ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports the “potential additions of Cal, Stanford and SMU to the ACC are again under serious consideration by the league. A small group of ACC presidents met Wednesday morning to discuss financial models that would come with the additions. Those models are expected to include significant financial concessions from the school that will be added. More meetings are expected this week. Just one vote is needed among the block of UNC, NC State, Clemson and Florida State to get the three new schools in, assuming all the yes votes are in agreement with the financial arrangements. A realistic timeline for a decision is about one week. There’s expected to be a pool of money created from these additions, and the ACC presidents are discussing how the money would be split. The mechanics of that are still to be worked out, including a performance pool for success initiatives. The concessions expected from SMU include a willingness to take no broadcast media revenue for the first seven years they are in the league. Stanford and Cal would both receive the same share, which will both be reduced but different in form than SMU's concessions.” (link)

Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick tells Dan Patrick that “I don’t know if it was particularly close, but if we hadn’t been able to find a home for our Olympic sports with the ACC, maintaining football independence would have been problematic. We needed a partner who would allow our Olympic sports to participate at the level we want them to.” Asked if the Irish might join the ACC at some point in football, Swarbrick replied that “all the major conferences are a possibility”, and noted that if NBC doesn’t extend the current TV deal at a higher price and “if we didn’t have somebody else that was willing to step up,” then Notre Dame would, in fact, join a conference. The current college sports landscape is a “complete disaster,” Swarbrick continued, adding that “everybody in the industry has to take responsibility here. I’m not excluding myself from that. I think the decision-making has lost its way in terms of the focus on the student athlete and what’s primarily best for them. But we are where we are, and we have to try to make it work.” On whether this is the end of the Pac-12, Swarbrick acknowledged that it’s “looking that way more & more every day, yes.” On Stanford and Cal: “You can’t have two of the great academic institutions in the world not have a place to play. We’re working on (a solution). There’s still consideration of the ACC as a home for those schools.” (link, link)

Wake Forest AD John Currie covers several topics on the Ovies + Giglio show, including the travel considerations associated with adding Stanford and Cal. Currie points out that by and large all road trips for the Demon Deacons are plane trips. “So, the facts are that if you add one or two West Coast schools – and, again, those are presidential-level conversations – but just looking at it on the surface…you're looking at a football program that’s going to go out there once every four years. We're already out there back and forth – you know I can't remember the numbers – but it's seven or eight of our teams are out there last year in that vicinity and then if you look at other places you know that's part of the deal. I don’t minimize that, though. It takes creativity and it takes planning, and that’ll continue to be part of the enterprise.” Currie goes on to note that overall, “you’ve got to look at these things as short-term and long-term. What’s the effect of not making decisions to expand, which may be the right decisions? What’s the effect of making those decisions? Some will be evident immediately. Some won't be evident for three or four or five or 10 years or whatever. So,I think you’ve got to look at the big picture of strength and where you want to be down the road.” Full podcast. (link)

Conference USA schools have agreed to a GOR through 2027, according to Action Network’s Brett McMurphy, who adds that the league’s media deal is worth $800K per year per school and any school leaving before 2027 must pay $800K for each year remaining in GOR. The conference’s previous media deal through which the majority of games streamed on Stadium and Facebook, was for $400K annually per school. (link)

INFLCR Founder Jim Cavale and former Penn/NFL linebacker Brandon Copeland have launched Athlete.org, a free membership organization open to all student-athletes that provides on-demand support as they navigate college experience. The platform also serves as a way to discuss the future of college sports. On3’s Pete Nakos explains that student-athletes who join “will have access to ask any question to the app, interact with a pro bono expert and view a registry of AO-verified agents and collectives. While AO is not a union, it does aim to educate athletes on the current issues facing college sports and create chapters based on sports and conferences. Cavale: “There are a lot of things happening in college sports. NIL and the transfer portal are only the beginning of where we are headed. There have been associations for the colleges, coaches and even the athletic directors for a long time. It’s a time where athletes need to finally have their own association.” Cavale also points out that AO is a nonprofit entity and is funded by a group of strategic partners. Cavale declined to identify any partners other than On3. Lots more. (link, link)

Guinness plans to send 250 Diageo execs, employees, customers and distributors from the U.S. to Dublin for Saturday’s Navy-Notre Dame game as part of the Notre Dame Global Partner program. The weekend includes a party at the Guinness Storehouse, where the Fighting Irish expect to host around 1,000 fans and guests. Notre Dame SVP of Global Partnerships Sean Wallis expects roughly a dozen brands to hold activations in Dublin and tells SBJ’s Michael Smith: “It’s another measure of the Notre Dame fans and their willingness to travel wherever the team is playing. It’s a real bucket list item.” Anthony Travel expects around 40K Americans to make the trip. (link)

UT Arlington AD Jon Fagg gives himself “hopefully a solid B” for his first year on the job. “We’re on the right track. I do think that our culture is shifting. Regarding his leadership style, Fagg believes it’s important to build personal relationships with his staff, explaining that “I think that people who feel valued but challenged will find a way to operate at peak performance.” UTA Executive Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Debbie Garcia notes that Fagg’s “process of learning about us and learning about how we operate and everything has triggered us to communicate a lot more with one another, which has been a really positive thing. … It makes you feel very supported. It makes it OK to stop and take a second and back away because they understand that piece of your life.” More. (link)

North Alabama AD Josh Looney sits down with D1.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle at the 2023 NACDA Convention and discusses the importance of constructing Bank Independent Stadium on campus, the potential for revenue generation, the transition from DII to DI and the process of hiring a new head football coach, among other topics. Looney points out that UNA does plan on maximizing the revenue generation at Bank Independent Stadium by hosting concerts and other events and tells Eargle: “This is going to be designed to be far more than athletics. It needs to boost and raise the profile of our institution. We are a music community [in Muscle Shoals]. We need to design it in a way where we can host concerts, and it needs to be far more than five Saturdays a year for football. And that's the awesome thing when you can have a transformational project like that that’s not just impacting your university but your entire community.” Full Q&A on Connect. (link)

USC QB Caleb Williams is joining Dr. Pepper’s Fansville campaign. As part of the partnership, Dr. Pepper is making a “Fanicures” nail kit available for purchase on its website, a press release from Dr. Pepper explains the Williams nail kit “gives fans what they need to express their fandom on all ten digits and includes two bottles of nail polish in Dr Pepper’s signature maroon and white, as well as a variety of college football inspired nail décor.” Williams also addresses the difficulty of becoming a repeat Heisman winner: “I think every year they try to choose the best player, but they want to add people to the fraternity. A lot of players might not play at the same level they played the year before, or another player might just have played flat-out better than them. You have a fair shot to go out there and do your thing, play better than you did last year. You have the same shot as anybody else, but you just have to go out there and do it.” (link)

Iowa football student-athlete Noah Shannon was issued a season-long suspension by the NCAA in relation to sport gambling and will appeal, The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman reports. Hawkeyes HC Kirk Ferentz: “In Noah’s case, he has not committed a crime at all. So nothing criminal. I just feel like it’s a little bit harsh to me personally, and just I’m hopeful that they’ll reconsider his case. I know he bet on one of our other sports teams here, and I understand that may be a bad thing. He bet for them, and I’m guessing he got caught up in the emotion.” (link)
