SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey joins the Paul Finebaum Show and says of the future of the College Football Playoff: “I think it’s wise for us to take a step back and reconsider what the format might look like, given these changed circumstances. I have not had any meaningful conversations, but I think we have to acknowledge it is on everyone's mind, pending the outcome of some of these membership movements. Right now, we still have 10 FBS conferences, but there are obviously questions on whether or not that remains. And yeah, that could create a thought in my mind and in others’ of some level of adjustment being made.” (link); Sankey also addressed the SEC’s current thinking about realignment and reiterated that money should follow, not lead, and “so those are still part of our ethos, part of what we think about — we want to maximize our revenue, but we have this contiguous group that has a national platform. We don’t need to be in four time zones to generate interest on the West Coast, or really across the globe. … We’re always going to be attentive to what’s happening around us, and perhaps there will be some opportunity. But there has to be some philosophical alignment. And it’s not something where we’re out actively recruiting other institutions.” More from Sankey. (link)

San Diego State AD John David Wicker disputes CBS’ Dennis Dodd’s reporting about the Aztecs’ attempts to spearhead a new Power 5 conference, writing on Twitter: “FAKE NEWS! Disappointed in the number of absolute fake articles that get written these days! … The first two paragraphs of this article contain numerous false or misleading statements. SDSU has been actively involved in conference realignment discussions before and after the latest round of Pac-12 defections. However, SDSU has not sought to create a new conference or seek A5 status for a new conference. SDSU has had no communication with the American Athletic Conference, nor any of its member institutions. SDSU continues to be an active participant with the Mountain West Conference as the conference assesses the best path forward during this turbulent time in our industry.” (link); Meanwhile, MWC Commissioner Gloria Nevarez says “Everything is still on the table. From sitting where we are today, we’re not going to foreclose any options. I mean, every option, including a merger, still has a lot of due diligence that needs to be done.” (link)

The ACC is “still evaluating” Stanford and Cal as potential members, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports, adding: “No decisions are expected imminently, as another call of the athletic directors just to further dig into the finances is expected in the near future. A timeline is fluid, according to sources, but it would be surprising if a decision either way was reached this week.” Meanwhile, one ACC source tells Thamel: "I think the undercurrent is that [the overall landscape] is clearly evolving. For us to sit here and say it's not going to evolve, or be different than what it is today, would be really shortsighted. I'm not sure what schools are going to do, but to sit here and say it's going to be static -- that isn't happening." Another notes the “value equation isn’t always tied to money” and asks: “Are we really going to sit here and say two of the best institutions in the world have no value? That's a crazy notion to me." (link)

UNLV AD Erick Harper acknowledges the Mountain West’s $34M exit fee is cost-prohibitive for teams who may be looking to find a new conference home. “That’s crippling to a lot of institutions that would have to pay it. By all means, I don’t want to pay $34M.” As far as how the MWC plans to approach realignment as it relates to the remaining Pac-4 schools, Harper remarks: “This is not a decision made by me. It’s collective. We also have the Board of Regents. So we all have to do our due diligence.” (link)

UCLA Football HC Chip Kelly submits that Notre Dame has essentially proven out the most efficient way to approach conference realignment: “Notre Dame is an independent in football, but they’re in a conference for everything else. Why aren’t we all independent for football? Take the 64 teams in Power Five and make that one division, take the 64 teams in Group of Five, make that another division. We play for a championship, they play for a championship and no one else gets affected. Our sport’s different than everybody else — we only play once a week, travel’s not a big deal for football, but it is a big deal for other sports. So that’s my theory.” (link)

Cincinnati has sold out of football season tickets for the upcoming season. Once the student allocation process is complete, UC will have sold more than 25,300 season tickets, breaking the school record for a third straight season. (link)

North Carolina Central will charge $40 for tickets to its opener against Winston-Salem State (DII), HBCU Gameday’s Steven Gaither reports, noting the cost is “twice as much as in-advance tickets for home games against Campbell, South Carolina State and Delaware State. The $40 ticket price is just $5 below the homecoming matchup with Norfolk State. The lawn tickets are exactly the same.” Gaither also notes the 2021 matchup between the two programs drew a crowd of nearly 11K, larger than that season’s homecoming game against Norfolk State as well as conference matchups against South Carolina State and Delaware State that year. … [NCCU] has compensated Winston-Salem State with $60K per year including money and tickets to sell in recent matchups.” (link)

