UCLA AD Martin Jarmond joins the Bruin Report’s Brocast to discuss the latest in realignment and his name being mentioned for other open AD jobs. On the latter topic, Jarmond: “I don't respond to every rumor because I'd be wasting too much time doing that. By the way, don't believe everything you read or you hear. … I can tell you that I haven't interviewed anywhere. I'm happy here. I love being a Bruin.” Asked about what the additional Big Ten revenue can do for the department, Jarmond responds: “You talk about nutrition, you talk about traveling, you talk about academic support, you talk about just everything that impacts that student-athlete experience – mental health – there are things that we have not been able to do for our athletic program and for our student-athletes, quite frankly, that we should be doing and now we're going to have the ability to do. Next year, we're going to feed all of our teams a meal for the first time, all of our Olympic sports. We haven't been able to do that because that costs a couple million dollars.” More from Jarmond. More from Oregon State AD Barnes on what’s next for the Beavers and the Pac-12, and he asserts to JohnCanzano.com’s namesake that OSU would not have left if it were Oregon’s or Washington’s shoes. “No. We could have made it work. … Oh, by the way, we got better, not worse when Colorado left. We had a chance to add a member (San Diego State) that would have made us better.” Barnes goes on to say OSU and Washington State are “joined at the hip” in conversations with Cal. Meanwhile, Canzano notes the Mountain West and ACC are “jockeying behind the scenes, positioning themselves should the opportunity present itself” to add OSU and WSU, but adds that “Barnes didn’t sound like an administrator ready to willingly accept relegation on Wednesday.” To that point, Barnes remarks: “We found a way forward. We will find a way forward again.” (link)

Former President George W. Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice have mounted a campaign to encourage the ACC to consider admitting SMU, Stanford and Cal. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger also cites Stanford’s $36.3B endowment and notes: “Could it afford to enter a conference for free and forgo any league distribution? Sure. Will it? In conversations with Big Ten and ACC officials, that prospect has been discussed. Such a move would change the calculus in the single most important piece of the ACC’s expansion decision: money.” With SMU having reportedly offered to join without participating in revenue distribution for the next five to seven years, the ACC could effectively add three schools for the price of one (Cal). Dellenger calculates a minimum of $60M new dollars would come into the league via the pro-rata clause in the ACC’s ESPN contract. (link)

The Athletic’s Kyle Tucker and Dana O’Neil catch up with several men's basketball head coaches to hear their thoughts on realignment, and several agree that it doesn’t make sense to make such drastic changes in all sports to accommodate for football. Former Syracuse HC Jim Boeheim: “Oh, my God, these people. A few years ago, someone said, ‘Let’s get the (university) presidents more involved.’ This is where we are. This is about money. We all know that. But they used to make $10M, then 20, then 30. Every time, they spent it all. Now it’s 50, then 100. It doesn’t matter. We keep moving the line and they spend it anyway. Where does it stop? It makes no sense for intelligent people to be doing this. The logistics for football aren’t so bad, but basketball? The other sports? What are they doing about a conference tournament? They haven’t solved any of the problems of college athletics. If anything, they just keep making them worse.” Meanwhile, former Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby notes: “Football would say, ‘If we’re a separate entity, why the hell should we have to pony up to keep everybody else alive?’ You’d devastate sports as we know it around the country. The only way for any of that to be funded on campuses is by football revenue, television and (College Football) Playoff money. It’s socialism in capital letters and always has been.” More. (link)

Wichita State AD Kevin Saal says the Shockers are staying on top of the latest realignment news but adds: “First and foremost, we’re in the right place. We have a commissioner in commissioner (Mike) Aresco who is bold and aggressive and has proven that. He’s got great relationships with TV partners and he’s included all of the current AAC membership in all of those discussions and kept us updated and informed. The conference office staff has been first class and they’ve handled things really, really well.” Whatever happens, Saal is confident the Shockers will be prepared and says that overall, it’s “difficult to predict where [realignment is] going to go. I think if you were to ask the Pac-12 membership two weeks ago, they would have felt pretty solid with where they were. Things can change in a matter of 24 hours.” (link)

