Minnesota AD Mark Coyle addresses media reports that he was a candidate for the USC post, telling the Go Gophers podcast: “The search firm that did their search reached out to me and I explained our contract situation. I explained my family situation. Our youngest son Benjamin is a junior in high school and we feel very fortunate and blessed to be here in Minnesota. This is home for us – and had no more conversations with them." (link)

Plan A for the Pac-12 continues to be a rebuild, according to Washington State President Kirk Schulz, who says: “We still want to figure out what we might be able to do along with OSU and perhaps Cal and Stanford...about keeping the band together and see what that next step looks like." JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous purveyor also notes Schulz indicated a "merger or combination" with other schools/conferences is still on the table for the remaining Pac-12 schools but “pumped the brakes on a timeline. Feels like it could be a month before WSU/OSU get clarity. Schulz has marked Oct. 1 on his calendar.” On the Mountain West’s pitch to Wazzu, Schulz notes: “They feel pretty strongly that if you add a couple of schools, guess what, maybe we have easier access to the football playoffs than some of the P4 leagues might have where there are 20 schools or 18 schools all vying for a spot or two." Florida AD Scott Stricklin talks about the thinking behind agreeing to a home-and-home football series with Utah, telling the Orlando Sentinel’s Edgar Thompson: “The players want to play these games and the fans want to see them. Hopefully, once we get the 12-team playoff the selection committee will continue to encourage and incentivize that by their decision-making.” Stricklin also notes Gators HC Billy Napier “has not flinched one iota on any of this. He welcomes it. One of the reasons he was successful at Louisiana and will be successful in Florida is because he has the attitude of a competitor.” Napier adds: “We’ve always believed in having a formidable opponent early. It brings a certain level of urgency to training camp. This will be a very competitive game. They’re going to be highly motivated. We look forward to the challenge and the opportunity.” (link)

Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders questions the NCAA’s conviction when it says it cares about student-athletes’ mental health after Buffaloes offensive lineman Tyler Brown’s eligibility waiver was denied last month. Coach Prime asks: “Do you really care (about mental health), or are you saying you care? Are you caring when it’s convenient? Or when it’s profitable? … It don’t make sense. Some things just don’t make sense. You say you really care about mental health but when you have someone really dealing with mental health, there’s a problem. And then ostracizing him in not allowing him to do what he’s blessed and gifted to do and the thing that presents him peace, that’s trying for a young man.” Brown detailed his struggles with depression and anxiety in a video sent to the NCAA that was released earlier this week, saying he was particularly impacted by the passing of former Louisiana AC D.J. Looney, who suffered a fatal heart attack in front of Brown and his teammates during a team workout in 2020. Brown: “That hurts me to this day. That’s the day I lost my father figure, my first father figure.” Brown says the incident traumatized him, and he still suffers flashbacks. “I can still see him fall to the ground and see the nothingness in his eyes.” (link)

Cincinnati unveiled several changes to Nippert Stadium ahead of the Bearcats’ first season in the Big 12, including several new menu items and $400K in concession space improvements. Meanwhile, a new Ring of Honor encircles much of the top of the seating bowl on the eastern side of Nippert, a change from the previous setup in which former players’ numbers were displayed behind the north end zone. Additionally, the strip between the upper and lower decks on that side of the stadium honors the 2021 College Football Playoff semifinal team. Bearcats AD John Cunningham on the Big 12 move: “They’re championship-level programs that have invested a lot in their athletic department. We need to match that investment. We talk about the vision every day, which is not just to be OK with being in the Big 12 but to start to win championships and to compete every week.” (link)

+ West Virginia faculty members will hold a vote of no confidence in President Gordon Gee next week in response to significant cuts that have been proposed across the enterprise. The no-confidence proposal reads, in part: “President E. Gordon Gee has mismanaged the university’s finances – while also refusing to accept responsibility for the current financial situation of the university.” (link)

Fowler notes a recent transformational gift is going to “change the way in which we do business” and adds: “We want to cross-train and look holistically about how we’re putting out content, creative content, storytelling, managing our brand and letting people know – not just in the Ivy League, but across the country – what Dartmouth, Dartmouth athletics and the Big Green are all about.” Full Q&A now live on Connect. Gifford will oversee all college football event productions, including CFP games and spring football games. Gifford now reports directly to [EVP for Production Norby] Williamson. Coordinating Producers Bryan Jaroch and Nick Rud will report into Gifford on football.” Additionally, Shawn Murphy “will add high school football and NCAA football postseason playoff and championship games for FCS, D2 and D3, plus SEC Network content.” (link)

