Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina & NC State are the four reported ACC members who are pushing back on the addition of Stanford & Cal. Twelve of fifteen members must approve the expansion. More from Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde & Richard Johnson: “Sources described ACC members Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech and Louisville as among the most vocal in advocating for the Cardinal and Golden Bears to join the league.” Interestingly, the pair go on to say that the AAC could be an attractive landing spot for the Cardinal & Bears due to “the lack of a grant-of-rights tether. [...] If nothing else, the AAC could be a way station for Cal and Stanford while waiting to see whether the Big Ten reconsiders and expands to 20.” (link)

Oregon State President Jayathi Murthy releases a statement that includes: “We continue to believe that preserving the Pac-12 is in the best interests of OSU student-athletes and the remaining universities, and so we are doing everything in our control to stabilize and rebuild the conference.” More. The Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel shares his thoughts on why Clemson has remained “strong yet quiet” while Florida State has not recently and notes first that Clemson is a charter member of the ACC, which started in 1953 while FSU didn’t join the conference until 1991 “and has no institutional affection for the league. Moreover, the Tigers boast all the components an elite football program needs. Conversely, second-year Seminoles athletic director Michael Alford has said his predecessors did not invest enough in football, an indictment not of the ACC but of FSU’s money management. That’s what makes the Seminoles loud demands for a greater share of conference revenue ring somewhat hollow. None of this means Clemson is content. But the Tigers can afford to be more subtle as they explore options beyond, and perhaps before, the ACC’s grant of media rights expires in tandem with the ESPN deal in 2036.” (link)

ESPN Senior Director of Programming Jeramy Michiaels sits down with Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker to talk all things ACC Network, including what goes into some of the programming, the logistics of taking a live show on the road and how matchups are selected to be featured parts of fall broadcasts. On how the network handles game inventory and the selection process, Michiaels explains: “We start the year and we have a grid that we're working off of. We have an idea of the season is going to play out – the way we think it will, which it never does. We have a pretty good idea of which games will be where, and then we have probably two or three meetings a week with our counterparts in Bristol who handle programming across ABC and all the ESPN nets, and we're moving things around as much as we can. So, it's a lot of mixing and matching. We try to put the best matchups in the best windows, but like I mentioned, there's so much depth in this league that it's really hard to go wrong with the game selections.” Lots more from Michiaels on Connect. Incoming Long Beach State AD Bobby Smitheran held his introductory presser yesterday: “This is personal for me. The Smitheran family has been at Long Beach since 1917. … As a leader, it starts with the people. What has been accomplished at SDSU is about the people, the culture and that’s got to be paramount to who we are. It’s how you pull all the people together. It seems contrived, and it’s easier to say and hard to do. But in speaking to the (LBSU staff) all of those pieces are there for success, and great success. It’s going to take the community as well. That’s philanthropy, facility improvement. In this world we live in with Name Image Likeness, the transfer portal, This is not your grandfather’s college athletics anymore. We have to think forward about how we’re going to do this in a way that attracts student athletes to Long Beach State University. And then create an environment to help them strive for excellence.” (link)

Delaware State unveils a brand refresh, including a new academic logo that connects the school’s “rich history, remarkable present and promising future” and an updated athletics logo about which AD Alecia Shields-Gadson notes: “This new Hornet athletics logo ushers in a new era for all of Delaware State University’s sports teams. It is a work of branding art that reflects all that our intercollegiate teams are striving for – consistent bold and strong performances on the field of play that are packed with an unrelenting sting.” (link)

Cheeseburgers from $8 down to $5, hot dogs from $5 to $3, popcorn from $5 to $2, bottled water from $5 to $2 & bottled soda from $6 to $2. Also notable: “A 16% increase in points of sale designed to provide reduced concession wait times.” (link)
+ Missouri’s new NIL law allows for a high school athlete to start earning NIL dollars once he or she has inked a “written agreement” to attend a university within the state. On3’s Keegan Pope gets this from a source within the recruiting ecosystem: “For some of the top guys on their board they’re right in the conversation or maybe even above some of the big-hitter programs that they’re competing with when it comes to the NIL opportunities if a recruit signs there.” (link)

Iowa Football HC Kirk Ferentz comments on the latest reports out of Iowa City regarding FB student-athletes & sports gambling: “I think the key point there is betting on our games, and that is, to me, it's a deal breaker if that is, in fact, proven to be true. So, we'll deal with that when we get there. But, I think as we move forward, I think, at least in my opinion, it's been a learning process. [...] I would also suggest, based on the number I'm aware of, it's probably a pretty small number in terms of the big scheme of things, but it doesn't make it right and there's no way you can condone that.” (link)

