Updates from East Lansing…
+ Michigan State has suspended Football HC Mel Tucker without pay as it continues its investigation into sexual harassment allegations against him. Asked about the timing of the suspension, Spartans AD Alan Haller remarked that “interim measures were in place, and those interim measures have been updated. … The university’s formal conclusion of the investigation will occur once the hearing and final decision processes are complete.” (link)
+ Spartans AC Harlon Barnett has been named Interim HC, and former Football HC Mark Dantonio will reportedly serve as AHC. (link)
+ ESPN’s Dan Murphy: “Important distinction on the Mel Tucker suspension after tonight's press conference: MSU's leadership (including Alan Haller) knew there was a complaint made against Mel Tucker in late December. They did not know any details until last night, a school spokeswoman confirmed. Title IX and sexual misconduct experts say this is the proper, trauma-informed protocol for how to handle this kind of complaint. Tucker's bosses should not have known the details during an open case. … The university spokeswoman said the official reason for Tucker's suspension is ‘unprofessional behavior and not living up to the core values of the department and university.’ They didn't learn Tucker had admitted to any sexual encounters until this weekend.” (link)
+ The Lansing State Journal’s Graham Couch posits Tucker has likely coached his last game in East Lansing “because even if you take him at his word over Tracy’s – which seems like an odd choice given the reported inconsistencies in his story, notably denying the incident took place on a work trip when receipts show otherwise – what Tucker admits is probably enough to nullify the remainder of his 10-year, $95M contract, regardless of the decision at the October hearing.” Couch also writes: “The details of this Title IX investigation call into question Tucker’s character and common sense. That’s a problem. He is the face of MSU’s largest athletic program and a leader of 100 young men on campus. A campus that’s tired of this stuff.” (link)

The Tez Walker Situation…
+ The North Carolina Board of Trustees has called an emergency meeting for today to “receive a legal update regarding an athletics matter,” and On3’s Andy Staples notes: “If this is Tez Walker-related – and it sounds like it is – I wonder if some other schools would join in. Tez’s specific situation is a little different because of NC Central canceling its 2020 season, but several players were denied despite enrolling before the guidance changed.” (link)
+ North Carolina and Tar Heels WR Tez Walker Walker could seek a restraining order that bars the NCAA from denying Walker’s eligibility, according to Sportico’s Michael McCann, who explains Walker “could maintain he would suffer irreparable injury in that he will be held out of games that can’t be replayed and his development as a football player will consequently suffer. He could also argue that playing football helps his mental health, and being denied eligibility will exacerbate his health challenges. Walker might assert a claim under the Americans with Disabilities Act, contending the NCAA’s application of the transfer rule denies him a reasonable accommodation.” However, McCann notes that unless the enforcement of NCAA rules is “deemed arbitrary or capricious—a very deferential standard—it would likely withstand legal scrutiny” since the NCAA is a membership organization. “That said, judges, be they conservative or liberal, have become increasingly critical of the NCAA’s leadership and its system of amateurism. That dynamic may make it more appealing for Walker and UNC to test the ruling in court.” (link)
+ Former North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Robert Orr tells Joe Ovies and Joe Giglio that schools historically haven’t defied the NCAA because the risks have outweighed the rewards, but he does note the decision on whether to play North Carolina WR Tez Walker is UNC’s to make. “If they want to play him, by golly put him in a uniform and put him on the field and tell the NCAA they think they're wrong in how they're interpreting and applying this particular transfer rule. And if they want to litigate it, fine. UNC will litigate and, as we know, UNC has not been hesitant to hire copious numbers of high-price lawyers to fight the NCAA and, frankly, been pretty successful.” (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey spoke with media members at Saturday’s Texas-Alabama game and said: “Tonight is about our future. This is pretty cool. And we had an opportunity, we had a few universities interested in a new affiliation. The very first conference (call) with student-athletes after the announcement, they were asking, ‘Can we get this done sooner? We want to play them.’ When we met with our presidents a week after the Big Ten addition of USC and UCLA, very clearly one of the presidents said, ‘That’s not who we are.’ Our fans understand our reality, the young people who come here understand our reality.” Sankey went on to say that “I’ve been with two coaches in some of these new conferences who talk about just the logistics of what they’re up against. We’ll have a team (Auburn) play in Berkeley tonight and probably get home Sunday morning, when the sun’s up. So yeah, our region, our fans, our identity matters greatly. But also, I think we’re in a really, really healthy situation. And what’s happened the last two years, really when you dig into it is not a result of – people may have been worried about us, and then acted to add. What we decided was that was the right opportunity and it keeps the same type of connection to our region and our fans.” (link)

