North Carolina Women’s Soccer HC Anson Dorrance acknowledges that adding Stanford and Cal to the ACC would be a “wonderful feather in the cap of our commissioner, but for us, with boots on the ground, no. This is going to be horrible for us. Our budgets aren’t extraordinary as it is, and now we would try to add in flights across the country to play these two schools, which will be incredibly expensive and then the fact that now we're exposing the whole country – not that Stanford and Cal don't have a national recruiting platform, of course they do – but if you put those two schools in the ACC, it's going to be so easy for them to recruit nationally. So, it'll just benefit them in my opinion, not us. We've built the best women's soccer conference in the country, and there's no way I want to share the glory of our conference with two schools that could do a very good job recruiting against us, and so basically I want Cal and Stanford to die on the vine. I look forward to seeing Stanford, which is a very difficult school to recruit against, I would look forward to them basically having it be so difficult for them to recruit the elite soccer player and then we would be in a position to obviously gain those kids and put the ACC in an even stronger position.” (link)

The latest from JohnCanzano.com’s namesake: “The MWC knows it’s not going to get Stanford and Cal to join it. But there appears to be an appetite among MWC presidents for some other creative possibilities. Could the MWC and Pac-12 operate under the same umbrella? With San Diego State and some select others joining Stanford, Cal, WSU and OSU in a “Pac-12” division? Would that come with exit fees? Or would it just be a semi-merger that added four schools to the Pac-12?” One MWC source says the league is “open to everything.” (link)

Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich notes that reports of Stanford and SMU potentially tapping their endowments to replace media rights distributions and therefore make themselves more attractive to the ACC are likely misguided. Penn professor Karen Weaver points out that not only are endowment funds typically “legally bound up in so many different ways,” universities are incentivized to keep the funds where they are for bond ratings and investment purposes. Stanford spends roughly 5% of its endowment every year, which equates to roughly $1.8B, $425M of which goes to scholarships and financial aid. Christovich also points out 75% of Stanford’s endowment is already spoken for. “In an act of desperation, a school like Stanford could decide — via a vote by its Board of Trustees — to reallocate some of the funds. But Stanford or SMU would have to agree to do so for up to the next 13 years, which may not be palatable to the boards — or the alumni rich enough to single-handedly fund the transition.” (link)

West Virginia AD Wren Baker talks about the league’s latest expansion and admits that “if you think back to two years ago and what it looked like for the Big 12…it did not look very good for the league. I probably would not have wanted to wager on the future of the league, and so to see where we are now, where I believe we're clearly in the top three most stable conferences in the country, you are starting to see for the very first time the television dollars out there, those are getting constricted. So, making sure we can shore up where we're at and and where we're positioned moving into the future was critical, and I think Commissioner [Brett] Yormark, the presidents in our league and the ADs in our league were patient, waded through it…but I think the Big 12 is a big winner in this round of realignment.” Of the incoming schools from the Pac-12, Baker points out that more than their market size, their ability to penetrate those markets is particularly important “and what they can bring in terms of eyeballs and subscriptions as it moves to that. That’s where the real value is, and that’s where this round of realignment will bear out very well for us.” More from Baker. (link)

Unexpected construction delays to the runway at Manhattan (KS) Regional Airport will impact plans for teams traveling to and from Kansas State, per Wildcats AD Gene Taylor. The runway was originally slated to be finished by September 6 but now won’t be ready until September 25. Taylor: “Folks at the airport authority are pushing really hard. They know that it impacts a lot of things, not just us clearly, the commercial flights, the American flights. They’re doing everything they can to get that open, So if for some reason it changes, we’ll adjust again like we have so far.” (link)

