USC officially introduced Washington AD Jen Cohen as its next AD, and President Carol Folt said of Cohen’s selection: “Jen Cohen really stood out for her experience, her dedication to students and their success, and her known strengths as a team builder. … She’s also already an influential national voice in college athletics, and I think we need to hear about that as things go forward.” Cohen noted that ”USC is a national powerhouse in every measure of college athletics, and I look forward to honoring the Trojan heritage while working alongside the incredible USC Athletics team as we embrace both the opportunities and challenges of this complex moment.” In a Q&A session with reporters, Cohen was asked about balancing UW’s move to the Big Ten while being pursued for her new role and said: “When I was focused on getting Washington in the Big Ten I was 100% focused on getting Washington in the Big Ten.” (link, link); USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz notes Cohen’s buyout with Washington is $1M. Washington State President Kirk Schulz last week suggested Fox may have enticed Washington and Oregon to join the Big Ten as part of a strategy to prevent Apple signing a deal with the Pac-12. “We’ve got just a couple networks that are making the real decisions about who goes where based on the dollars they want to put into it. I do think if I was Fox and ESPN, I’m not sure I want Apple in the marketplace, frankly. I don’t want somebody with pockets that are that deep as a rival if I can afford it.” Schulz went on to remark that “the more you pull competition out of the marketplace, the easier it becomes for some of those funders to really, really call the shots. We’re sort of down to really two dominant players that are really determining what happens with expansion. I don’t mean necessarily that any one of them is calling a commissioner and saying, ‘Go get these two schools.’ Maybe that’s happening; I don’t know that. But what is happening is the commissioner calls them and says, ‘We’d like to add X and Y,’ and (the networks) get to make the decision, ‘Do I give a pro-rata amount for that?’ Or do I say, ‘Sorry, we’re not going to give you any money.’ I would argue that’s the golden rule: Whoever has the gold makes the rules. And that’s where we are right now.” (link)

Summit League Commissioner Josh Fenton tells Extra Points publisher Matt Brown the league opted to sign a media rights deal with CBS Sports and Midco rather than ESPN at least in part because “the number one priority was expanded linear transmission. We believe that linear transmission still matters today. I’m not suggesting it’s going to matter the same way in five or ten years from now, but today, it does matter. We got a lot of feedback from our constituents, particularly our basketball coaches, in that regard. Our second priority was revenue. For this particular deal, even beyond a rights fee, there are some opportunities to earn some revenue share, based on subscriber numbers. Our third priority was building a brand and a better fan experience. In our previous deals, our digital component was pretty fragmented, and our linear distribution was limited. And then lastly, was protecting local and regional relationships. We have several institutions that have existing local broadcast relationships that are financially important, or important from an exposure perspective. So those were our guiding principles. We have a lot of respect for ESPN, and there were other options that we looked at as well, but when we looked at what options were more true to our four priorities, it was clear that the best option was with CBS and Midco.” (link)

With the proliferation of wearable technologies, the NCAA Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports encourages schools to consider the intent of the technology and the data collected as well as whether consent has been established for collection and use of the data. Other considerations should include what is permitted to access the data, how user privacy will be protected and properly mitigating the unintended social and mental impacts on student-athletes. Also from the committee: “NCAA playing rules committees and the Playing Rules Oversight Panel should continue to review existing and relevant playing rules and consider changes that would contribute to a more permissive environment for medical decision-making. Additionally, policies involving performance technology should avoid implicit or explicit endorsement of a specific product. Any rules modifications should be mindful of, and should not violate, existing playing equipment standards, certifications and/or warranties.” Full statement. (link)

Now live on Connect: ESPN VP Events Clint Overby joins Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker to discuss Week 0 in college football as well as conference realignment and the growth of ESPN-owned events. Overby also shares the history of how ESPN events was born and how it has grown to operating 17 different bowl games, matchups in 35 different college sports, and a new gymnastics event set to debut in 2024. Overby explains the impact of realignment on ESPN Events is still TBD as the conferences figure out their scheduling, travel and business operations. “At the same time, down the line, obviously there will be an impact on the college football postseason, and we're just now starting to get to that conversation. There obviously will be an impact of some level in terms of where conference alignments have been historically and where they now will have to gravitate to with different conference affiliations, but we're not quite there in terms of that conversation. We’re in the ‘review, look at it, evaluate it [phase],’ but we're not in any type of execution or activation phase in terms of how to truly deal with the new alignment.” Lots more in the full Q&A only on Connect. Meanwhile, the New York Post’s Ryan Glasspiegel writes on early negotiations for the expanded College Football Playoff programming inventory: “Sources from multiple networks told The Post that the initial prices quoted for the next two years’ first-round games, as well as potential playoff rights beyond 2025-26, are ‘exorbitant.’” Further: “The chatter for weeks has been that conferences not named the Big Ten and SEC should be careful about overplaying their hands with revenue or automatic qualifier demands. One source cautioned to The Post that the other conferences risk implosion along the lines of the Pac-12, which greatly overvalued itself in network rights negotiations, if they stand too obstinately in the way of what the Big Ten and SEC want.” (link)

