweet 16).” (link)

Several Big Ten men’s basketball coaches talk with The Athletic’s Brian Hamilton and Brendan Quinn about the logistics of an 18-team bicoastal league, and most admit they have no idea how it will work. One HC notes: “The reality is, we have to get on it, because they’re joining next year. I’ve felt the last couple years, as good as our league has been, that teams have been a little bit worn out at the end, when you add the conference tournament, too. The wear and tear of it all, the grind of it all — at the end of the day, we want to have (NCAA) Tournament success. We want to make sure we’re in a position where we get a lot of bids, but also when we get to the NCAAs that we’re positioned to make deep runs.” Rutgers HC Steve Pikiell believes the league is headed toward a conference-only schedule. “That’s what TV wants. It wants those games over the nonconference games anyway.” Ohio State HC Chris Holtmann is among the several HCs who worry about travel’s impact on performance: “Any of us who’ve looked at sleep studies and travel and nutrition and how that impacts performance over a long period of time — it has a real impact. NBA teams will tell you that. College teams would tell you that. That’d probably be my only question for those of us outside of football.” More. (link)
