As the World Realigns…
+ The ACC makes it official, inviting all three schools to join the league as full members with full voting participation, effective July 1, 2024, (SMU) and August 2, 2024 (Stanford and Cal). Virginia President/ACC Board of Directors Chair James Ryan: “This expansion will enhance and strengthen the league now and in the future. We greatly appreciate the tireless efforts of Commissioner Jim Phillips throughout this entire process, especially his focus on minimizing travel burdens for student-athletes, and we are excited about the ACC’s collective future.” (link)
+ The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel confirms the revenue distribution for Stanford and Cal will be 30% shares of media distributions for the first seven years, 70% percent in Year 8, 75% in Year 9 and 100% in Years 10-12. The duo will still receive full shares of ACC Network, NCAA Tournament units, CFP payouts, etc. (link, link)
+ As for the Mustangs, they will forgo TV revenue for nine years. (link)
+ ESPN’s Pete Thamel adding: “That money being withheld is expected to create an annual pot of revenue between $50M and $60M. Some of the revenue will be divided up proportionally among the 14 full-time members and Notre Dame, and another portion will be put in a pool designated for success initiatives that rewards programs that win.” (link)
+ The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach reports NC State flipped its no vote to a yes. (link)
+ Clemson, Florida State and North Carolina maintained their “no” votes. (link, link, link)
+ ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips: “You either get busy or get left behind. … There was a feeling that there was an awful lot of good about these three particular schools. But for whatever reasons, not everybody believed that to be true. One of the greatest pauses was about the student athlete experience. What does that feel like, what does that look like? California, the Bay Area, is a long ways away from our membership." However, Phillips notes cross-country basketball will occur twice every four years, while football teams will make the trip once every other year. “Coming back the other way will be three or four trips for Cal/Stanford. For our Olympic sports, it's zero-to-one (East-to-West). The other way would be three, maybe four." Phillips on further expansion: “I can't say no forever, but…expansion will not be top of mind for our group.” (link)
+ AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco wishes the Mustangs well and says in a statement: “We have known that today’s move was a possibility, which has allowed us time to investigate a number of options, including consideration of the larger group of institutions in the Pacific time zone. We have concluded, however, that the best way to proceed for our outstanding student-athletes is to not look westward. Instead, we plan to focus any expansion efforts on schools that allow for sensible and sustainable competition and student-athlete well-being within our strong geographic footprint.” (link)
+ With AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco seeming to indicate it would not seek to add Washington State and Oregon State, he tells The Athletic the league could stick with 13 football-playing members, but it is open to adding one more. However, adding three schools to get to 16 is a long shot. Army West Point, Auerbach and Chris Vannini note, is believed to be atop the list of potential candidates. (link)
+ Cal characterizes the revenue distribution model as follows: “The university will receive a full share of all revenues, including media revenue, while contributing back a portion of its media revenue to support and strengthen the conference and its current member institutions. UC Berkeley's membership contribution will taper off until the 10th year, at which point it will begin retaining 100% of its media revenue share. The fact that annual revenue will increase over time was an important factor in the agreement. UC Berkeley will also receive a full share of other conference payouts that come from the College Football Playoff, NCAA basketball distribution, bowl games and more.” (link)
+ Cal Chancellor Carol Crist says the ACC plans to use Dallas as a place to hold some sporting events to ease cross-country travel for everyone, per Vannini. (link)

Newly named Long Beach State AD Bobby Smitheran’s five-year contract includes a base salary of $275K. CollegeAD reports Smitheran is eligible for yearly merit-based raises and can earn $5K for each regular season or conference tournament win. His bonus cap is $35K. The contract does not include a buyout, but does contain a clause which prohibits Smitheran from seeking other employment without first notifying LBSU. (link)

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione weighs in on the overall significance of conference realignment, telling On3’s Pete Nakos: "It's the churn and disruption in our entire space of intercollegiate athletics that has been going on for quite some time. The idea that realignment presented itself in the last few years shouldn't be a shock to people who were truly paying attention. That being said, the way some of it has evolved has been stunning. There's just a real difficulty now trying to navigate this period of time. I don't think anybody would dispute that this is the most tumultuous time that college athletics has ever experienced that we're not done with. … The best thing we can continue to do is have the best thought leaders at the table to understand the changes that have taken place to try to chart the best course forward and to create the model that is going to best represent the rest of the 21st century. That has all sorts of complexities attached to it. But we've got to continue to be bold in creating a strategy going forward." (link)

Marshall has launched the $70M “All M” fundraising campaign aimed at improving every area within the athletic department. The Herd received the largest private gift in athletics history from OVP Health to kick off the campaign, though a specific amount has yet to be disclosed. Thundering Herd AD Christian Spears: “Establishing partnerships with community members who are deeply embedded within the fabric of our growth, who are committed to our long-term success, who believe in Marshall and what our presence means to Huntington and the community we are building and serving is paramount to our success. That's exactly what we have with the good people of OVP Health.” (link)

Kansas AD Travis Goff says the Jayhawks have seen a 50% increase in football season ticket sales, which is indicative of KU’s positive momentum across the entire department. Goff, in fact, cites momentum as one of the challenges facing the department: “Sometimes I think it’s easier to get momentum than it is to maintain and sustain momentum. So, we’re more — we’ve got good momentum, we’re excited about that, but how do you tend to that and nurture that and try and strike in every manner you can? And I think we feel the opportunity, and then therefore you feel kind of the pressure, to keep that momentum.” Another challenge KU – and most, if not all, athletic departments – face involves risk management due to the number of student-athletes, the business side of college athletics and being part of a higher education institution. “I think the risks are significant, and so, you can only do so much, probably, to be fully mitigating that. But I do know we talk a lot about how to manage the risk environment.” (link)

Boise State AD Jeremiah Dickey says the $40M Albertsons Stadium north end zone expansion project “ties into the design and allows us to maybe dream and figure out what else we could do in this space that would improve the experiences of those that are going to utilize it. Obviously, I’m a dreamer. You start off with, ‘Oh, a club and field level suites,’ but then you start asking more questions and curiously questioning like, ‘Well, what if we did something bigger and better for our nutrition program? What if we did something that that allowed us more square footage and partnerships with academic units on campus?’” (link)

Tennessee intends to pay $10.4M in fines to the NCAA as its penalty for recruiting violations under former Vols Football HC Jeremy Pruitt. If the NCAA agrees with UT’s interpretation of the fine, the entire $10.4M will be due in one payment, per the Knoxville News Sentinel’s Adam Sparks, who also notes the school will use unrestricted reserves to provide a bridge loan to athletics so the department doesn't run into cash flow problems. Money from the fines would go to the NCAA Student Assistance Fund. (link)