The NFLPA has terminated its trading card deal with Panini, which had exclusive rights through the 2026 season, Action Network’s Darren Rovell reports, adding that Fanatics, which had been set to take over rights in 2026, would instead take over three years early. Rovell points out that “Panini’s college football deal is also through the NFLPA, so this would mean they are out there too, unless they sign players one by one. Would be hard to nearly impossible to make a set now.” Also: “In order for Fanatics to fully produce NFL cards as soon as the 2023 season, the deal between Panini and the NFL would have to crumble, too. Otherwise, Fanatics would be able to create cards with player names and likenesses — but not with team photos or names.” (link, link)

James Madison AD Jeff Bourne discusses the obstacles JMU faces in regards to football scheduling, telling the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel: “We’ve had extreme difficulty getting institutions to play us here. That challenge (also) goes to a lot of Power 5s not wanting to play us at all, even at their place. There’s not a week that goes by that we don’t actively and aggressively try to find schools that would be willing to do that.” Teel notes that ACC teams last season played 10 Group of 5 road games, and that number this year is down to six. The SEC is playing three G5 road games, the Big Ten none. More Bourne: “I’m not asking for a long-term contract. I’m just asking for one (home game) right now. I feel like we’re very reasonable in what we’re asking. I think it’s the right thing to do for the state overall.” (link)

East Tennessee State is launching the “Be Great” Student-Athlete Success Paradigm. The initiative is built on 10 pillars, which include Athletic Performance, Academic Performance, Mental Health, Nutrition, Career Development, Sports Psychology, Networking, Mentoring and Peer Counseling, Student/Staff Engagement, and a Leadership Academy. To support the program, ETSU is also launching the “I Give A Buc” campaign which encourages donors to give a “Buc” every day for a total of $365 per year. Bucs AD Doc Sander: “This campaign is not the typical athletic giving where people generate priority for tickets or other benefits, this campaign is totally about helping create the best possible experience for our student-athletes from nutrition to career help to mental health. My goal is to have 1,000 individuals commit to invest in our ‘Be GREAT’ Student-Athlete Success Paradigm by making a commitment to the ‘I Give A Buc” campaign.” (link)

Troy Sports Properties announces the Trojans Together Collective as its official NIL entity. Trojans AD Brent Jones: “The student-athletes are at the forefront of every decision we make and providing them with the opportunity to maximize their NIL opportunities is a priority for Troy Athletics. From its inception, we have embraced NIL and worked to provide our student-athletes with resources and avenues for them to reach their full potential in the marketplace, and our partnership with Trojans Together further strengthens that commitment.” (link)

Cohen Becomes a Trojan…
+ USC has named Washington AD Jen Cohen as its next AD, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel and other outlets. The Athletic’s Antonio Morales observes: “USC’s athletic department has dealt with several controversies over the past decade-plus so keeping the department out of the news cycles will likely be a point of emphasis. This is Folt’s second AD hire as USC’s president and the second time she has gone out of the Trojan family, so it’s clear she wants an outside perspective.” (link, link)
+ One UW source tells The Athletic: “A lot of places can’t get out of their own way. If they let her do her thing, she’ll kill it there. She is as smooth as she could be. She just gets it. She knows how to solve issues. She reads people so well. She’s tough, has guts, and she’ll do the right thing.” (link)
+ JohnCanzano.com’s namesake: “Cohen will boost (Lincoln) Riley’s football program, galvanize the USC base, make everyone feel vital to the mission, and give the athletic department strong leadership. It’s a loss for UW and a gain for the Trojans.” (link)
+ The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner wastes no time, suggesting several potential replacements for Cohen at Washington, including Oregon State AD Scott Barnes, Washington State AD Pat Chun, Missouri AD Desiree Reed-Francois, Nevada AD Stephanie Rempe, Fresno State AD Terry Tumey, Montage International VP/former UW Senior Assoc. AD O.D. Vincent, and San Diego State AD J.D. Wicker. That said, Wilner believes the search will likely start with former Huskies/Boise State Football HC Chris Peterson; however, Wilner is doubtful Peterson would want the job. (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey reiterates his position that the College Football Playoff needs to be reconsidered following the latest round of realignment. “I'm not convinced we need to reconsider the number of teams, and I've been clear that I would have been OK with an eight-team playoff with no conference champion access. That wasn't, if you will, politically tenable within the group. So as we continued to look at the models, we came up with the six-and-six model. But, again, the circumstances have changed in a meaningful way, and my inclination is we need to reexamine the current format. … We could stay at four and we could stay at the four best teams, and that is just a straightforward representation of our attitude. But the idea of 12 creates a balance. I think all of that's an indication of a willingness to support the game more broadly than just one conference's interests. If it was just one conference's interests, I could have been obstinate that we stay at four as long as we wanted and then let's go negotiate Year 13 [2026].” (link)

