High-profile sexual violence prevention educator Brenda Tracy has accused Michigan State Football HC Mel Tucker of misconduct. MSU launched an investigation into Tracy’s claims back in December with hearings set for early next month. Tucker, in a March letter to investigators in connection to what he says was consensual phone sex between the two as their relationship developed: “Ms. Tracy’s distortion of our mutually consensual and intimate relationship into allegations of sexual exploitation has really affected me. I am not proud of my judgment and I am having difficulty forgiving myself for getting into this situation, but I did not engage in misconduct by any definition.” USA Today’s Kenny Jacoby with all the details. Following comments a few weeks back by Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark about Texas’ & Oklahoma’s exits, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey followed-up: “I spoke to both campuses right after. I’m sure Brett expects the PAC-12 to treat the four departing members respect as they leave. I know Texas & Oklahoma and myself expect that kind of respect to be reflected toward Oklahoma & Texas." Former Baylor Football HC Art Briles is the father-in-law of Oklahoma Offensive Coordinator Jeff Lebby and as such was at OU’s game against SMU last night and spent time with his family on the field after the game. Sooners AD Castiglione: I “was just as disappointed as many of our fans when I learned of the postgame situation tonight. It shouldn’t have happened and it was my expectation it never would, based on boundaries we previously set. I’ve addressed it with the appropriate staff.” OU HC Venables said the situation is “being dealt with.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner writes on how the Pac-12 & Pac-12 Networks plan to broadcast nearly 1,000 contests this school year amid an unknown future for its two staffs. Wilner: “Internally, conference executives are crafting two plans to navigate the next nine months, according to a source with knowledge of the situation: 1) A scope-of-services plan to determine which services should be continued as normal, downsized or eliminated. 2) An employee retention-and-severance plan to maintain the staffing necessary to support the athletes and produce the events that generate the media cash. (There are roughly 50 employees on the conference side and another 150 who work for the Pac-12 Networks.)” As part of their legal filing late last week, Oregon State & Washington State believe they & they alone now make up the conference board that can decide how to proceed with league business, including the broadcasting challenges. Wilner in closing: “Somehow, some way, the conference must find a compromise that allows for approval of the scope-of-services and employee retention-and-severance plans. The legal action might bring the board’s business to a halt, but it won’t stop essential staffers from looking for work.” (link)

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Benjamin Hochman profiles Missouri AD Desiree Reed-Francois. Hochman: “As the current Mizzou athletic department continues to make its march toward Southeastern Conference relevancy, one must know Mizzou has a brilliant and unwavering leader who is changing the game (and the game experience).” Reed-Francois, who took over in Columbia in August 2021, has helped Mizzou reach its first revenue surplus in more than five years and has taken a hands-on approach to revamping the gameday experience. Reed-Francois: “We’re not going to accept mediocrity …We work really hard because we owe that to our state and we owe that to our student-athletes. That’s the given in this equation. And we’re determined. Make no mistake about it, we belong in the Southeastern Conference. And we’re going to stay true to our core values, and we hire people with high-character, low-ego, high-outcome and energy. But yeah, make no mistake about it — we’re not here for a participation trophy. (link)

St. John’s Men’s Basketball HC Rick Pitino calls ongoing conference realignment “totally absurd” and says to ZagsBlog’s Adam Zagoria: “They don’t even care about women’s sports, minor sports. They’re just saying you’ve gotta travel, so everybody’s going to be sitting in an airport with their flight delayed while football and basketball are taking their private planes.” Pitino also praises the Big East for its longevity, noting that “in 40-plus years, teams have changed but the Big East model that Dave Gavitt built has remained intact. Playoffs at Madison Square Garden, it’s been traditionally a Catholic-school league except for Butler and UConn and it has not looked to expand.” (link)