Former USC running back Reggie Bush will announce today his intention to file a defamation suit against the NCAA. Bush’s attorneys explain the lawsuit is “based on the NCAA maliciously attacking his character through a completely false and highly offensive statement that was widely reported in the media and substantially and irreparably damaged his reputation. Specifically, on July 28, 2021, the NCAA ... falsely issued a statement to reporters that because of Mr. Bush’s prior involvement in a ‘pay-for-play arrangement’ the NCAA would not consider restoring his collegiate records that it vacated in 2010, which subsequently resulted in Mr. Bush having to return his Heisman Trophy [the first player in history to do so]. Within less than a day, this false statement was republished by no less than 20 different media organizations and circulated to readers around the world. The NCAA knew Mr. Bush was never even accused of, involved in, much less sanctioned for any ‘pay-for-play arrangement’ which never occurred.” (link)

The NCAA has issued eligibility rulings for 11 current Iowa student-athletes implicated in the sports gambling investigation, though the university has not identified the athletes. Action Network’s Brett McMurphy reports that “depending on violations, penalties could range anywhere from simply attending prevention education to permanent loss of college eligibility.” UI says it will support student-athletes who wish to appeal the rulings. “The University of Iowa and the UI Athletics Department have been working cooperatively with the NCAA Student-Athlete Reinstatement (SAR) staff to determine the eligibility of student-athletes who were involved in sports wagering. The institution has received the SAR determinations for the 11 individuals who are current student-athletes. Because this information is protected through the Family Education Right and Privacy Act (FERPA), specific information will only be released once we have received the student’s consent.” (link, link)

The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman observes that Nebraska President Ted Carter’s departure to Ohio State “leaves Nebraska and its structure of leadership in a compromised position at an inopportune moment.” Sherman is referencing the recent decision by the NU Board of Regents to place athletics within Carter’s direct purview. Now, Sherman notes, as the “winds of conference realignment swirl and uncertainty exists at every level of NCAA governance, Nebraska needs the type of stable leadership that Carter has offered. … [Huskers AD Trev] Alberts is set in October to unveil plans…to renovate Memorial Stadium. Carter’s clout and the respect he commands in this state could have aided Alberts in finding new sources of revenue to help fund the project. But now, the president is just serving out his final months.” (link)

+ Georgia Southern signs a multiyear partnership with REVELxp. (link)
+ The San Diego State men’s basketball team has entered into an NIL agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice through which the entire Aztecs squad will promote fentanyl awareness and prevention through social media efforts. Terms of the “Block Fentanyl” campaign – which also includes the U.S. Attorney’s Office and San Diego City Attorney’s office – were not disclosed. Acting U.S. Attorney Andrew R. Haden: “We are willing to do whatever it takes to save lives and spread the word that fentanyl is still claiming many lives, and every one of us can and must take action to prevent fatal overdoses. I’d like to thank the incredible SDSU student-athletes, who did not hesitate to answer our call for help. They have graciously used their celebrity and influence for the most important cause: Keeping fellow students from making a fatal mistake with fentanyl.” (link)
+ Michigan has signed a partnership agreement with Peloton which will place co-branded Peloton bikes on the sidelines at Michigan Stadium and in other U-M training facilities. Wolverines AD Warde Manuel: “We’re pleased to partner with Peloton as its first collegiate activation. We look forward to collaborating with Peloton and LEARFIELD on projects ranging from beneficial opportunities for our student-athletes to enhanced membership possibilities and content for the entire U-M community.” (link)

Panini responds to the NFLPA’s decision to end its trading card deal three years early: “We believe this was a totally unwarranted and improper action by the NFL Players Association in conjunction with Fanatics, especially in light of unprecedented sales by Panini of NFL trading cards. Panini has grown the category of sports trading cards by over 1000% since 2009, to the benefit of all concerned. We believe the only party who benefits from this action is Fanatics, and not the players, the leagues or consumers. We note that in addition to the [NFLPA], Panini has licenses with the NFL and over 360 individual players. Panini will honor all of its contractual obligations.” Action Network’s Darren Rovell: “Panini does in fact have contracts with 360 players, but companies that don’t have group licensing rights, as the union asserts they no longer have, cannot produce product with more than five players. Panini can have those players autograph items, but their contracts don’t act as a separate agreement to be able to put them on licensed cards.” (link)

