The San Jose Mercury News’ Jon Wilner & JohnCanzano.com’s namesake discuss the AD opening at Washington. Wilner: “Jen Cohen is leaving with the foundation in place. Football is right and she’s got UW in the Big Ten. But, they still need somebody that is highly competent to get through this transition phase so they can be ready to thrive when they get into the Big Ten. It’s a giant loss and it’s a really good hire for USC. SC is getting an A-level administrator who understands football, which is a giant thing. [...] They will have an excellent candidate pool, partly because of the Big Ten. [...] I think there’s a bunch of names that we could throw out, one that I’m watching is Terry Tumey at Fresno State as he hired Kalen DeBoer. I think he’s going to have a significant voice in this hire. He’s going to want someone who he can work with, who understands football. Tumey played football at UCLA. I don’t know their working relationship during DeBoer’s two years at Fresno, but I have to think that if it’s a good working relationship, Tumey is going to get a long, hard look.” Canzano goes on to say he “wouldn’t be surprised if Washington kicks the tires on Oregon State AD Scott Barnes.” Lots more on west coast conference realignment, the future College Football Playoff structure, etc. (link)

Oregon State’s Board of Trustees released an updated outline of priorities for athletics, which notably includes “Champion the ability for OSU student-athletes to compete at the highest level possible. Power 5 conference membership.” Additional areas of focus: 1) Holistic development of student-athletes to support athletic & academic goals; 2) Provide best experience for alumni and fans; 3) Creative visibility for the institution regionally & nationally; and, 4) Maximize resources. Lots more detail for each area in the full deck. (link)

“The Big 12 is a good brand. We’re not going to re-name it. We might re-brand it, but I think everybody feels pretty about what the Big 12 means. The Big 12 still has a lot of cachet to it, particularly the last couple of years. So I think that is going to stay. I don’t see us re-naming the conference now. It’s just too good and strong of a brand. People recognize it.” That’s Kansas State AD Gene Taylor on the potential for branding changes for the Big 12. More from Taylor: “You may see some stuff a little bit this year kind of indicating the direction. I have seen a few things. Bigger than 12 is a theme. I think you will see some things, particularly this fall from the Big 12 that give you an indication of the thought process of why we’re keeping the Big 12 name, even though we’re going to be 16 teams.” (link)

The college football season will finally kick-off today when Notre Dame & Navy meet in Dublin. On Location EVP for College & Anthony Travel’s namesake founder John Anthony on the Fighting Irish’s support of the event: “They’ve put a lot of resources and energy into it. Their opinion was if they’re going to move a home game out of South Bend and into Dublin, then it’s still going to be a Notre Dame home game and they get those benefits out of it.” Anthony also indicates a U.S. Supreme Court justice (or two) may be in attendance, as well as members of Congress. (link); Meanwhile, the Fighting Irish have launched the Notre Dame Football NIL Fan Club alongside NBC Sports Athlete Direct. For $29.99 fans can get a cache of exclusive content. (link)

Memphis President Bill Hardgrave pens an op-ed for the Commercial Appeal in which he calls on the city and the fan base to seize this moment of conference realignment. “We have called on fans to join the Win Together promotion, which is a one-time ticket investment that nets participants a free ticket to the next game after each win. We also need supporters to show up for 901 Week as we showcase a strong, united force. Fan participation and television viewership are key factors in realignment discussions, and I’m grateful to each ticket holder and game-day viewer. … A lesser fan base might throw in the towel. But that’s not true for our base of supporters, nor is it the right strategy for the university. When I joined U of M a year ago, the shared dynamic between our city and the university drew me: Folks come to Memphis to be somebody and they give very little regard to naysayers. … Every Memphis supporter, fan, and alum has a role to play.” (link)

SIU Edwardsville AD Andrew Gavin introduces to fans the department’s new values, known as the Cougar Core, which he shared with all student-athletes earlier in the week. These include Commitment (be committed to all aspects of your experience as a student-athlete), Optimism (bring positive energy and be solution-oriented), Unity (teams are more successful when united), Growth (grow and develop in and out of your sport), Appreciation (congratulate each other, show gratitude, say thank you) and Resilience (grow through our mistakes and losses. Outwork our opponents). Gavin: “When I arrived at SIUE, I arrived with the priority of guiding our collective mindset and culture collectively to achieve success. Success in and out of competition. Success as both individuals and teams, and as coaches and staff. Success as an athletics department, as a campus, and broadly as a community of fans, alumni, and supporters.” (link)

