Volleyball Day in Nebraska set a new record attendance for a women’s sporting event with 92,003 fans inside Memorial Stadium. (link); Huskers AD Trev Alberts: "There's a great business case and strategy around women's athletics long-term that maybe college athletics hasn't embraced. And we think here in Nebraska, long before I became the athletic director, we've significantly invested in women's athletics, and you're seeing the result of that by seeing the success of the volleyball program and the fan base surrounding it." Arizona Senator T.J. Shope (R-16) is calling on Arizona Board of Regents President Fred DuVal to investigate Arizona State AD Ray Anderson for a “raft of improprieties and frankly embarrassing issues." In the letter, Shope cites several reasons for his request, including the "questionable hiring" of former Football HC Herm Edwards and Edwards’ subsequent buyout. Shope adds: “I have lost faith that action will be taken at the university level, given the near decade of inaction during Mr. Anderson's tenure, which is why I look to you. … Frankly, the public needs to see action taken. Leadership should immediately be displayed by you and the rest of the Board in taking that action. Without it, it is clear that nothing will be done. Reputational harm is being done to ASU, both at home and nationally." (link); Meanwhile, Anderson yesterday said of the timing of the self-imposed postseason ban for football: “It is called a negotiated resolution process because it is indeed a negotiation. It takes time. A lot of it is driven by how many witnesses, how much evidence. Are they available, are they cooperating? That timing is dictated by the circumstances and it is dictated by the NCAA. It’s not the individual institution that controls that.” (link)

More from yesterday’s College Football Playoff Management Committee meeting as MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said: “To me what's important, the principle of honoring conference champions is important. I think that's a bedrock principle of what we are doing and what we've built into this. I think it's important that that is continued as we move forward. Depending on the number of conferences we have, I think you can have a legitimate conversation about the number of champions that are set here as well as numbers of at-large [bids], but to me, start with the bedrock principle. And I think that's important that we keep that in there. I did. I felt good coming out of that conversation.” Meanwhile, CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock indicated it was unlikely the CFP would have more than two TV partners in the last two years of its contract. “There was talk about multiple partners a couple years ago. There was an emphasis for that among one or two commissioners, but I don't feel that emphasis as much anymore. I think they’d be satisfied with one if that's how it comes out.” (link)

Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick says of a potential revenue-sharing model for athletes: "I'm open to anything that expands the value for students. But I don't hear a lot of ideas that have Title IX at the forefront. They need to. That's important." (link)

The AAC has “contingency plans” in the event SMU were to leave, according to Commissioner Mike Aresco, who believes the Power 5 and Group of 5 descriptors directly led to the recent realignment wave. “I’ve talked about how destructive this whole P5 thing can be. It’s all about branding. It’s all about the P5 conferences. We heard, ‘Well, Stanford and Cal have no place to go.’ They had a place to go. It may not be the place they wanted to go ideally, but they weren’t orphans. They had a chance to go somewhere. There’s this desperation now because of the P5 branding. That’s really what’s going on. … I understand the issue of money, and it’s based on TV deals. But guys are willing to go for virtually nothing because they feel like they have to have that – they feel that they need that branding.” Aresco also notes a decision on expansion will likely come soon. “I don’t really think you can go on too much longer. None of this is really healthy.” (link)

The ACC unveils the ACCOMPLISH GREATNESS creative campaign designed in partnership with Wasserman and its creative agency Laundry Service. The campaign emphasizes the league’s historic success in athletics and academics and will roll out nationally and in member markets throughout the 2023-24 academic year. Pittsburgh AD/previous ACC Chair of ADs Heather Lyke: “It was a priority for the ACC to embark on this branding effort to illustrate and amplify how exceptional our member institutions are both academically and athletically. We are the most accomplished conference nationwide in both realms. Through this campaign, we are striving to raise awareness of our many successes across all sports. … The ACC is building a brand that is progressive and innovative. We have a rich history and an even greater future ahead.” (link)

