More on the Oregon State/Washington State vs. the Pac-12 situation with Cougars AD Pat Chun saying of league leadership: “There is none. That’s why Washington State and Oregon State need to step in and provide it. [...] Time is of the essence to the institutions. It’s unacceptable to not have the transparency from which we can make an analysis. We need full clarity on the assets and liabilities.” Beavers AD Scott Barnes: “The temporary restraining order is not something we wanted to do, but we felt it was necessary in order to continue exploring the options we have.” A hearing is set for Monday. Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg joins Sellout Crowd’s Jenni Carlson to discuss several topics, including conference realignment. Weiberg notes that when the latest wave began in earnest with the departures of Oklahoma and Texas “there was nothing that we could do in that moment. It really was all of the work that we put into it over the last 15+ years and because that work had been done, I felt really really good about where we were positioned. … The word conference realignment has been used a lot but really what seems to be happening is some movement towards consolidation, whether that's conference consolidation or divisional consolidation or whatever you want to call it. And I think we're certainly seeing that. The way I was describing it is I feel like there's this sort of cut line, if you will. The cut line is going to continue to move north and so it's a matter of who stays above that cut line. So, for us the focus has always been what do we have to do to continue to position ourselves to be on the right side of that cut line as that cut line continues to move if it continues to move and it certainly appears that it is going to continue to move for the foreseeable future.” Weiberg observes that schools’ markets and brands are the two most relevant components as the landscape keeps shifting, and while OSU doesn’t have control of the state’s size and market, it does have control over its brand. “That is the strength, that’s what’s positioned Oklahoma State really well to be in the position that we’re in, and a lot of that starts with winning.” More. Kansas State AD Gene Taylor says the Wildcats have extended their apparel deal with Nike with “details of the contract coming out over the next few weeks.” Taylor also talks about the state of administrative staff compensation in Manhattan: “We actually have had the last three or four years an annual increase of about three percent across the board. And then we look at individuals and where are they from a market perspective? And do they need to go up at a foreign market if, as a staff, they're doing a great job. So we have given raises to a lot of our staff. And we know just like our coaches, we need to get our salaries up in all areas. And so as we continue to generate more revenue, whether it's through donations or season ticket sales, we will look to see how we put those dollars back into our staff, because we have got great staff. We need to keep them and it's competitive just as it is for coaches. People come after our staff because they're talented. We need to do everything we can to keep them and salary is a big part of that.” (link)

Burnout is an increasingly common problem among SIDs, Extra Points publisher Matt Brown observes. He cites as an example Anderson (DII) SID Randy Jones, who recently stepped down and said on his way out: “I haven't embraced the rising expectations that have been placed on SIDs or athletic communicators. … Over the past few years, quality people have left the profession in droves because of the expectations caused by additional responsibilities and the ever-expanding student-athlete number on campuses, they were simply overloaded. … Unfortunately, a lot of resources and most of the focus now is on hype – seven-second video clips and poorly worded social media posts, which are a lot of flash and not much substance. No one has the time – or wants to – or has the ability – to write student-athletes’ stories anymore.” Brown’s tweet has been quote-tweeted more than 100 times, mostly by people who agree with Jones, and Brown notes: “If we see mass burnout or disengagement of quality SIDs, the athlete experience and the fan experience will get worse. And in the long run, that will hurt far more than the dopamine rush of any viral tweet can help.” (link)

Nevada’s football season-ticket base is 7,790, which is a 10.7% uptick YoY, despite the Wolf Pack cutting the number of comped season tickets offered. This season’s base includes 5,402 paid season-ticket holders and 2,388 comped season tickets. Last year, Nevada's season-ticket base was 7,039, including 4,605 sold and 2,434 comped, marking a 17.3% bump in paid season tickets. This year’s base is the highest since 2018. (link)

CollegeAD reports on the details of LSU Women’s Basketball HC Kim Mulkey’s new 10-year, $32M contract, which includes a $2M buyout should either party terminate the deal without cause. Mulkey will earn $400K in base salary with supplemental compensation starting at $2.75M and increasing incrementally to $3.65M in the contract’s final year. Meanwhile, the Tigers will raise season ticket prices from $50 to $75 for the cheapest option. LSU expects the increases to bring in an additional $320K in revenue each year. (link)

