Realignment Rumblings…
+ Notre Dame is pushing for the ACC to add Stanford and Cal, according to Action Network’s Brett McMurphy and others. McMurphy also reports SMU informed the ACC it would not require any league revenue for the first 5-7 years after joining. One ACC source tells McMurphy: “Notre Dame initiated us bringing on Stanford and Cal and continues to push, yet Notre Dame won’t join the ACC as a full-time member. That doesn’t make any sense to us.” Regarding SMU’s offer, another source says: “That’s a long-term play for them. They think if they can get in a Power 5 conference, then it’s not a bad play thinking 30 years down the road instead of one or two years from now like most universities think. They have the pockets to do it.” Also: “The Mustangs would receive a full ACC share by 2030, a source said. Upon joining, Stanford and Cal would receive a reduced share — about 70% of what the ACC schools currently receive.” (link)
+ Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde cites “multiple sources” who indicate there is “momentum toward” adding Cal and Stanford “but it’s unclear as of now whether the 75% vote threshold (12/15) can be reached. If presidents don’t think they have the numbers, they likely won’t take a formal vote. Ongoing saga.” (link)
+ ESPN’s Pete Thamel: “Sources: ACC Presidents met tonight and the pursuit of Stanford and Cal for conference membership has ‘hit significant roadblocks.’ There’d always been long odds because there wasn’t ever a significant value add. SMU had also been bandied about along with Cal/Stanford, and those conversations aren’t headed anywhere either, per ESPN sources.” (link)
+ Tiger Illustrated’s Larry Williams, who first reported on Notre Dame’s push for Stanford and Cal: “Am told Notre Dame, as a full voting member of the ACC, is pushing hard for the additions of Stanford and Cal. That "full voting member" part is ... something.” (link); Later in the night, Williams tweeted: “Just been told the ACC is not moving forward with expansion. This sounds done.” (link)

Washington State AD Pat Chun during a press conference yesterday described his phone call with Washington AD Jen Cohen after UW left for the Big Ten as "brief," and said emotions need to cool before “a business decision” is made with respect to going forward with the Apple Cup. Chun added that WSU and UW have worked together frequently over the years, but that "the decision by one school within our state negatively impacts the school within the other part of our state." In discussing what led to this moment, Chun notes there is no one proximate cause but rather “a bunch of decisions and failed strategies that put us in this place. And it's unfortunate because the ones who lose out on that are the student-athletes. There's a century of history that has gone by the wayside because this conference has mismanaged itself on a bunch of different levels. And when you have poor leadership, one of the outcomes is failure and that's what has happened to the Pac-12." Also from Chun: “I’m not going to speculate where we end up. Like I said, all options are on the table at this point.” More. (link)

Colorado Considerations…
+ Buffs AD Rick George joins Navigate Founder AJ Maestas to talk realignment & the move to the Big 12, among other topics. George acknowledges the departures of USC and UCLA and losing the Los Angeles market played a role in the Buffs’ decision to join the Big 12 but tells Maestas: “We have always historically had a lot of California students at the University of Colorado. That will not change. When we were in the Big 12 the last time…we still had an influx of students from California. We've also had an incredible amount of students from the state of Texas, so I don't think it changes. As a matter of fact, I think it gets better because the platform that we're going to be on, the excitement around what we're doing at CU, it's going to be very good for our admissions process. We will be out in California just as much as we were from a fundraising and a fan raising strategy.” Full interview. (link)
+ According to Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders’ contract, he is required to provide only a “verbal accounting” of any “athletically related income or benefits” to Buffs AD Rick George and CU President Todd Saliman. Sportico’s Daniel Libit notes that means “there won’t be any written record of how much Sanders earns on the side, and from whom. Though the NCAA’s bylaws do not specify how athletic department employees make their disclosures, many schools have either assumed or established that the information be conveyed in writing.” CU tells Libit: “Coach Prime’s outside income reporting will be in full compliance with NCAA regulations, per the terms of his contract.” Libit goes on to note that “when Sportico sought outside income disclosures for Sanders earlier this year, the school’s office of general counsel stated that no such records existed. It subsequently tried to claim that even if records did exist, they would be part of his personnel file, and exempt from public disclosure.” (link)