Kansas AD Travis Goff talks about the importance of continuing to improve in football, remarking on the Jayhawker podcast: “The lack of success around football in some regards has – at the risk of of being a little over dramatic – it's frankly not developed multiples of generations of Jayhawk fans and supporters. So, you’ve got to go back to the '08s and the '09s for people to really remember what it feels like to have energy around football, something that our country says is incredibly important. It’s an emotional engine, it's a campus-wide alumni-wide engagement tool that really in most places is unrivaled and we’ve left all that on the table. … I’m not critical of it because I understand why, but the reality is those days are no more.” Goff also says KU has so far secured $165M in commitments toward its $300M goal for facilities upgrades, including the Gateway Project and updates to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. Indiana received more than 4K responses from fans in an online survey it launched to solicit feedback as IU zeroes in on plans to modernize Memorial Stadium. Hoosiers AD Scott Dolson: “The Nations Group was ecstatic with the initial wave of responses. … To me that shows people care, that is awesome. The worst-case scenario for us is we send out a survey then responses trickle in. Compared to the other schools that the Nation's Group has worked with, they felt like this was really good.” As for the project itself, Dolson notes: “Whether it's in one phase or three phases or how we do it, how we raise the money, what's feasible from a fundraising perspective and how we can finance the project — all those details for the project will come out after we decide what to do.” (link)

Media Musings…
+ The ESPN Player platform, which allows international streamers to view college sports, has shut down, “and there’s no immediate distribution plan in place for ESPN’s college content – not just in the UK, but throughout Europe,” The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel notes. However, an ESPN spokesperson tells him: “We will continue to make ESPN content available to fans across EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) through our wholly-owned linear channels and multi-sport websites and mobile apps. Additionally, ESPN distributes numerous hours of live sports across the region through our affiliate partners.” (link)

+ Barstool will lay off nearly 25% of its employees, The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand and Michael Rosenstein report, noting the layoffs will impact roughly 100 workers. The company added around 300 people after its partnership with Penn Entertainment, and Founder/CEO Dave Portnoy says: “I’ve been very clear. Anybody that’s paid attention, we are going to have layoffs and cuts, and they’ve started and it sucks. … Having said that, we’re in a position it’s a no-brainer. It’s not like I have that moral — well you can’t do it because nobody will have jobs. We’ll all not have jobs. So we have to get back to a break-even thing. We’re losing a lot and it sucks.” (link)

The College Football Playoff Management Committee has concluded its meeting in Dallas, during which it approved a stipend for players’ families to travel to playoff games, Executive Director Bill Hancock tells Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger & other media, who note the stipend is a “continuation of what CFP has done for years. It’s $3,000 per player family.” Hancock also notes the commissioners “will have to wait til the dust settles” on realignment for format changes, though he notes there were discussions regarding format adjustments, including a change from 6+6 to 5+7. Additionally, Dellenger reports the CFP has tapped Allegiant Sports Travel to assist in lodging logistics for the four new first-round playoff games. (link)

Utah State President Elizabeth Cantwell tells Utah Public Radio that “as far as I am concerned at the moment, the Mountain West is strong and together. I am not worried that USU is at risk there for the moment.” Cantwell acknowledges the landscape is quickly changing but reiterates: “I‘m saying with complete conviction that the Mountain West is strong, acknowledging that it is a real strange world out there.” She also notes former Interim AD Jerry Bovee is “still here and with us, (and) totally supportive of Diana Sabau.” (link)

