What would a news cycle be these days without at least one realignment nugget? This one from JohnCanzano.com’s namesake: “I think the best case for the Pac-2 is a reverse merger with the Mountain West, which already has CBS Sports Network and FOX as partners. This Pac-2 ‘rebuild’ may have semantics play on a lot of levels. Keep the brand. Keep the assets. Keep the Pac-12 Network in some form. The MWC media deal is up in 2026. At that point, you renegotiate.” (link)

Northwestern brought in former Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe & his Protection for All consulting team back in early August as the Wildcats continue to respond to widely-reported hazing allegations. Wildcats AD Derrick Gragg: “It was an intensive three-hour-session and [the consultants] said after about the first 10, 15 minutes, guys were relaxed, participating, understanding what they were supposed to do, and did everything that they were asked to do. I think everybody understands the importance of conducting themselves in a first-class manner, as it relates to being representatives of themselves, and their families and to this university. I think they took it very seriously.” Gragg also talked to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg about pushback on his leadership decisions over the past couple of months: “When you're in a position like this, leadership on this level, you have to come to expect scrutiny, criticism. There's a lot of emotion, again, a lot of relationships that are tied into this situation, and I understand that. ... At the end of the day, whether people are supportive of the leadership or not, or the decisions that were made, I always go right back to the student-athletes. They really need our support right now. Their lives have changed dramatically.” More. (link)

LSU AD Scott Woodward talks about his run of hiring head coaches who quickly won national championships (Baseball, Women’s Basketball): “Sometimes, you hit it just right, and the timing is just right. There is no algorithm to it. I've always been, 'Why not take a shot?' And when you're at LSU, that takes on even more meaning when you look at everything that's in place here to win championships.” Tiger Football HC Brain Kelly hopes to join the duo of Baseball’s Jay Johnson & Women’s Basketball’s Kim Mulkey, compares the attitude in Baton Rouge to his time at Notre Dame: “I loved my time at Notre Dame. I have nothing but great memories there. But the whole landscape there is different than it is here. It just is. There are priorities at Notre Dame. The architectural building needed to get built first. They ain't building the architectural building here first. We're building the athletic training facility first, [and] we're in the midst of a $22 million addition to our athletic training facility. It's something I said we needed, and we went and immediately raised the money.” (link)

Buffalo AD Mark Alnutt Q&As with the Buffalo News’ Rachel Lenzi in a multi-part series. Alnutt points to progress in all corners of his department as he enters his sixth year leading the Bulls, also notes: “I want to see more. I want to see more support for our athletics program out in the community. When I say that, I’m not saying there’s no support, because there is support, but, again, just that folks realize that ‘hey, we’re one of 130-plus FBS programs in the nation,’ and I feel that we continue to trend that way.” On his Football program: “One thing I’ve seen is that (HC Maurice Linguist) is willing to adapt and grow. This is UB-specific, but a lot of these Group of Five programs, you have turnover and transition through assistant coaches, as well. When that happens, you have to identify who’s that next person that might come in or might be elevated in your staff.” (link)

We’re not quite through a full Week 1 of football, but early data from the clock changes are trending toward, not surprisingly, fewer overall snaps. UCLA HC Chip Kelly: “But this new rule is, um, it’s crazy. We had four drives in the first half. This game goes fast. Hope you guys are selling a lot of commercials!” Indiana HC Tom Allen: “When you think about the reasons why they’re doing it, you know, obviously we all know from a practical perspective they’re not going to cut out the commercials. Because that’s how things are financed.” Sports Illustrated’s Richard Johnson: “I think a thing people are missing about this is especially if you're at a significant talent disadvantage you can use the rules to help you shorten the game *on purpose*.” (link, link)

Michigan State Football HC Mel Tucker tells the Lansing State Journal’s Graham Couch that the Spartans “weren't really in the NIL game until the last recruiting class” and are therefore a “recruiting class behind.” Asked how much is needed annually to compete in the NIL race, Tucker responds: “I don't know what that number is. I just know it just boggles my mind how there can be an expectation to compete at the highest level, but not be at the highest level in other areas. I don't know how you do that. … I don't know how we can expect to win the Big Ten and get in the playoffs and win a national championship if we don't have the best players. I don't know how you do that. So we're moving in the right direction with facilities. NIL is a big issue right now. You've got teams in this conference spending $12, $13 million a year on NIL. We're not even close to that. So it's a dogfight.” (link)

