Women Leaders in College Sports is evolving to Women Leaders in Sports. Pittsburgh AD/Women Leaders President and Board Chair Heather Lyke: "This is more than a mere name change. It is a brand evolution that reflects the impressive growth and impact our organization continues to have on women leaders beyond the collegiate athletics space. The advancement of women’s sports in terms of participation, investment, and attention is at historic highs. The time is right for our organization to broaden our impact to engage, inspire, and develop women in leadership at all levels of sports and society at large.” (link)

SMU AD Rick Hart on the Mustangs joining the ACC without taking media rights distributions for up to nine years: “I'm gonna leave some mystery around all that. I don't think it's as simple as people want to make it out to be. You can't forgo something you don't have. We're not going to take a step back resource-wise, even from a conference perspective. So this is all positive. ... We've got an underdog mentality. We've got a chip on our shoulder. We've had to do more with less for a long time." SMU Board of Trustees Chair David MIller, meanwhile, suggests some schools within the state might not be thrilled to see the Mustangs elevated to a Power 5 league. “We already recruit extremely well. The only thing that anybody could ever use against us in a recruiting battle is the fact that we're not Power 5." (link)

The Knight Commission has the Financial Projections through 2032 for Division I FBS Programs report based on a new analysis from financial services firm CliftonLarsonAllen, LLP (CLA), which used actual revenue and expense data, along with new projected revenue, to model a future financial landscape for the coming decade for public FBS athletics programs. CLA projects the total annual athletics revenues from all sources at FBS institutions to be $20.9B in 2032 with the 54 public Power 5 universities generating $16.7B. The report also identifies crossover points, which CLA defines as the point where compensation for 11 “countable” football coaches per school will exceed the total “athlete scholarships and medical expenses” for ALL college athletes across ALL sports at that school. Nine of the 51 P5 publics had already hit the crossover point as of FY22, including four in the SEC, three in the Big 12 and one each in the Big Ten and ACC. In FY32, CLA projects that 25 of the 54 will reach the crossover point. Also: “Based on historical trends, and the additional revenue projected to be generated by FBS schools in the next 10 years, severance pay for FBS football coaches, or so-called ‘dead money,’ is conservatively projected to jump to more than $175M annually in fiscal year 2032, from $98M in fiscal year 2022.” (link)

Knight Commission CEO Amy Perko tells ESPN’s Heather Dinich the report should make it "very clear" to university presidents that they need to direct their commissioners and ADs to develop "a more comprehensive plan on athletic spending” and adds: “It matters because college sports at the highest level is on a path to being totally incongruent with what presidents, what commissioners, what athletics directors say the mission is about. Presidents made the decision to expand the CFP understanding that this very successful event will generate more than a billion annually in new revenues, and they have not made any decisions to earmark those new and uncommitted revenues. That kind of decision-making needs to be done, because these projections show in the past the new revenues have flowed disproportionately to 11 football coaches. Unless presidents decide to manage the revenues differently, there's no reason to think that's not going to happen in the future. … The solutions are well within the presidents' authority to fix without federal legislation." The NCAA Board of Governors adds Central Arkansas President Houston Davis as one of its four DI voting members and Boston Celtics VP of Team Operations and Organizational Growth Allison Feaster as one of its two independent voting members. Baylor President/Board of Governors Chair Linda Livingstone: “Their combination of experience in higher education and athletics will be valuable as the Association continues to evolve and emphasize providing a world-class athletics and academic experience for our student-athletes." An NCAA survey of compliance directors across all divisions finds that 27% of autonomy schools have dealt with a sports wagering problem among student-athletes or staff within the past year. A similar percentage of autonomy conference compliance administrators indicate they were aware of athletes on their campus being harassed online or in person by someone with a gambling interest in their games. Overall, the survey found that some form of sports wagering education is occurring for student-athletes, coaches and athletics administrators at more than 95% of DI schools, with most programs focusing on NCAA bylaws, laws and rules regarding inside information and sports betting terminology. Athletes.org Co-Founder/Chairman Jim Cavale joins the Petcash Pod to talk about the trajectory of the college sports industry and the foundation of AO. “I don't know how fast college athletics leaders are going to be able to implement what's in the [Transformation Committee] report because it's going to require a different allocation of investments across their athletic department, and I think there's a way to start helping on this from the outside now. We are building an organization that will stand as a non-profit and provide a lot of these things in the Transformation Committee report with no member dues, absolutely free to any college athlete directly to the athlete without the school needing to pay or be involved.” Cavale goes on to remark that the trust has broken down over the years between college athletes and their schools. “We’ve got to admit that. How? Look at the Pac-12 realignment.” Cavale also asserts that “this is our chance – and when I say ‘our’ I mean the college athletes, the ADs, the coaches, the presidents – this is our chance to get it right, and we've got a very short period of time to do so.” Full podcast. The West Virginia Faculty Assembly approved a vote of no confidence in President Gordon Gee. Prior to the vote, Gee addressed the faculty and said: “I have great faith in this university. I have great faith in all of you and I think that in the end, we’ll be a better institution but we’ll proceed forward with what we’re doing right now and I think we’ll strengthen our institution in doing so.” The assembly passed a second resolution calling on the WVU Board of Governors to freeze the academic review process. The board subsequently released a statement affirming it “unequivocally supports the leadership of President Gee and the strategic repositioning of WVU and rejects the multiple examples of misinformation that informed these resolutions. The University is transforming to better reflect the needs of today, and we must continue to act boldly. President Gee has shown time and again he is not afraid to do the difficult work required.” (link)

Ball State has introduced several new fan experiences for football games this season, including the new Student Experience tailgating area, the Cardinal Walk, Charlie’s Kids Club and new premium seating and concourse enhancements. The latter features a “series of luxury outdoor suites that replicate the suite experience elsewhere in the stadium. Equipped with a bar to satisfy four tented suites beneath the stadium videoboard, each suite includes couches and seating for up to 12 fans, a catered menu and an unobstructed view of the action, just above the grassy berm beyond the north endzone.” (link)

Collectives Corner…
+ The Oregon State-focused Dam Nation collective has launched a $1M fundraising challenge with support from an anonymous donor who will match that amount dollar-for-dollar. Dam Nation Co-Founder Kyle Bjornstad: “Given the recent developments across the collegiate athletics landscape, including the Pac-12, we believe OSU Athletics is a program fans across America are embracing. This challenge is a spark that can rally Beaver Nation – and college sports fans everywhere – to support student-athletes who truly deserve it during these times.” (link)