Dick’s Sporting Goods missed earnings expectations for the first time in three years, posting a net income of $244M in Q2 ($2.82 a share) down from $3.25 a share a year earlier. Adjusted per-share earnings also came to $2.80, below the $3.81 FactSet consensus. CEO Lauren Hobart: “While we posted another double-digit EBT margin, our [second quarter] profitability was short of our expectations due in large part to the impact of elevated inventory shrink, an increasingly serious issue impacting many retailers. … Based on the results from our most recent physical inventory cycle, the impact of theft on our shrink was meaningful to both our Q2 results and our go forward expectations for the balance of the year.” Sales rose 3.6% to $3.224B from $3.112B a year ago. Texas has received a $10M gift from longtime supporters Lois and Richard Folger to endow the AD position. Per UT’s release, the “Lois and Richard Folger Athletics Director Endowment will provide perpetual flexible funding for non-salaried strategic use, empowering the athletics director to launch new initiatives and enhance the excellence of Texas Athletics for years to come.” UT President Jay Hartzell: “We are extremely grateful for the Folgers’ longstanding generosity to the University and excited to see how Chris Del Conte will utilize these resources strategically to improve the support of our student-athletes, generate more passion for our University across the student body, position our former student-athletes for post-UT success, and provide a laboratory for our students and faculty with interests in sports.” (link)

Illinois State Interim AD Jeri Beggs will likely remain in the role for the foreseeable future, noting ISU Interim President Aondover Tarhule has agreed to allow her to stay in the post through June 2024. Beggs: “I’m actually willing to stay as long as they want me to. I wasn’t sure if I would like the job or if I would be able to do the job. But I think it’s going great and I’m loving it. So I’m willing to stay as long as they need me. … There has been some interest in even actually getting to the point where we have a permanent president before we hire an AD. So I think we’re pushing the AD search back a little bit time wise. Both of us being interim is a little unusual so I think that would actually work out well.” Beggs also notes the department is in the process of hiring a Deputy AD for External Operations. (link)

Illinois Chancellor Robert Jones joins WCIA’s Bret Beherns to talk about UI athletics and says Congress is likely needed to set some guardrails for college sports because “it’s hard to figure out how we get there in an environment around antitrust unless there's some Congressional intervention and clarity about what the rules are and what they are and what there aren’t. … There are about six or seven different bills floating out there, and I can tell you some of them are quite encouraging and some of them are quite troubling. So, that’s the issue. Everybody sees NIL differently depending on their perspective and what laws are being passed or attempting to be passed in their state. So, it really needs to have more regulation and more control in order for a NIL to be effective in what it was originally supposed to do, and that is to make sure that our student-athletes are benefiting from their name, image and likeness.” Full conversation. Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde ranks the Most Intriguing People in Suits ahead of the 2023 football season and starts with ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, who Forde notes has “his hands full navigating the next year.” Phillips is followed by Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark, Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti, Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff, U.S. Integrity CEO Matt Holt, NCAA President Charlie Baker, ESPN President of Content Burke Magnus and Fox Sports CEO Eric Shanks, Florida State AD Michael Alford and several others. Lots more. (link)

Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock talks about the Hokies’ approach to NIL and points out that pursuing players who are seeking the best NIL deal is likely a fool’s errand, as those players are likely to transfer down the line. Ultimately, Babcock notes that “if all you have is NIL but you don't have traditional recruiting, it's probably not going to work; but if all you have is traditional recruiting without NIL, that's probably not going to work. … While we will still renovate and have great facilities, I do think with the NIL piece that it will perhaps slow down that arms race. In the NFL, for example, our indoor practice facility is better than an NFL one. The weight room is probably better than at that level. They pay the players, and I've never yet heard a free agent in any professional sports saying that they went somewhere for the facilities. So, we're not pro sports but it's starting to move in that direction, and educating our donors on those same things that they're used to, that this is a way to directly help the young people and, quite frankly, help us win games and they all want that.” More from Babcock and Hokies Football HC Brent Pry. Rocky Top Notes…
+ Tennessee AD Danny White responds to remarks made by Virginia Football HC Tony Elliott who suggested he turned down the Vols’ HC post when UT hired current HC Josh Heupel. Elliott is quoted as saying: “It just wasn't the right time for me. So when it came down to it, I prayed about it. ... So it was close. But at the end of the day when I looked at the totality of everything, it just wasn't the right time and fit for me." White responds via Twitter: “Interesting…don’t remember offering. Ignored this the first time, can’t do it again. An interview doesn’t constitute an offer. Interviewed several candidates, offered 1." (link)
+ White also talks with the UT Daily Beacon about his decision to come to Knoxville and explains: “The fact that this iconic brand was a little tarnished made it more attractive to me. I've always been more attracted to building things. You could say you want to build something. If there's no potential there, then you're going to be beating your head against the wall. I thought there was a lot of potential and I'm learning that there's even more than I realized.” In addition to projects at Neyland Stadium and Lindsey Nelson Stadium, White says the Vols have “a lot of exciting plans for Thompson-Boling Arena that we'll be ready to talk about here more publicly pretty soon. I'm excited about the future of that building. I think it's gonna be special.” (link)

+ Tarleton State breaks ground on a $110M, 148K-sq-ft multipurpose arena that will feature basketball facilities and room for academic convocations, symposiums, conferences and conventions. The venue will seat nearly 10K for concerts and 8K for basketball games. Texans AD Lonn Reisman: “This event center will expand Tarleton's brand, not just in Texas, it will expand it across the United States of America. Tarleton State is getting noticed more and more on a national scale every day, as is the city of Stephenville. When prospective student-athletes visit our campus, they see the commitment and the investment Tarleton State has made in every area of athletics." (link)
+ North Dakota breaks ground on the Nodak Insurance Company Sports Performance Center, which will house UND’s athletic offices, a weight room, a sports medicine area and locker rooms for football, softball and men's and women's cross country and track and field. Fighting Hawks AD Bill Chaves: “This is something that needed to take place for a day-to-day basis for almost two-thirds of our student-athletes. For them to come every day to a premier facility to hone their skills is incredibly important." Chaves also notes UND is still eying construction of a mixed-use facility, but “we’re not necessarily there yet to be able to announce anything. But I think it's fair to say, if you look at our visuals of our master plan, you'd see it there.” (link)
+ City officials in Fargo City today unveiled a projected $140M renovation to the Fargodome, home of North Dakota State football. The renovation also includes a convention center addition that could benefit the Bison, Inforum’s Jeff Kolpack reports. To fund the project, officials are proposing using $30M from the dome’s surplus fund along with a one-fourth-cent sales tax and a 3% lodging tax which will be voted on in a special election set for December 5. The vote would require a 60% majority for passage. Fargodome GM Rob Sobolik says adding 5-10K seats to prep for a potential move to FBS would be cost-prohibitive, so “if we can’t do that, then we want the amenities. We want the space for people to move. We want the circulation, more restaurants, accessible seating, the variety of the food and beverages, the variety of the seating areas for people to go to.” (link)

The Atlantic Sun will begin exploring neutral-site options for future men’s and women’s hoops championships. Commissioner Jeff Bacon: “The timing is right for us to go out and take a look at what options might exist to elevate the championship experience that we provide for our Men’s and Women’s Basketball student-athletes. When we consider the ASUN footprint and the major markets that we occupy, with a reach of over 16M homes, we owe it to our institutions to thoroughly examine what a neutral-site championship would look like.” (link)

The Ole Miss-focused Grove Collective raised $1.7M for NIL deals on the first day of its Grove Collection Week, according to Executive Director Walker Jones, who tells On3’s Andy Wittry: “We’ve seen some sports stay steady from a cost perspective. Some have a modest increase but nothing shocking. So probably all in all, a five or 10% increase over that original number but pretty much the same neighborhood. … I probably would say the sport that had the biggest increase has been baseball. I think baseball was probably the sport where the values were a little bit higher than what I expected.” (link)