+ Contract terms for new Utah State AD Diana Sabau include base pay of $550K with a 3% annual increase. There’s also up to $50K per year in possible incentives. If USU makes a move without cause, Sabau would be owed 75% of remaining salary on the five-year deal. If Sabau exits before the end of next June she should owe the university $1M, which then falls by $250K per year for the next three, then down to $150K in the final year of the agreement. All per CollegeAD. (link)

UAlbany will launch a Women’s Rowing program to begin full competition in the Fall of 2024. The addition will be the 19th sport in the Great Danes portfolio. EA Sports is reaching out to schools to compile information about rivalry games, Extra Points publisher Matt Brown reports, noting the company is asking schools to submit their top rivalries. EA: “For instance, Notre Dame plays USC in the ‘Battle for the Jeweled Shillelah’ and they also play Michigan State in the ‘Battle for the Megaphone’. EA is not certain that they can get to every game in year one – but they want to know about them and they plan to include as many as possible. Please note that EA is prepared to showcase the primary sponsor of the game (as it will for bowl games) if the school would like. EA is asking that schools provide passthrough rights to use sponsor marks. Also, please note that EA does not have additional budget for securing IP rights to these games. EA management is committed to allocating development resources toward these rivalry games but the hope is that the schools own the rights to the title and trophy for these games – and that schools will allow EA to feature these rivalry games as part of their financial commitment to each participating school ie., no additional cost.” Brown also reports the following regarding the ongoing legal dispute between EA and The Brandr Group: “For what it’s worth, I’ve heard from licensing professionals affiliated with multiple Power Five institutions that they adamantly do not want to get involved in any legal disputes between Brandr, EA, and any other licensing partners, and that potential litigation may impact their decision to work with Brandr, (or other group licensing firms that ask for some measure of exclusivity) moving forward.” (link)

+ Under Armour reported Q1 earnings of $0.02 per share, beating analysts’ estimates of a loss of $0.03 per share, and marking the fourth consecutive quarter UA has surpassed EPS and revenue expectations. (link); Revenue, meanwhile, was down 2% to $1.3B, in line with estimates, and net income was $9M. By channel, wholesale revenue declined 6% to $742M, and DTC revenue increased 4% to $544M, driven by a 6% bump in e-commerce revenue and a 3% increase in owned store revenue. CEO Stephanie Linnartz: “As we continue executing against our Protect This House 3 strategic priorities, including our prioritization of North America, we have taken several important steps. These steps include leadership changes, amplifying storytelling to drive global brand heat and optimizing our product engine to deliver elevated design and groundbreaking innovations that athletes covet. I am confident that we will achieve the improved growth and profitability this brand is capable of over the long run.” (link)
+ Wheels Up is seeking emergency funding, according to Bloomberg News. The company has lost money each quarter since going public. The statement from a Wheels Up representative: “As previously disclosed, Wheels Up is evaluating strategic options to transform our business in close coordination with our financial stakeholders, industry participants, and advisors. Our priority remains continuing to deliver an extraordinary experience for members, and doing that safely, reliably and on-time.” (link)
+ Vox’s Peter Kafka examines what the ESPN-Penn partnership means for the state of sports, media and gambling and notes that for ESPN it means far more symbolically than it does financially. “This afternoon, I asked gambling and media executives why ESPN hadn’t made a deal with more established gambling companies, either old-school brands like MGM or new digital leaders like DraftKings and FanDuel. Their answer: Those guys didn’t need ESPN to thrive in sports betting. And they certainly wouldn’t rebrand their existing sports betting operations with ESPN.” (link)
+ Workweek CEO Adam Ryan takes a more nuanced look at reports Barstool CEO Dave Portnoy reacquired the company for $0 after selling it to Penn National for $500M, noting that “Penn announced today they became the official sports book of ESPN. ESPN gets 117M unique visitors/month vs BarstoolSports get 8M. In terms of search traffic, it's nowhere close. ESPN is Goliath and Barstool is David. This is a huge win for Penn. For Penn, the Barstool Sports acquisition did not help them capture the market as they hoped. In Illinois, Penn has the 7th largest handle of sportsbook with 3.7% of the market. Compare this to Fanduel with 43% and DraftKings at 31%. Not so great. … What makes Barstool loved by their fans, and a good place to promote sports betting, is also what makes them a nightmare for regulation. Compare that to Disney-owned ESPN, who canceled their Barstool partnership after one show due to misaligned values. … Part of the deal is that Barstool has a noncompete with Penn. Before the Penn acquisition, the largest advertising client of Barstool was sportsbooks. Now, no money is coming in from their best profile of clients. Which puts constraints on the business.” Further, Penn will receive 50% of any future sale of Barstool. (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports the ACC is considering adding SMU in addition to Stanford and Cal, noting that “administrators are expected to continue examining the expansion options and will review financial models for both scenarios — adding three or adding just two.” As far as the league’s reasoning for considering the Mustangs, Dellenger notes SMU “resides in one of America’s most populous metro areas, Dallas, and in the heart of a talent-rich football state. Maybe even more important: The university would arrive at a reduced rate. Employing a rich donor base and a healthy desire to advance to the Power Four level, the university is open to forgoing conference distribution pay for their first several years in a new league. SMU officials held similar conversations with Pac-12 administrators.” Dellenger adds: “In expanding, the league must avoid reducing the annual distribution paid to each team to supplement new schools. That is a ‘non-starter,’ several administrators tell Yahoo Sports. A perk of the ESPN contract: The network is required to increase its base distribution to the conference in a way that pays each new member the same annual rate as others — what’s termed as a ‘pro-rata.’” (link)
|
Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde argues the ACC’s interest in Stanford and Cal is not as unreasonable as it may appear on the surface to some: “The ACC, home to plenty of heavyweights academically and in nonrevenue sports, may actually recognize the nonfootball value that associating with Stanford and Cal can add. There certainly are people in the conference who are appalled to see those two institutions adrift. Commissioner Jim Phillips, a career college administrator who last year was mocked as a pollyanna for daring to prioritize issues other than expanding the College Football Playoff, doesn’t see things the same way as businessmen-commissioners Brett Yormark, Tony Petitti and Kevin Warren.” That aside, Forde notes it appears increasingly likely Florida State is ready to challenge the ACC’s GOR, and given the league’s “static media deal,” the “ACC probably needs to shake up its status quo.” Enter Stanford and Cal, whose additions could “provide the elusive mechanism to reopen the ACC’s TV deal with ESPN to add more revenue. How much more? Perhaps not significantly, and thus perhaps not enough to calm conference waters. But if there is any improvement of the bottom line, that might lessen the ardor of malcontents who want to take on the bloody fight of breaking away from the league.” More from Forde. (link)