Former North Carolina Chancellor Holden Thorp joins the Ovies + Giglio podcast and sheds some light on why Florida State signed the 2012 ACC Grant of Rights (GOR) in the first place despite expressing hesitation. Thorp, who chaired the ACC Council of Presidents at that time, believes the league would’ve been in danger had members not agreed to the GOR, noting the exit fee, as evidenced by Maryland’s departure, was an insufficient deterrent for schools seeking to leave. He goes on to explain that former Florida State President Eric Barron was in favor of signing the GOR, but the board “was in a similar place to where Rick McCullough’s board was now. But they didn’t really have that many other good options at the time, and – I think this is probably still true – Florida didn’t want Florida State in the SEC.” Ultimately, it was former Commissioner John Swofford who convinced FSU to agree to the GOR, but Thorp believes the current FSU Board of Trustees is in a similar position as it was then insofar as it believes “Florida State should have some magic spell to do more. The truth is…they haven't really put a lot on the board to make another conference do a whole lot to get them. So, I don't know what they're going to do. It sounds like they're going to try to raise money to buy out of the grant of rights…but then where are they going to go? The Big Ten’s not going to take them. The SEC won't take them as long as Florida is there, so they could go to the Big 12 if it's that much better than the ACC but, like you said, it's debatable which one of those is better.” More from Thorp. Accordingly, Florida State trustee/former Seminoles QB Drew Weatherford responds to criticism many schools are facing for leaving their respective leagues by arguing that “staying put would have been the much riskier decision. To have not capitalized on the opportunity to join a stronger conference would have been akin to asking coaches and players to fight with one arm behind their backs. Presidents, athletic directors, and Boards of Trustees have a fiduciary responsibility to look out for the best interest of the university they serve, and that is precisely what these university leaders did by deciding to leave the Pac-12 in favor of opportunities that afforded their athletic departments more resources and stability. Simply put, it was a wise business decision.” Given the front porch role many athletic departments play for their universities, Weatherford goes on to observe that realignment’s impact extends beyond the fields and into the classrooms. As such, “athletic programs will and should continue to commercialize and monetize their business and make every effort to attach themselves to a higher-earning conference or risk falling behind the competition. … The days of amateur sports at the Power 5 college level are dead and gone.” (link)

+ Davidson has hired Austin Buntz “in a General Manager type role,” per CBS’ Jon Rothstein, who notes Davidson “becomes the first program in the A10 to go the GM route. Buntz has been working in Davidson’s development office after previously working in Basketball Sports Marketing for Under Armour.” (link)
+ ESPN has promoted analyst Greg McElroy to its No. 2 broadcast team for Saturday Night Primetime, joining Sean McDonough and Molly McGrath. Full slate of new broadcast teams. (link)

Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman observes the league remains largely unscathed in the realignment shuffle due to its focus on basketball: “We’ve got the pieces to stay competitive and relevant nationally in the sport of basketball so [UConn winning the national championship] kind of brought all that to the fore.” St. John’s Men’s Basketball HC Rick Pitino adds support: “We all know that football is the most popular sport in the United States, by far, from TV ratings to everything about it. But it’s refreshing that the Big East is where basketball is still king.” (link)
|
Saint Louis AD Chris May shares his opinion on the transfer portal: “There’s a heavily debated conversation about each sport when it’s appropriate to go into the portal. There has to be some management. This is Chris May’s opinion, but there’s not a lot of data. Kids are transferring, and I believe it’s the right thing ... but not to a point that it’s a total disservice to a program and other athletes on the teams.” May also assesses how the Billikens are approaching realignment and says: “You’re always having the conversation about where this is going and how it’s going to affect the Atlantic 10 and all of college sports. When you’re in the athletic director’s shoes at SLU, you’re cognizant and aware, watching closely the dynamics. We’re positioning this athletic program the best we can while at the same time we think the Atlantic 10 has been great for us.” (link)

Rider President Gregory Dell’Omo at a Zoom meeting last month explained the university’s “financial position, which was challenging before the pandemic, has become dangerously uncertain. We must stabilize our finances.” Dell’Omo went on to outline an “aggressive, comprehensive approach to achieving deficit elimination,” with the goal of a positive operating balance by the 2026 fiscal year. However, Rider professor and Chief Grievance Officer of the school’s AAUP chapter Jeffrey Halpern is calling on the board of trustees to part ways with Dell’Omo. “The president keeps announcing new paths forward. At each iteration, our financial situation becomes worse and worse. He cannot keep denying some responsibility for this. The board needs to take action to rebuild every element of the institution, beginning with staff and faculty morale. His plans effectively are nothing but trying to cut, cut, cut, and we’ve seen the effect of that.” (link)

