The Empire 8 will add SUNY Brockport and SUNY Geneseo from the SUNYAC starting in 2024-25. The additions expand the E8 membership to 11 schools. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s Cory Hogue pens on the possible future for the ASC pointing to sources who say Commissioner David Flores met with leaders from the remaining institutions last week and “little was done to alleviate those concerned about the ASC’s direction and future.” On rumblings of a merger or alliance with the SCIAC or C2C, Hogue notes such a move could lead to East Texas Baptist or Howard Payne exiting for another league. INFLCR Founder Jim Cavale and former Penn/NFL linebacker Brandon Copeland have launched Athletes.org, a free membership organization open to all student-athletes that provides on-demand support as they navigate college experience. The platform also serves as a way to discuss the future of college sports. On3’s Pete Nakos explains that student-athletes who join “will have access to ask any question to the app, interact with a pro bono expert and view a registry of AO-verified agents and collectives. While AO is not a union, it does aim to educate athletes on the current issues facing college sports and create chapters based on sports and conferences. Cavale: “There are a lot of things happening in college sports. NIL and the transfer portal are only the beginning of where we are headed. There have been associations for the colleges, coaches and even the athletic directors for a long time. It’s a time where athletes need to finally have their own association.” Cavale also points out that AO is a nonprofit entity and is funded by a group of strategic partners. From yesterday’s NSIC (DII) Congressional Engagement Listening Session, NCAA President Charlie Baker and Senator John Thune (R-SD) agreed with the desire for federal legislation to avoid pay for play and student-athletes being classified as employees, preempt state legislation and create an NIL registry. Baker is hopeful for an NCAA and federal solution to be passed this year regarding recruitment and transparency, adding that he believes the dust will settle and noise will clear some on the transfer portal issues as student-athletes will be able to conduct a more normal recruiting cycle and visits and: “We’re going to end up with something that looks a little more like a federation and less like everyone playing under the same rules for everyone.” (link, link, link - full session) More comments:

+ Southwestern Minnesota State (DII) AD Jennifer Flowers on the reality for employment: “The impact that it will have on Olympic sports, women’s sports. We just celebrated 50 years of Title IX, and all of that progress in my opinion will be defeated instantaneously if we go to an employment model. There’s not a financial model, at least that our institution right now can come up with, that would have any chance of supporting our student-athletes being employees.”

+ Augustana (DII) Volleyball student-athlete Erika Bute: “My sport is so much more than just about making money; it’s about other opportunities, too. As a female athlete, Title IX has given us so many incredible opportunities, and it could be frustrating if we implement something that disrupts that progress.”

+ Concordia-St. Paul (DII) Football student-athlete Davaris Cheeks voiced concerns about NIL opportunities being “taken away before we really even have the chance to take advantage of those,” the possibility of being terminated as an employee and the state employment and minimum wage differences that would be critical if such a model were instituted.

+ Summit League (DI) Commissioner Josh Fenton: “I’m concerned that we’re starting to untether the components of that multifaceted experience. I think our inflexibility of our structure, how we are structured as college sports, is preventing us from making decisions on what’s in the true best interest of our student-athletes. Much of the challenges that we’re in, legal in particular, realignment decisions, significant decision a couple weeks ago that you’re all aware of, primarily being driven by the economics at the highest level. […] At the end of the day, it’s about their experience. We’re in the human development business and so if we can't address our industry, Divisions I, II and III, then we’ve lost sight of what we’ve been for many decades and I’m concerned and a little nervous that we’re starting to teeter on the edge of untethering that multifaceted curricular experience.”

Penn State Altoona will grow its department to 17 with the addition of Women’s Golf in 2024-25. AD Brent Baird: “We have had several women compete as individuals over the past years, but now we are going to offer it up as a team sport. This is another opportunity to support women's athletics at Penn State Altoona. We have had an exceptional men's program for a long time, and I look forward to developing a women's team that will become a regional contender.” (link)