+ Collegiate Consulting assisted West Georgia with a 266-page feasibility study as the Wolves considered a DI jump, which went official over the past week. Notably: “Collegiate Consulting projected UWG current athletic budget of $10.5 million would witness a 59% increase by FY2029. Student-athlete financial aid is projected to increase by 75 scholarships. Over the next six years, sports operating budgets will increase by nearly $1 million and is projected to add 8 – 10 positions, both administrative and coaches.” (link)
+ Oak View Group has formed Crown Properties Collection (CPC) with Madison Square Garden Entertainment and Sphere Entertainment. SBJ’s Bret McCormick reports the “new company will manage Sphere Entertainment and the MSG family of companies’ global partnership portfolio, including MSG Entertainment’s venues, productions, and live entertainment properties.” Former PGA Tour SVP for Business Development Jay Voelker will lead the new entity. OVG Founder/CEO Tim Leiweke: “This is a unique combination of assets, that are worldwide, that are all about facilities and live entertainment, and it just made sense to have that kind of reach, that kind of strength and that kind of global footprint. The breadth of our knowledge, our relationships, and our reputation, the international reach that we have is going to change dramatically the people that we talk to about the Garden, the Knicks, the Rangers, or The Sphere." More on the Oregon State/Washington State vs. the Pac-12 situation with Cougars AD Pat Chun saying of league leadership: “There is none. That’s why Washington State and Oregon State need to step in and provide it. [...] Time is of the essence to the institutions. It’s unacceptable to not have the transparency from which we can make an analysis. We need full clarity on the assets and liabilities.” Beavers AD Scott Barnes: “The temporary restraining order is not something we wanted to do, but we felt it was necessary in order to continue exploring the options we have.” A hearing is set for Monday. Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg joins Sellout Crowd’s Jenni Carlson to discuss several topics, including conference realignment. Weiberg notes that when the latest wave began in earnest with the departures of Oklahoma and Texas “there was nothing that we could do in that moment. It really was all of the work that we put into it over the last 15+ years and because that work had been done, I felt really really good about where we were positioned. … The word conference realignment has been used a lot but really what seems to be happening is some movement towards consolidation, whether that's conference consolidation or divisional consolidation or whatever you want to call it. And I think we're certainly seeing that. The way I was describing it is I feel like there's this sort of cut line, if you will. The cut line is going to continue to move north and so it's a matter of who stays above that cut line. So, for us the focus has always been what do we have to do to continue to position ourselves to be on the right side of that cut line as that cut line continues to move if it continues to move and it certainly appears that it is going to continue to move for the foreseeable future.” Weiberg observes that schools’ markets and brands are the two most relevant components as the landscape keeps shifting, and while OSU doesn’t have control of the state’s size and market, it does have control over its brand. “That is the strength, that’s what’s positioned Oklahoma State really well to be in the position that we’re in, and a lot of that starts with winning.” More. Kansas State AD Gene Taylor says the Wildcats have extended their apparel deal with Nike with “details of the contract coming out over the next few weeks.” Taylor also talks about the state of administrative staff compensation in Manhattan: “We actually have had the last three or four years an annual increase of about three percent across the board. And then we look at individuals and where are they from a market perspective? And do they need to go up at a foreign market if, as a staff, they're doing a great job. So we have given raises to a lot of our staff. And we know just like our coaches, we need to get our salaries up in all areas. And so as we continue to generate more revenue, whether it's through donations or season ticket sales, we will look to see how we put those dollars back into our staff, because we have got great staff. We need to keep them and it's competitive just as it is for coaches. People come after our staff because they're talented. We need to do everything we can to keep them and salary is a big part of that.” (link)

Burnout is an increasingly common problem among SIDs, Extra Points publisher Matt Brown observes. He cites as an example Anderson (DII) SID Randy Jones, who recently stepped down and said on his way out: “I haven't embraced the rising expectations that have been placed on SIDs or athletic communicators. … Over the past few years, quality people have left the profession in droves because of the expectations caused by additional responsibilities and the ever-expanding student-athlete number on campuses, they were simply overloaded. … Unfortunately, a lot of resources and most of the focus now is on hype – seven-second video clips and poorly worded social media posts, which are a lot of flash and not much substance. No one has the time – or wants to – or has the ability – to write student-athletes’ stories anymore.” Brown’s tweet has been quote-tweeted more than 100 times, mostly by people who agree with Jones, and Brown notes: “If we see mass burnout or disengagement of quality SIDs, the athlete experience and the fan experience will get worse. And in the long run, that will hurt far more than the dopamine rush of any viral tweet can help.” (link)

Nevada’s football season-ticket base is 7,790, which is a 10.7% uptick YoY, despite the Wolf Pack cutting the number of comped season tickets offered. This season’s base includes 5,402 paid season-ticket holders and 2,388 comped season tickets. Last year, Nevada's season-ticket base was 7,039, including 4,605 sold and 2,434 comped, marking a 17.3% bump in paid season tickets. This year’s base is the highest since 2018. (link)

CollegeAD reports on the details of LSU Women’s Basketball HC Kim Mulkey’s new 10-year, $32M contract, which includes a $2M buyout should either party terminate the deal without cause. Mulkey will earn $400K in base salary with supplemental compensation starting at $2.75M and increasing incrementally to $3.65M in the contract’s final year. Meanwhile, the Tigers will raise season ticket prices from $50 to $75 for the cheapest option. LSU expects the increases to bring in an additional $320K in revenue each year. (link)

Yesterday the NCAA ruled that SMU-to-Mississippi State graduate transfer Geor'quarius Spivey was ineligible this season because he enrolled in classes at TCU for the spring semester and then dropped them after the school’s drop deadline, something Spivey says he was instructed to do by an academic advisor. Bulldogs FB HC Zach Arnett: “We're talking about a guy who's graduated with his four-year degree. Look at the number of grad transfers playing across the country this year. Spivey graduated from TCU, obviously they played in the national title game, and so that goes into the second week of January. I think it's a joke. I think it's a joke that he's not being allowed to play his final year of eligibility. Because they're saying of some technicality, which TCU admitted that they had a flaw in their systems, and that they support him in his eligibility this year.” (link)

The Athletic’s David Ubben wonders why NIL deals are cloaked in such mystery and points out that many contracts with collectives come with NDAs. In fact, Tennessee football student-athlete Daevin Hobbs and his father, Dennis, tell Ubben they don’t even know how Dobbs’ deal compares with those of his teammates. SANIL CEO Jason Belzer explains that “once we bring in a school, we can say here’s your average payroll based on position, years, and we’re usually pretty accurate to what a kid is making. That doesn’t mean a school won’t come in and pay double because they really want that player.” Belzer goes on to say: “I would say I have the single best idea of market value in the world as it relates to NIL. … A kid comes in and thinks he’s worth X, and it’s a rude awakening when he realizes it’s not the reality. They’re just not real.” More. (link)

Sportico’s Matt Donnelly reports the “agency’s ruling triumvirate of Bryan Lourd, Kevin Huvane and Richard Lovett have all committed to remaining in leadership.” Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw adds that the deal values CAA at $7B. Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter’s Alex Weprin reports that Lourd will take over as CEO. (link, link)
