TrojansWire’s Matt Wadleigh writes on the intersection of USC’s & Ohio State’s AD searches, gets this from an insider close to the Trojans’ situation: “Are we seeing a situation in which USC and Ohio State have the same No. 1 choice, especially with [AD Jeremiah] Donati of TCU out of the running? Ohio State is probably the favorite to land [Washington State AD Pat] Chun as its next athletic director, but if USC wants to make a run at Chun, the time is now.” (link)

Washington State President Kirk Schulz talked to WSU regent Enrique Cerna about the Cougars current options. The Action Network’s Brett McMurphy notes some of Schulz’s key comments: “WSU has 3 options: join Mountain West, join AAC or rebuild Pac-12. The third option would be to sort of reconstitute or rebuild the Pac - I'll say Pac-X right now, there's 4 members left, but that could change literally w/in hours. And so I think each of those we're pursuing in a parallel pathway & we want to evaluate what's going to be best for WSU." (link, link)

Florida AD Scott Stricklin catches up with the Orlando Sentinel’s Mike Bianchi on the state of industry realignment, which he starts by describing as heading in the direction of “contraction instead of expansion.” More: “College athletics is a unique ecosystem that nobody would devise from home if you were starting from scratch. We have some underlying realities because of how we acquire talent. We are the only sport in America whose sole method of having people join our teams is through recruiting or sales. They have a draft in the NFL and they have a draft in Baseball. Pro sports have a draft and the most basic elementary sport has a draft. College is the only sport based on convincing somebody that your school is where they need to be. When you have that kind of environment, you’re going to put every resource you can to convince talented people to come join your program. We invest in hiring great coaches and paying them, we invest in facilities, we invest in support staff, we invest in nutrition and strength and conditioning and academic counselors and now we have NIL. When that’s the environment you’re in, there’s nothing you won’t spend to get the best players and best people to come to your program.” (link)

Maryland Men’s Basketball HC Kevin Willard notes how the west coast additions to the Big Ten make it the “most elite” hoops league in the country, adds: “Anytime you grow your membership, especially in geographic terms, there will be challenges that have to be addressed. What has been made clear, in relation to our program, is that no teams will have to travel west more than once a year.” (link)

Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy pens that if Apple wants to be a force in live sports then it should buy ESPN and in so doing, Apple would get rights to the NFL, NBA, WNBA, MLB, NHL, UFC, the PGA Tour, tennis Grand Slams, Formula 1, and college football’s Big 12 and SEC Conferences — plus ESPN’s first two Super Bowls after the 2026 and 2030 seasons. Notable author James Andrew Miller says Apple wouldn’t even need to buy 100% of ESPN for it to be a “game-changer… Apple has enough change in their couch cushions to fundamentally alter the media rights landscape.” McCarthy points out that “Even with ESPN’s economic model under pressure from cord-cutting, it’s uncertain whether [Disney CEO Bob] Iger would want to turn off that revenue spigot. Since ESPN will air its Super Bowls and the NBA Finals on ABC, its sister broadcast network would likely have to be included in a deal.” More analysis. (link)

Stratechery’s Ben Thompson examines Disney’s current situation, specifically whether it should split into two companies and what that means for ESPN and sports rights. He writes: “For ESPN to work over-the-top it has to get to scale very quickly, for two reasons: first, and probably most importantly, is the fact that ESPN has fixed costs in terms of sports rights. ESPN can’t afford a long build-up period after it has cannibalized its cable offering (likely triggering significantly lower affiliate fees). The second reason is pertinent to the rest of this. Update: ESPN is a major advertising vehicle, and advertising is ultimately a numbers game, which means Disney needs to get those numbers up as soon as possible. As for potential partners, the big tech companies remain the most obvious candidates, thanks to their control of phones and TV set top boxes; Roku is another candidate as well. Don’t rule out existing cable providers, though: an ESPN streaming service will still run over their infrastructure, and they are just as interested in new revenue opportunities as Disney.” (link)

