Colorado Mesa AD Miller, who assumed the role in August 2022, resigned, effective January 4, to pursue opportunities in closer proximity to family. President Marshall: “I thank Dr. Miller for an extraordinary expenditure of effort and enthusiasm during her tenure as athletic director at CMU. Her lifelong love for athletics and education was on full display during her time on campus. The DII membership will vote on a dozen proposals at next week's NCAA Convention including changes to the composition of the DII Presidents Council, Management Council, Strategic Planning and Finance Committee and more; amending the DII legislative process; eliminating the test score requirements; redefining agents and the use of agents; adding Stunt as an emerging women's sport and more. In membership-sponsored proposals, the membership will consider allowing FB student-athletes to compete in three contests during their initial year of enrollment without using a year, allowing FB intersquad scrimmages in the spring, altering the start of the hoops season and expanding summer access that S-As can have with coaches. (link)

Emory & Henry announces plans to add WLAX in 2024 and MLAX in 2025, increasing its sport offering to 29. Both programs will compete in the SAC and be housed at E&H’s new multi-sport complex. The Wasps have named Montreat (NAIA) WLAX HC as its inaugural WLAX HC. (link)

The FTC is proposing a new rule that would ban noncompete clauses. From the commission: “By stopping this practice, the agency estimates that the new proposed rule could increase wages by nearly $300 billion per year and expand career opportunities for about 30 million Americans.” Director of the Office of Policy Planning Wilkins adds: “Research shows that employers’ use of noncompetes to restrict workers’ mobility significantly suppresses workers’ wages—even for those not subject to noncompetes, or subject to noncompetes that are unenforceable under state law. The proposed rule would ensure that employers can’t exploit their outsized bargaining power to limit workers’ opportunities and stifle competition.” The FTC is asking for comments on the proposal and will make any changes based on these comments which are due in the next 60 days.
