It remains unclear whether there are enough votes within the ACC to add Stanford, Cal and SMU ahead of this mornings presidents call, ESPN’s Andrea Adelson reports, noting there is “hope for a resolution to the monthlong conversations.” Adelson adds: “There is optimism layered in ambiguity from the schools out West, who are simultaneously making plans for a yes vote but uncertain whether it will arrive.” Meanwhile, North Carolina Board of Trustees Chair David L Boliek Jr. and Vice Chair John P. Preyer last night released a statement indicating that a “strong majority” of the board opposes the proposed expansion. “Although we respect the academic excellence and the athletic programs of those institutions, the travel distances for routine in-conference competitive play are too great for this arrangement to make sense for our student athletes, coaches, alumni and fans. Furthermore, the economics of this newly imagined transcontinental conference do not sufficiently address the income disparity ACC members face.” Adelson subsequently notes: “With Florida State and Clemson seemingly entrenched in their positions against expansion, that means all eyes potentially turn to NC State.” (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde argues that adding Stanford, Cal and SMU will not only help solve the ACC’s financial problems, it will also provide safeguards against future defections. “After commissioner Jim Phillips has been rolling boulders uphill for months to find ways to improve his league’s footing, he has finally found it – with the help of several league members. Now it’s time for the Obstinate Four to accept that gift.” Forde goes on to point out that Pac-12 and ACC schools are already competing against one another this season, with that Cal women’s soccer team traveling to North Carolina on August 20, its men’s soccer team playing at Wake Forest last Sunday and Duke’s women’s soccer team set to play at Stanford on Saturday night. … For Stanford, Cal and SMU, this conference relocation is without question the best available alternative. For the ACC, this expansion is also the best available alternative in terms of getting what school presidents have explicitly asked for. Hold the vote Friday and end the dithering. Expand the ACC.” (link)

Former Washington/Boise State Football HC Chris Petersen Q&As with the Los Angeles Times’ J. Brady McCollough about his time working with incoming USC AD Jen Cohen and says that “one of her superpowers is reading people, figuring out personalities. She could tell me, you are really going to connect with this person, or I don’t think this person is going to be someone you will fit with very well. She was so good at that. Even when she became the AD, if I was hiring somebody in our building, I didn’t care what the position was, I always tried to see if Jen had 15 minutes to talk to this person. And she had no background on this person, but I always wanted to get her take on what she thought. She was really good when it comes to what people are all about. … I just liked her whole mentality. She just kind of had that ‘roll your sleeves up and let’s go to work, let’s do hard work and solve tough problems.’ I just think Jen is super self aware, she is really good with reading the room, and she’s got tremendous courage.” Petersen goes on to say if “people will get out of the way and let her do her job in that department down there, she’s going to make USC better, there’s no question about it.” (link)

The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach observes that Volleyball Day in Nebraska is part of an ongoing embrace of women’s sports across the country, “finding out that there’s a big audience and opportunity for growth. The reason we’ve seen so many TV networks and athletic departments invest in women’s sports recently is because it’s smart business. These are areas with growth potential. They’re not charity cases. … There is, indeed, an audience for women’s sports. It’s been proven over and over again, by trends in television viewership for women’s basketball, volleyball, softball and gymnastics. By season-ticket sellouts in places like Lincoln and Iowa City. By merch sales across the country. By the hordes of fans who follow (Iowa’s) Caitlin Clark seemingly wherever she goes.” Auerbach adds: “Nebraska fans deserve a lot of credit for showing up and making this spectacle as big and undeniable as it became. No casual sports fan in America could ignore it, which is why it mattered so much.” (link)

Volleyball Day in Nebraska drew 518K viewers, making it the most-watched non-conference volleyball event in Big Ten Network history. It was also the No. 2 all-time regular season volleyball audience across all networks, per BTN. (link)

Kansas AD Travis Goff says he’s unsure of when the IARP will issue its ruling following an investigation into alleged men’s basketball recruiting violations. “I think there’s been a natural evolution like initially earlier in my tenure, you start thinking: ‘Okay, well it’s probably going to hit by X’ [and] then that doesn’t happen. Then, ‘it must be hitting by Y.’ I don’t think we are hyper-focused [on it] because it’s so far out of our control. At the end of the day, we just have to be prepared for whatever it’s going to be, and we’ve got to handle it really well. I’m confident that’s what we’re going to do.” Goff also says it’s unclear if/how KU’s self-imposed sanctions will impact the IARP’s decision. “Conceivably, there could be some positives to that. But, you never know how that’s going to play out. We had a great alignment in that being the right move almost a year ago, and I guess that will be determined as to how that plays out in the final outcome.” (link)

Kansas has received a $10M gift from longtime supporter Dana Anderson to support the Gateway District project. Anderson, the namesake of the Anderson Family Football Complex, has now given more than $40M to KU in his lifetime. KU Chancellor Douglas Girod: “The Gateway District is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reshape our campus and drive economic development through the creation of exciting new amenities for students, employees and visitors while providing Kansas Football the facilities it needs to compete at the highest level. We are humbled by Dana’s generosity in support of this exciting project and deeply appreciative of his commitment to KU.” (link)

Florida AD Scott Stricklin says he’s open to the possibility of playing midweek games if they make sense for the Gators. For instance, Stricklin says last night’s matchup with “Utah being on the road to start the season, I think it competitively makes sense. We can start practice a couple of days early and we get more of a break coming back from a long west coast trip, western time zone trip. When they make sense strategically, I think it’s important to do." Stricklin also notes last season’s Black Friday matchup against Florida State drew close to 7M viewers and says: "My guess is we’ll have those opportunities going forward, both in Tallahassee and in Gainesville we have to make a decision. Last year was one of the more watched Florida-FSU games. We were 6-5 and they were 8 (wins). There are some opportunities and that’s over a holiday, too, so that makes sense." (link)