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper is the latest state leader to send a letter to NCAA Governor Charlie Baker on behalf of North Carolina WR Devontez Walker, whose waiver for immediate eligibility after transferring from Kent State was denied by the NCAA. Cooper writes: “During your service as Governor of Massachusetts, I admired your dogged pursuit of commonsense solutions to our thorniest problems. In your current service leading the NCAA, I have great hope that you will be able to bring the same thoughtful and balanced approach to the rapidly evolving world of college sports. I realize this is one of hundreds of decisions you need to make, but nothing could be more important to Tez than this opportunity to get one of the finest university educations in the country at UNC and to compete in front of his family in Carolina Blue.” Cooper adds: “This is the first time I have taken such an action, but this is an unusual and compelling case amidst the backdrop of all the major changes happening in the NCAA.” (link)

The Wall Street Journal’s Melissa Korn, Andrea Fuller and Jennifer Forsyth pen a lengthy exploration of higher ed expenditures and argue that “the nation’s best-known public universities have been on an unfettered spending spree. Over the past two decades, they erected new skylines comprising snazzy academic buildings and dorms. They poured money into big-time sports programs and hired layers of administrators. Then they passed the bill along to students. The University of Kentucky upgraded its campus to the tune of $805K a day for more than a decade. Its freshmen, who come from one of America’s poorest states, paid an average $18,693 to attend in 2021-22. [Penn State] spent so much money that it now has a budget crisis – even though it’s among the most expensive public universities in the U.S. The University of Oklahoma hit students with some of the biggest tuition increases, while spending millions on projects including acquiring and renovating a 32K-square-foot Italian monastery for its study-abroad program.” They go on to note that median enrollment among the 50 state flagship universities increased by 21% from 2002-22 while spending increased by 38% and that “for every $1 lost in state support at those universities over the two decades, the median school increased tuition and fee revenue by nearly $2.40, more than covering the cuts.” Lots more. The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner works to parse who is in charge of the Pac-12 as the future for the four remaining institutions remains unclear. Commissioner George Kliavkoff is “still our commissioner, and there have been no discussions with him besides him intending to still serve,” per Washington State President and Pac-12 Board of Directors Chair Kirk Schulz, who did not have an answer on if Kliavkoff would lead any media rights negotiations given the continuing uncertainty. As far as who controls the voting power and conference assets, it is unclear who has a say, with Wilner noting there has been no confirmation by lawyers that the four remaining schools retain control. Schulz adds: “We have to figure out how to operate the conference and who is empowered with the decision-making. It turns out that’s not as trivial as everybody thinks. […] It’s an unprecedented situation where we lose five of the nine schools. There are decisions to make on all types of things, but right now we’re in a holding pattern … We thought, ‘Let’s step back and make sure who has the authority.’ We think there will be some clarity around governance issues in the next two weeks.” (link)
|
Wilner also teams up with an anonymous sports media expert to estimate the possible valuation for the future of the Pac-12 given the assumptions of a six-year deal with a three percent annual escalator, an eight-game football conference schedule and 18-game conference hoops schedule with 37% of FB and 49% of MBB contests on linear, no College Football Playoff or NCAA Tournament revenue and no use of the current net assets. The three scenarios produce equal payouts of $8.4M by merging with the Mountain West, $10.5M by adding San Diego State, Fresno State, Colorado State, SMU, Rice and Tulane and $10.9M per school by adding those same schools in scenario two but swapping Rice for Boise State. All in all, this could add up to $20M annually given postseason payouts and NCAA Tournament units, which surpasses the American and Mountain West payouts of approximately $7.5M and $4.75M per school, respectively. The so-called Pac-4 has tapped former NCAA EVP for Regulatory Affairs Oliver Luck as a consultant, per JohnCanzano.com’s namesake, who notes his ability to save the league is a “long shot, but I sure feel better about the conference’s chance to survive with him around.” Canzano continues: “The Pac-4 members may attempt to keep an imbalanced share of conference revenue in the next year. The conference expects to receive $420M in television and postseason funds. There’s also an ‘emergency fund’ that had more than $40M in it before the pandemic hit in 2020. How much is left in the fund? Could the Pac-4 justify the use of revenue to pay San Diego State’s $34M MWC buyout? How about SMU? Also, is there a media-rights deal out there for a reconstructed conference? … Meanwhile, I reached out to an executive at one of the four remaining schools with a follow-up question: Am I being naive to think rebuilding the Pac-4 is a viable option? The answer: ‘No you are not.’” (link)
|
Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger gets this from a source who knows what’s going on with the four remaining Pac-12 members: “It’s premature to say the conference is dead.” Dellenger also identifies a key point: “The NCAA requires eight members to be recognized as an FBS conference, though there is a grace period of two years. According to NCAA bylaw 20.02.9.2, a conference shall continue to be considered an FBS league for two years after it drops below the eight-team threshold.” More. (link)