ECU AD Jon Gilbert says the Pirates have sold around 14,500 football season tickets so far, and he would like to raise that figure to 15K, which would “be a really good number in our league.” On the facilities front, Gilbert notes ECU has raised $15M so far for the indoor football practice facility, with the goal of raising $20M by December. The facility is estimated to cost around $22-25M, and construction would not begin until that figure is raised. As for the new baseball practice building, $4.4M of the needed $7M has been raised. North Texas AD Jared Mosley talks about the Mean Green Live concert series that was announced last month as well as the department’s overall engagement plan and tells On3’s Andy Wittry that “the easiest fans to recruit are the students that come here as freshmen and hopefully you create an experience that creates a fan from day one that when they leave here, they want to come back and relive the good old days. … If you’re an alum, I want people to be proud that their alma mater and their school that is at the top of their diploma, that they’ve got a sense of pride in how we do things. And that we’re doing things to a level that creates a memorable experience.” UNT is also working with its student housing and Greek Life organizations to create unique experiences for students, and Mosley notes: “We can try something and if it fails, we can scrap it and try something new next week. I’ve encouraged our marketing staff to be creative and not afraid to go out and test some new things.” Mosley also tells Wittry the “blueprint really for us going into The American is how quickly can we take our revenue and get to the top third of the American Athletic Conference? Because we feel that that equation that worked for us elevating through Conference USA, it’s going to be similar in The American.” (link)

A joint survey by Sportico and The Harris Poll found that 25% of U.S. adults strongly agree and 42% somewhat agree that student-athletes should be able to receive direct compensation from their school, while 64% support athletes’ rights to obtain employee status and 59% think they should collectively bargain as a labor union. Americans' stance on supporting profitable NIL deals rose from 62% in November 2020 to 74% in last week’s poll. Further, 60% of the fans in 2020 believed NIL would change their enjoyment of college sports but now that number is just 25%. Notably, 80% of Americans support uniform NIL standards across college sports. More. (link)

SWAC Commissioner Charles McClelland and MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills talk with HBCU Legends’ Mason Smith about strengthening their leagues’ ties to Atlanta, and McClelland says of hosting this year’s baseball tournament: "Being in midtown Atlanta was an excitement that I haven't felt in quite some time. The city of Atlanta truly embraced the tournament. We had the largest total attendance that we've had at a baseball tournament. There were fans there starting Wednesday all the way through the championship game that Sunday. … We want to be in Atlanta, and the city of Atlanta wants SWAC there. Baseball was kind of that first step, and we'll continue working with the leadership there to see what synergies we can put together.” Stills adds: “We love being in Atlanta for the Celebration Bowl, and the MEAC/SWAC Challenge. Atlanta has the largest alumni base that we have. I just went to their MEAC picnic that's been going on for 27 years. So going there and seeing that felt like home, a homecoming atmosphere.” (link)

Northwestern Football Interim HC David Braun is taking a “very calculated” approach to team bonding activities during camp and says: "We've had an opportunity to go through extensive education when it comes to hazing, as a team and as a staff. That education will continue. We're being very mindful of making sure that we find ways to allow this team to build and become cohesive and have fun in team meetings with music, making sure that this isn't an environment where it's just business. This team needs to come together. … I certainly hope that this community, our alumni, all those that are associated with Northwestern University and Northwestern athletics, will come out and show full support for 103 young men that have worked their butts off over the course of the last four weeks and have come together to do something really special. I'm really confident that that's exactly what's going to happen." (link)