Clemson Deputy AD Kevin White and Notre Dame Deputy AD Yulander Wells Jr. sit down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to dive into how they add value to their ADs, their institutions and their staff from the Deputy AD position. White and Wells discuss the dual roles of a Deputy AD – the daily “keep the trains running” perspective and the long-term strategic thinking aspect – noting that effective Deputy ADs have the ability to serve as a conduit for an AD’s vision. They also offer insight into how they evaluate talent, including hiring and firing staff, and talk about balancing resources for football with supporting other sports. On that topic of talent evaluation, White says it starts with building relationships. “You’ve got to go beyond the reference lists. I don’t think anybody’s going to put somebody on a reference list that’s going to give them a bad reference.” White also emphasizes that “you have to be dedicated to the process in order to make sure it's an open search. You cast a wide net…and you use your network appropriately where you can actually get the best intel on who you’re getting as a person.” Lots more from White and Wells. (link)

Georgia Tech AD J Batt tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Chad Bishop the Yellow Jackets have more facilities projects on the horizon in addition to the 96K-sq-ft Student Athlete Performance Center, on which the school expects to break ground later this year. “We’ve begun the planning process for some comprehensive renovations. This facility that we’re sitting in, Bobby Dodd, will certainly be at the top of the list. We want to provide an enhanced game-day experience, enhanced premium-seating options, and do so in a thoughtful manner. We’ll want to do it as part of a comprehensive approach to our facilities across the board. I’ll tell you, that planning process has begun. Long way to go to get to all those different needs, but we’ve begun to approach that. It’s important.” (link)

Northern Iowa’s West Gym, home of the Panthers’ wrestling team, may be on its last legs. As UNI Director of University Relations Pete Moris puts it: “The engineers and consultants have told us that the building will tell you when it’s time, and the building is telling us that it’s not doing so well.” Morris says it would likely cost over $20M to make the needed renovations, and “we’ve obviously known for some time that there are structural deficiencies with the West Gym. It’s a building that’s nearly 100 years old and wasn’t constructed to today’s standards. It was really our hope that these temporary measures would be able to get us through the wrestling season in order for the wrestling team to be able to continue to train in the facility for the remainder of this year. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that we can get the building certified for occupancy, even if we do spend more time and resources to further reinforce that east wall. … I anticipate that in the near future we will have all the key decision-makers together and see if we can come to some conclusions, because obviously this was not anticipated that we would have to vacate the West Gym at this point.” (link)

