Inside the NCAA: 

+ More details from the latest DIII Presidents and Management Council meetings. The new Financial and Risk Management Working Group intends to ask for Presidents Council support to hire a third-party vendor to conduct financial analysis in October with a first draft of said vendor’s findings due in April 2024. Starting in FY24, the NCAA will enact a new accounting process “that separates gross revenues from expenses for championships game operations only,” which will “provide greater transparency of expenses and will create a better process to manage them.” On the expenditure side, the division will allocate $75K for new professional development for Athletics Direct Reports and up to $100K to support 50th anniversary celebration from reserve, that is above and beyond mandated reserve. + The DIII Championships Committee approved a predetermined championship site pilot for Women’s Hockey that will see the 2025 and 2027 championships at predetermined sites with the 2024 and 2026 events remaining at the highest seed’s campus. Due to renovation delays, the 2024 Softball Championship will be moved from Salem, VA to East Texas Baptist, who hosted this past year. The committee also approved the Northeast Women’s Hockey League to transition into the SUNYAC and maintain its AQ. (link)

Birmingham-Southern Football HC Anthony Colucci reflects on the college’s financial troubles this summer and how that will impact the team on the gridiron: “In hindsight, it’s hard to put into words, honestly. The mixture of emotions, thoughts, feelings, questions that took place on any given day were different over a six-month span or so. […] We’re moving forward. It’s really hard to even reflect back on the magnitude of what that was like. […] [Our student-athletes] have been tested, mentally and emotionally – and probably spiritually – more so than any team we’ve ever had, considering what the offseason added to the plate. And they chose to be here because they want to be here, because they love this place, they love this program, they love this institution. They had every opportunity, every excuse to leave or do something else if that’s what they wanted to do. I think that’s going to be our strength.” (link)

A joint survey by Sportico and The Harris Poll found that 25% of U.S. adults strongly agree and 42% somewhat agree that student-athletes should be able to receive direct compensation from their school, while 64% support athletes’ rights to obtain employee status and 59% think they should collectively bargain as a labor union. Americans' stance on supporting profitable NIL deals rose from 62% in November 2020 to 74% in last week’s poll. Further, 60% of the fans in 2020 believed NIL would change their enjoyment of college sports but now that number is just 25%. Notably, 80% of Americans support uniform NIL standards across college sports. More. (link)

College Sports Communicators Second Vice President Mary Beth Challoner and CSC College Division Representative Donnie Smith join Fox Sports/Connect’s Bryan Fischer from the 2023 NACDA Convention to discuss how the industry has changed, ways CSC is adapting, overcoming common challenges at their respective leadership levels and more. When conveying the importance of communications professionals’ roles to athletics departments and university leadership, Challoner says it’s important to note that “you are the pulse of our sports department. You know the coaches, you know the student-athletes, you know the history, you kind of know all the nooks and crannies and all the nuances of this program.” Challoner also notes the pandemic highlighted the importance of communications professionals “because there were a lot of messages.
