Realignment Rumblings…
+ The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner and The Action Network’s Brett McMurphy assert previous news items concerning the remaining Pac-12 schools matriculating to the Big 12 are false. Wilner points out that “Fox would owe the 'Pac-4' more than $200M over term of Big 12 deal *even at discounted shares*. Amount Fox is currently scheduled to pay the four schools over that term: $0. Amount Fox believes they are worth based on its expansion strategy: $0.” (link, link)
+ Wilner and 247 Sports’ Brandon Marcello report clarity for Stanford and Cal’s ACC prospects should come in the next three to four days, with Marcello noting: “Room is warming to adding Cal, SMU and Stanford. Current members working together but still much to discuss and financial details to hammer out. Votes are ‘really close.’” (link, link)
+ Wilner takes a look at the Pac-12’s bylaws and concludes that while “final determination would be made by the attorneys…it sure seems like Washington State and Oregon State would be entitled to all the assets if they remain in the conference and orchestrate a salvage operation. … The Pac-12’s tax filings from the 2022 fiscal year show $43M in net assets, and a portion of that total is considered emergency reserves. Exactly how much, we cannot say. But WSU and OSU would, in theory, control that pot of cash. What’s more, the Pac-12 is expected to receive $65M from NCAA Tournament units earned by the current 12 teams that will be paid out over the course of the decade, according to Hotline estimates.” In the event the Pac-12 does execute a “reverse merger” by adding Mountain West and/or AAC schools, Wilner asks: “Would Fox and CBS, which own the Mountain West’s broadcast rights until 2026, consent to switch their agreement to the reformed Pac-12? Or would the reformed conference seek a new partner? (Hello, Apple!).” More. (link)
+ Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger on the financials of a potential ACC move for Stanford and Cal: “While Cal & Stanford may start at 30% share & SMU at 0, they will: see shares eventually escalate over remaining 13 yrs of the GoR [and] still receive ACC shares from NCAAT, CFP & incentive pool of revenue from expansion ($5-10M a year).” (link)

Attorney Andrew Coats, who represented Oklahoma, Georgia and other plaintiffs in the 1984 NCAA v. Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma case, tells NBC News’ David K. Li: “I think I screwed up college football across the board, because I think the case did it. … You feel bad how far it’s gone. But I don’t think anyone could have predicted what would happen.” Coats goes on to reveal that his clients wanted a settlement with the NCAA that would have left it in control of TV rights but selling more games. The NCAA didn’t want that. “We tried at every stage to negotiate an agreement of some kind, to limit what would happen. But we learned the ‘NCAA’ stood for ‘Never Compromise Anything at Anytime,’ and they wouldn’t even talk to us.” (link)

Sun Devils Surprise…
+ Mere days before the 2023 season kicks off, Arizona State has self-imposed a one-year bowl ban for this season amid an ongoing NCAA investigation into football recruiting violations. ESPN’s Pete Thamel: “The decision to self-impose a bowl ban comes at an interesting inflection point for NCAA enforcement. Tennessee faced a similarly daunting volume of allegations in its recent NCAA case, but the Volunteers escaped a postseason ban with a punishment that included an $8M fine. That decision prompted speculation that bowl bans may be an antiquated tool for punishment in NCAA enforcement.” (link)
+ The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner also weighs in: “It's not just that Herm Edwards was one of the worst hires in recent Pac-12 history, it's that everybody knew that would be the case ahead of time ... everybody except [Arizona State President Michael] Crow & [Sun Devils AD Ray] Anderson. Epic fail. And they *paid* Edwards to go away. Where's the fiduciary obligation to the school? Also, the seniors should lawyer up and demand to know why ban wasn't imposed before portal closed in May. What changed in past three months? Who knows, answers could be useful in trying to gain eligibility waiver for 2024.” (link)
+ And from Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde: “It’s fair to at least ask: Did the school time this decision to handcuff the players to the program for this season? Maybe Anderson will get around to answering that question. He also needs to answer for hiring college know-nothing Herm Edwards in the first place, and for retaining him more than a year after this scandal first came to light. Ultimately, Anderson himself needs to go, too. This festival of dysfunction still hasn’t run its full course, but the last clown at the center of it should be promptly herded off-stage.” (link)