Yesterday the NCAA ruled that SMU-to-Mississippi State graduate transfer Geor'quarius Spivey was ineligible this season because he enrolled in classes at TCU for the spring semester and then dropped them after the school’s drop deadline, something Spivey says he was instructed to do by an academic advisor. Bulldogs FB HC Zach Arnett: “We're talking about a guy who's graduated with his four-year degree. Look at the number of grad transfers playing across the country this year. Spivey graduated from TCU, obviously they played in the national title game, and so that goes into the second week of January. I think it's a joke. I think it's a joke that he's not being allowed to play his final year of eligibility. Because they're saying of some technicality, which TCU admitted that they had a flaw in their systems, and that they support him in his eligibility this year.” (link)

The Athletic’s David Ubben wonders why NIL deals are cloaked in such mystery and points out that many contracts with collectives come with NDAs. In fact, Tennessee football student-athlete Daevin Hobbs and his father, Dennis, tell Ubben they don’t even know how Dobbs’ deal compares with those of his teammates. SANIL CEO Jason Belzer explains that “once we bring in a school, we can say here’s your average payroll based on position, years, and we’re usually pretty accurate to what a kid is making. That doesn’t mean a school won’t come in and pay double because they really want that player.” Belzer goes on to say: “I would say I have the single best idea of market value in the world as it relates to NIL. … A kid comes in and thinks he’s worth X, and it’s a rude awakening when he realizes it’s not the reality. They’re just not real.” More. (link)

Kering Chairman/CEO Francois-Henri Pinault has completed his acquisition of a majority stake in CAA, replacing TPG as the primary stakeholder. Sportico’s Matt Donnelly reports the “agency’s ruling triumvirate of Bryan Lourd, Kevin Huvane and Richard Lovett have all committed to remaining in leadership.” Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw adds that the deal values CAA at $7B. Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter’s Alex Weprin reports that Lourd will take over as CEO. (link, link)

The University System of Georgia Board of Regents has approved West Georgia’s reclassification from DII to DI and the Atlantic Sun and UAC for football, effective July 1, 2024. President Brendan Kelly: “At UWG, we dedicate ourselves to the curation of a first-choice university. We have strategically and thoughtfully prepared for this opportunity to take our institution to the next level and become an even more attractive option for well-rounded students interested in our exceptional academic programs at a university that nurtures their ability to become their best future selves.” (link)

Oregon State and Washington State have initiated legal action against the Pac-12 to “confirm the governance structure of the conference, gain access to business information, and protect the conference’s assets. This is a critical step that allows the two universities to continue to explore all options for preserving the conference going forward, according to Oregon State President Jayathi Murthy and Washington State President Kirk Schulz.” OSU and WSU in a release contend that, per league bylaws, they “now constitute the entire membership of the Pac-12 Board of Directors.” Also: “The filing seeks to prevent the Pac-12 from permitting the departing members of the Pac-12 Board of Directors from meeting and attempting to take any action regarding the status or governance of the conference in ways that preclude OSU and WSU from potentially rebuilding the conference. … The Pac-12 commissioner recently asked current and former members of the Pac-12 board to meet on Sept. 13 to vote on a ‘go forward governance approach’ for the conference, in violation of the Pac-12 constitution and by-laws, according to the filing. The temporary restraining order seeks to prevent this meeting or similar action, which would cause immediate and irreparable harm to OSU, WSU, and the conference.” More from OSU and WSU, including the full complaints. (link)
|
The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner reports the “filing comes after a tense two weeks that began when Schulz, chair of the Pac-12 board, declined George Kliavkoff’s request to call a board meeting to discuss ‘complex issues facing the Conference.’ … That led Kliavkoff to schedule the meeting himself (for Sept. 13). He invited all 12 board members, including those from USC and UCLA. The Los Angeles schools had been excluded from prior Pac-12 board meetings following their June 2022 decision to join the Big Ten.” Wilner goes on to note that “WSU and OSU believe the public statements by executives from the outgoing schools – and the ‘welcome’ announcements blasted on social media by their new leagues – constitute a legal delivery of notice, thereby rendering their presidents ineligible for the Pac-12 board.” Wilner also points out Colorado Chancellor Philip DiStefano was excluded from Pac-12 board meetings after the Buffs announced their departure for the Big 12. (link); More from Wilner on the details which led to today’s filing, including this, as outlined in the complaint: “One representative of a departing Pac-12 member threatened that the departing members of the Conference were poised to take immediate action to seize control of the Pac-12. The representative wrote: ‘It seems obvious that any 9 Members can declare the fate of the Conference at any time.’” Full timeline. (link)