+ North Dakota announces plans for Memorial Village II, which will include a new softball stadium for the Fighting Hawks. The Nodak Insurance Company Sports Performance Center, UND Athletics, the City of Grand Forks, the Memorial Village Development Group and a generous gift from lead donors Alexa and Dave Albrecht have all partnered together to bring UND softball back to campus through a public-private partnership. Memorial Village II will be across the street from Memorial Village and provide commercial space and mixed-living opportunities for Grand Forks. The stadium, which is slated to be completed by fall 2024, will feature over 500 spectator seats, a special party deck in left field, a LED videoboard and will be pet friendly. Shovels are scheduled to hit the ground October 3. (link)
+ Auburn announces the addition of 20+ enhancements to Jordan-Hare Stadium for this season, including increasing capacity from 88,043 to 87,451 thanks to “several new premium seating options.” Additionally, there will be Grab-N-Go Concessions and Express Marketplaces, stadium-wide Wi-Fi improvements, new play clocks, LED lighting at the team’s tunnel entrance and pyro and smoke effects. There will also be a DJ booth at the center of the student section. Lots more. (link)

In addition to announcing a new game day student-athlete availability report for all football competition this season, the Big Ten has partnered with U.S. Integrity to enhance sports wagering monitoring efforts. Commissioner Tony Petitti: “The well-being of our students, coaches, and staff, as well as the integrity of our competitions are of paramount importance. Enhanced transparency through availability reporting and partnering with U.S. Integrity strengthens our efforts to protect those who participate in our games as well as the integrity of the games themselves. I’m grateful for the collaboration of our schools, coaches, and administrators.” (link)

According to data from the Department of Education, Kentucky has a $2.3M recruiting budget for its men’s basketball program, compared to that of Morehead State, which is located an hour outside of Lexington and enjoys a $110K recruiting budget. ESPN’s Myron Medcalf dives into the disadvantages faced by the smaller budget schools, especially with the travel required of the transfer portal. NIL issues are also a factor, as North Carolina Central MBB HC LeVelle Moton points out “The one thing I’ve learned is that you can’t out-recruit money.” South Alabama HC Richie Riley: “We try to evaluate, at the front end of recruiting, what their driving force is. If it's about the money, then it's hard to get those guys to come here. But if it's about increasing their role dramatically and giving themselves a chance to make more money on the back end with being a professional basketball player, [we have a better chance].” More strategies from coaches on how to maximize their dollars. Everyone would love to do more stories, but they just don’t have the time or the resources. So we pitched it to them as a tool that empowers their staff to get more of a break and simplify their lives." (link)

Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart agrees to a two-year extension through June 2028. Barnhart’s base salary will remain unchanged; however, the “retention incentives for the athletics director reflect changes of $100K in the first year with $50K increases in the two years subsequent. Other performance incentives – for academic and athletic metrics – would not change.” Also, beginning July 1, 2026, Barnhart could, with six months’ notice, elect to step down from the post, at which time he would assume the position of Special Assistant to President Eli Capilouto for two years at a reduced salary of $800K annually.” Capilouto: “We have, in my judgment, the nation’s best athletics director. Continuing that leadership at such a critical juncture and ensuring ongoing stability amidst so much change is the right thing to do for UK Athletics. It’s the right thing to do for the University of Kentucky.” (link)

More from LEAD1 CEO Tom McMillen, who acknowledges to On3’s Eric Prisbell that the latest round of realignment does not help the NCAA’s efforts to lobby Congress for a federal bill. “The NCAA should give any kid that wants to transfer in these realignments, they should allow it to happen. They need to give them mobility to move to another situation, even if they don’t have any transfer ability left. They’ve got to do some things like that to even the playing field.” Without a federal law, Prisbell asks how the NCAA could reconcile its differences with the myriad state laws, and McMillen explains: “It goes back to the Dormant Commerce Clause. … The Supreme Court ruled that an association needs to be able to have established rules and regulations. So, if you’re a school and want to challenge the NCAA, you’re going to be left on the sidelines for an extended period of time. Let me also say this, the CFP (College Football Playoff), if you look into their bylaws, I haven’t seen it but I am aware that their bylaws require compliance with conference and NCAA rules. It is just obvious. How can you have a football championship if the Green Bay Packers are going to come in and play in it? There are rules and regulations.” On the topic of revenue-sharing, McMIllen calls for a bifurcation of college sports to differentiate the high-revenue schools from the others but acknowledges that “how you get there is not easy. Because you do have Title IX. So, if you give $1M to football players, you have to give $1M to women athletes. It’s kind of a Rubik’s Cube. But it will have to be addressed.” Lots more in a wide-ranging interview. (link)
|
Knight Commission member/former Northeastern AD Peter Roby on the impact realignment is going to have on student-athletes: “No one can argue that it’s in the best interest of all the students that participate in college athletics at those institutions because other than football and maybe men’s and women’s basketball, all those other teams will have to fly commercial, which means they’ll have much longer trips, will miss more class time, the wear and tear on them emotionally, physically, mentally will be much more intense, and it's not going to be in their best interest. What we should be committed to in college athletics, as administrators and educators, is trying to achieve the highest goals but always doing it on behalf of the students that we work with and not at their expense…and no matter how much money you're going to end up making at the end of the day, this is not in those students’ best interests.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake reports that Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez and New Mexico President Garnett Stokes’ pitch to Washington State highlighted the league’s linear distribution deal with CBS and Fox, which expires in 2026 and therefore provides an upcoming window in which to negotiate. Canzano also reports the Pac-12 stands to make more than $50M from the NCAA Tournament over the next six years and that money will be shared among remaining conference members. Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff tells Canzano: “I see no reason why they would share those with any incoming schools.” Also from Canzano: “Another Pac-12 asset includes ‘equivalency’ payments due to the conference from the Rose Bowl settlement. The $50M payout this season will be split evenly among the 12 conference schools. There is another $100M combined due to the Pac-12 members in 2024 and 2025. Insiders expect there could be a legal fight over whether the $100 million belongs to the remaining two/four members or if those payments should be divided among the 12 current schools. Stay tuned on that front.” Lots more. (link)