Worldwide Leader…
+ Disney’s revenue rose 3.8% to $22.3B during Q3 while streaming losses narrowed to $512M from $1.06B YoY. ESPN+ subscriptions remained flat from last quarter at around 25.2M, while Disney+ subscriptions fell by 7.4% to 146.1M. (link, link); Disney CEO Bob Iger reiterated that the company continues to plan for ESPN to transition to direct-to-consumer (DTC) and remarked: “When it comes to partners, we’re looking for partners that are going to help ESPN successfully transition to a DTC model. … Obviously, when you go DTC, you’re kind of doing it on your own—or maybe not. Or maybe there’s an opportunity with another entity to help in that regard. So we’re basically looking quite expansively, [and] I must say that we are extremely encouraged with all the interest that we’ve had already in this regard.” However, there continues to be no rush, as Iger noted that “our total domestic sports advertising revenue per linear and addressable is up 10% versus the prior year, adjusted for comparability, which speaks to the fact that the sports business stands tall and remains a good value proposition. We believe in the power of sports and the unique ability to convene and engage audiences.” More from Iger. (link, link)
+ ESPN will “implement strict lines of demarcation between journalism and sports betting,” per Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy, who adds the “network’s insiders will be kept far away from gambling-focused programs” in light of the network’s new deal with Penn Entertainment. Even if they don’t appear on those programs, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio lays out the following possibility in the event ESPN reporter Adam Schefter, as he often does, gets information before anyone else. “Will Schefter tell Penn National before tweeting it, so that they can adjust the odds as to, for example, a player’s next team or some other proposition driven not by what happens on the field but decisions made by humans? … It’s just one of the various challenges that ESPN will face as it adapts its broader reporting function to its new and highly lucrative relationship with a sports book.” (link, link)

Yesterday's Evening Standard...

Ohio State AD Gene Smith will retire next summer. Smith: “I’ve always believed that a leader seeks to be the right person at the right time in the life of an institution. I just think July of 2024 is the right time to welcome in new leadership to build on what we’ve already achieved.” The Athletic’s Chris Vannini and Nicole Auerbach identifies several candidates to potentially succeed Smith and notes that “UCLA AD Martin Jarmond, Washington State AD Pat Chun and Pittsburgh AD Heather Lyke all previously worked under Smith at Ohio State and have been the AD at multiple schools. Diana Sabau was just hired as Utah State’s AD, but the former deputy commissioner and chief sports officer for the Big Ten also spent several years working under Smith at Ohio State. Elsewhere, Ohio AD Julie Cromer is one of the most respected athletic directors in the country and co-chaired the NCAA Division I Transformation Committee alongside SEC commissioner Greg Sankey.” (link, link)

Saint Peter's AD Rachelle Paul will depart the Peacocks after four years to become the Deputy AD/SWA at Miami (FL). Hurricanes AD Dan Radakovich: “Rachelle is a proven leader and seasoned administrator who will help drive our vision for success as an athletic department.” TurnkeyZRG assisted with Miami’s search. (link)

Stetson AD Jeff Altier will retire at the end of March 2024, concluding his 27 years leading the Hatters, and continue with the university in August as a major gifts officer. President Christopher Roellke: “Jeff Altier's contributions to Stetson and the broader region have been remarkable. A Stetson Hall of Famer, Jeff's work ethic, enthusiasm and Hatter spirit are unmatched. Jeff has been a valued member of my senior leadership team since my arrival at Stetson in 2020. I am personally grateful to Jeff for his insight, his depth of experience, and his drive to enhance intercollegiate athletics and community wellness. He has also been incredibly tolerant of my over-the-top cheering for Stetson student-athletes and teams.” (link)

Texas A&M will discontinue the 12th Man+ Fund following discussions about the IRS memo released in June regarding nonprofit organizations. TAMU: “Following consultation with external advisors, the 12th Man Foundation is altering its approach to NIL which includes discontinuing the 12th Man+ Fund. This decision was made to ensure the 12th Man Foundation meets its high standards for compliance and to protect the organization’s mission. This decision does not prevent the 12th Man Foundation from supporting NIL opportunities for Aggie student-athletes. As part of its altered approach, the organization plans to support NIL opportunities for Aggie student-athletes by expanding its marketing outreach using unrestricted annual fund contributions.” (link); Business of College Sports’ Kristi Dosh: “I'm hearing most of the foundations who had been planning to bring NIL in-house have changed their minds for the same reason.” (link)