The Athletic’s Antonio Morales catches up with multiple Pac-12 staffers to get a feel for what it was like to experience the league’s eventual dismantling last week, and one staffer on a team remaining in the Pac-12 says: “Some of our support staff would get in the office, were excited, saved from the brink of death. Then you go back down the roller coaster and it goes the other way around and the Big Ten suddenly wants to engage Washington and Oregon again.” Another staffer whose team is headed to the Big Ten tells Morales: “Our coach came to me and asked me, ‘What do you think of this Apple TV deal?’ I said, ‘We’re done.’ Who is going to sign up for Apple TV to watch Pac-12 football?” Meanwhile, one football AC says he was on the practice field when news came out that his program was headed to the Big 12. His reaction: “S—, (our athletic director) saved us. It makes us relevant again. … I might get a commit from a recruit this weekend just based off the news alone and him wanting to jump in the boat and be one of those guys we build our roster around.” One staff member who is still in the league sums up his experience: “So many failed opportunities. It’s just extremely disappointing. … To have nothing really truly substantial when you had all this time to get something done, make something happen, is just a failure.” (link)

CBS’ Dennis Dodd reports San Diego State’s attempt to create a new league seeking Power 5 status has fallen through. “SDSU President Adela de la Torre was leading a push to assemble what would have amounted to a breakaway of the best schools from the Mountain West and [AAC] along with some combination of Pac-12 leftovers California, Stanford, Oregon State and Washington State, sources said. However, the idea died after Monday night after Mountain West presidents held a call that ended with the leadership showing unity.” One MWC source tells Dodd: "Everything that is out there is from San Diego State. They've been wanting to be part of the Pac-12 forever. They have a hope and dream that they can take the best of us, the best of some other leagues, re-form and keep, honestly, the [College Football Playoff] designation, reap the tens of millions of dollars in distributions and resurrect the Autonomous Five in the West." One industry source adds: “Does it make sense to take the best of the American, remaining Pac and best of the Mountain West and create a new conference that [would] potentially fight for A5 designation? In general, I think it does. I just am not sure what value that would bring from a network standpoint. ESPN and Fox … have already spent their money." (link)