Big Ten Special Adviser for Football and former Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez will no longer serve in the role with the conference, stating: “I talked to the new commissioner and we talked about it a little bit, but he has his people and I understand that. I don’t have any problem with that.” (link)

Look like the Big Ten is headed toward mandatory injury reports two hours before each football kickoff. The Pioneer Press’ Andy Greder was first with the news & indicated a league vote is still needed. More from Saturday Tradition, though no details yet on what the injury reports would have to include. (link)

Tulsa AD Rick Dickson addresses the current state of the athletic department and says: “I can feel movement, and it’s not everything going by us. It’s us moving forward, and that’s really important to me.” Dickson also talks about his experience managing crises, such as Hurricane Katrina and COVID, and says: “[I’ve] always kind of looked at things as being that person – I can't remember who it was was, a mom or somebody influential – said to me, ‘Look, two things can happen when you when you walk up on a train wreck. You can either get overwhelmed and become nauseous at what's happened or you can roll up your sleeves and start repairing and healing. And I've always felt more comfortable and adept at the second, rolling up the sleeves and going to work.” (link)

ESPN College GameDay is changing theme songs after 16 years of Big and Rich’s “Comin’ to Your City,” per Messrs. Big and Rich themselves. The Big Lead’s Kyle Koster reports an announcement regarding a new theme song has yet to be made, but “whatever it ends up being will have big shoes to fill. ‘Comin' to Your City’ was a song that became an elite jingle that got stuck in heads. It is profoundly fun to sing the chorus and say, ‘If you wanna little zing in your zang zang, if you wanna little ting in your tang tang.’ Heavy is the crown of responsibility kicking off a premier property like this, but there's something exciting about the unknown and learning to love a new soundtrack.” (link)

NBC is “commanding north of $100,000 for each 30-second ad unit” for its Saturday night Big Ten football matchups, “similar to the going rate for time in the network’s NFL lead-in, Football Night in America,” Sportico’s Anthony Crupi reports. Crupi also notes NBC is investing in talent for the broadcasts, as analyst Todd Blackledge says he wasn’t necessarily looking to leave ESPN, but “just the actual contract that [NBC] ended up offering me in terms of compensation and length, at this point in my career and my life, it was too good for me to say no to.” (link)

Green Bay will be on probation through 2030-31 after failing to sponsor the DI-required 14 sports during the 2021-22 academic year. Since then, UWGB has brought its Men’s and Women’s Nordic Skiing program within the requirements with a full-time HC, reinstituted tuition waivers, a $150K donation to support the program and more. Moving forward, the university will expand its skiing rosters and add more tuition waivers for various sports to be well beyond the “‘floor’ of total athletic aid distributed annually.” Chancellor Mike Alexander: “We've been on probation the last three years now and no one's noticed - so it's not going to mean anything. What matters is that we are making progress and improving our athletic department. […] As the program I think starts to reemerge so to speak, we're gonna see a lot more attendance. We believe in our community and we want our community to believe in us. […] The perfect way to know we are succeeding is that when I walk around Green Bay, I see people wearing UW Green Bay Phoenix t-shirts, that it's something the community is proud of - that they're investing in.” (link, link)

U.S. Representatives Garret Graves (R-LA) and Mark Pocan (D-WI) announce the launch of the Historic Stadium Caucus, which will bring together a bipartisan group of federal lawmakers to “work on preserving the legacy and protecting the integrity of these treasured venues across America while enhancing their capabilities, so they are able to continue to host world-class sporting events and concerts for generations to come.” Pocan: “Historic stadiums, like Camp Randall Stadium where the University of Wisconsin-Madison Badgers play, serve a vital role in our communities. Not only are they where memories are made and young people get inspired to play sports, but they’re often hubs of economic activity. We must do everything we can to protect these iconic venues in our communities.” The caucus will initially focus on 18 historic college football venues ranging from the Yale Bowl to the Rose Bowl and work to ensure they receive safety and security enhancements, technological upgrades and funding for infrastructure updates.