Icon Source Advisor Drew Butler joins Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to reflect on NIL’s second year and look ahead to Year 3. Butler digs into issues of compliance, "bad actors," collectives, student-athletes as employees and more. Butler describes Year 2 of NIL as “confusing,” explaining: “There’s been no uniformity. People are clamoring for it. You’re continuing to see the NCAA beg the federal government for help to create some sort of rules or guidelines.” Butler also notes that the various state laws have contributed to the confusion, as “there's more hoops and ladders that athletic associations and certain universities are having to abide by, and the NCAA continues to sit on their hands.” Looking forward, one thing Butler expects to see over the next 12 months is an uptick in student-athletes speaking out to “help create some sort of rules and regulations, as everybody’s clamoring for.” Check out the full Q&A on Connect. High-profile sexual violence prevention educator Brenda Tracy has accused Michigan State Football HC Mel Tucker of misconduct. MSU launched an investigation into Tracy’s claims back in December with hearings set for early next month. Tucker, in a March letter to investigators in connection to what he says was consensual phone sex between the two as their relationship developed: “Ms. Tracy’s distortion of our mutually consensual and intimate relationship into allegations of sexual exploitation has really affected me. I am not proud of my judgment and I am having difficulty forgiving myself for getting into this situation, but I did not engage in misconduct by any definition.” USA Today’s Kenny Jacoby with all the details. Following comments a few weeks back by Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark about Texas’ & Oklahoma’s exits, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey followed-up: “I spoke to both campuses right after. I’m sure Brett expects the PAC-12 to treat the four departing members respect as they leave. I know Texas & Oklahoma and myself expect that kind of respect to be reflected toward Oklahoma & Texas." Former Baylor Football HC Art Briles is the father-in-law of Oklahoma Offensive Coordinator Jeff Lebby and as such was at OU’s game against SMU last night and spent time with his family on the field after the game. Sooners AD Castiglione: I “was just as disappointed as many of our fans when I learned of the postgame situation tonight. It shouldn’t have happened and it was my expectation it never would, based on boundaries we previously set. I’ve addressed it with the appropriate staff.” OU HC Venables said the situation is “being dealt with.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner writes on how the Pac-12 & Pac-12 Networks plan to broadcast nearly 1,000 contests this school year amid an unknown future for its two staffs. Wilner: “Internally, conference executives are crafting two plans to navigate the next nine months, according to a source with knowledge of the situation: 1) A scope-of-services plan to determine which services should be continued as normal, downsized or eliminated. 2) An employee retention-and-severance plan to maintain the staffing necessary to support the athletes and produce the events that generate the media cash. (There are roughly 50 employees on the conference side and another 150 who work for the Pac-12 Networks.)” As part of their legal filing late last week, Oregon State & Washington State believe they & they alone now make up the conference board that can decide how to proceed with league business, including the broadcasting challenges. Wilner in closing: “Somehow, some way, the conference must find a compromise that allows for approval of the scope-of-services and employee retention-and-severance plans. The legal action might bring the board’s business to a halt, but it won’t stop essential staffers from looking for work.” (link)

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Benjamin Hochman profiles Missouri AD Desiree Reed-Francois. Hochman: “As the current Mizzou athletic department continues to make its march toward Southeastern Conference relevancy, one must know Mizzou has a brilliant and unwavering leader who is changing the game (and the game experience).” Reed-Francois, who took over in Columbia in August 2021, has helped Mizzou reach its first revenue surplus in more than five years and has taken a hands-on approach to revamping the gameday experience. Reed-Francois: “We’re not going to accept mediocrity …We work really hard because we owe that to our state and we owe that to our student-athletes. That’s the given in this equation. And we’re determined. Make no mistake about it, we belong in the Southeastern Conference. And we’re going to stay true to our core values, and we hire people with high-character, low-ego, high-outcome and energy. But yeah, make no mistake about it — we’re not here for a participation trophy. (link)

St. John’s Men’s Basketball HC Rick Pitino calls ongoing conference realignment “totally absurd” and says to ZagsBlog’s Adam Zagoria: “They don’t even care about women’s sports, minor sports. They’re just saying you’ve gotta travel, so everybody’s going to be sitting in an airport with their flight delayed while football and basketball are taking their private planes.” Pitino also praises the Big East for its longevity, noting that “in 40-plus years, teams have changed but the Big East model that Dave Gavitt built has remained intact. Playoffs at Madison Square Garden, it’s been traditionally a Catholic-school league except for Butler and UConn and it has not looked to expand.” (link)

+ Collegiate Consulting assisted West Georgia with a 266-page feasibility study as the Wolves considered a DI jump, which went official over the past week. Notably: “Collegiate Consulting projected UWG current athletic budget of $10.5 million would witness a 59% increase by FY2029. Student-athlete financial aid is projected to increase by 75 scholarships. Over the next six years, sports operating budgets will increase by nearly $1 million and is projected to add 8 – 10 positions, both administrative and coaches.” (link)
+ Oak View Group has formed Crown Properties Collection (CPC) with Madison Square Garden Entertainment and Sphere Entertainment. SBJ’s Bret McCormick reports the “new company will manage Sphere Entertainment and the MSG family of companies’ global partnership portfolio, including MSG Entertainment’s venues, productions, and live entertainment properties.” Former PGA Tour SVP for Business Development Jay Voelker will lead the new entity. OVG Founder/CEO Tim Leiweke: “This is a unique combination of assets, that are worldwide, that are all about facilities and live entertainment, and it just made sense to have that kind of reach, that kind of strength and that kind of global footprint. The breadth of our knowledge, our relationships, and our reputation, the international reach that we have is going to change dramatically the people that we talk to about the Garden, the Knicks, the Rangers, or The Sphere."