Wake Forest AD John Currie notes that since August 1, 2019, “Wake Forest has been the fastest growing and hottest brand in the Power 5 (and the ACC), with a 115% growth in our fanbase during this span. Across the nation, over 2.7M people now identify as Wake Forest fans, which ranks ninth in the league and ahead of Virginia Tech and just trailing NC State. The Demon Deacons are an ascending brand with a fan base that over-indexes on key elements including diversity, education, affluence, and influence in their place of business according to international market data firm YouGov. In fact, approximately 40% of our nearly 3M fans belong to a minority group.” (link)

Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz sits down with San Jose State AD Jeff Konya, Spartans gymnastics student-athlete Jada Mazury and Pondera Co-Founder Rob Elliott to talk about SDSU’s use of the Pondera Virtual Advisor, an organizational assessment that seeks to increase effectiveness and develop high-performing teams by measuring four indicators of personality and behavior. Konya says the Virtual Advisor has “introduced a whole new vocabulary, so everybody kind of references certain things about the assessment and how they categorize certain personality types or some distinguishing features within the personality type. So, it shortcuts a conversation so that people can understand how people are thinking really quickly and say, ‘Oh you’re coming at this issue as a pragmatist or you're coming at this issue like a strategist. … It’s certainly been additive because people are more comfortable now being open about their personality and that's really important.” Mazury adds the assessment helps teach student-athletes “more than you know about how you work, how you're wired, how you run and I think it honestly could enhance your athletic abilities, your abilities in the classroom, communication and just your overall life knowing how you kind of run and how you work.” Full Q&A on Connect. More than 2,400 FBS scholarship players have entered the transfer portal over the past year, according to The Athletic’s Max Olson, who adds: “When you take out the players who withdrew from the portal, went pro or retired from football, the final total for the 2022-23 cycle was 2,303 FBS scholarship transfers,” an 18% YoY increase. “More importantly, that record-breaking total means more than 20% of all FBS scholarship players have transferred in the past year.” So far, 83% of FBS scholarship transfers have landed at new schools, which is roughly in line with last year’s total. Among the transfer signees, more than 70% (1,365) were able to stay at the FBS level, and Olson notes: “If you’re curious what percentage of these transfers are moving down a level for the upcoming season, the total came out to almost exactly 50%.” Meanwhile, 1,187 scholarship transfers left programs that were in the Power 5 last season, a 13% increase YoY. 89% of these transfers have been able to find new schools. Another stat from Olson: 98 FBS scholarship QBs transferred to other FBS programs, and “half of them might end up earning starting jobs this fall. That’s really not an exaggeration.” As of now, there are 392 FBS scholarship players in the portal who remain uncommitted. More from Olson. (link)

+ Southern Illinois stacked over $3M in development dollars for the first time since 2011. Comparatives: “Fundraising was up 5.2 percent over FY22, and 18.9 percent versus FY21.” There’s more green for the Salukis with “a massive 126 percent increase in single-game ticket revenue in men's basketball, including three of the highest-grossing games in the last 15 years — the New Year's Day Saluki Bash versus Belmont, the Missouri State game on Feb. 5, and the Mardi Gras promotion versus Bradley on Feb. 19. Women's basketball also drew one of its largest crowds, more than 4,000, for the Dec. 7 game versus Tennessee State.” (link)

Facility Files…
+ Connecticut’s renovations to turn Freitas Ice Forum in the Huskies’ dedicated Volleyball facility were completed last week, with AD David Benedict adding that phase two upgrades of a video board and permanent bleachers will be complete for next season. Benedict adding: “We didn’t have enough lead time to get these things done prior to this season. Lots of other little things that will happen over the course of time. We had a relatively short window to get all of this done prior to the beginning of this year’s season.” (link)
+ PNC Arena, home of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes and NC State Men’s Basketball, is set to receive $300M in tourism tax dollars as part of recommendations for the next 22 years of spending in Raleigh. Upgrades could begin as early as next summer, with the Centennial Authority committing to renovate the Wolfpack’s locker room as well. (link)
