ESPN’s Pete Thamel provides some additional nuggets on the AAC’s interest in adding Army West Point: “No decision is imminent, as both sides need to explore more details, sources said. [...] Other schools were discussed Friday, but none gained significant traction and only Army has received outreach from the AAC. One thing that will be important to Army is keeping the Navy game on the same date at the end of the college football calendar, which would likely mean it's a nonconference game.” (link)

FanNation Inside The Huskies’ Dan Raley suggests a few names for the AD opening at Washington: Oregon State AD Scott Barnes and Nevada AD Stephanie Rempe, both of whom previously served in Senior Assoc. AD roles for the Huskies; St. John’s AD Mike Cragg, who is a UW alum and Raley likes his experience with men’s hoops; and Raley points to UW connections for LSU AD Scott Woodward and former Iowa AD Gary Barta. Kansas AD Travis Goff reflects on the last two years of the realignment roller coaster: “I probably couldn’t feel better than I do right now. Honestly, I wouldn’t have been able to say that real honestly like a year or two years ago. I don’t even know if I would have been able to say with that kind of confidence a year ago. I think it would have been stretched, manufactured, exaggerated. Finally, in my tenure here now ... I feel like the Big 12 has taken off. I really do, and I’m not saying that to counter some kind of narrative or create a false narrative.” Could Goff see the Jayhawks somewhere other than the Big 12 in the future? “Those are such complex situations that I don’t think anybody could give an honest answer. You are talking so many variables. You are talking what’s best for the broader institution, right? It’s not just the athletics program. You’re talking fiscally if it makes sense, and there are not just obvious elements of the financials. So it’s a really complex question. But what I can tell you is we are really enjoying and embracing being members of such a strong conference right now. It has — far and away — never felt as good as it does right now for me as the athletic director ... being in the Big 12. ... We are focused on, ‘Man, how do we help make the Big 12 better and stronger? Then (second part) is: How do we become a or the leader in the Big 12?” (link)

CBS hoops headliner Matt Norlander argues the ACC’s additions of Stanford, Cal & SMU will compromise its hardcourt product: “Bloating to 18 teams means that a 20-game schedule is doable, but 22 brings more in-league opportunities. You'd have five teams play twice and 12 teams play once. The ACC should absolutely not do it. Eighteen schools means someone has to finish 18th, and 17th, and 16th. It doesn't strain logic to suggest those schools just might be Stanford, Cal and SMU. What you don't want to do is give the league more opportunities for Quad 3 and 4 games. Those are résumé-saggers and bring down your best teams. Having 18 teams guarantees you will litter your league with results that impede the objective of producing as many NCAA Tournament teams as possible.” More. (link)

Colorado sold $300K in future home game tickets yesterday following the win at TCU. Nebraska and Stanford are already sellouts and the other four home contests are “getting close to being sold out” per BuffZone’s Brian Howell. (link); Meanwhile in Memphis, Action Network’s Brett McMurphy reports: “Memphis' brilliant promotion resulted in nearly 200 $60 tickets sold for today's opener vs. Bethune-Cookman. If Tigers win, fans get free ticket to next home game & continues for each home game until Memphis loses at home.” (link); Also, Troy has set another season ticket record with 12,119 sold leading into yesterday’s opener against Stephen F. Austin. (link)

Iowa State football student-athlete Jake Remsburg is expecting a six-game NCAA suspension stemming from a gambling investigation, as first reported by the Des Moines Register. ESPN’s Pete Thamel got this from the university, which says it “has received the eligibility rulings from the NCAA's Student-Athlete Reinstatement (SAR) Committee and shared those with impacted student-athletes.” (link)

Disney hits back in the squabble with Charter Communications: “Contrary to their claims, we have offered Charter the most favorable terms on rates, distribution, packaging, advertising and more. We have proposed creative ways to make Disney’s direct-to-consumer services available to their Spectrum TV subscribers, including opportunities for new and flexible packages where those services become a focal point of what the consumer might choose. … We continue to invest in original content that premieres exclusively on our linear networks, including live sports, news and appointment viewing programming. Likewise, on our direct-to-consumer services, we make multi-billion-dollar investments in exclusive content, which is incremental to our linear networks. … We value our relationship with Charter and we are ready to get back to the negotiation table to restore access to our unrivaled content to their customers as quickly as possible.” (link)

College is becoming an increasingly tractable path for athletes who want to play professional tennis, as USA Today’s Dan Wolken observes that this year’s U.S. Open men’s singles draw “included a fairly remarkable 20 college tennis alums along with seven in the women's singles draw.” TCU HC David Roditi tells Wolken: “I think it’s thriving right now. There’s a lot of people paying attention closely. In the U.S., we’ve always kind of known. I think the difference now is internationally, they’re starting to notice.” Kentucky HC Cedric Kauffmann estimates that a player turning pro out of high school would need to budget for roughly $70K in travel expenses and another $100K if they are taking a private coach out on tour with them for a year. For many players, this is simply cost-prohibitive, and Kauffmann notes: “Sometimes it comes in waves in our sport, but in the last few years its been a big wave. I think it has put us at least in a better position on the recruiting trail to recruit some of the best in the world for us to be attractive enough for them to listen. Sometimes we go recruiting and want to tell them about college, but they don’t quite understand it or don’t want to talk about it.” More from Wolken. (link)

