Eastern Nazarene is the last full member to exit the NECC, departing to become the 14th member in the NAC. ENC AD Zarges: "The invitation to join the NAC is one that ENC Athletics eagerly accepted and we look forward to working alongside member schools immediately in 2023-24,. Among a long list of reasons that membership in the NAC became so appealing, two stand out: first, Commissioner Zalot's leadership, along with the collegiality of the athletic administrators, has established clear vision for the conference that is student-athlete centered. Second, the alignment of sport sponsorship allows all but one of our programs to compete in the NAC, allowing ENC to move forward with our strategic goal of comprehensive competitiveness." (link)

SBJ’s Madkour profiles incoming NCAA President Baker to get a sense of what to expect when he officially takes over and observes: “Charlie Baker is a no-nonsense doer who recruits talented people, loves the ‘how’ of policy as much as the ‘why,’ and leans in on the ‘gnarly stuff’ of problem solving. It’s based around his operating philosophy: ‘People are Policy — Follow the Facts — Focus on How — Push for Results.’” Madkour, who read Baker’s book, Results: Getting Beyond Politics To Get Important Work Done, and also spent time with Baker via Zoom last month, also points out that in hiring, “Baker looks for people who aren’t ‘interested in making things just 5% better but dramatically better.’ He wants ‘no jerks,’ but ‘strong personalities, commanding presence, and smart as hell — check a big YES on all three. But no loudmouths, know-it-alls and over-the-top arrogance.’” More. (link)

The NCAA releases a primer for this week’s Convention in San Antonio as VP McCleary chats with media headliner Katz on what DIII attendees can expect. McCleary on the key topics administrators will discuss: “What many I think across the entire association is facing is declining enrollments and declining budgets – that will be a hot topic. Those are two of our education sessions – one is how do you address those declining enrollments? What role does athletics play for the health and wellness of the entire institution? And the other is attracting, recruiting and retaining administrators in Division III. We’ve gotten close to a crisis level with finding athletics trainers and that’s at the core of any athletics department, so our delegates will be focused on those types of conversations.” More. Maine Maritime will reinstate FB as a sub-varsity program for the 2023 and 2024 seasons before transitioning to the CCC as an affiliate member for the 2025 campaign. The program was initially suspended in August 2020. The Academy received more than $560K in financial support, including $250K from the Harold Alfond Foundation. AD Peed: “The restoration of football really ends the pandemic-footing we have been standing on in this department for too long and makes us whole again. I am excited to shift from the fundraising phase and into the phase of rebuilding the program into something our alumni will be proud of and into a point of pride for the campus and Castine communities.” (link)

Concordia Chicago postponed multiple games and suspended MBB HC Kollar following the hospitalization of five student-athletes from a practice that some allege was punishment for S-As breaking curfew on a recent road trip. As university officials investigate the incident, AD Gnan notes: “Our athletics program has zero tolerance for harassment or retaliatory actions of any kind, and reporting mechanisms are in place for students, coaches and related staff.” AC Surles is serving as acting HC. Ten Albion MBB student-athletes refused to suit up for Saturday’s home game, alleging that HC May uttered a racial slur multiple times as he repeated the words of one student-athlete during an explanation for why that individual was kicked out of a practice. Per notes from one S-A, on May not addressing the team immediately: “I was shocked that a man in his position didn't know what to do after saying the most derogatory, disrespectful and belittling word.” Also from S-A notes: “As an African-American, it is demeaning to hear the (slur) come from a white male in a position of power. For most of the team, it was the first time they had heard a white person use the word in general. It was devastating to hear it come from our head coach who we work hard for everyday to gain his respect and approval. We are emotionally impacted by this event as student athletes and as human beings. We are embarrassed to play for a man who displays this type of behavior and embarrassed to play for a school that would allow this type of behavior from a man in Coach May’s position.” Some team members want May removed from his position, while the school has reinstated him after a multi-game suspension and orders to undergo sensitivity training. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Women’s S&D student-athlete Johnson decries Scripps’ housing of student-athletes off campus during break, depriving them of rest, recovery and bonding time with their Claremont and Harvey Mudd teammates who are provided on-campus residence. Johnson recounts that she and her teammates attempted to address the issue in mid-November, but were given the run-around by administrators. While noting that CMS AD Jasper was “extremely helpful,” Johnson asserts that Scripps administration risks “decreasing their already dwindling number of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps student-athletes unless they start listening to us, including us in problem-solving conversations and being transparent with us.” (link)

With Castleton FB slated to join the MASCAC in 2024, the Rutland Herald turns its attention to scheduling matters, particularly the likelihood that schools will only be able to schedule one non-conference game. Castleton currently has two trophy games – the Maple Sap Bucket vs Norwich and the Helmet Trophy vs Anna Maria – one of which may get squeezed out, if a round-robin league slate requires nine games. Westfield State AD Caspole, who may have to choose between playing Western New England and Anna Maria, expects that to indeed be the case: “That is the way conferences are evolving right now. It is tough to pick up non-league games.” (link)

Fitchburg State names Elmhurst AC Shaw as FB HC. FSU AD Burke: “Zach was well received by our campus during his visit. I was impressed with how he understands the big picture and the small nuances with regards to what it takes to build a solid foundation for a football program and look forward to watching him develop our current student-athletes.” (link)

Sportico’s McCann makes five predictions about how sports law will be impacted in 2023, starting with the potential classification of student-athletes as employees. “Expect new bills in Congress and at the state level to recognize college athletes as employees. They’ll attract headlines but will face long odds. The true wild card would be if the NCAA, under new president Charlie Baker, voluntarily declares that college athletes at major programs are employees. Don’t bank on it. While Baker is more open to change than his predecessors, he’s also a realist and is unlikely to clash so quickly with those who put him in power.” Regarding NIL, McCann expects more of the same, with the line between NIL and pay-for-play remaining all but gone. “Members of Congress will continue to propose NIL bills, but to date, no NIL bill has made it out of committee. In short, NIL in 2023 will probably look a lot like NIL in 2022.” (link)