INFLCR Founder and CEO Jim Cavale will step down as CEO and Chief Innovation Officer for Teamworks, while remaining an advisor and shareholder for the parent company. INFLCR Assoc. GM Sean Kelly will step in to succeed Cavale. Teamworks CEO Zach Maurides: "Jim has really worked hard to develop, in Sean Kelly, a successor that is not just going to carry INFLCR forward from where it is today, but I think Sean has really crafted a vision for where INFLCR needs to go over the next ten years. What's exciting is now he's got a chance to execute that and really carry forward the legacy of what Jim has established here at Teamworks. [...] I'll leave it to him as to how he wants to unveil what he's doing next, but suffice it to say that I think it's going to be incredibly impactful. I think he's going to bring the same passion and drive he has brought to everything in his life and I think at the end of the day he's probably going to transform the industry again because that's just what he does." Oregon State AD Scott Barnes tells The Oregonian’s Nick Daschel that OSU is committed to rebuilding the Pac-12: “Nothing’s easy, given the circumstances, but I think it’s our best path forward. … “Will it be perfect and will it be the same? No. But the opportunity to build back and keep originality in play to a degree is important. With less choices, you have less of a path to stay completely on the West Coast.” As far as a timeline for hopefully getting Stanford and Cal on board, Barnes says: “We can’t wait a month. I’m hopeful that it’s days.” Without identifying specific schools, Barnes says he sees eight to 10 teams to start with and envisions the schools would use the Pac-12’s assets, such as existing media rights, emergency fund, NCAA Tournament units and the Pac-12 Network to “attract high-caliber programs to build this back.” Of particular note, Barnes says Commissioner George Kliavkoff “has not been involved in our conversations” and says of Kliavkoff’s future: “That will be a presidential decision in terms of what happens there.” (link)

Arizona State President Michael Crow remarked on Friday that “we had what I thought was a great offer from Apple. Most of the fan base didn’t think it was a great deal but I don’t think they knew that much about it.” Crow believed the Pac-12 would receive more than the base amount with increased subscription numbers, similar to how MLS’ deal with Apple has played out. “So basically what the Apple deal was is Apple would spend $500M the first year to take all of the football games, all the men’s basketball games, all the women’s basketball games, digitally capture them and make them available to everyone. You could play the games whenever you wanted to play them. That’s a huge, huge, huge thing. All of the data from those games would be available. You could zoom in on…the player, you could zoom in on great plays. You could be watching all the games at the same time if you wanted. There was going to be a fee for that (subscription) — and that was the big uncertainty — and then a guarantee of a certain income to the schools. And then a joint partnership going forward of anything above the guarantee would be a 50-50 split. … Most of us thought that was a pretty good deal, including me. Along the way, others didn’t think that was a good deal. At the last second, the Big Ten, working I would guess with their media groups (Fox, CBS and NBC), picked off two teams.” (link)

The Los Angeles Times’ J. Brady McCollough shares a behind-the-scenes look at the Pac-12’s downfall and reports that while many news items regarding the University of California Board of Regents’ attempts to keep UCLA from leaving without Cal were presented as posturing, Commissioner Kliavkoff was, in fact, “deeply engaged with a small group of regents about the framework of a deal that would lead to the regents voting to block UCLA’s move — even though the regents did not want to set a precedent of overturning a monumental campus-specific decision.” Regents informed Kliavkoff that if he could guarantee the Bruins $52M annually during the five years of the league’s next media deal, they would vote in favor of UCLA staying in the Pac-12. Not only was Kliavkoff charged with selling the rest of the league on the guaranteed money for UCLA without knowing what the next media rights deal entailed, the league would have also been on the hook for the $15M UCLA would’ve owed the Big Ten for breaking the agreement. Per McCollough, former Oregon Interim President Patrick Phililps “vehemently” shut that discussion down. When talk about expanding to include the remaining Big 12 teams following the departures of Texas and Oklahoma came up, McCollough reports USC President Carol Folt voiced opposition three slides into a 12-slide presentation. One source tells McCollough: “A lot of times, the way presidents’ rooms work, he or she who speaks the loudest and first kind of sets the dynamic. And if there’s nobody else that has a real strong knowledge base or inclination to do something else, they say the person who has a real strong opinion must feel strongly for a reason.” Lots more throughout the entire timeline. With the realignment volcano temporarily dormant, Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde reports that North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham is the “key administrator among the four [ACC schools of UNC, NC State, Clemson and Florida State] who are opposed to adding the Bay Area schools.” One source tells Forde: “He’s the loose block in the Jenga tower.” In response, Forde notes that members of the USOPC have reached out to Cunningham to voice their concerns “about what the diminishment of Stanford and Cal’s athletic programs would mean to the American Olympic team. Stanford has produced the most American Olympics of any university, and Cal has produced the fourth-most. Cunningham is a member of the USOPC board and oversees a powerhouse program of his own in the Olympic sports.” (link)