Coastal Carolina Chair of Athletics/Executive Advisor to the President Joe Moglia in a guest column for Sportico tips his cap to NCAA President Charlie Baker for attempting to right the ship now, but posits that the “NCAA abdicated its responsibility when NIL took effect prior to his arrival—even though it was the most significant thing to happen to college sports in decades.” Moglia then asks: “Why would an institution willingly bring in the government to help solve its problems? I can’t think of any private institutions or businesses that would want to do that. Yet that is the point we have arrived at.” Of the current legislative proposals, Moglia believes the draft legislation sponsored by U.S. Senators Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) “has the most merits” but still “fails to fully deliver a solution in key areas of the NIL dilemma. To truly fix NIL, we need the total package.” In the absence of a federal NIL standard, Moglia argues there’s no reason why the universities “can’t act in place of the booster collectives. … If the universities become involved in directing money beyond scholarships—such as NIL deals—to athletes, then they might very well be considered employees. This isn’t a problem, although a more appropriate term would be something like professional student athletes. The best part of this would be that if the schools step up, outside oversight from the FTC or the proposed CAC wouldn’t be necessary.” (link)

North Carolina Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Marielle vanGelder and Drexel Chief of Staff/Senior Assoc. AD Mary Mulvenna sit down with former ACC Director of Compliance Marra Hvozdovic to discuss leadership through the lens of compliance. Mulvenna and vanGelder share insight into how they developed their leadership philosophies before reflecting on changes they’ve experienced in the post-COVID workplace and offering advice to early-career professionals on how to practice leadership from any role. On the latter topic, vanGelder advises those starting their careers to “show up and do your job but then take on whatever anybody is willing to give you. Take advantage of those opportunities. … I look for people who want to do more, who want to be more, who don't want to just settle for the position that they're in.” Mulvenna adds: “Advice I was given to me early on was grow where you’re planted, right? And it's you know going above and beyond and you're going to get recognized because I think leaders will see your ability to take things on and give you more and more and then you'll start to ascend pretty quickly.” Lots more in the full conversation on AthleticDirectorU. As The World Realigns…
+ The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel writes on where Oregon State & Washington State go from here, wonders if the Beavers & Cougars could proceed with a two-member Pac-12 given significant revenues still owed to the conference (though it’s also a party on a number of notable lawsuits): “NCAA bylaws require a conference to have at least eight members — but there is a two-year grace period to get back to that number. Silly as it sounds, the Pac-12 could theoretically operate as a two-team conference in 2024-25 and 2025-26, with Oregon State and Washington State largely making their own schedules. In other words: Stall. [...] But if nothing else, 2026 is also when the Mountain West’s current deals with Fox and CBS expire, at which point all those schools become free agents.” (link)
+ Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger adds from his detailed timeline of events that the ACC engaged Arizona, Arizona State, Cal, Stanford and Utah on August 1 in serious conversations about expansion; however, Arizona, ASU and Utah moved quickly to the Big 12 after Oregon and Washington bolted for the Big Ten due to more intense discussions over months and geography. Negotiations with Cal and Stanford as well as the four original ACC dissenters continued with Commissioner Jim Phillips presenting a new financial model last week and NC State leadership changing its vote “as early as last weekend.” (link)
+ Stanford AD Bernard Muir tells The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach that based on what he knows as of now, the Cardinal football game against Notre Dame will continue to be played on an annual basis and will count as a non-conference game. (link)
+ SMU held an impromptu party inside its football training facility with chants of “A-C-C” ringing out. (link)
+ The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner: “The contract is not public, but over the course of the contract, the Bears and Cardinal could receive $10 million to $12 million less per year, on average, than the current ACC schools. That could create a substantial competitive disadvantage when it comes to critical resources like recruiting budgets and the salary pool for coaching staffs. Stanford will seek help from the university administration and its wealthy donor base. Cal could receive assistance from the UC regents, who have the authority to impose a so-called Berkeley tax on UCLA by which the Bruins would use some of their revenue from Big Ten membership to support Cal.” (link)
+ The News & Observer’s Luke DeCock: “Rather than wait, from a position of relative strength, to see if the college-athletics bubble burst and made the ACC’s long-term television deal more attractive to Clemson and Florida State, the other members of the league panicked and assured their eventual exit, and North Carolina’s as well. By planning for disaster, in the most tortured and short-sighted way possible, they ensured it. Ensuring the inevitable departure of its three most valuable schools, adding three athletically irrelevant ones while oozing across two more time zones like spilled milk, and getting a relatively insignificant financial boost for doing it, the panicking presidents turned the ACC into an overgrown AAC.” Given NC State’s purported deciding vote, DeCock adds: “Whatever hopes N.C. State may have had of UNC taking them along if and when the End Times come went right out the window then; (Chancellor Randy) Woodson all but condemned his own school to future second-tier status. So, for that matter, did Duke and Wake Forest, acting out of fear of something that wasn’t even guaranteed to happen, clinging to dollars that are an order of magnitude short of making a real difference in the athletics arms race.” Lots more. (link)
+ USA Today’s Dan Wolken: “The existential problem with college sports is that unlike the pro leagues, conferences and schools treat each other like competitors rather than business partners when it comes to the big stuff. Instead of making decisions that put the interests of the overall business first, college presidents and commissioners focus on what’s good for their fiefdoms and make the necessary apologies later. That system has created a 40-year see-saw of winners and losers, which isn’t going to end until the most logical evolution: A model where the schools with the most television value band together and sell one big package to the networks for a huge payday, like the NFL does.” (link)

