USC has vetted Minnesota AD Mark Coyle, Florida State AD Michael Alford and FAU AD Brian White for the Trojans’ AD post, the Los Angeles Times’ J. Brady McCollough and Ryan Kartje report, noting that “this isn’t a complete list of USC candidates, but rather athletic directors whose ties to the Trojans’ search have been confirmed by multiple sources interviewed by The Times.” McCollough and Kartje also report several stakeholders were “hopeful” the Trojans would court former Chief of Staff Brandon Sosna for the post, noting that “within the department, there would be support for Sosna, but it is unclear at this point if he is a candidate.” Also: “A source not authorized to speak publicly about the search told The Times that Parker [Executive Search] inquired about the interest of Villanova AD Mark Jackson.” One question those in the industry are asking about the search involves how long USC President Carol Folt will remain in her role. One source says: “You attach yourself to the president as much as you attach yourself to the institution. Then you’re rolling the dice about who’s coming next.” (link); Alford has subsequently released a statement asserting that “I am not now, nor have I been, a candidate for the position at USC. Nor do I have any interest in any role other than my current position at Florida State. I remain totally focused on the tremendous opportunities ahead of us here at FSU, and I remain completely committed to seeing those to completion.” (link)

More from Florida State AD Michael Alford, who says the new football facility in Tallahassee remains on target for its 2025 completion date and notes the Seminoles are currently putting new floors in the basketball training facility. “They were worn, with dead spots and buckling. I mean, that's the type of facility project that we have to stay on. We have a whole new surface in the track facility. So, we're making sure that our facilities are up to par with who Florida State is and making sure we provide the very best for our student-athletes to train on.” Alford also says the decking area at the softball stadium will be extended down to the fence in left field. “The fans loved it. We sold out the premium area in a couple of days.” (link)

UCLA AD Martin Jarmond joins the Rich Eisen Show and says of the Bruins’ decision to join the Big Ten: “It’s about where college athletics is going. You want to be in a conference that has significant reach, and you want to be in a conference that has resources, and you want to put your student-athletes in position to be successful. And to do that, you've got to be with other big brands that are doing great things and that's what the Big Ten is.” On the logistics for Olympic sports’ travel: “Most of our teams are going to do the same amount of away trips or one less in some instances, so if they had four away trips last year, in their first year of Big Ten competition they're going to have four, maybe even three. Now, the distances are longer, and that's where we’ve got to come in to try to mitigate that. What can we do to shorten that time on the road? … And now with Oregon and Washington, does that impact one less trip to the East Coast? Those are all things we’ve got to talk through.” Jarmond also notes college athletics overall is likely going to be playing more MTEs in all sports, which could help alleviate travel as well. Collegiate Sports Associates Founder/Chairman Todd Turner sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to reflect on the relationships he cultivated throughout his career as an athletics leader and the key leadership qualities he observed from his earliest mentors. Turner also urges administrators to find an advocate to serve as a reference when seeking their next career opportunity and says: “Who you work for and where you work is more important than what you do. But you’ve got to be the best at whatever it is you’re doing if you want to take advantage of who you’re working for and where you work.” Turner also observes some of the collegiality among ADs that once existed is missing in many ways. “It’s so competitive today, and I think social media has really added to that. … If it’s not possible, it’s really sad because that was part of the privilege of being in college athletics is the relationships that you develop with people.” Full interview. Wake Forest AD John Currie makes the case that during a period of upheaval in the media industry, having a long-term agreement is actually a strength for the ACC, noting the league’s deal with ESPN is “not as much as some, but it’s more than most. We have our own ACC Network that offers incredible distribution, exposure and visibility to our institutions and student-athletes. That’s a real strength.” Currie doesn’t say directly whether Wake is in favor of adding Stanford and Cal but remarks: “There’s a lot of great reasons to consider expansion. Look back in time, it’s been a consolidating enterprise. I remember the night the old Big East died. We went from the BCS and six, to the Power 5, and sadly now we’ve gone from five to four. History shows that part of strength can be benefited by having the right moments of expansion and growth. If this turns out to be that moment in time, great. If this turns out to not be that moment, then we still have a great way forward and will just continue to assess options.” (link)

The Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel points out that Virginia Tech President Tim Sands, Wake Forest President Susan Wente, Boston College President William Leahy, and Duke President Vincent Price, each of whom has supported adding Stanford and Cal to the ACC, also happen to have degrees from one of the two universities. Teel: “Intriguing? Sheer coincidence? You be the judge. But also realize that college sports media teems with folks who chronicle their alma maters — some occasionally, others exclusively. The group includes me, a James Madison graduate. Do those affiliations, no matter how distant, cloud our judgments? At times, the answer is probably yes. We can only hope that the ACC presidents, in rendering a decision that impacts thousands of current and future athletes and coaches, not to mention legions of fans, summon clarity.” (link)

People & Places…
+ Former USC Upstate AD Daniel Feig has started the first of two new opportunities, recently joining the Collegiate Sports Law practice at Starnes, Davis & Florie with the goal of helping grow the sports law practice nationally. More from Feig: "I'm excited to launch the next phase of my career with two positions - First, I'm excited to be a part of the Collegiate Sports Law practice at Starnes, Davis & Florie, a law firm headquartered in Birmingham, AL. They have consistently achieved extraordinary results for their clients in this space for many years, and I look forward to helping them expand their practice! Second, I'm also thrilled to help launch a new business within college athletics with a few friends aimed at helping make administrators' and coaches' lives easier, which we'll formally announce soon."