A group of 86 former Northwestern student-athletes has penned an open letter criticizing the university for disregarding due process before parting ways with former Football HC Pat Fitzgerald, warning that doing so has “left a welcome mat out for the weaponization of sexual harassment, hazing, and racism allegations.” The letter takes direct aim at President Michael Schill and Wildcats AD Derrick Gragg and contends both displayed a “clear failure of unbiased and principled leadership." As such, the former athletes argue Schill and Gragg should be let go if they don't "positively support our athletic programs with due process" and release the findings of an investigation Northwestern commissioned into hazing allegations from a former player under Fitzgerald. The letter also takes issue with Gragg’s characterization of shirts that read “Cats Against the World” as tone deaf. "His comments worked to incite public opinion against his own program. Gragg made no effort to explain the team's true intent before renouncing and shaming the players' speech." (link)

Michigan AD Warde Manuel confirms the Wolverines are moving ahead with a self-imposed three-game suspension of Football HC Jim Harbaugh. “While the ongoing NCAA matter continues through the NCAA process, today's announcement is our way of addressing mistakes that our department has agreed to in an attempt to further that process. We will continue to support Coach Harbaugh, his staff, and our outstanding student-athletes. Per the NCAA's guidelines, we cannot comment further until the matter is resolved." (link)

A growing number of athletic departments are constructing mixed-use developments on or near campus to enhance the game-day experiences for fans, including Iowa State’s CYTown, which Cyclones AD Jamie Pollard says will “become a destination in Ames,” adding: “Universities don’t think entrepreneurial enough, by nature. We tend to think very parochially. We tend to want to be in control.” Kansas, Tennessee, Wake Forest and South Carolina are also in various phases of planning for entertainment districts, and Nations Group President Chris Nations tells SBJ’s Michael Smith the “realities of universities doing it versus professional teams is on the total opposite side of the mission and the goal. What works is when the university takes a substantial interest in the project (like $25M to $50M in infrastructure investment) and behaves like a city or state government and sets the ground sometimes literally for developers.” Gamecocks AD Ray Tanner adds: “You hear a lot about these types of venues all across the country, both pro and college. I’d have to say that we’re near the front when you consider our stadium’s location and the amount of space we have around it. The key is that we have the space and we have the land. We have the population to support these types of initiatives. Not everybody does. This could be a game-changer for us.” (link)

It’s Personnel…
+ Michigan State Interim President Teresa Woodruff will not apply for the permanent post, saying: “As the third interim president of MSU in the last five years, I wish for a period of stability for the university. Thus, and to enable that goal, I do not seek the full-time presidency but will support the individual selected for this role as they assume the helm.” (link)
+ Manhattan Interim AD Irma Garcia makes clear she would like to continue in the role permanently, saying: “I feel confident they will take the interim off. I don’t want to talk about the past, but instead what we can do now and into the future.” (link)
+ Northern Kentucky taps Western Illinois Deputy AD/SWA Sarah Pruess for its Senior Assoc. AD for Student Services/SWA role. Pruess will have oversight of Norse Athletics student services including compliance, academics, life skills programming, athletic training and strength and conditioning, along with supervision of select sports programs. (link)
+ Boston U. Assoc. AD for Compliance and Strategic Planning Aaron Aaker is stepping down to take over as Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Operations at MIT (DIII). (link)
+ Longtime ESPN anchor Scott Van Pelt has signed a new multi-year deal with the company and will add Monday Night Countdown to his hosting duties. (link)
+ ESPN has parted ways with SVP of Production Lee Fitting, whose oversight duties included the College Football Playoff, College GameDay and the SEC Network along with Monday Night Football. OutKick’s Dan Zaksheske reports Head of Event & Studio Production Norby Williamson is expected to address Fitting’s departure and lay out the plans for the new football programming structure later this month. Coaches Corner…
+ Former West Virginia Men’s Basketball HC Bob Huggins has entered a 12-month diversion program to resolve his DUI arrest earlier this year. Under the agreement, Huggins’ one-year probation period can be completed after six months if he meets all conditions, including the completion of an alcohol treatment program. (link)