As FS1 turns 10 years old, Awful Announcing’s Daniel Kaplan examines where the company, which has largely steered clear of streaming so far, goes next. LHB Sports Media, & Entertainment Founder/CEO Lee Berke: “They don’t have those losses that other corporations have gone through, but the flip side is, you have a growing audience that is used to streaming and it’s a younger audience, it’s a tech savvy audience. And it’s growing in size, where in many markets in the country, broadband-only households are roughly 35% to 40% of the total market,” meaning up to two-fifths of the entire market can’t even access Fox Sports. “On a singular DTC basis, they don’t have an outlet for that. So they’re either going to have to partner with somebody who does, or eventually potentially be sold to somebody who does.” That said, Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes, who was SVP of Programming Research and Content Strategy at Fox for FS1’s launch in 2013, believes Fox is well-positioned to ride out the streaming storm “because what they’re doing is they continue to invest in the content that moves the needle, making the most of the declining pay-TV bundle. … The next three to five years are probably going to be brutal. And they certainly are avoiding a lot of the stress that all their brethren are having.” (link)

Collectives for the remaining Pac-12 schools are leveraging the league’s current predicament to issue a rallying cry for additional support, On3’s Andy Wittry reports. Kyle Bjornstad, executive director of the Oregon State-focused Dam Nation Collective: “Without getting specific numbers, I would say there’s a major uptick in conversations or even resuming conversations, outreach through our website, through our contact form. … On this side of things, we’re going to be doing everything in our control and power to make sure that we’re there to support the student-athletes.” Tim Brandle, a founding board member for the Washington State-focused Cougar Collective, says the collective has added 50 new subscribers since the Big Ten announced the additions of Oregon and Washington. “We’re happy with the way the Cougs are responding as opposed to sitting back and just reading their Twitter and hating themselves. They’re doing something about it. It’s really having a positive effect on WSU student-athletes. … Our directive and our focus has been to help the golden goose. The football team has to be successful for all the other programs to thrive and have the financial resources.” (link)

Ohio State wrestling student-athlete Sammy Sasso was shot on Friday in Columbus and is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries. Buckeyes head coach Tom Ryan: “Our coaching staff, along with members of the wrestling program and Athletics administrators, are grateful for the caregivers at WMC, thankful Sasso's injuries are not life-threatening, and are supporting Sasso and his family.” (link)

Texas AD Chris Del Conte is set to receive an extension that could keep him in Austin through FY30. Per the Austin American-Statesman’s Danny Davis: “If approved by the regents, Del Conte would receive a raise for the four years that he is already under contract for. He would then be guaranteed $2.85M, $3M and $3.15M during the three years that were tacked onto his deal. According to Texas, the reworked seven-year contract is worth up to $19.25 million.” UT System Board of Regents chairman Kevin Eltife: “Chris Del Conte came to the Forty Acres with a vision for elevating Texas Athletics to compete and win both on and off the field and he has consistently delivered. In my opinion, he is the best athletic director in the country.” (link)

The NCAA released notes from the DI Competition Oversight Committee’s meeting earlier in the month. Notably, the DI Board of Directors indefinitely postponed the “sport management model that was under consideration for many sports the Competition Oversight Committee oversees.” The 2024 Men’s College Cup is relocating from Sacramento to Cary due to construction. Baylor will host the fall tennis singles and doubles championship pilot in 2024. KPI has been added to the Men’s Volleyball selection criteria. Also, here are a number of waiver approvals and possible changes that were tabled. (link)

Could Verizon be the strategic partner ESPN is looking for? The Information’s Sahil Patel reports Verizon has initiated a conversation with the Worldwide Leader. A bit further, “Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg has made no secret of his openness to such an arrangement [and his] interest in partnering with Disney on the distribution of a streaming version of ESPN earlier this summer.” Verizon currently has 92.5M wireless subscribers. Northwestern has hired Michigan Baseball AC Ben Greenspan as its new skipper. Greenspan: “My personal and professional beliefs align with the mission and values of Northwestern University, where academically oriented student-athletes strive for excellence on the field and in the classroom. My playing and coaching experience in the Big Ten has provided me with a knowledge of the fierce competition and excellence of the Conference. This is a challenge that I welcome.” (link)