UCF AD Terry Mohajir pens an op-ed in the Orlando Sentinel to advocate for using the Orange County Tourism Development Tax to invest in the Knights’ athletic facilities. Mohajir points out that “athletics brings people from across the nation to Orlando, shining a spotlight on our city while also boosting tourism in Orange County, generating more than 200K room nights annually. As we enter this next era of competition, we must seize the opportunity of this moment to invest in our facilities, ensuring our competitiveness and making UCF the ultimate destination for Big 12 competitions. … In fact, we believe our proposal is a strong choice for TDT funding because an investment in UCF will both drive new tourism and deliver greater impact for our community. Our affiliation with the Big 12 puts UCF and Orlando on the mainstage of the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics. We must elevate our current facilities to meet demand and prepare for potential new opportunities that come with joining a Power 5 conference. These facilities not only support the growth of our athletics programs — and generate almost $100M a year in sports tourism — they also provide spaces for high-school graduations, concerts, and family-friendly community events.” Full op-ed. College Sports Communicators Past President and Minnesota Aurora FC President/COO Jessica Poole joins Connect/Fox Sports’ Bryan Fischer from the 2023 NACDA Convention to discuss the past year for CSC. Poole also highlights how skills learned in various roles on the collegiate level translate to many different avenues and opportunities in the ecosystem of athletics. Poole notes that her current club is intentional in its efforts to align itself for expansion, and “in order to do that, in order to be attractive for that, we have to set up policies and procedures – no different than what I did as an AD – budgeting and understanding money and cash flow and revenue generation and what are some new unique things that we can do to get revenue. … I say the biggest change has just been that I'm working with one sport, so I can really laser focus. I can probably see progress a little bit faster in this world than in the college athletics space, but I'm doing the same thing on a day to day basis.” Full Q&A on Connect. (link)

Two former Northwestern football student equipment managers on their own podcast talk about their time with the team and say the practice of “running,” as has been described in previous reports, was known around the program but not “viewed under the lens of hazing” by most “because every time I heard people talking about it they were laughing, pretty much.” The ex-managers do recognize it became troublesome for some players with one saying she realized: “Oh my gosh, this is actually really bad because this can be framed as sexual assault or sexual harassment, and it was.” The former managers, both of whom identify as Black, also push back against racism allegations and say they maintain a positive view of former HC Pat Fitzgerald. “I’ve never experienced racism from this man, and I’ve never seen it directed at a player. Obviously, we can’t speak for [any private interactions], and other people's opinions and their stories are theirs to have, but I personally have never seen it directed at anybody. I've never seen a Black player pulled off the field for a certain hairstyle. I've not really seen him say anything that was so surprising or out of pocket where I felt surprised or endangered as a Black female.” Full podcast. (link)

TrojansWire’s Matt Wadleigh writes on the intersection of USC’s & Ohio State’s AD searches, gets this from an insider close to the Trojans’ situation: “Are we seeing a situation in which USC and Ohio State have the same No. 1 choice, especially with [AD Jeremiah] Donati of TCU out of the running? Ohio State is probably the favorite to land [Washington State AD Pat] Chun as its next athletic director, but if USC wants to make a run at Chun, the time is now.” (link)

Washington State President Kirk Schulz talked to WSU regent Enrique Cerna about the Cougars current options. The Action Network’s Brett McMurphy notes some of Schulz’s key comments: “WSU has 3 options: join Mountain West, join AAC or rebuild Pac-12. The third option would be to sort of reconstitute or rebuild the Pac - I'll say Pac-X right now, there's 4 members left, but that could change literally w/in hours. And so I think each of those we're pursuing in a parallel pathway & we want to evaluate what's going to be best for WSU." (link, link)

Florida AD Scott Stricklin catches up with the Orlando Sentinel’s Mike Bianchi on the state of industry realignment, which he starts by describing as heading in the direction of “contraction instead of expansion.” More: “College athletics is a unique ecosystem that nobody would devise from home if you were starting from scratch. We have some underlying realities because of how we acquire talent. We are the only sport in America whose sole method of having people join our teams is through recruiting or sales. They have a draft in the NFL and they have a draft in Baseball. Pro sports have a draft and the most basic elementary sport has a draft. College is the only sport based on convincing somebody that your school is where they need to be. When you have that kind of environment, you’re going to put every resource you can to convince talented people to come join your program. We invest in hiring great coaches and paying them, we invest in facilities, we invest in support staff, we invest in nutrition and strength and conditioning and academic counselors and now we have NIL. When that’s the environment you’re in, there’s nothing you won’t spend to get the best players and best people to come to your program.” (link)

