Our Lady of the Lake names IU Kokomo AD Tom Norris to the same position with the Saints, starting October 2. President Abel Chávez: “Aside from his strengths in athletic program development, Tom has impressive experience in athletic policy development and implementation, fundraising, community partnership, promotions and budget and staff management. I am confident he will provide strong leadership for athletics.” (link)

Carroll will add turf and lights as part of its Nelson Stadium Enhancement, which launches with a $5M fundraising goal. President Dr. John Cech: “Nelson Stadium is a significant asset for Carroll and Helena and frankly it sits idle the vast majority of the time. Presently, it is used for five Carroll home football games, home soccer matches, Helena and Capital High School graduation ceremonies, and a few other activities. However, this initiative will greatly increase the frequency with which this wonderful facility is utilized. [...] This significant investment into Nelson Stadium is taking Carroll to a new level and we are taking Helena with us! We recognize that this will not only substantially elevate the student-athlete experience at Carroll but it is also an enhancement which will greatly benefit our students, alumni, fans, and community partners.” (link)

Madonna’s plans to build a football stadium on campus have hit pause and may be ultimately scrapped, per The Detroit News’ Tony Paul, who reports initial plans of a 5K-seat, $10M+ facility with Gold Star Detroit FC footing the bill were quickly scaled back to a 2,500-seat venue in the $7-8M range. AD/Men’s Basketball HC Noel Emenhiser: "We had the space, we had the location, but we did not have the funds internally to do that project. We still have the space and we still have the location. Madonna, we kept every part of our agreement. I think there still would be hope that we could find a way to do it together, but at the moment, we're not building at the moment. Our hope is in the not-too-distant future, we can be playing football on campus. […] I don't know what the barriers were on their end. We had hoped to be playing on campus, and the fact that's not happening certainly isn't what anybody wanted. That's a disappointment." D1.relocation announces its full launch into the marketplace after already simplifying the relocation process for dozens of families in college athletics over the past year. Notably, former USC Upstate (NCAA DI) AD Daniel Feig will serve as the company’s COO. Feig: “I understand the challenges of relocating from both the employer and new employee perspectives. I moved my own family four times in nine years. D1.relocation will simplify the transition for both parties.” The company points to a key value prop of a team of coaches’ spouses as its relocation specialists. Per the wife of an SEC (NCAA DI) football assistant coach: “The team at D1.relocation was so respectful and professional. They helped organize our moving and real estate needs. This was by far our family's most organized relocation.” (link)

Another NIL bill hits the docket in D.C., this one from Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), which according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, “prohibits collectives from entering into NIL deals with athletes until they are enrolled in school for 90 days, outlaws tampering with other teams’ athletes and creates a public-facing database of figures from NIL deals across college sports. In maybe the most interesting and unique section of the FAIR College Sports Act, the draft targets collectives, requiring them to register with an independent third party responsible for overseeing NIL called the United States Intercollegiate Athletic Committee (USIAC). As part of the registration process, collectives would have to disclose their registry of donors.” Lots more in the full bill. (link)

Central Christian taps prep coach Brad Willems as Women’s Basketball HC. Tiger AD Kyle Moody: “We have hired a home grown coach from right here in McPherson. Throughout the search process we were really looking for a coach that loves Jesus, knows basketball and knows the local area well so that that person could recruit local Kansas players.” (link)

Under a rule proposed by the Biden administration, workers who make ~$55K a year or less would be eligible for overtime by default, an increase from the previous threshold of $35,568.  Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su: “A cornerstone of workers’ rights in this country is the right to a 40-hour workweek [and] the promise that you get to go home after 40 hours or you get higher pay. I’ve heard from workers again and again about working long hours, for no extra pay.” (link)

A new study published in JAMA Neurology finds that among 152 deceased contact sports participants (where the mean age was 22.97 and 141 subjects were male), “CTE was diagnosed in 63. … Of the 63 brain donors diagnosed with CTE, 60 were diagnosed with mild CTE (stages I or II). Brain donors who had CTE were more likely to be older. Of the 63 athletes with CTE, 45 (71.4%) were men who played amateur sports, including American football, ice hockey, soccer, rugby, and wrestling; one woman with CTE played collegiate soccer. For those who played football, duration of playing career was significantly longer in those with vs without CTE (mean difference 2.81 years). … Cognitive and neurobehavioral symptoms were frequent among all brain donors. Suicide was the most common cause of death, followed by unintentional overdose; there were no differences in cause of death or clinical symptoms based on CTE status.” The study concludes that “young brain donors exposed to repetitive head impacts were highly symptomatic regardless of CTE status, and the causes of symptoms in this sample are likely multifactorial. Future studies that include young brain donors unexposed to repetitive head impacts are needed to clarify the association among exposure, white matter and microvascular pathologic findings, CTE, and clinical symptoms.” (link)
