In discussing realignment with Midco Sports’ Jay Elsen, NCAA President Charlie Baker notes that “several college presidents basically said they didn't want to do it but felt like they had to because of the money that was involved. I really hope everybody figures out a way to make sure that if, in fact, they did it because they thought they had to that they make sure that student-athletes, who now may be playing on a much bigger playing field geographically, don't lose their ability to be student-athletes because of that decision.” Asked whether the NCAA is sustainable in its current form, Baker says: “If you leave it exactly the way it is, probably not. … I think the thing we have to do is accept the fact that times are changing…and we need to be up for the challenge. You can’t sit back on your heels and expect to do the same thing tomorrow that you did yesterday. We need to continue to anticipate where the future’s going and make changes to accommodate student-athletes and the schools that participate in going forward. If we don't do that, we're not serving the folks we should be looking after and taking care of.” (link)

From Tuesday’s NSIC (DII) Congressional Engagement Listening Session, NCAA President Charlie Baker and Senator John Thune (R-SD) agreed with the desire for federal legislation to avoid pay for play and student-athletes being classified as employees, preempt state legislation and create an NIL registry. Baker is hopeful for an NCAA and federal solution to be passed this year regarding recruitment and transparency, adding that he believes the dust will settle and noise will clear some on the transfer portal issues as student-athletes will be able to conduct a more normal recruiting cycle and visits and: “We’re going to end up with something that looks a little more like a federation and less like everyone playing under the same rules for everyone.” Summit League Commissioner Josh Fenton: “I’m concerned that we’re starting to untether the components of that multifaceted experience. I think our inflexibility of our structure, how we are structured as college sports, is preventing us from making decisions on what’s in the true best interest of our student-athletes. Much of the challenges that we’re in, legal in particular, realignment decisions, significant decision a couple weeks ago that you’re all aware of, primarily being driven by the economics at the highest level. We should celebrate the economics. They should celebrate the economics at the highest level, but we can’t lose sight of the tethered multifaceted curricular experience that makes college athletics so great.” More. (link)

The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel crunches the numbers and calculates that if “Stanford and Cal are willing to initially take 30% and SMU zero, that would leave a pool of $74M in found money to distribute to the current [ACC] schools, not even including a likely gain in ACC Network subscriber fees in San Francisco and Dallas. If split equally among all 14 full members, that number barely moves the needle, especially given the schools will need to turn around and spend some of it on charter flights to the Bay Area. But the model being dangled in front of the four holdouts would disperse that money based on performance, per The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach, whether that’s on the field, in the Nielsen ratings or both. … So, all Florida State has to do is win at the same stratospheric level as its sense of self-importance, and there might be enough new money to shut its mouth for the time being. Plus keep Clemson happy as well.” (link)

Washington State President Kirk Schulz last week directed the WSU Athletics Advisory Committee to review three different conference affiliation options, including applying for membership in the Mountain West, applying for membership in the AAC, and possibly expanding membership in the existing Pac‑12. Schulz and Cougars AD Pat Chun will use the committee’s responses to help craft a recommendation for the WSU Board of Regents to review. The board is expected to decide on conference affiliation in the coming weeks. The committee is considering the following criteria as it evaluates WSU’s options: university visibility, competitiveness, student-athlete experience, travel stability and financial sustainability. Texas A&M AD Ross Bjork dismisses the notion that Football HC Jimbo Fisher is in jeopardy of losing his job, telling ESPN’s Chris Low: “There's no panic here. You can't be a blow-by-the-wind program in how you make decisions and expect to win championships in the SEC. Sure, last year was disappointing for all of us, but I look at where we're headed, and so does Jimbo. … The expectations are what they are. It's the SEC. We all have those expectations, but what I look at is what we're doing to build for the future. We're recruiting at a level we've never recruited at before. Our fans are stepping up and continuing to invest in the program. I'm excited about what comes next and not worrying about one bad season." (link)

Yesterday's Evening Standard...

