Knight Commission CEO Amy Privette Perko reissues the commission’s call to separate football from other college sports. Perko notes these “football-driven realignments create substantial challenges for basketball and Olympic sport athletes, who will spend much more time traveling and will miss many more classes with cross-country conference competition than football players. The Knight Commission believes our December 2020 proposal for an overhauled structure will be better for athletes in all sports and improve governance. Our proposal calls for the creation of a new governing structure solely for the sport of FBS football, with the NCAA continuing to govern all other sports.” Further, Perko points out the Knight Commission’s structure passes muster with Title IX and antitrust laws and adds: “If university presidents want to continue pretending FBS football is just like other NCAA Division I sports, then the CFP meeting on August 30 to determine future revenue distributions of more than $1 billion dollars should be its last—and these decisions should be made by NCAA governance. The alternative is to have FBS football be governed by its own entity.” (link)

Iowa Interim AD Beth Goetz met with the media for the first time in her new role and acknowledged the critical juncture at which the industry has arrived. “College athletics needs to evolve, and what that means for how we share resources with student-athletes and what the actual pathway is for that to happen remains to be seen. … Student-athletes not being paid is not the only thing distinctive about college athletics, between that and pro sports. It’s incumbent upon those of us that get to work and manage and lead in that space to make sure they are getting an education, that we’re preparing them for what’s next.” Regarding her approach to hiring coaches, Goetz noted that fit matters. “I personally don’t believe that every coach can be equally successful at each place. … It’s really important that you sort of define, here are our top five priorities in this sport for the person that’s going to lead the program going forward, and then you start the search process from there to make sure that you are looking at candidates that are going to hit all those marks.” Goetz also addressed the gambling investigation and said: “On the reinstatement process specifically, we have submitted all the requested information to date to the NCAA, and we’re optimistic that we are just hopefully days away from getting some feedback at least initially on what that means for our student-athletes who currently are here and have remaining eligibility.” More from Goetz. Prairie View A&M AD Anton Goff’s four-year contract includes a base salary of $230K, per CollegeAD. Goff will also be eligible for bonuses if the department’s APR score is 950 or higher ($10K), the GSR is 90% or better ($10K), he can help the department raise over $1M annually ($10K), and athletic bonuses ranging from $2,500 to $20K. Should PVAMU part ways with Goff without cause, Goff would be owed the remainder of his base salary for the duration of the contract. If Goff terminates the deal, he owes 50% of his base salary. That figure increases to 100% if he leaves for another conference school. (link)

Elevate Marketplace has released secondary ticketing trends for the 2023 college football season. According to Elevate, college football fans are purchasing earlier compared to 2022 and are spending more per ticket with the average sales price up 12% YoY. The five most in-demand games this season all have get-in ticket prices over $250, led by the $610 get-in price for Ohio State-Notre Dame. Meanwhile, StubHub continues to be the leader in total secondary market ticket sales across DI; however, its market share has decreased by 25% since 2019. Additionally, Vividseats has experienced an 8% decrease while SeatGeek (+21%) and Ticketmaster (+16%) have increased their secondary ticket market share YoY since 2019. Elevate Marketplace Chief Business Officer Jonathan Marks: “The continued acceleration in average sales prices, along with higher ‘get-in’ prices for marquee college football games on the secondary ticket market, is a true testament to continued fan interest across college football, and particularly marquee games.” (link)

Northwestern President Michael Schill explains why the Wildcats are pushing forward with renovations to Ryan Field, writing in a letter to the campus community: “The redevelopment of Ryan Field is a generational decision that is tied directly to our commitment as a founding member of the Big Ten, and our commitment to our student-athletes. The rapidly decaying condition of Ryan Field will require a major investment by the University in any case. The Ryan family’s generosity enables us to leverage private philanthropy to build a world-class athletic facility for our varsity sports that will be a year-round asset to the Northwestern and Evanston communities.” Regarding the project itself, Schill notes the university is willing to modify its zoning proposal to “reduce the maximum number of concerts to six per year and make additional changes to the proposed usage and capacity of the plazas.” He concludes: “I recognize that we are facing significant challenges that go beyond the new stadium. Those challenges require extraordinary care, time and healing. I firmly believe this rebuild will help us create an opportunity to build toward a positive and exciting future where we do what we do best at Northwestern — bring people together and positively impact communities.” (link)