The D1.dossier for the AD opening at South Dakota is ready for those of you interested in the leadership gig in Vermillion. Up next: Stetson. I was able to use those hours to not only prepare my interview responses, but also to continue to do my current job at a high level. Undoubtedly, it helped me land my first AD opportunity, and furthermore, on the back end of the process, the D1.dossier information has helped me to be very effective the first thirty days in the chair.” (link)

The Wichita Eagle’s Kellis Robinett takes a look at Kansas State’s recent success under the direction of Wildcats AD Gene Taylor, who acknowledges: “There have been a lot more people that want to come up and congratulate me or just say, ‘Hey, great job,’ than I have ever experienced before.” Taylor goes on to note that “you’ve got to be careful with that, because this can be short-lived. But the thing I love about Kansas State is the pride our fans have. So when you have a year like we just had it means so much to them.” Baseball HC Pete Hughes on Taylor: “He is the true coaches’ AD. He is making decisions that are best for his coaches and his athletes. He’s not making any decisions based on Twitter or message boards or donor pressure. He is an absolute rarity these days at the Power 5 level. He puts all that other stuff to the side and focuses on what is truly important.” Full profile. (link)

Nevada AD Stephanie Rempe on football ticket sales: “I could not be more proud of the work that our ticket group has done. … Our expectation is that we’re going to have 16K tickets out for the Idaho game and continue to grow off that. Oregon State Men’s Basketball AHC Eric Reveno applies Sherry R Arnstein’s 1969 "A Ladder of Citizen Participation” to student-athletes’ current level of participation in college athletics. The ladder consists of eight rungs broken into three different groups. The “nonparticipation” group consists of therapy and manipulation; the “tokenism” group includes informing, consultation and placation; and the “citizen power” group is composed of partnership, delegated power and citizen control. Reveno posits that student-athletes fall within Tokenism’s middle. “Specifically, SAAC (Student Athlete Advisory Council) structure has moved them to the ‘Placation’ rung of the ladder. They have hit a glass ceiling between ‘Tokenism’ and ‘Citizen Power.’ The next step is for the SA’s to move to ‘Partnership.’ As Arnstein says, ‘Partnership can work most effectively when there is an organized power-base in the community to which the citizen leaders are account-able.’ I would propose that the NCAA needs to work to move SAAC from Placation to Partnership. We need to do this proactive organizational work to protect the long-term viability of the NCAA. It is not just about paying student-athletes.” (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel: “While waiting on an NCAA ruling for UNC's Tez Walker and others for tomorrow, here's some data the NCAA has sent out to its members today. For this year in *all sports*, 18% of the 81 waiver requests for second (or more) transfers have been approved.” The NCAA also urges members to submit waiver requests as early as possible due to the amount of time a review can take. (link)

Meanwhile, North Carolina Football HC Mack Brown on the NCAA’s handling of Tar Heels transfer wide receiver Tez Walker, whose final waiver decision still has not been rendered: ”I can’t express my disappointment in the NCAA [strongly] enough. … They say they're about helping kids, but all they've done is add to the very mental health issues Tez has been dealing with that made him want to get closer to home to begin with. You can't say you're about helping kids, and then show a total disregard for the kids you're supposed to be helping. It's clear they are about the process and not people.” (link)

MoffettNathanson on the Charter-Disney dispute: “For Disney, this appears to be a no-win moment in time. [Charter still makes] money on video. But not much, and they recognize that linear video is going to be a rapidly declining line of service under even the most optimistic scenarios, so the issue is arguably nothing more than when, not if, video goes away. … The future of the Pay TV bundle is at a critical moment with ESPN playing the starring role.” (link)

Barstool Sports CEO Erika Ayers Badan tells Sportico’s Eben Novy-Williams and Scott Soshnick that with the company losing $1M per month – as noted recently by Founder Dave Portnoy – it will become a little “more judicious” with the projects it chooses and adds: “Profitable growth is something that this company knows how to do. We didn’t need to think about it the last couple years, because we were thinking about growing a sportsbook, we were thinking about integrating into a bigger company. So the changes that I think you’ll see are going to be hard for us because it’s getting leaner, it’s getting more focused, it’s getting more disciplined.” Asked about her level of concern regarding uncertainty in the social media space, particularly regarding TikTok and X (Twitter), Ayers Badan says: “The bigger gating factor for us is that there’s an ever-changing sense of what the community guidelines are. Like, what’s permissible today on Facebook or what’s permissible today on Snapchat versus what was permissible yesterday.” (link)