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports the “potential additions of Cal, Stanford and SMU to the ACC are again under serious consideration by the league. A small group of ACC presidents met Wednesday morning to discuss financial models that would come with the additions. Those models are expected to include significant financial concessions from the school that will be added. More meetings are expected this week. Just one vote is needed among the block of UNC, NC State, Clemson and Florida State to get the three new schools in, assuming all the yes votes are in agreement with the financial arrangements. A realistic timeline for a decision is about one week. There’s expected to be a pool of money created from these additions, and the ACC presidents are discussing how the money would be split. The mechanics of that are still to be worked out, including a performance pool for success initiatives. The concessions expected from SMU include a willingness to take no broadcast media revenue for the first seven years they are in the league. Stanford and Cal would both receive the same share, which will both be reduced but different in form than SMU's concessions.” (link)

Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick tells Dan Patrick that “I don’t know if it was particularly close, but if we hadn’t been able to find a home for our Olympic sports with the ACC, maintaining football independence would have been problematic. We needed a partner who would allow our Olympic sports to participate at the level we want them to.” Asked if the Irish might join the ACC at some point in football, Swarbrick replied that “all the major conferences are a possibility”, and noted that if NBC doesn’t extend the current TV deal at a higher price and “if we didn’t have somebody else that was willing to step up,” then Notre Dame would, in fact, join a conference. The current college sports landscape is a “complete disaster,” Swarbrick continued, adding that “everybody in the industry has to take responsibility here. I’m not excluding myself from that. I think the decision-making has lost its way in terms of the focus on the student athlete and what’s primarily best for them. But we are where we are, and we have to try to make it work.” On whether this is the end of the Pac-12, Swarbrick acknowledged that it’s “looking that way more & more every day, yes.” On Stanford and Cal: “You can’t have two of the great academic institutions in the world not have a place to play. We’re working on (a solution). There’s still consideration of the ACC as a home for those schools.” (link, link)

Wake Forest AD John Currie covers several topics on the Ovies + Giglio show, including the travel considerations associated with adding Stanford and Cal. Currie points out that by and large all road trips for the Demon Deacons are plane trips. “So, the facts are that if you add one or two West Coast schools – and, again, those are presidential-level conversations – but just looking at it on the surface…you're looking at a football program that’s going to go out there once every four years. We're already out there back and forth – you know I can't remember the numbers – but it's seven or eight of our teams are out there last year in that vicinity and then if you look at other places you know that's part of the deal. I don’t minimize that, though. It takes creativity and it takes planning, and that’ll continue to be part of the enterprise.” Currie goes on to note that overall, “you’ve got to look at these things as short-term and long-term. What’s the effect of not making decisions to expand, which may be the right decisions? What’s the effect of making those decisions? Some will be evident immediately. Some won't be evident for three or four or five or 10 years or whatever. So,I think you’ve got to look at the big picture of strength and where you want to be down the road.” Full podcast. (link)

INFLCR Founder Jim Cavale and former Penn/NFL linebacker Brandon Copeland have launched Athlete.org, a free membership organization open to all student-athletes that provides on-demand support as they navigate college experience. The platform also serves as a way to discuss the future of college sports. On3’s Pete Nakos explains that student-athletes who join “will have access to ask any question to the app, interact with a pro bono expert and view a registry of AO-verified agents and collectives. While AO is not a union, it does aim to educate athletes on the current issues facing college sports and create chapters based on sports and conferences. Cavale: “There are a lot of things happening in college sports. NIL and the transfer portal are only the beginning of where we are headed. There have been associations for the colleges, coaches and even the athletic directors for a long time. It’s a time where athletes need to finally have their own association.” Cavale also points out that AO is a nonprofit entity and is funded by a group of strategic partners. Cavale declined to identify any partners other than On3. Lots more. (link, link)

Looney points out that UNA does plan on maximizing the revenue generation at Bank Independent Stadium by hosting concerts and other events and tells Eargle: “This is going to be designed to be far more than athletics. It needs to boost and raise the profile of our institution. We are a music community [in Muscle Shoals]. We need to design it in a way where we can host concerts, and it needs to be far more than five Saturdays a year for football. And that's the awesome thing when you can have a transformational project like that that’s not just impacting your university but your entire community.” Full Q&A on Connect. (link)

A lot of players might not play at the same level they played the year before, or another player might just have played flat-out better than them. You have a fair shot to go out there and do your thing, play better than you did last year. You have the same shot as anybody else, but you just have to go out there and do it.” (link)

I just feel like it’s a little bit harsh to me personally, and just I’m hopeful that they’ll reconsider his case. I know he bet on one of our other sports teams here, and I understand that may be a bad thing. He bet for them, and I’m guessing he got caught up in the emotion.” (link)