Mountain West Machinations…
+ The Mountain West releases a statement on realignment, which in part says it is “exploring all opportunities to strengthen the league, including through the addition of new member schools.” (link)
+ Commissioner Gloria Nevarez is asked if she would be disappointed if the league doesn't add at least one Pac-12 school during this realignment wave and acknowledges it “would feel like a missed opportunity for sure. These are four schools used to receiving $30M a year. We are not in that stratosphere. But I certainly think we could provide an excellent landing place for those in need. … There’s still lots to be learned about a merger. It interests me a lot. But I’m proceeding with eyes wide open and need a lot more information.” Nevarez also says adopting the Pac-12 brand and name are “not off the table. But we have a lot of questions. It is like buying a house. You wouldn’t buy a house without a complete inspection. So, there’s just a lot of questions. They’re the type of questions that I think the Pac-12 or the remaining schools in the Pac-12 need to have time to figure out. Then also questions for us about assets and liabilities and fit and what’s really there. But certainly – absolutely everything’s still on the table.” (link)
+ “It’s all on the table,” one Mountain West AD tells JohnCanzano.com who observes the league’s next steps could include adopting the Pac-12 name, adding Oregon State and Washington State but keeping the Mountain West branding or perhaps something more ambitious. Another “involved party” adds: “It’s like buying a house. [You] need to get an expert to appraise it and tell what’s good and what’s broke.” While some within the league are in favor of retooling and rebranding as the Pac-12, others are decidedly against it. One MWC administrator remarks: “Dissolving comes with risk. Folks get left.” In fact, Canzano points out that “some of the conference’s less valuable brands with few options support [adding WSU and OSU]. They believe it would add value, stability and revenue to the league. Some other MWC members view the chaos caused last Friday in the Pac-12 as a golden opportunity to reshape their membership in a more advantageous way. A couple of additions? A full-blown merger? And does everyone make the cut? After all, the Big Ten and Big 12 seized the moment and fortified themselves.” Another complicating factor in dissolving the league involves the NCAA Men’s Tournament units accrued by San Diego State returning to the institution rather than being spread out among MWC members, and one league AD tells Canzano: “That ain’t happening.” (link)

Washington State President Kirk Schulz says a call between Pac-12 CEOs last week essentially ended as soon as it began when Washington and Oregon announced their intention to join the Big Ten. He tells ESPN’s Pete Thamel: “College athletics is at its worst with this realignment stuff. Everyone is truly looking out for themselves. What it also does is changes behavior, and people stop being honest with each other." Moving forward, Schulz predicts the next two years “would not be pretty,” explaining: “I don't want to minimize it, that this is some budget exercise. You're laying people off. Your best coaches are always on the market. All of a sudden, one of those offers [to a coach that] didn't look so good a year ago [looks different]." While the Cougars’ future conference affiliation remains up in the air, Schulz asserts that “us doing something on the East Coast, unless it's a hell of a lot of money, there's just no way to make it work.” In the event Stanford and Cal remain in the league, Schulz is open to trying to rebuild the Pac-12 but says it’s unclear whether Commissioner Kliavkoff would be involved in that point. More from Schulz. (link)

Northwestern AD Derrick Gragg is “extremely disappointed that a few members of our football program staff decided to wear ‘Cats Against the World’ t-shirts. Neither I nor the university was aware that they owned or would wear these shirts today. The shifts are inappropriate, offensive and tone deaf. Let me be crystal clear: hazing has no place at Northwestern, and we are committed to do whatever is necessary to address hazing-related issues.” (link)

Brand Bank…
+ All Louisiana Tech women’s sports outside of women’s basketball will now compete under the “Bulldogs” nickname. Bulldogs AD Eric Wood: “During my time at LA Tech, I have witnessed a growing urge for our women's sports, outside of women's basketball, to refer to themselves as Bulldogs. After receiving the brand proposal by our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and getting feedback from leaders on campus, benefactors, as well as the head coaches who were all in full support, making this branding change is the right decision for our present and our future. … The Lady Techsters nickname and script logo is a national brand synonymous with our women's basketball program. It is a name and a symbol that honors and recognizes the almost 50-year history that began back in 1973 and has included three national titles and 13 Final Fours. Excluding this from this transition was a no brainer. Lady Techsters will now only belong to them." (link)

Facility Features…
+ San Jose State AD Jeff Konya talks about the newly unveiled Spartan Athletics Center: “We just concluded our most successful athletic season in Spartan history last year, and now we're able to provide our student athletes with 70K square feet of state-of-the-art facility in terms of strength and conditioning and rehab and academics and locker rooms, and for our fans we have several premium spaces that were going to be able to provide to them to cheer on the Spartans to victory.” (link)
+ Toledo announces several enhancements to its gameday experience at the Glass Bowl, including the addition of 600 new chairback seats in mid-field sections. (link)

Dangerous wildfires have prompted evacuations of several communities in Hawaii, including in the historic town of Lahaina, home of the Maui Invitational. Nearly the entire state of Hawaii today was placed under wind advisories or red flag warnings, meaning that conditions were primed for wildfires because of a combination of high temperatures, low humidity and strong winds.