Maryland Men’s Basketball HC Kevin Willard notes how the west coast additions to the Big Ten make it the “most elite” hoops league in the country, adds: “Anytime you grow your membership, especially in geographic terms, there will be challenges that have to be addressed. What has been made clear, in relation to our program, is that no teams will have to travel west more than once a year.” (link)

Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy pens that if Apple wants to be a force in live sports then it should buy ESPN and in so doing, Apple would get rights to the NFL, NBA, WNBA, MLB, NHL, UFC, the PGA Tour, tennis Grand Slams, Formula 1, and college football’s Big 12 and SEC Conferences — plus ESPN’s first two Super Bowls after the 2026 and 2030 seasons. Notable author James Andrew Miller says Apple wouldn’t even need to buy 100% of ESPN for it to be a “game-changer… Apple has enough change in their couch cushions to fundamentally alter the media rights landscape.” McCarthy points out that “Even with ESPN’s economic model under pressure from cord-cutting, it’s uncertain whether [Disney CEO Bob] Iger would want to turn off that revenue spigot. Since ESPN will air its Super Bowls and the NBA Finals on ABC, its sister broadcast network would likely have to be included in a deal.” More analysis. (link)

Stratechery’s Ben Thompson examines Disney’s current situation, specifically whether it should split into two companies and what that means for ESPN and sports rights. He writes: “For ESPN to work over-the-top it has to get to scale very quickly, for two reasons: first, and probably most importantly, is the fact that ESPN has fixed costs in terms of sports rights. ESPN can’t afford a long build-up period after it has cannibalized its cable offering (likely triggering significantly lower affiliate fees). The second reason is pertinent to the rest of this. Update: ESPN is a major advertising vehicle, and advertising is ultimately a numbers game, which means Disney needs to get those numbers up as soon as possible. As for potential partners, the big tech companies remain the most obvious candidates, thanks to their control of phones and TV set top boxes; Roku is another candidate as well. Don’t rule out existing cable providers, though: an ESPN streaming service will still run over their infrastructure, and they are just as interested in new revenue opportunities as Disney.” (link)

As FS1 turns 10 years old, Awful Announcing’s Daniel Kaplan examines where the company, which has largely steered clear of streaming so far, goes next. LHB Sports Media, & Entertainment Founder/CEO Lee Berke: “They don’t have those losses that other corporations have gone through, but the flip side is, you have a growing audience that is used to streaming and it’s a younger audience, it’s a tech savvy audience. And it’s growing in size, where in many markets in the country, broadband-only households are roughly 35% to 40% of the total market,” meaning up to two-fifths of the entire market can’t even access Fox Sports. “On a singular DTC basis, they don’t have an outlet for that. So they’re either going to have to partner with somebody who does, or eventually potentially be sold to somebody who does.” That said, Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes, who was SVP of Programming Research and Content Strategy at Fox for FS1’s launch in 2013, believes Fox is well-positioned to ride out the streaming storm “because what they’re doing is they continue to invest in the content that moves the needle, making the most of the declining pay-TV bundle. … The next three to five years are probably going to be brutal. And they certainly are avoiding a lot of the stress that all their brethren are having.” (link)

Collectives for the remaining Pac-12 schools are leveraging the league’s current predicament to issue a rallying cry for additional support, On3’s Andy Wittry reports. Kyle Bjornstad, executive director of the Oregon State-focused Dam Nation Collective: “Without getting specific numbers, I would say there’s a major uptick in conversations or even resuming conversations, outreach through our website, through our contact form. … On this side of things, we’re going to be doing everything in our control and power to make sure that we’re there to support the student-athletes.” Tim Brandle, a founding board member for the Washington State-focused Cougar Collective, says the collective has added 50 new subscribers since the Big Ten announced the additions of Oregon and Washington. “We’re happy with the way the Cougs are responding as opposed to sitting back and just reading their Twitter and hating themselves. They’re doing something about it. It’s really having a positive effect on WSU student-athletes. … Our directive and our focus has been to help the golden goose. The football team has to be successful for all the other programs to thrive and have the financial resources.” (link)

Ohio State wrestling student-athlete Sammy Sasso was shot on Friday in Columbus and is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries. Buckeyes head coach Tom Ryan: “Our coaching staff, along with members of the wrestling program and Athletics administrators, are grateful for the caregivers at WMC, thankful Sasso's injuries are not life-threatening, and are supporting Sasso and his family.” (link)