Coaches Corner…
+ When asked by a guest at his radio show about Texas and Texas A&M and how those departures made the Big 12 less desirable, Houston Football HC Dana Holgorsen remarked that those two schools are the reason why the Cougars were left out of Big 12 for nearly three decades, saying, per the Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte: “Screw them. They can go wherever they want. They don’t want us and we don’t want them.” (link)
+ The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman releases a list of the top 30 football ACs to keep an eye on this season, starting with Clemson OC Garrett Riley, under whose guidance TCU QB Max Duggan “began the season as the backup, finished as the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy.” Riley is followed by LSU DC Matt House, Wisconsin OC Phil Longo, Michigan OC Sherrone Moore, Florida State OC Alex Atkins, Washington OC Ryan Grubb, Ohio State OC Brian Hartline, Minnesota DC Joe Rossi, Texas Tech OC Zach Kittley and Florida State DC Adam Fuller in the top 10. Stony Brook AD Shawn Heilbron sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss his strategies for building a culture of trust for the Seawolves, including an open-door policy for providing and receiving feedback, meaningful dialogue with leadership on the academic side of campus, and a level of responsiveness that prioritizes the student-athlete experience. Heilbron also talks about prioritizing facilities projects, authentically engaging student-athletes, maintaining institutional alignment and more. On engaging with student-athletes authentically: “I think that's one of the things that we have to be intentional about every day, so I do what [is] I do laps each day. I walk around, it's very informal. I go through different offices. I poke out to practices, but really I try to catch student-athletes in their environment – in the hallway, in the academic center – and just talk to them. … That’s sincere, that's genuine, that's who I am. I think that's what I've tried to build our department around, so I can honestly get that feedback, so when there's an issue and there's a challenge…I'm able to really have meaningful dialogue with our student-athletes.” Full Q&A. In the latest edition of CBS’ Candid Coaches series, MBB coaches were asked what on-court rule change should come next to college basketball. Advancing the ball in the last two minutes after a timeout received the most votes (28%), followed by a 24-second shot clock (21%), switching to four quarters rather than two halves (20%), improvements to monitor reviews/allowing coaches’ challenges (7%), adopting the FIBA goaltending rule (5%) and changing the flop technical (4%). One coach says of changing the rule for teams to advance the ball after timeouts: “To me, it's completely bonkers that that's the product we're putting out there. I've lost so many more games not being able to advance the ball – and I've won so many games because the other team couldn't advance the ball." CBS’ Matt Norlander cites several March Madness moments that were only possible by not being allowed to advance the ball after a timeout and writes: “I don't know if I'm prepared to die on this hill, but I'll sure as hell defend it with enthusiasm and vigor. Some of college hoops' most iconic moments have happened because of this wrinkle in the rulebook. And yet: coaches want to get rid of it. I completely understand why. … But nowhere else in major American sports does a team get to advance its possession/scoring objective without resistance from (or by fault of) its opponent. It is inherently a gimmick dressed up as a workaround. It's done for TV, most of all.” (link)

Disney, Bloomberg, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, Axios and several other media companies have joined publishers Condé Nast, Hearst, and Vox Media and several other media outlets in blocking ChatGPT from scanning their platforms for content. One news executive tells CNN’s Oliver Darcy: “Most of the internet is garbage. Traditional media publishers, on the other hand, are fact-driven and offer quality content.” News Media Alliance President/CEO Danielle Coffey adds: “I see a heightened sense of urgency when it comes to addressing the use, and misuse, of our content. One publisher told me it is an existential threat. Another publisher told me there isn’t a business model with certain uses of A.I. … there is a sense of urgency to address this.” (link)

Gannett, meanwhile, has paused its AI sports writing initiative after the Columbus Dispatch published a high school football recap that sounded like it was written by aliens. In fact, the robotic recap, which did not include any players’ names, did describe the game as a “close encounter of the athletic kind." Another LedeAI recap failed to generate team names, describing them instead as “WINNING_TEAM_MASCOT” and “LOSING_TEAM_MASCOT.” A Gannett spokesperson did not respond to a question from Axios about whether its newsrooms reviewed LedeAI recaps before publication, as the Columbus Dispatch’s pages of ethical principles promises. ESPN’s Andrea Adelson notes there is still no call rescheduled for ACC presidents to discuss potential expansion. “Jim Phillips is going to Dallas for CFP meetings tomorrow. It is my understanding nobody has flipped yet on adding Cal, Stanford and SMU but talks continue.” (link); Meanwhile, the ACC opened its new HQ in Charlotte by raising the flags of all 15 members. Commissioner Jim Phillips: “It is a historical day for the ACC as we are welcomed to the Queen City. This has been a journey over the last 18 months, and we are thrilled to be joining the Charlotte community. We are honored and proud to call Charlotte the home of the ACC.” (link - release, link - photos)

Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti sits down for a wide-ranging interview with On3’s Pete Nakos, who asks about The Collective Association’s revenue-sharing model, which calls for collectives to disperse TV payouts to athletes. Petitti: “I don’t think that we’re in a position now to support the idea that outside third parties are entering into relationships outside the system if we’re going to take revenue that is being generated by the conference and its members. If the belief is student-athletes need more benefits, and I think that’s something that’s likely that we have to figure out how we can do more for student-athletes, but that should come within the system. … Secondly, I don’t understand what it would mean for Title IX. And the last piece is I don’t understand the tax implications of it. So it sounds like OK, let the collectives pay. But OK, so the first thing they did was, say, ‘Let’s take the money that the conference is generating and run it through this third party.’” Petitti also tells Nakos he believes a law passed by Congress and policies established by the NCAA need not be mutually exclusive, noting that various bills currently being floated all do slightly different things. “And we need to kind of come together to talk about the things that we think are important and the things that we are supportive of.” Full Q&A. LEAD1 CEO Tom McMillen chats with On3’s Eric Prisbell, says he would like to see NIL collective activity be brought in-house under the purview of universities and their fundraising arms, noting that if revenue-sharing is in the cards, it would be best to have the distribution mechanism within university confines. “You don’t want to give dollars to collectives so you’re trying to bypass employment. They [collectives] are trying to say, ‘We’re the conduit for rev-share.’ I said, ‘My God.’ It’s insanity. Yet that’s what’s being pitched out there to avoid employment. … The NFL and the NBA would never allow collectives to handle their most important asset, which is the players. The rationale for bringing it in-house is that you’ve got structure, you’ve got accountability, you’ve got Title IX. And Title IX, the way it works, you don’t have to have equal outcomes. You just have to have equal opportunities.” Regarding the idea of Power 5 football programs breaking away from the NCAA, McMillen warns the “whole enterprise could be taxed. You can be treated like a business. In other words, the more that you go down the pure business route, the more you’re going to be treated like a business by Congress and regulatory agencies. … You start paying athletes and coaches are making millions of dollars, they are going to say, ‘Why should anyone get a deduction for giving to this? Is this advancing education? Take away all of their tax deductions. As a matter of fact, take away their whole non-profit status. Treat them like a business.’” Lots more in here from McMillen. (link)

Arizona State has released a statement concerning this year’s postseason ban which notes the deadline for undergraduate players to enter the transfer portal was in April while the NCAA ruling on Tennessee was handed down in July. “In the University of Tennessee case, the NCAA Committee on Infractions imposed ‘an enhanced financial penalty’ of $8M in lieu of a postseason competition ban” along with several recruiting restrictions, including the loss of 120 recruiting evaluation days, a loss of 28 scholarships and a 28-week reduction of communications with recruits. “ASU believes that if recruiting penalties of the type set out in the Tennessee case were applied to ASU, such penalties would seriously impair Coach Dillingham’s ability to build ASU’s football program. ASU self-imposed a postseason ban to help pave the way for program stability and greater clarity going forward.” (link)

Tomorrow’s Volleyball Day in Nebraska could possibly set several attendance records, including the largest crowd at Memorial Stadium (91,585), the largest crowd to watch a women’s sporting event in the U.S. (90,185 for the 1999 World Cup Final), largest crowd to watch a women’s sporting event in the world (91,648 for a Barcelona-Wolfsburg soccer match), and will likely smash the NCAA volleyball attendance record of 18,755. (link - check out the bird’s eye, link - view from the court); Huskers AD Trev Alberts: “I don't know how to properly define just how big this is. Unless [the football team is] undefeated when we play Michigan in Week 5, I don't know of anything that's going to be bigger. … In our state, people just really enjoy big events. So I get excited thinking about the energy in our stadium and doing something special for these young women. Doing something special for our fans. Doing something special for our entire state.” As far as preparations, Alberts says it’s a “monumental task” that has involved months of planning. NU began work Thursday night to build a 140-foot-long stage on the north side of the 50-yard line. Meanwhile, Huskers Director of Volleyball Operations Lindsay Peterson notes the Huskers began monitoring weather 10 days out because Midwest summer systems are too unpredictable. “You can’t just roll out a court and play.” (link, link)

Former Adidas consultant Merl Code has filed a lawsuit against the company in which he argues his actions which led to his eventual arrest and imprisonment in the 2017 MBB-FBI probe were approved by his boss, former Director of Global Sports Marketing James Gatto. From the suit: “[Code] communicated with James Gatto relative to the request to financially compensate Bowen’s father in order to have Bowen agree to enroll and play basketball for the University of Louisville. James Gatto communicated with basketball staff at the University of Louisville who wanted Bowen to enroll and play for their University. [Adidas] approved the payments to Bowen’s father. [Adidas] facilitated the payments by having money wired into an Adidas travel high school basketball team located in Greenville, South Carolina and then the money was withdrawn and paid to Bowen’s father.” Code is seeking $500K in legal expenses as well as damages. The games will be available in away team markets (or home and away team markets for neutral site games), and prices will be set by the theaters. Theater Sports Network President/COO Scott Daw: “We believe movie theaters are the next great frontier for live sporting events. … We believe that theaters have the ability to generate excitement around live sporting events.