Former Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren tells NBC Sports’ Peter King the “business of college sports evolved much quicker than the operations and legislation of college sports” and also notes a potential new domed stadium in Chicago would pursue hosting Final Four/College Football Playoff. (link)

Montana AD Kent Haslam and Montana State AD Leon Costello share their perspectives on hazing and how their respective universities approach the issue. Haslam notes hazing is addressed under the student code of conduct for the entire campus and is “something that is 100% forbidden and not tolerated. We definitely spend our time educating our student-athletes, but hazing really is addressed as a campus-wide issue that can manifest itself in a variety of different groups or organizations and athletics is no different.” Haslam continues: “I think you’ve got to be careful about not letting things progress until they become sexualized or discriminatory or harassing or demeaning.” Costello points to the importance of RealResponse as a resource for student-athletes and notes the Bobcats send out a weekly email to student-athletes asking how things are going. “It’s an opportunity for student athletes to send us a note and it comes back to us completely confidential and anonymous. We have no idea who’s sending it, but it's an opportunity for them to tell us what's going on within their department. … I think that gives student-athletes some power to really let us know what's going on.” Full podcast. Memphis has sold more than 11K football season tickets, and Tigers Deputy AD Jeff Crane says: “We’d like to sell another 1,000 to 1,200 before kickoff in a couple weeks. Traditionally, we’ve seen those ticket sales trend upward in the last couple weeks before the start of the season.” Crane acknowledges the Tigers would like to see more season tickets sold but points out single-game tickets are selling at a “much higher rate over the last couple of years” than season tickets. Crane on updates to Liberty Stadium: “We’ve finished the schematic design phase. And now we’re moving into the final design that we expect to have later this fall and be in position to start construction immediately following the (2023) season.” (link)

College Sports Communicators Second Vice President Mary Beth Challoner and CSC College Division Representative Donnie Smith join Fox Sports/Connect’s Bryan Fischer from the 2023 NACDA Convention to discuss how the industry has changed, ways CSC is adapting, overcoming common challenges at their respective leadership levels and more. When conveying the importance of communications professionals’ roles to athletics departments and university leadership, Challoner says it’s important to note that “you are the pulse of our sports department. You know the coaches, you know the student-athletes, you know the history, you kind of know all the nooks and crannies and all the nuances of this program.” Challoner also notes the pandemic highlighted the importance of communications professionals “because there were a lot of messages. It was no longer just about teams and athletes…and I think a lot of people within the college campuses really looked to their communications professionals for that guidance and how to deliver the message.” Check out the full conversation on Connect. LifeWallet CEO/prominent Miami (FL) supporter John Ruiz is the subject of lawsuit filed by Cano Health, which argues LifeWallet owes the healthcare provider $67M. Cano, which itself is struggling and is also the subject of a LifeWallet suit, per the Miami Herald’s Ben Wieder and Jay Weaver, alleges LifeWallet “is a sham and effectively a Ponzi scheme” that has made “misrepresentations” in contract agreements between the two companies. Cano also argues that LifeWallet has used the value of health insurance claims it obtained from Cano and other companies to “prop up an absurdly over-inflated valuation.” In its lawsuit against Cano, LifeWallet argued that the dispute should be handled through mediation or arbitration, as it said the companies had earlier agreed.