Arizona AD Dave Heeke acknowledges that COVID and inflation have impacted the athletic department’s finances, telling the Arizona Daily Star’s Michael Lev that “we live right in that lane of those things that have been most impacted by expense increases — food, gas, airplane tickets, hotels. It is what we do. That's the bulk of our operating budget for our sports teams.” The Wildcats, Heeke notes, were close to starting a renovation to the west side of Arizona Stadium before the pandemic hit, but now: “My vision, I'd really like us to be talking in a bigger way. How do we take this whole end of campus – what I like to call the ‘Athletic District’ – and transform it in a different way, in a wholly different way? A $500M to $1B retail, real estate development project, enhancement of all the facilities, those kinds of things. What could you think (of that’s) much bigger and broader than just, let's knock a grandstand down? Those are the kinds of conversations we need to have in college athletics now. … We've got to look in a more professionalized, almost business sense, corporate way, of how we do those kinds of things.” More from Heeke, including the importance of taking into account how facilities will drive revenue. (link)

UTSA AD Lisa Campos acknowledges the Roadrunners have some work to do to keep pace financially with their peers in the AAC: “Everything, from operations, recruiting, travel, salaries, number of employees we have, we’re going to have to be really strategic in our investments and how we move the program forward. There's a lot of growth opportunity, but I'll reiterate that where we were five years ago to where we are now, I think we’re proven we’re committed to that, and we’re moving in the right direction.” For the 2021-22 academic year, UTSA’s $37.6M budget put the Roadrunners near the bottom of the league and well behind SMU’s $79.4M budget. Additionally, UTSA’s total football expenses of $12.8M ranked ninth in the league, less than half the total of top spenders Temple ($29M) and SMU ($27.1M). AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco: “All of the new schools coming in knew they would have to invest at a higher level. Whether that’s 100% more, 50% more, it’s a gradual process. They’re not going to do it all at once.” (link)

Nebraska Executive Associate AD/SWA Marquita Armstead and Purdue Deputy AD/SWA Tiffini Grimes join AthleticDirectorU’s Bryan Fischer for a wide-ranging conversation about several topics, including inclusive leadership, the impact of the SWA title and being a woman in a senior leadership role, the value of having a compliance background in the current era of collegiate athletics. Armstead tells Fischer: “I was able to build a lot of relationships by doing that job. You touch everything in the department, so you get some expertise in a lot of areas… I don’t think people realize all that compliance touches and is able to do.” Grimes notes that having the SWA designation is particularly important to her because “it gives you a seat at the table relative to the governance structure within your conference, so there are a lot of decisions that we play a role in making because we hold that designation.” Grimes also cites the “network of support,” explaining that “in this industry, at this level, you have to have support, and so the 14 women that sit in the Big Ten SWA room – soon to be 16 women – and the 14 women that I had the pleasure of working with in the SEC are my support system and they understand it they get it they encourage they uplift and I think that's something incredibly valuable.” (link)

Purdue Senior Assoc. AD for Compliance Tom Mitchell joins Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker from the 2023 NACDA Convention to discuss the college sports landscape from a compliance perspective, including how Purdue handles NIL, interaction with sports agents, recruiting and tampering and more. Mitchell points out the convergence of NIL and the transfer portal has really muddied the waters in regards to addressing tampering. “It’s still not clean enough. There’s still a lot that needs to be done in that space legislatively. There’s still an imbalance with the transfer rules and how they’ll work for undergrad that’s always been at your institution versus an undergrad transfer. And then when you add to the top of that, a lot of institutions are hearing things about NIL in the transfer market, in the transfer space…it’s hard to know what’s real and hard to know what’s not real. So, I do think that a national standard would be substantially helpful. … There really shouldn’t be that type of offers and inducement-type situation going on. You should pick a school for the right reasons and not because of side promises that may or may not be fulfilled.” (link)