Georgia Tech is getting approval for naming rights deal for its football field, which will be renamed Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who reports the “USG Board of Regents has started the process. Georgia Tech is expected to make more than $70M over the next 20 years. The naming rights is for $55M and sources said the sponsorship piece will push it past $70M.” (link); USG Vice Chancellor for Real Estate & Facilities Sandra Neuse notes: “To be clear, the naming is not for the stadium, but reflects the name change of the field from Grant Field to Hyundai Field. The Athletic Association reserves the right to create a commemorative display inside the stadium to recognize the former name of the Historic Grant Field and the sole discretion to reference that name from time to time.” Neuse also confirms the initial agreement is for a 10-year contract with two five-year renewals. The contract can be terminated in the case of a catastrophic event or any reputational risk. (link)

ESPN is partnering with PENN Entertainment to launch ESPN BET, a branded sportsbook for U.S. fans. PENN Entertainment will rebrand its current sportsbook and relaunch as ESPN BET, effective this fall, in the 16 states where PENN Entertainment is licensed. The rebrand includes the mobile app, website, and mobile website. ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro: “Our primary focus is always to serve sports fans and we know they want both betting content and the ability to place bets with less friction from within our products. The strategy here is simple: to give fans what they’ve been requesting and expecting from ESPN. PENN Entertainment is the perfect partner to build an unmatched user experience for sports betting with ESPN BET.” (link); Under the terms of the agreement, PENN has agreed to make $1.5B in cash payments to ESPN paid over the initial ten-year term and grant ESPN approximately $500M of warrants to purchase approximately 31.8M PENN common shares that will vest ratably over 10 years. Should ESPN Bet meet certain U.S. OSB market share performance thresholds, ESPN could receive bonus warrants to purchase up to an additional approximately 6.4M PENN common shares. Additionally, PENN has sold 100% of the Barstool Sports common stock to Barstool Founder David Portnoy “in exchange for certain non-compete and other restrictive covenants. PENN also has the right to receive 50% of the gross proceeds received by David Portnoy in any subsequent sale or other monetization event of Barstool.” (link)

The Florida State Board of Trustees has approved a $9M budget for the Seminole Boosters to purchase up to two aircraft for athletics and other university-related travel. Board Chair Peter Collins: “We've had a pretty good study going on for a little while now, and there's a lot of other universities — including universities in the state of Florida — that own their own aircraft rather than charter. … Without a private aircraft, it has grown more and more difficult to accomplish the business needs of Florida State University, the Seminole Boosters and Florida State University Athletics.” The first plane being considered is a Cessna Citation CJ2, while the second has yet to be identified, but Collins notes: “We're not buying brand new planes that depreciate by 30-40% when you put them in the air the first time. We're being pretty frugal about it, and there has been a concerted effort and search for the planes.” (link)

Georgia has parted ways with football staffer Victoria Bowles, who was injured in the fatal crash which claimed the lives of former UGA recruiting analyst Chandler LeCroy and student-athlete Devin Willock. Bowles’ attorney Rob Buck says UGA sent Bowles a termination notice for refusing to allow the school to interrogate her or access her personal cell phone and argues her termination is “direct retaliation,” for a lawsuit she filed last month against the Athletic Association. Georgia in a statement explains: “Applicable policies require university employees to cooperate with internal investigations. Over the course of several months, Ms. Bowles was asked — on numerous occasions — to speak with our investigators and provide information, and through her attorney, she repeatedly refused to cooperate. As a result, we were ultimately left with no choice but to terminate her employment.” Buck counters, stating “she had no duty to submit to interrogation,” adding: “The demands to interrogate Tory, and have access to her phone, all relate to UGA’s and the Association’s attempts to avoid liability for the crash and preview or eliminate damaging information.” More from Weiszer. + Fox’s fiscal Q4 earnings came in at $0.74 per share, topping analysts’ target of $0.72 and up from $0.55 YoY. Revenue stayed flat with the 2022 quarter. Deadline’s Dade Hayes adds: “Affiliate fee revenue climbed 3% from a year ago, paced by a 9% upswing in the Television division. Advertising revenue fell 4%, with gains for streaming service Tubi being offset by the absence of political spending at the company’s local stations compared with the midterm cycle of 2022.” (link)
+ Parrot Analytics Director of Strategy/Puck contributor Julia Alexander: “Fox call happening now also talking about ESPN+ pursuing similar routes (strategic partners, maybe equity partnerships w/leagues who have done similar deals in the past, but not with a major broadcaster).