Kentucky Men’s Basketball HC John Calipari shares his thoughts on how to fix the transfer portal, telling ESPN that “we had over 800 players not receive scholarships. … You have 700 freshmen put their name in, 48% of those did not get scholarships. I think most college coaches that I know are holding back scholarships for young people because ‘We may get a transfer, we better have one – midseason, better have one.’ That means another 300 to 500 young people not getting Division I scholarships. We can do better. I'm saying let's go back to five years to play four. You can transfer without penalty once. After that, you’ve got to play that last year. If you get hurt, you want to redshirt, you can do all that. You play five years only one way, you go to a school and you stay all four years, that school can give you a fifth year. Reward the kids that are staying. But we’ve got 26- and 27-year-olds playing against 18-year-olds right now, and it's filtered into the name image and likeness deal so that's why I'm saying five to play four, I think it solves 50-60% of the issues we're having right now.” (link)

Forbes’ Tim Newcomb takes a look at TendedBar’s debut at Texas’ Darrell K Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium and Texas A&M’s Kyle Field this fall. Each TendedBar location, which can be mobile, is 10 feet long and can hold up to 10 different liquors or wines at 20 liters each, a total of 200 liters of beverage, all mixable on site, and CEO Justin Honeysuckle tells Newcomb: “The NCAA is an untapped market. It is a perfect fit to wheel a mobile machine in and take an area that was unutilized before and transform it with liquor. … Others have tried to dispense cocktails before, but nobody has done it the way we are doing it on the technology side. Using a keg-based system, there’s no changing out of bottles, and Honeysuckle notes that in the event you do have to “restock Tito’s because you went through 20 liters of Tito’s, that is a good problem for one bar to have.” The ability to do in-bar mixing also allows teams to create specialty drinks for events, as Newcomb points out that during a recent Jacksonville Jaguars preseason game, the team created the Teal Lemonade that offered a mix of blue curacao, ginger ale, lemonade and vodka together in a teal-colored lemonade drink.” Additionally, each bar can get wrapped by a sponsor, either physically or digitally. Texas A&M’s debut will include sponsored bars with Twisted Tea, Madam Pelata, Archer Roose Wine and TX Whiskey. (link)

A new study published in JAMA Neurology finds that among 152 deceased contact sports participants (where the mean age was 22.97 and 141 subjects were male), “CTE was diagnosed in 63. … Of the 63 brain donors diagnosed with CTE, 60 were diagnosed with mild CTE (stages I or II). Brain donors who had CTE were more likely to be older. Of the 63 athletes with CTE, 45 (71.4%) were men who played amateur sports, including American football, ice hockey, soccer, rugby, and wrestling; one woman with CTE played collegiate soccer. For those who played football, duration of playing career was significantly longer in those with vs without CTE (mean difference 2.81 years). … Cognitive and neurobehavioral symptoms were frequent among all brain donors. Suicide was the most common cause of death, followed by unintentional overdose; there were no differences in cause of death or clinical symptoms based on CTE status.” The study concludes that “young brain donors exposed to repetitive head impacts were highly symptomatic regardless of CTE status, and the causes of symptoms in this sample are likely multifactorial. Future studies that include young brain donors unexposed to repetitive head impacts are needed to clarify the association among exposure, white matter and microvascular pathologic findings, CTE, and clinical symptoms.” (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel provides some additional nuggets on the AAC’s interest in adding Army West Point: “No decision is imminent, as both sides need to explore more details, sources said. [...] Other schools were discussed Friday, but none gained significant traction and only Army has received outreach from the AAC. One thing that will be important to Army is keeping the Navy game on the same date at the end of the college football calendar, which would likely mean it's a nonconference game.” (link)

Kansas AD Travis Goff reflects on the last two years of the realignment roller coaster: “I probably couldn’t feel better than I do right now. Honestly, I wouldn’t have been able to say that real honestly like a year or two years ago. I don’t even know if I would have been able to say with that kind of confidence a year ago. I think it would have been stretched, manufactured, exaggerated. Finally, in my tenure here now ... I feel like the Big 12 has taken off. I really do, and I’m not saying that to counter some kind of narrative or create a false narrative.” Could Goff see the Jayhawks somewhere other than the Big 12 in the future? “Those are such complex situations that I don’t think anybody could give an honest answer. You are talking so many variables. You are talking what’s best for the broader institution, right? It’s not just the athletics program. You’re talking fiscally if it makes sense, and there are not just obvious elements of the financials. So it’s a really complex question. But what I can tell you is we are really enjoying and embracing being members of such a strong conference right now. It has — far and away — never felt as good as it does right now for me as the athletic director ... being in the Big 12. ... We are focused on, ‘Man, how do we help make the Big 12 better and stronger? Then (second part) is: How do we become a or the leader in the Big 12?” (link)

