More from LEAD1 CEO Tom McMillen, who acknowledges to On3’s Eric Prisbell that the latest round of realignment does not help the NCAA’s efforts to lobby Congress for a federal bill. “The NCAA should give any kid that wants to transfer in these realignments, they should allow it to happen. They need to give them mobility to move to another situation, even if they don’t have any transfer ability left. They’ve got to do some things like that to even the playing field.” Without a federal law, Prisbell asks how the NCAA could reconcile its differences with the myriad state laws, and McMillen explains: “It goes back to the Dormant Commerce Clause. … The Supreme Court ruled that an association needs to be able to have established rules and regulations. So, if you’re a school and want to challenge the NCAA, you’re going to be left on the sidelines for an extended period of time. Let me also say this, the CFP (College Football Playoff), if you look into their bylaws, I haven’t seen it but I am aware that their bylaws require compliance with conference and NCAA rules. It is just obvious. How can you have a football championship if the Green Bay Packers are going to come in and play in it? There are rules and regulations.” On the topic of revenue-sharing, McMIllen calls for a bifurcation of college sports to differentiate the high-revenue schools from the others but acknowledges that “how you get there is not easy. Because you do have Title IX. So, if you give $1M to football players, you have to give $1M to women athletes. It’s kind of a Rubik’s Cube. Huntingdon will add Women’s Flag Football for competition beginning in 2024-25. President Cameron West: “Since our founding in 1854, Huntingdon has been at the forefront of advancing educational opportunities for women, including more recently such athletic programs as Lacrosse, Beach Volleyball, Cross Country, Golf, Track and Field, and Wrestling. Now, we build on that tradition with the introduction of Women's Flag Football.” The Hawks named Bethel (KS) (NAIA) HC Angela Rowe as the new program’s inaugural leader. (link)

RealResponse & U.S. Integrity launched an integrated solution giving athletic departments access to trained professionals in the sports wagering space through the RealResponse platform. Unlike the tip hotline they partnered on earlier this summer, the new gambling reporting tool is offered only to colleges and universities and is free for the more than 150 athletics departments that are clients of RealResponse. Key details from the AP: “When a report comes in, administrators can request U.S. Integrity investigators to assess, verify and route the report to appropriate authorities." (link)

The latest Candid Coaches series from CBS focuses on burnout and asks coaches whether they’ve experienced professional burnout in the past 12 months or so. 62% of coaches indicate they have not experienced burnout while 38% say they have. However, several HCs who answered “no” qualified their responses with one saying: “No, but I've enjoyed the job less than ever before. A combination of calendar never ends and portal/NIL factors." Another: “Not suffering from burnout, but I'm tired of too many non-basketball people offering opinions/suggestions about what the game and recruiting should be like. The recruiting schedule will never be convenient…also, this is what we signed up for when we decided to become coaches.” One coach who has experienced burnout remarks: “It is ridiculous. Complete unknown every day. ... The NCAA has zero concern for coaches and the reality is they are the ones who get the product to the floor." Another notes that “some wives have to feel like they're single parents with our calendars." Lots more. (link)