“The family of a man who played UCLA football in the 1960s has filed a proposed class action against the NCAA, alleging his 2021 death was linked to a traumatic brain injury he received while playing and accusing the organization of having a ‘reckless disregard’ for athletes at the time.” More behind the Law360 paywall. ESPN’s Jeff Passan observes that “on Friday night, there were 4,319 pitches thrown across (Major League Baseball). And for the first time on a day with a full slate of 15 games, there were zero pitch-clock violations. Attendance is up 9.2%. Game time down 25 minutes, to 2:39. The rules changes are a rousing success.” (link)

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark indicated a week or so ago that the league is done expanding, however the San Francisco Chronicle’s Michael Silver reported yesterday: “As Cal and Stanford attempt to finalize a deal with the ACC, the Big 12 has surfaced as another potential landing spot. In that scenario the remaining Pac 12 schools (including Oregon State and Washington State) could also join the Big 12.” (link)

CBS Sports headliner Dennis Dodd says Oregon State & Washington State won’t make a decision on their future conference home until Labor Day “if not longer.” Key points: “American commissioner Mike Aresco is expected to engage with both schools by Zoom next week. An in-person meeting to both campuses is expected soon after, sources said. Mountain West commissioner Gloria Nevarez has already pitched both schools. [...] Oregon State and Washington State are being advised not to make a decision until it is clear what revenue remains to be distributed from what appears to be the dissolution of the Pac-12. That windfall could be upwards of the mid-eight figures, sources told CBS Sports.” Dodd also points to a source involved in the ACC’s process who reports developments are “trending strongly” for Stanford & Cal. New Pittsburgh Chancellor Joan Gabel calls Panthers AD Heather Lyke “without question one of the best athletic directors in the nation.” As for Lyke’s current contract, which expires in 2024, Gabel says a conversation will happen at the appropriate time and, “If it comes to that, we would absolutely do a market assessment and see where Heather sits.” Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Noah Hiles writes on progress made under Lyke’s tenure, yet points to the possibility of her involvement in the Ohio State AD search. Former Buckeyes AD Andy Geiger, who hired Lyke in Columbus: “I know Heather well enough to know that her head won’t be turned. She’s a Pitt Panther. She’s got a lot invested in what’s happening in Pittsburgh. If Ohio State comes calling, I’m sure she’d listen, but I don’t know if it’s a slam dunk that she’d just leave Pitt. The Ohio State job is an amazing job, and she might be interested, but she will work right up to the last minute for Pitt.” (link, link)

San Diego State AD John David Wicker pens a letter to Aztec Club supporters, expresses “disappointment and frustration in the recent events surrounding conference realignment,” while noting that he & SDSU President Adela de la Torre are continuing to “work tirelessly to secure the best possible situation.” More: “Despite our efforts and successes along the way, the final decisions have been out of our control. Please know that I understand how disheartening this may feel.” Wicker goes on to note the Aztecs will “control what we can control” & presses for more butts in seats at all athletic events. (link)

West Virginia AD Wren Baker remarks that “when you look at our strengths here, the fan passion and loyalty I think is our biggest strength. We have a lot (of strengths). We have a tremendous following and the metrics that the Big 12 shows us has us ranked up near the top of that grouping because of that affinity. But one of the weaknesses is our ability to monetize that loyalty. Two or three people [at a recent 1891 Club function] asked me about buying suites. Well, we don’t have any suites to sell, so we have to find a way to figure that out. Not only is that revenue prospect for us now, but we really cut ourselves off from some prospects for the future.” Baker also said the Mountaineers are exploring naming rights for all the venues, but it has to be worth it because “people get attached to certain names on venues, but they also get attached to winning, and that takes money.” Lots more. William & Mary AD Brian Mann joins Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss the Tribe’s fundraising momentum, having raised $13.1M in the last fiscal year. Mann breaks down the process of building relationships with donors, putting together a talented development team, how the department plans to reset the bar for the current fiscal year and lots more. On how NIL impacts fundraising: “It’s everywhere and for us, we're working behind the scenes. We know that this is going to be a big part of us moving forward, maybe not the same way as it is at higher levels from a dollar and cents standpoint, but our student-athletes are savvy. They’re already taking advantage of those opportunities. … We’re looking at moving into more of an area where collectives are actively engaged with our student-athletes, and I would imagine that'll come soon.” Full Q&A now available on Connect. Sean “Diddy” Combs made good on his 2022 promise to donate $1M to Howard and Jackson State, presenting the check to the Tigers during last night’s season opener against South Carolina State. Combs: “If it wasn’t for HBCUs, I wouldn’t be here. Supporting HBCUs is not just my honor, but responsibility. What they’re doing at Jackson State needs to be commended.” (link)