CBS hoops headliner Matt Norlander argues the ACC’s additions of Stanford, Cal & SMU will compromise its hardcourt product: “Bloating to 18 teams means that a 20-game schedule is doable, but 22 brings more in-league opportunities. You'd have five teams play twice and 12 teams play once. The ACC should absolutely not do it. Eighteen schools means someone has to finish 18th, and 17th, and 16th. It doesn't strain logic to suggest those schools just might be Stanford, Cal and SMU. What you don't want to do is give the league more opportunities for Quad 3 and 4 games. Those are résumé-saggers and bring down your best teams. Having 18 teams guarantees you will litter your league with results that impede the objective of producing as many NCAA Tournament teams as possible.” More. (link)

Colorado sold $300K in future home game tickets yesterday following the win at TCU. Nebraska and Stanford are already sellouts and the other four home contests are “getting close to being sold out” per BuffZone’s Brian Howell. (link); Meanwhile in Memphis, Action Network’s Brett McMurphy reports: “Memphis' brilliant promotion resulted in nearly 200 $60 tickets sold for today's opener vs. Bethune-Cookman. If Tigers win, fans get free ticket to next home game & continues for each home game until Memphis loses at home.” (link); Also, Troy has set another season ticket record with 12,119 sold leading into yesterday’s opener against Stephen F. Austin. (link)

Disney hits back in the squabble with Charter Communications: “Contrary to their claims, we have offered Charter the most favorable terms on rates, distribution, packaging, advertising and more. We have proposed creative ways to make Disney’s direct-to-consumer services available to their Spectrum TV subscribers, including opportunities for new and flexible packages where those services become a focal point of what the consumer might choose. … We continue to invest in original content that premieres exclusively on our linear networks, including live sports, news and appointment viewing programming. Likewise, on our direct-to-consumer services, we make multi-billion-dollar investments in exclusive content, which is incremental to our linear networks. … We value our relationship with Charter and we are ready to get back to the negotiation table to restore access to our unrivaled content to their customers as quickly as possible.” (link)

College is becoming an increasingly tractable path for athletes who want to play professional tennis, as USA Today’s Dan Wolken observes that this year’s U.S. Open men’s singles draw “included a fairly remarkable 20 college tennis alums along with seven in the women's singles draw.” TCU HC David Roditi tells Wolken: “I think it’s thriving right now. There’s a lot of people paying attention closely. In the U.S., we’ve always kind of known. I think the difference now is internationally, they’re starting to notice.” Kentucky HC Cedric Kauffmann estimates that a player turning pro out of high school would need to budget for roughly $70K in travel expenses and another $100K if they are taking a private coach out on tour with them for a year. For many players, this is simply cost-prohibitive, and Kauffmann notes: “Sometimes it comes in waves in our sport, but in the last few years its been a big wave. I think it has put us at least in a better position on the recruiting trail to recruit some of the best in the world for us to be attractive enough for them to listen. Sometimes we go recruiting and want to tell them about college, but they don’t quite understand it or don’t want to talk about it.” More from Wolken. (link)

Coastal Carolina Chair of Athletics/Executive Advisor to the President Joe Moglia in a guest column for Sportico tips his cap to NCAA President Charlie Baker for attempting to right the ship now, but posits that the “NCAA abdicated its responsibility when NIL took effect prior to his arrival—even though it was the most significant thing to happen to college sports in decades.” Moglia then asks: “Why would an institution willingly bring in the government to help solve its problems? I can’t think of any private institutions or businesses that would want to do that. Yet that is the point we have arrived at.” Of the current legislative proposals, Moglia believes the draft legislation sponsored by U.S. Senators Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) “has the most merits” but still “fails to fully deliver a solution in key areas of the NIL dilemma. To truly fix NIL, we need the total package.” In the absence of a federal NIL standard, Moglia argues there’s no reason why the universities “can’t act in place of the booster collectives. … If the universities become involved in directing money beyond scholarships—such as NIL deals—to athletes, then they might very well be considered employees. This isn’t a problem, although a more appropriate term would be something like professional student athletes. The best part of this would be that if the schools step up, outside oversight from the FTC or the proposed CAC wouldn’t be necessary.” (link)

North Carolina Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Marielle vanGelder and Drexel Chief of Staff/Senior Assoc. AD Mary Mulvenna sit down with former ACC Director of Compliance Marra Hvozdovic to discuss leadership through the lens of compliance. Mulvenna and vanGelder share insight into how they developed their leadership philosophies before reflecting on changes they’ve experienced in the post-COVID workplace and offering advice to early-career professionals on how to practice leadership from any role. On the latter topic, vanGelder advises those starting their careers to “show up and do your job but then take on whatever anybody is willing to give you. Take advantage of those opportunities. … I look for people who want to do more, who want to be more, who don't want to just settle for the position that they're in.” Mulvenna adds: “Advice I was given to me early on was grow where you’re planted, right? And it's you know going above and beyond and you're going to get recognized because I think leaders will see your ability to take things on and give you more and more and then you'll start to ascend pretty quickly.” Lots more in the full conversation on AthleticDirectorU.