Ticket Tabulations…
+ Wisconsin has experienced a 95% season ticket renewal rate for football and added a net of 661 new season ticket holders for the upcoming season. The Badgers have also sold 5K more single-game tickets as of August 15 than last year, which equates to an increase of $800K in single-game ticket revenue YoY. Additionally, UW has sold nearly double the amount of three-game ticket packs over last season. (link)
+ Memphis is offering a ticket promotion whereby fans can buy a $60 ticket for the opener vs. Bethune-Cookman, and if Tigers win, fans will get a free ticket to the next home game. Action Network’s Brett McMurphy notes this “continues for each home game until Memphis loses at home.” (link)
+ Louisville will offer additional premium floor seating at the KFC Yum! Center for the upcoming men's basketball and women's basketball seasons. The Cardinals are installing a second row of courtside seats to the baseline around the floor. Included in the cost of the ticket are a parking pass, access to all premium clubs in the arena, right of first refusal for other events at the KFC Yum! Center, and exclusive access to the event level. (link)

Facility Features…
+ Nebraska players get their first look at the Cornhuskers’ new locker room. The same opportunity now awaits you. (link)
+ More on Northwestern’s proposal to lower its maximum number of concerts at Ryan Field from 10 to six, as the Pioneer Press’ Alex Hulvalchick reports the university is also offering to guarantee a minimum of $2M in annual tax and fee revenue from the stadium to the city of Evanston “with the potential for increases depending on the number of events held each year. It also would add concert ticket surcharges to donate $500K to Evanston Public Schools annually and give an additional $250K to support an event in partnership with the city to ‘benefit our entire community as directed by city leadership.’” Northwestern Accountability Alliance President David DeCarlo is unimpressed with the proposal, saying: “Northwestern knows it is losing the battle of public opinion. So they sprung this updated proposal less than a week before the Land Use Commission hearing with their characteristic stealth. Still seeking a radical zoning change, and failing to address environmental, financial, and labor concerns with the stadium rebuild, this ‘offer’ is nothing but a fig leaf in NU’s quest to remake entire neighborhoods and disrupt life in Evanston and beyond.” (link)
+ The new Hella Matrix turf installation at Texas Tech’s Jones AT&T Stadium is nearly complete, and the Red Raiders hope to be able to practice in the stadium this week. The stadium is also getting an updated Musco Total Light Control technology system that should be ready to go for this season. The projects cost ~$900K & $1.2M, respectively. (link)

Colorado has reached a deal with Buffs Football HC Deion Sanders’ business manager Constance Schwartz-Morini, the co-founder of SMAC Productions and SMAC Entertainment, to produce a docu series on Sanders for Amazon. In exchange for filming on campus in Boulder and the publicity that will flow from it, CU has agreed to give SMAC Productions certain rights and terms, per USA Today’s Brent Schrotenboer, who notes “no cash compensation for Colorado is mentioned, unlike similar arrangements in college sports in recent years, including at Michigan, which got $2.25M for access and licensing tied to its football show on Amazon in 2017. CU Director of Communications Steve Hurlbert: “The exposure of hiring Coach Prime has already paid dividends in the form of record-breaking ticket and merchandise sales, and we are confident the documentary will only increase these 'Prime Effect' impacts throughout the university.” Also, per the contract, CU has input on editing, but not final control, though the producer "shall defer" to the regulatory experts employed by CU on issues involving compliance with NCAA rules and laws. The university likewise has the right to request removal of any footage "that a reasonable person would deem portrays CU, its students, faculty, and/or staff in an extremely negative manner and is damaging to the value of the university brand." The Tennessee-focused Volunteer Club now has over 3K members, which On3’s Pete Nakos reports makes it one of the most competitive in the country, on par with the Ole Miss-focused Grove Collective. Nakos also notes the collective has expanded to allow Knoxville businesses to join. (link)

On3’s Jamie Shaw asks several basketball coaches around the country now NIL is impacting their recruiting efforts, and one SEC coach tells him: “If you don’t have the funds, you can’t compete. That being said, kids and families still want to feel like you’re recruiting them; they don’t want to feel like you’re buying them.” One Big East coach says most schools are no longer investing in high school recruits’ potential, explaining: “If staff cannot have the vision for serious upside, the high school prospect will certainly be left with considerably fewer options, both in the level of schools recruiting him and the sheer number of schools that value him.” An Atlantic 10 coach adds: “I think the common thought in college is you want to get old and stay old. But I think there’s a valuable opportunity for mid-majors to get slightly better talent than before the portal era. I believe you take the guys that can help you win. They can come from a local high school or be playing 4.000 miles away if they can help you and fit your culture, you take them.” (link)