Vanderbilt Football HC Clark Lea announces the Commodores will be donating a portion of ticket sales from the home opener against Hawai’i last night to the Hawai’i Community Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund. Lea: “Nothing can replace what’s been lost, but please know we stand with you.” (link)

The Toledo Blade’s David Briggs got a sneak peek of Toledo’s new strategic plan for athletics, most of which will be made public this week, and Briggs asked UT President Gregory Postel if these blueprints are more of a plan or a wish. Postel: “It’s in between. It’s a combination of a plan for operational excellence to continue to do all that great things we’re doing and even push the pedal a little more. But it’s also a realistic request for support to bump some of the things to the next level. I don’t think it’s pie in the sky. Do people ever get all of what they ask for? No. But if you’re not ambitious, you’ll never move to the next level.” Briggs previews the potential upgrades, which include baseball and softball stadiums, outdoor football practice fields, a new academic center and training table, improving the Glass Bowl, a new videoboard at Savage Arena and more. Adding sports is also up for discussion, as Rockets AD Bryan Blair notes: “I don't want anybody to read that and jump and say, ‘Oh, we're adding hockey.’ That’s not the case. But in an evolving landscape, we owe it to ourselves to not only support our current 16 sports but look holistically at maybe some opportunities to add sports that help with university enrollment, help create a more vibrant campus, and fit into our existing facilities.” More. The Columbus Dispatch’s Joey Kaufman takes a look at how Ohio State has grown its football support staff over the years and notes the “Buckeyes enter this season with 50 full-time members of their support staff, including 16 quality control coaches and program assistants, six personnel directors and coordinators, two performance dietitians, a chief of staff, a physical therapist and a well-being director, among other roles that form the program’s vast infrastructure. … As part of the investment, the school is spending a combined $6.1M on the support staff, a figure in addition to the $9.5M reserved for Day’s annual compensation and $9.3M dedicated to the on-field assistant coaches’ salaries.” The steady growth notwithstanding, Buckeyes AD Gene Smith points out: “We’re nowhere near what the SEC is doing, and we're not going to be because we don't have to be. It's all about what the need is, and what that person brings to the table.” Football HC Ryan Day adds: “It’s finding that optimum level. You can have so many people where guys aren’t being efficient with their time. So I think we’re in a good spot with the numbers that we have.” Lots more. (link)

ESPN interviewed 53 NFL players to gauge the prevalence of sports betting, whether players fully understand the NFL gambling policy and what aspects they would change. Among the players, 21 said betting on other sports is either prevalent or some teammates bet on other sports; 17 said they weren't sure; 10 said it's either not prevalent or no teammates bet on other sports, and five didn't directly answer the question. Meanwhile, 26 said they believe players understand the league policy while 25 said they do not, and two said players should know if they don't. The lack of clarity about where players are allowed to bet and the NFL’s overall policy persists, with one player saying: "Everybody understood not betting on NFL games. But I think a lot of us, even including myself, was not aware of not being able to bet on other sports, especially when it came on league time. ... I don't think a lot of guys truly understood what it meant by 'when you [are] on the league's time.'" Another remarked: "You're telling me that if I walk 10 feet from the [facility's] door it doesn't matter anymore? I just think that's kind of dumb. It's pointless. I don't see how that's helping anything." Another player believes there should be no punishment for gambling, “especially since [legal gambling] is something that's being pushed. It's being promoted. It's being publicized and advertised. I don't care if it's during league hours or in the building." More. (link)