UCLA Men’s Basketball HC Mick Cronin isn’t pumped about realignment and tells the Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch: “None of it is in the best interest of the student-athlete, no matter what anybody says. It’s in the best interest of more money to cover the bills. That’s it.” He goes on to posit that most fans don’t understand the finances of running an athletic department. “Like, the public thinks right now that I have the 12 guys on scholarship and they go to UCLA for free. They don’t realize the athletic department at UCLA has 25 sports and 700 kids on scholarship that they have to pay the university for those scholarships. That, right there, 99% of the people do not know that. So why do these schools need all this money? There’s about four athletic departments that actually make money in the entire nation because of scholarship bills and budget expenses, so this all happened because of money, that’s just a reality. … Football is not the problem. We’re all changing leagues because of football? No, no, no. We’re changing leagues to pay the bills for all the sports. Because you have one or two that are revenue sports, if that, at certain schools. The model is they’ve paid for all the other sports forever, and all the bills have gotten too big. So, you gotta do what you’ve got to do to be able to pay ‘em. So, it’s unfair to say football is the problem; they’ve been the answer.” More from Cronin. (link)

Ole Miss Football HC Lane Kiffin talks about his openness in discussing the state of college football, telling SEC Network’s Marty & McGee: “I do that because you guys tell me afterwards when I do those things how appreciative you are. Or I see fans or players’ parents and recruits who say, ‘Wow, thank you, we didn't really know that's what's really happening because no other coach talks like that.’” Kiffin goes on to say the current system has forced him to accept that “you’re not going to have phenomenal culture. It doesn’t mean I don’t work on it, but I think I have to realize it just is what it is. One, we don’t have many kids that are dying to be here. They didn’t grow up wanting to go to Ole MIss. These transfer kids, they're going to a place if it's the best at that time. It’s not about the school and they're not in their third, fourth, fifth year with you to where they know how we do it. … Unfortunately now it's like plug and play.” More from Kiffin. (link)

Le Moyne AD Bob Beretta talks with Syracuse.com’s Chris Carlson about the first 100 days of the Dolphins’ transition to DI and acknowledges that he’s worked closely with both hoops coaches on guarantee games because “that is an area where we can grow revenue. As part of this transition we’re going to try to identify new revenue streams to offset the investment. … But we also didn’t want to sacrifice our student-athletes. I don’t want our basketball teams to play eight or nine guarantee games and have a difficult chance to win any of them. We tried to blend them.” Asked if Le Moyne considered a student fee to help support athletics, Beretta says: “Candidly, we did. The leadership team decided that was not the route we wanted to pursue for our students, at least at this point in time. It’s something we’ll consider in the future and continue to have dialogue around. But our leadership team was strongly opposed to placing the burden of reclassification on the shoulders of our students at this time.” More from Beretta. (link)

Western Michigan gets the green light to sell alcohol at Waldo Stadium this fall. Broncos AD Dan Bartholomae: “It’s going to be incredibly awesome. This is one part of a number of new athletic department experiences that we’re excited about, and I think our fans are going to be excited about. This is that signal of a new era of Western Michigan Bronco athletics.” (link)

A study led by North Carolina A&T researchers shows a clear relationship between low-energy availability (LEA) and hypertension in Black Division I athletes. LEA is defined as the under-consumption of energy, or nutrients, to meet activity demands, and NC A&T professor/principal investigator Troy Purdom explains: “LEA puts the athlete in starvation mode, which creates a system-wide physiological response that when consistently reoccurring can perpetuate deterioration of several systems – gastrointestinal distress, compromised reproductive health in women and men, psychological health, and as it turns out, cardiovascular health. … Black athletes have a cardiovascular disease risk 10 times greater than their white counterparts, with hypertension being the most prevalent risk factor. The elevated risk of hypertension puts athletes at an increased risk of sudden cardiac death, as well as experiencing about a two times greater risk of hypertension development in a five-year follow up.” He adds: “Our hope is to heighten awareness of the prevalence of cardiovascular disease as a result of nutritional deficiencies in athletes and why those deficiencies occur, which historically has not been prioritized by the research community.” (link)
