Southern Connecticut State AD Chris Barker has resigned after two years leading the Owls to become the Senior Assoc. AD for Development & Revenue Generation at Northern Illinois (DI). Senior Assoc. AD/Director of Compliance Matt Letkowski will serve as Interim AD. (link, link)

West Georgia will transition to DI and join the Atlantic Sun starting in 2024-25. Extra Points publisher Matt Brown reports UWG, which currently sponsors 14 sports, would need to expand its portfolio as part of the reclassification process, and intends to bring back men’s indoor and outdoor track and may add additional women’s sports. Also from Brown: “Sources familiar with the ASUN’s thinking have told me that the conference does not have immediate plans to expand further, although industry sources outside of the ASUN have told me that the league has had, with varying degrees of formality and seriousness, conversations with multiple other DII programs, including football and non-football playing institutions.” (link)

Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale tells Fox News’ Joe Morgan that in providing support to student-athletes, the vast number of differences among not only student-athletes, but also institutions, presents the biggest challenge. “There are differences between schools in the same conference, let alone across Divisions I, II and III. There are also a lot of different sports. Football is a lot different than golf. So, we need to start getting athletes into their own chapters - what we call them at Athletes.org - based on the sport they play, based on the conference they’re in. And help equip them with the knowledge they need to create their consensus on where things should go. In all categories, not just employment or media revenue sharing, but medical coverage. A football athlete has a much different stance on his need for medical coverage versus a golfer." AO also provides a registry for student-athletes to verify agents and collectives as well as a background check system. “They can run a background check on anyone and get a 48-hour turnaround before they want to work with them or start talking to them. We want to bring accountability to all the different folks coming into this space trying to work with athletes." (link)

A new study published in JAMA Neurology finds that among 152 deceased contact sports participants (where the mean age was 22.97 and 141 subjects were male), “CTE was diagnosed in 63. … Of the 63 brain donors diagnosed with CTE, 60 were diagnosed with mild CTE (stages I or II). Brain donors who had CTE were more likely to be older. Of the 63 athletes with CTE, 45 (71.4%) were men who played amateur sports, including American football, ice hockey, soccer, rugby, and wrestling; one woman with CTE played collegiate soccer. For those who played football, duration of playing career was significantly longer in those with vs without CTE (mean difference 2.81 years). … Cognitive and neurobehavioral symptoms were frequent among all brain donors. Suicide was the most common cause of death, followed by unintentional overdose; there were no differences in cause of death or clinical symptoms based on CTE status.” The study concludes that “young brain donors exposed to repetitive head impacts were highly symptomatic regardless of CTE status, and the causes of symptoms in this sample are likely multifactorial. Future studies that include young brain donors unexposed to repetitive head impacts are needed to clarify the association among exposure, white matter and microvascular pathologic findings, CTE, and clinical symptoms.” (link)