Disney-owned networks including ESPN and ABC went dark on Spectrum last night as Florida-Utah kicked off after the two sides were unable to reach a new distribution agreement. The pair’s original deal expired at 5pm ET, but they agreed to short-term extensions before networks began blacking out to customers. Charter says in a statement on its website that “we would agree to The Walt Disney Company’s significant rate increase despite their declining ratings. But they are trying to force our customers to pay for their very expensive programming, even those customers who don’t want it or worse, can’t afford it. The current video ecosystem is broken. With The Walt Disney Company, we have proposed a model that creates better alignment for the industry and better choices for our customers.” Disney says “Disney Entertainment has successful deals in place with pay TV providers of all types and sizes across the country, and the rates and terms we are seeking in this renewal are driven by the marketplace. We’re committed to reaching a mutually agreed upon resolution with Charter and we urge them to work with us to minimize the disruption to their customers.” (link, link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker defended the association’s transfer rules following several highly publicized waiver rejections recently, by pointing out the rules are voted on by members and adding: “Look, you’re talking about less than one percent of all transfers.” Baker also pointed out that because of COVID, a significant number of student-athletes “probably didn’t have the same opportunities in many cases to check out the first school they went to, and transferring made some sense. I do think that there will be less of that now that kids are back to being able to actually go to school, check it out, figure it out and make decisions. … But the membership made a decision, and the decision was they don’t want kids to snap from place to place. And if they are going to do a second transfer, they want to make sure they get their feet on the ground, their credits get taken care of and they deal with a lot of issues that might have been involved in why they transferred for a second time.” (link)
|
Baker was also in attendance at yesterday’s record-breaking Volleyball Day in Nebraska and was asked whether volleyball could secure its own media rights deal. His reply: “I’ve said from the beginning that I’m not going to give anybody any indication at all who’s on the buy side, about what my intent is. My intent is to do the absolute best we possibly can on behalf of all the sports that are in the bundle. But women’s sports in particular — volleyball, softball, gymnastics, basketball — they’ve all shown enormous growth in both attendance and viewership over the last couple of years. I think there’s a really big opportunity here. I also think the growth of youth sports in volleyball is intense.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner debuts the Hot 25 ranking of the most influential behind-the-scenes figures in college football. With one exception, the list excludes ADs, coaches, players and “front-facing media members.” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey tops the list, followed by Fox Sports President/COO Mark Silverman, ESPN President of Content Burke Magnus, TurnkeyZRG CEO Len Perna and Managing Director of Athletics Administration & Coaching Chad Chatlos, Mississippi State President College Football Playoff Board of Managers Chair Mark Keenum, Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti, Women Leaders CEO Patti Phillips, labor attorneys Jeffrey Kessler and Steve Berman, Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark and ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips to round out the top 10, respectively. Additionally, Wilner makes the following observation about CAA agent Jimmy Sexton, ranked 11th on the list: “Sexton would make our list even if Alabama’s Nick Saban and Georgia’s Kirby Smart were his only clients. Alas, he has many others, and his masterful manipulation of the system has fueled the escalation of coaching salaries that’s partly responsible for the momentum behind compensating the players. After all, if the coaches are making $8 million or more per year, shouldn’t the labor be entitled to something?” Full ranking. (link)

Maui Invitational operator KemperLesnik is exploring its options for hosting the 40th iteration of the tournament following the wildfires in Hawaii. “Our focus has been and will continue to be on the people of Maui. No decision has been made yet as to the location of this year’s Maui Invitational, which will be played Nov. 20-22. At the appropriate time, we will meet with Maui officials to discuss where we can best host the event in a safe and respectful manner for residents, players, staff and fans. We know how important the Maui Invitational is to the local community, both emotionally and economically, and we are committed to hosting an event that will celebrate, respect and honor the aloha spirit.” Hawaii’s Stan Sheriff Center is one possibility, according to Spectrum News’ Brian McInnis, as are War Memorial Gym in Wailuku and South Maui Community Park Gymnasium in Kihei. Chaminade Men’s Basketball HC Eric Bovaird: “Maui would be the No. 1 option, no doubt. If the Maui people and the officials want us over there, that's where we want to be. … If not, I think we can do a great job of hosting this year on Oahu. The Stan Sheriff could potentially be a site for that." (link)

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Ken Sugiura examines the sponsorship transition from Chick-fil-a to Aflac for the Peach Bowl and Aflac (formerly Chick-fil-a) Kickoff Game in Atlanta, pointing out that Aflac has already invested in college football sponsorship and is located in Atlanta. He adds: “A clincher was that the Peach Bowl and Aflac both have a close connection with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta; the Peach Bowl has donated $22.5M of its proceeds to CHOA. Since 1995, Aflac has been the primary sponsor for CHOA’s cancer and blood disorder center, contributing more than $168M to research and treatment.” Aflac U.S. President Virgil Miller: “So when [Peach Bowl President/CEO] Gary [Stokan] mentioned the opportunity to do this with college football, with our current presence with what we do, I was excited. I immediately made the phone call back, talked to (Chief Marketing Officer Garth Knutson) and said, ‘Garth, get ready. We need to make this happen.’” Stokan adds: “It’s like Michael Jordan said, ‘You miss all the shots, you don’t take,’ right? So I took the shot. He could have said (unenthusiastically), ‘Yeah, it’s great. Well, we don’t have any interest.’ But he ran the ball, so we got the kickoff game done.” (link)