By and large, football recruiting staffers are displeased with the DI Council’s decision to allow coaches to begin contacting recruits on June 15 following the prospect’s sophomore year. During one discussion at the recent Personnel and Recruiting Symposium, staffers were asked to raise their hands if they were in favor of the June 15 change, and The Athletic’s Grace Raynor notes that no one in the room of 100+ people raised their hand. “A consistent message from recruiting and personnel staffers: The wrong people are making the rules changes. Decisions about the recruiting calendar and/or any changes made to the model are first recommended by the Football Oversight Committee to members of the Division I Council, which then takes a vote. The Football Oversight Committee has just two head coaches on it — Chattanooga’s Rusty Wright and Florida International’s Mike MacIntyre — who aren’t always available to attend meetings. The Division I Council has zero football coaches or support staffers on it. It’s largely made up of athletic directors, commissioners and even a few professors.” (link)

Oregon State AD Scott Barnes shares more with The Athletic’s Brian Hamilton about what led to the Pac-12 exodus and says: “When you’re in a leadership position, and you report to a board, and you report to others, you need to understand on a daily basis how people are feeling and what they’re feeling. And sometimes you have to be strategic enough to pull that out of folks. Because sometimes that information doesn’t come readily. I don’t think Pac-12 leadership was in touch with how folks felt. … Ultimately, you need to be in tune with your members and understand the landscape very, very well. To do that, you need to be out in front of it and you need to be connected to media partners, to your board, to others, to really understand and know, at a personal level, where things sit. And I don’t think that work got done, in my opinion.” Asked about OSU’s immediate next steps, Barnes says: “I’ll put it this way – it’s thinking through the governance structure of the NCAA and the Pac-12, understanding our rights assets we hold very soon, securing a media consultant to assist in navigating that landscape. And, at the same time, simultaneously thinking about continuing to discuss potential expansion partners.” (link)

ESPN President of Content Burke Magnus Q&As with The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch on a number of topics, including how aggressive ESPN will be in its pursuit of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. Key takeaways…
+ Magnus: “Oh, I think we’ll be very aggressive. You know how much pride we’ve taken in that sport and that tournament for many years. … We call it our tournament. We don’t have the men’s tournament. We haven’t had that in any way, shape or form for many years. We love it. We’re thrilled that it’s succeeding. We know it’ll be competitive, but we hope very much to keep it.”
+ Magnus says ESPN will also “aggressively” pursue the rights for the upcoming College Football Playoff package. “College football is something that’s foundational to what we do here, not just from a live-event perspective, but coverage in general. We believe that the CFP and the commissioners did a really thoughtful job on the expansion plan, which we think will put that sport in an even stronger position in the future with a bracketed playoff.”
+ On whether one company could realistically secure the rights to the entire CFP when it expands: “I think it’s certainly possible it could be one. It’s only going from seven games to 11 games in total. That’s not that big to begin with. If it were to be shared, I personally feel like it couldn’t or maybe rather shouldn’t be shared beyond two.”
+ On the narrative that ESPN and Fox are to blame for realignment: “We fought the perception that we were somehow behind the scenes on a lot of this stuff, which we knew to be untrue, but it was kind of a pointless battle to try and push back or protest too much in that regard. … What we are always asked to do is not to design, but rather to react to changes that are made.” Lots more from Magnus in a wide-ranging interview. The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach and Seth Emerson observe the relationship between the SEC and Big Ten has become more cordial – or, at least, less non-cordial – in recent months, in part due to Big Ten ADs encouraging Commissioner Tony Petitti to reach out to SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. Ohio Smith AD Gene Smith says he has a “great relationship” with Sankey and notes that “at the end of the day, they’re two great leaders in our industry, and we’re all facing the same issues.” Sankey tells Auerbach and Emerson the “SEC and Big Ten relationship is more important now than ever, with all that’s changing. … I really appreciate [Petitti’s] outreach. I think he’s appreciated my outreach. I want to continue that dialogue. I think that we can collaborate in an effective way. We’re not always going to agree. Do they want to win games against us? Absolutely. Do we want to win games against them? Absolutely. But that doesn’t diminish our ability to work together in an effective way.” More. (link)