The State University System of Florida Board of Governors has approved USF’s plan to borrow up to $200M to construct its approximately $340M on-campus football stadium. Given the increase in interest rates, USF Board of Trustees Chair Will Weatherford firmly states “we will not enter into any financial commitment that puts this university’s financial integrity at risk,” adding: “It’s no coincidence that every one of these universities also made a significant investment in their athletic facilities, either through a new stadium or making tremendous renovations to their existing one. The consensus is that the conference realignment will continue. It’s critically important for us to make investments now so that the university can position itself for the future.” (link)

Florida State AD Michael Alford updates the board on the $210M renovation to Doak Campbell Stadium which, pending approval in November, is expected to begin in January. The renovations will upgrade the south endzone club seats, expand seating on the west side of the stadium, update the concourse and concession stands and more. Given those renovations to the west side of the stadium, Seminoles fans will see temporary seating for the 2024 season. Senior VP for Finance and Administration Kyle Clark plans “to make a five-year pledge on the maximum $255M debt,” pending board approval. Renderings included. (link); Alford added that the Noles have $400M in facility projects in the planning or construction phase. On the financial gap with other conferences: "The gap ... is not going to allow us to compete in the other 19 sports. That is my biggest concern, because the financial difference that other institutions are going to have, they're going to be able to elevate some of the sports that they haven't competed with us in.” (link)

The DI Council Coordination Committee sent a memo to conference commissioners, compliance officers and others this week reaffirming the current transfer waiver process and the way the guidelines for two-time transfers are being applied, The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach reports. The memo also notes that a “similar update and additional data will be provided to the council at its October meeting.” (link)

Now live on Connect: Montana State AD Leon Costello sits down with Fox Sports/Connect’s Bryan Fischer at the 2023 NACDA Convention to discuss topics ranging from revenue generation to building a culture in the transfer portal era. Costello also offers a rundown of where the Bobcats stand facilities-wise, telling Fischer: “We had a big project in ‘21 that we were able to open up the Bobcat Athletic Complex. What we're seeing right now is by moving football and some of those support services over to that building, we've opened up some space in the field house that we're able to renovate for all of the other student-athletes. We renovated our training room and our weight room in the field house. We're creating new locker rooms for men's basketball, women's basketball as well. The old football locker room and the old football coach's offices are now becoming a new academic center. … So we're seeing a direct impact on all of our student-athletes by building one building, and now it's time to expand. We do have our sights set on an indoor practice facility, for us obviously, with our climate playing football and early January we get some crazy weather.” More from Costello, including his thoughts on the state’s growing population and the Big Sky TV deal. Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde wonders aloud why student-athletes are so far the only ones being investigated for sports gambling, citing one source familiar with campus wagering who says: “There are thousands of college athletes breaking NCAA gambling rules and thousands of regular students breaking the law. They’re just not under investigation.” Forde points out that we are currently at the crest of a confluence of two trends: the proliferation of legalized gambling and the NCAA’s de-emphasis of gambling oversight. “Earlier this century, the NCAA had a well-staffed enforcement arm called the Agent, Gambling and Amateurism Activities division. … Over time, many of those AGAA staffers left the NCAA for campus compliance jobs, law firms that specialized in NCAA compliance, or jobs outside the industry. The association’s expertise in the gambling sector largely became the province of enforcement rep Mark Strothkamp. He died unexpectedly last December, and there was almost no one minding the store heading into a spring of bombshell gambling headlines.” Many universities and conferences “seem to have been blindsided as well,” Forde continues, “which suggests a lack of awareness and foresight. With gambling companies buying ads in stadiums, on college sports broadcasts and targeting young consumers, the stimulus was omnipresent. The media has played into it, creating gambling content that once was scrupulously avoided. … Meanwhile, the rest of the nation’s college athletes, coaches and administrators can only exhale after their schools were not “the chosen ones.” If nothing else, the Cyclones and Hawkeyes might have scared everyone else straight.” (link)

The facility will also be outfitted with new dugouts, press/media areas and concessions, along with expanding the seating capacity to 1,500. (link)

Wichita State will transition its club Women’s Bowling to become its 16th varsity sport in 2024-25. Five decades of tremendous alumni and coaches' contributions, this program is equipped to launch as an immediate competitor in NCAA post-season competition. Over the next year we will work diligently on all elements of the transition to an NCAA program, most importantly aligning championship-level resources to meet championship expectations.” (link)