Wisconsin-Green Bay Chancellor Michael Alexander tells the Green Bay Press Gazette’s Scott Venci the university is “committed to athletics. I am not hearing the constant sniping that goes back and forth at any university around how much money is going to athletics. I am done hearing it. We’ve made a decision, and we have made it strongly. The irony of this whole conversation is that we’ve actually funded from the university’s perspective more than we’ve ever given to athletics. … To put this in perspective, our golf coach was the Nordic ski coach. We have a full-time Nordic ski coach now. … We are not just putting a sport there to have a placeholder for 14 sports. That had been happening for however long we have been a Division I program. Our soccer alumni used to go ski for the Nordic ski team so they could keep that as one of their sports. This has been stuff that has been going on here forever that we have cleaned up.” Alexander goes on to assert he is confident that UWGB will remain a DI program: “We should be there. We are the third-largest city in Wisconsin. This city should demand that we have a Division I athletic program. We are a Division I city. We have the Packers, for goodness sakes.” Lots more from Alexander. (link)

College football is on an inexorable march toward two 20-team megaconferences “that are fully weaponized versions of the Big Ten and SEC and are aligned with the highest broadcast bidders,” according to Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde and Richard Johnson, who share their proposal for creating the “Professional Amateur Non-Employee Football League, or PANE-FL for short.” In compiling the 40-team conglomeration, Forde and Johnson describe their methodology as follows: “We ranked our top 50, then averaged them and threw out those that didn’t make the cut. What happens to those cast aside? In the true spirit of college athletics, we don’t care. Fend for yourselves while we’re over here counting our money.” In March Madness terms, Forde and Johnson identify Kentucky, North Carolina, Ole Miss and Arkansas as the Last Four In the field and NC State, Iowa State, Louisville and Cincinnati as the First Four Out. Boise State is the lone Group of 5 inclusion. Full breakdown of the five divisions of four in each league. (link)

Toledo unveils its Rise Together strategic plan for 2023-28 based on a six-step flywheel which includes recruiting, retaining and developing the best student-athletes, coaches and staff; generating student-athlete success; elevating the brand; enhancing “Team Toledo” engagement; growing resources; and investing in infrastructure. Rockets AD Bryan Blair: “Our mission is as simple as it is ambitious: to transform the lives of our student-athletes while elevating the University and community through the power of sports. Working together as #TeamToledo, we seek to increase the national prominence of our athletics programs, University, and community, while graduating champions who will one day change the world.” Full plan. Athletes.org, which was recently launched by INFLCR Founder Jim Cavale, is “financially linked with a for-profit entity that Cavale simultaneously launched this year,” according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who reports the “application for tax-exempt status from Athletes.org (AO), filed with the IRS in June, AO had a ‘written sponsorship agreement’ in place with Cavale’s Athletes Innovations Inc., the for-profit company. Athletes Innovations paid the nonprofit an unspecified fee that ‘allows it to support its mission.’ Per the application, Athletes.org claimed the sponsorship agreement was negotiated and approved by AO’s directors, who ‘do not have an interest in Athletes Innovations,’ which ensured that it was ‘negotiated at arm’s length.’” Cavale tells Libit that Athletes Innovation was established to serve as the entity through which strategic partners could provide the initial funding for AO. More from Libit. (link)

Athletes.org subsequently released a statement to Libit indicating that it is waiting for an IRS Letter of Determination to be an official 501(c)(3) organization. “Our operating expenses will be funded through donations from corporate partners in the various categories where we are already offering services to our member athletes at no charge – i.e. Financial Literacy, Mental Health, NIL Advisory, Legal, Accounting, etc. We have a solid prospect list of companies in these categories who are ready to work with us once we get our IRS Determination Letter. … As mentioned in the article, there is a great deal of urgency for an organization like ours to emerge in organizing college athletes and we didn’t want to wait to launch. To launch now, we’ve funded Athletes Innovations Inc. so that as the first corporate partner of Athletes.org, there is funding and runway to get it off the ground.” (link)

Overall, UNM MBB generated $3.8M in ticket revenue despite the cancelation of the New Mexico State matchup, which one staffers says cost the school around $400K. Lobos AD Eddie Nuñez: “The success in (men's) basketball — we were projecting it to be higher than the previous year, but still being conservative and not trying to overdo it because we knew where the season-ticket numbers were leading into the year, but what ended up happening was people came through on single-game ticket sales and it ended up doing really well."