Michigan State Assoc. AD for Strategic Initiatives & Conference Planning Kevin Pauga’s scheduling algorithm, Faktor, “could be a potential solution to the now ever-growing scheduling conundrums presented by conference realignment,” Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich suggests. Pauga describes Faktor as “Tinder meets Turbo Tax for scheduling.” Currently, Faktor has been used in seven of the 10 FBS conference football schedules for this season. Christovich on how Faktor works: “Pauga collects input, data, and opinions from athletic directors, coaches and administrators from around the conference. He looks at everything from TV windows and competitive balance to travel times and class schedules. Schools will also provide information on what kind of door-to-door travel accommodations they can afford, like charter or commercial flights.” More. (link)

La Salle officially welcomed new AD Ashwin Puri in an introductory press conference yesterday, during which Puri remarked: “Under the direction of a visionary leadership group, led by President Allen, we bring a growth mindset to La Salle by building off of its values and the foundation that has been in place for decades. No matter if it’s growth within our facilities or growth within our athletes, together we can thrive to truly achieve the promise of a top-notch education and transformational experience for our students.” Puri also explained he plans to prioritize four areas: modernizing facilities; fostering a culture of collaboration and compliance; creating financial sustainability; and winning in the classroom, competition, and community. President Dan Allen noted in his remarks that Puri “importantly has an in-depth understanding of the Philly region and our athletics landscape, which we believe will be a cornerstone to his success.” (link)

SMU AD Rick Hart responds to TCU’s announcement it would press pause on the football rivalry: “It’s disappointing for our student-athletes, our alumni and our fanbase. It’s disappointing for Metroplex football fans. This is a rivalry that has spanned a century-plus. It is the Battle for the Iron Skillet, Dallas versus Ft. Worth, Doak Walker versus Sammy Baugh, the Pony Express versus LaDainian Tomlinson, and more. It’s the game Grantland Rice, the famous sportswriter, called the ‘Game of the Century’ in 1935. It is part of the very fabric of college football. Our hope is that TCU will resume the series, as we at SMU want to continue this rivalry in perpetuity.” (link)

The university envisions a “lively mixed-use development with the goals of stimulating economic activity and reinforcing Winston-Salem’s position as a leading tourism, sports, and entertainment destination.” Demon Deacons AD John Currie: “There is enormous potential for investment in this area which would not only bolster our goal of providing the Best Fan Experience in North Carolina, but also create year-round opportunities to gather and build community. Coming off an incredible year…the time is right to collectively create the most exciting live-work-play development in northwest North Carolina, which in turn will help attract even more major event opportunities.” (link)

More than 1,000 former Northwestern student-athletes have penned an open letter condemning hazing but defending the Wildcats’ athletic culture. The letter reads, in part: "The allegations being made are troubling and we support the University's efforts to fully investigate these claims. However, these allegations do not represent or define the overall athletics culture at Northwestern. … The opportunity to compete at this level in both the classroom and in our respective sports is unique and deeply valued. These experiences were the building blocks for each of our lives after graduation. This is the Northwestern we proudly came to know and appreciate, and for which we are immensely grateful. We strongly affirm the positive experiences we had at Northwestern and, if offered, would do it all over again." (link)
