Wasbhurn has received a $1M donation from the Capitol Federal Foundation to fund a two-phase renovation for Lee Arena that will bring a new court, upgraded seating and technology, new sports medicine space, renovated locker rooms and more. (link)

The NCAA Board of Governors adds Boston Celtics VP of Team Operations and Organizational Growth Allison Feaster as one of its two independent voting members and Central Arkansas (DI) President Houston Davis as one of its four DI voting members. Baylor (DI) President/Board of Governors Chair Linda Livingstone: “Their combination of experience in higher education and athletics will be valuable as the Association continues to evolve and emphasize providing a world-class athletics and academic experience for our student-athletes." An NCAA survey of compliance directors across all divisions finds that 3% of DII schools have dealt with a sports wagering problem among student-athletes or staff within the past year. Overall, the survey found that some form of sports wagering education is occurring for student-athletes, coaches and athletics administrators at 75% of DII schools, with most programs focusing on NCAA rules and sports betting terminology. As for how concerned DII compliance directors are about gambling, 57% are somewhat or slightly concerned and 27% not concerned at all, with some noting that “sports wagering falls at the bottom of the importance list. Academic eligibility, drug testing, sexual violence and mental health are the priorities,” and another commenting: “The sheer access of wagering activities available with technology is IMPOSSIBLE to monitor or track.” (link)

West Liberty will grow its sport sponsorship to 19 in 2024-25 with the addition of Women’s Wrestling. President Dr. Tim Borchers: “Adding women’s wrestling will build on the national reputation of the West Liberty wrestling program. With the growing popularity of the sport, this new program will provide additional opportunities for students throughout the region to continue their education.” AD Lynn Ullom: “We wouldn’t be doing our due diligence if we weren’t constantly strategizing how to aid enrollment goals for the university while providing new pathways to success for the changing marketplace of student-athletes in our region.” Men’s Wrestling HC Danny Irwin will transition to Director of Wrestling and a Women’s Wrestling HC will be hired. In a piece for the Chronicle of Higher Education that focuses on the benefits to small colleges of adding sports, Lynchburg (DIII) VP for Enrollment, Marketing and Communications Aaron Basko asks and answers: “Is creating new athletics programs and expanding enrollment and the number of athletes on campus a magic bullet for small colleges? Probably not. There are a limited number of viable new sports to add, especially if colleges only consider those that do not come with a high price tag for new facilities. Coaches can also expand roster sizes only so much before their programs become unmanageable, or until their players become disgruntled at the lack of playing time and transfer or drop out. The other factor to consider is campus culture. When institutions become dominated by athletes, nonathletes can begin to feel like second-class citizens, which can hurt retention. There is a limit to how far colleges can ride the horse. At the same time, an enrollment-focused athletics strategy can be a big help to institutions on the margins, and can be particularly helpful in down markets. [...] As colleges revamp their student-success programs, sports can help. Athletes tend to stay enrolled at higher rates than nonathletes — they have stronger reasons to stay at the institution.  [...] Increasing revenue through retention can be just as important as raising revenue through adding new students.” (link)

Anderson SID Randy Jones pens his perspective on the role as he exits after 14 years, writing: “I haven't embraced the rising – and often unrealistic – expectations that many school administrations have placed on SIDs or athletic communicators. I have been very fortunate to work alongside some tremendously dedicated and talented people who have understood what we do and how we do it, but that isn't always the case. Over the past few years, quality people have left the profession in droves because of the unrealistic expectations caused by additional responsibilities and schools trying to boost school enrollment by adding sport after sport without adding support personnel. We can't properly do our jobs without the people on the other end being able to do theirs, and a lot of places are simply overloaded. […] Unfortunately, a lot of resources and most of the focus now is on the hype, seven-second video clips and poorly-worded social media posts, which are a lot of flash and not much substance. No one has time - or wants to - or has the ability - to write the student-athletes' stories anymore. Record-keeping, accurate stats and history aren't a priority – until they aren't there.” (link)

Another NIL bill hits the docket in D.C., this one from Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL), which according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, “prohibits collectives from entering into NIL deals with athletes until they are enrolled in school for 90 days, outlaws tampering with other teams’ athletes and creates a public-facing database of figures from NIL deals across college sports. In maybe the most interesting and unique section of the FAIR College Sports Act, the draft targets collectives, requiring them to register with an independent third party responsible for overseeing NIL called the United States Intercollegiate Athletic Committee (USIAC). As part of the registration process, collectives would have to disclose their registry of donors.” Lots more. (link)

D1.relocation announces its full launch into the marketplace after already simplifying the relocation process for dozens of families in college athletics over the past year. Notably, former USC Upstate (DI) AD Daniel Feig will serve as the company’s COO. Feig: “I understand the challenges of relocation from both the employer and new employee perspectives. I moved my own family four times in nine years. D1.relocation will simplify the transition for both parties.” The company points to a key value prop of a team of coaches’ spouses as its relocation specialists. Per the wife of an SEC (DI) football assistant coach: “The team at D1.relocation was so respectful and professional. They helped organize our moving and real estate needs.
