The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner cites Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff’s buyout, which he estimates to be around $10M, one major argument in keeping him on board, but he also notes the “conference needs someone to handle day-to-day operations for the upcoming competition year. If they have to pay him anyhow, why not let Kliavkoff oversee operations?” However, Wilner goes on to posit that any “serious rebuild of the conference — the next move depends on the Bay Area schools — assuredly would take place under different leadership.” Asked to assign a grade to Kliavkoff for his first two years, Wilner writes: “Kliavkoff doesn’t deserve all the blame, not by any stretch. Responsibility starts with the collection of presidents who ruled the conference ineptly for a dozen years, and former commissioner Larry Scott set the strategies that led the Pac-12 down the road to destruction. But Kliavkoff had a singular mission, to land the media rights deal, and he failed. The collapse of a 108-year-old pillar of college sports occurred on his watch. He’s accountable. His grade? F, of course.” More from Wilner. (link)

Washington State has released a “Cougs vs. Everybody” hype video touting the school’s success as a major program. The video also points out that from 2015-2019 and 2021 WSU ranked fourth among Pac-12 and Big 12 programs in average TV ratings and sixth among Pac-12, Big 12 and ACC programs in games with over 1M viewers. UNLV President Keith Whitfield offers the Mountain West’s perspective on realignment, particularly as it relates to the remaining Pac-12 schools. “There’s four teams that are left, and each one of them has different opportunities that they could pursue. What makes it almost a little more sketchy is…I think most of them aren’t thinking about revitalizing it (Pac-12). It’s more of where can they go.” Whitfield also acknowledges that if the Pac-12 do join another league, it will likely come down to the MWC or AAC but says: “We’re probably more attractive (than the AAC). We’re a better conference,” particularly geographically. Whitfield continues: “That’s what’s driving almost all the business, the television deal and football. We go for ours (new TV deal) in two years. That’s why the complexity of it is incredible. We just want to make sure that the students are taken care of, that we don’t overextend ourselves and that we have great partners.” Whitfield expects the picture to become clearer in the next couple of weeks. St. John’s AD Mike Cragg sits down with Connect/Fox Sports’ Bryan Fischer at the 2023 NACDA Convention and talks about the hiring of Men’s Basketball HC Rick Pitino, growing the brand in the New York market, the strength of the Big East, the growth of women’s hoops and more. Hiring Pitino, Cragg explains, made a splash, and he tells Fischer: “The first step about being in New York is being relevant, and that's a struggle. I mean, 8M people, lots of sports, professional sports, you have to attain relevancy to even have a starting point. You can gain that by winning and winning big and all that takes time…but with Rick he has instant credibility, instant relevancy in New York, and our fans have responded amazingly well. We’ve sold or have deposits on over 1,100 new season tickets. Our fundraising has gone up, our marketing partners with LEARFIELD, every single step has been a tremendous boon, and it's what was needed to really bring us life and recharge our fan base. We have 190K living alums in the tri-state area, so we have to find 18K of them every game, and I think we can do that.” Full conversation on Connect. (link)

Georgia’s Sanford Stadium will be ready to go for the Bulldogs’ opener against UT Martin on September 2. UGA is currently in the midst a $68.5M renovation project, and Assoc. AD for Facilities & Capital Projects Tanner Stines notes: “Game week we might be painting columns ourselves, but we’ll be ready. The stadium is far from being completed, but we could clean it up and be ready to host a game by next week.” As for the renovations themselves, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Chip Towers notes UGA has “blown out the concourses on the lower levels of the south side of the stadium to make them more than twice their previous size. The South 100 Concourse, as it’s known, had been 9 feet wide since the stadium was first built between 1928-29. Now those hallways are more than 21 feet wide, surrounded by walls adorned with colorful graphics documenting Georgia football’s present and past accomplishments.” Stines also notes the project includes the construction of the “largest women’s restroom ever built.” (link)

Star Michigan RB Blake Corum is aware of the short shelf-life of NFL running backs and is choosing to leverage his platform at Michigan to position himself for the future, and his father, James, tells The Athletic’s Austin Meek: “Blake loves football more than anyone, but he understands football doesn’t last. He’s excited to start things that he wants to accomplish after football. He’s getting a jump start on that right now.” Corum also notes the NIL money U-M focused collectives were able to put together was a nice bonus but says he’d already made up his mind to come back. Meek observes that if Corum can play his way into the first round, “the combination of his NIL earnings and his position on the rookie wage scale would put him ahead in the long run. The downside is the risk of another injury for a player whose size will be a limiting factor in the draft. That’s where Michigan’s two-headed backfield could be an asset.” Wolverines RB Donovan Edwards: “That’s why running backs aren’t getting paid — because it’s a perspective that they’re not staying healthy for a whole season. If I can stay healthy for a whole season, that’s where (Corum) and I can split the load so he doesn’t have to take 30 carries anymore.” (link)

The NFL this season will pilot a facial authentication system for credentialed working staff at six stadiums, and SBJ’s Ben Fischer reports the aim is to “ultimately digitize the system by which workers, vendors and media at games prove they are permitted in various parts of a venue at different times.” NFL SVP for Security Cathy Lanier: “There’s a lot of holes in the current system. It’s a system that’s outdated and has a lot of vulnerabilities. It’s easy to pass a fake credential off. It’s difficult for security personnel to read a complex credential that’s got 27 different codes on it.” The league intends to replace the current system of humans examining plastic credentials with a barcode, a user-submitted digital photo and software. The photo will be compared to an actual real-time analysis of the user’s face by Wicket, a facial authentication platform partly backed by Cleveland Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam and already in use by the Browns. The NFL declined to identify the other stadiums that will participate in the pilot. (link)
