#5: Baldwin Wallace Dean of the College of Education and Health Sciences Steve Dittmore pens for Extra Points on the institutions and athletic departments that have shuttered in the last few years. Comparing a quartet of DIII institutions that closed, Dittmore observes: “While three of the four campuses were combatting steep losses in student headcount, the percentage of student-athletes on those campuses did not mirror these changes. All four institutions saw their percentage of student-athletes rise during this period and student-athlete headcount did not match enrollment change as the two tables below point out.” Three of four saw an increase in overall athletic spending, adding: “Anecdotally, these results suggest it is not athletes who are contributing to the downward trend of campus enrollment. And, therefore, it is not, perhaps, sports that can save a university on the brink of financial collapse.” More. (link)

#4: Deadspin reports on a complaint alleging racism and unequal treatment that was filed against Brandeis Women’s Basketball HC Carol Simon. The University determined that Simon used “the n-word in full while telling a story involving two Black men,” and that Simon “used her interpretation of what these two Black men sounded like while gesticulating.” The complaining witness tells Deadspin that Simon also “used offensive ‘racist tropes’ to describe Black athletes, including that they were ‘uncoachable’ and ‘too dumb to learn the plays,’” spoke negatively about Black colleagues and peers, and complained about the non-basketball, social justice activities of Black student-athletes. Per the witness, three-quarters of Black team members quit within one year. The school ruled Simon violated University policy with regards to the first incident mentioned, that “The Decision Makers found insufficient evidence to prove all other allegations by a preponderance of the evidence.” (link)
