The DI Board of Directors has released a statement regarding transfer waivers that reads, in part: "The NCAA is aware of violent – and possibly criminal – threats recently directed at committee members involved in regulatory decisions. The national office is coordinating with law enforcement and will continue to do whatever possible to support the volunteers who serve on these committees. … The DI Board is troubled by the public remarks made last week by some of the University of North Carolina leadership. Those comments directly contradict what we and our fellow Division I members and coaches called for vociferously – including UNC's own football coach. We are a membership organization, and rather than pursue a public relations campaign that can contribute to a charged environment for our peers who volunteer on committees, we encourage members to use established and agreed upon procedures to voice concerns and propose and adopt rule or policy changes if they are dissatisfied." Full statement. (link)

Endeavor met with the NCAA Board of Directors last month to discuss the ongoing media rights deal, per CBS’ Dennis Dodd, who adds: “Speculation is that the current bundle will be split up after it expires in 2024. Industry sources: women's BKB tournament could be worth the amount the entire bundle is getting now – $30M.” (link)

The University of California Board of Regents is expected to discuss UCLA’s potential subsidy to Cal in light of the Golden Bears’ upcoming move to the ACC. The board last year voted to retain the authority to force UCLA to subsidize Berkeley due to the expected loss in revenue caused by the Bruins’ departure, and The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner notes, per the board, the maximum “Cal-imony” Berkeley would be due is $10M; however, with the Golden Bears accepting a drastically reduced media rights share in the ACC, it’s possible UCLA will have to pay it. “It’s possible the regents will mull the issue for several months, then decline to slap the Bruins with the Berkeley tax. Possible, but unlikely. Both campuses expect the subsidy to be imposed – one’s relieved; the other’s frustrated – but neither of them knows the amount. Clarity might begin to emerge next week.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown is among those who have heard rumors about Charleston potentially moving to the Atlantic 10; however, Brown notes he hasn’t “been able to get anybody with direct knowledge to say anything. FWIW, COC AD Matt Roberts told me that ‘nothing to comment on regarding those Twitter rumors.’ No response from A-10 office either. I will say, I'd be a little surprised if an announcement was made *now*, given how the CAA has previously played hardball re: tournament eligibility with any departing members. But you never know!” (link)

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione tells On3’s Pete Nakos the “idea that realignment presented itself in the last few years shouldn’t be a shock to people who were truly paying attention. That being said, the way some of it has evolved has been stunning. There’s just a real difficulty now trying to navigate this period of time. I don’t think anybody would dispute that this is the most tumultuous time that college athletics has ever experienced that we’re not done with.” Castiglione also tells Nakos he believes the NCAA can still devise a workable NIL solution: “The best thing we can continue to do is have the best thought leaders at the table to understand the changes that have taken place to try to chart the best course forward and to create the model that is going to best represent the rest of the 21st century. That has all sorts of complexities attached to it. But we’ve got to continue to be bold in creating a strategy going forward.” Regarding College Football Playoff expansion, Castiglione is still on board, although he’s not ready to publicly support a format until the dust settles with the Pac-12. SMU AD Rick Hart talks with the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel about the move to the ACC and scoffs at the notion the Mustangs bought their way in. “I don’t want to sound defensive, but to simplify it to that I think is missing the big picture. And by that I mean, we all knew, and this isn’t unique to the ACC, but in particular, the ACC’s (financial) goals have been well-documented, and any expansion that occurred was going to need to be accretive. That’s a fact. And by the way, it’s typical when you transition into a new conference that there’s a leveling up period, if you will, in terms of the revenues. … But look, we knew this might require a more aggressive approach and we needed to see what that meant in terms of aligning with the ACC’s goals financially. And when you look at it, we’ve only forgone, and look, I get that it’s the biggest bucket, but we’ve forgone the media revenue bucket for a period of time. We have access immediately to all the other revenue streams.” Hart believes donors will continue to step up as the Mustangs work to increase the budget. “Let’s look back five or 10 years from now and see how we compare then. ... We also knew the ACC would want assurance that we were not going to be dead weight, that we were going to come in, add value and be competitive.” (link)

With a deadline for renovations to Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium approaching, Memphis AD Laird Veatch says: “Sort of a moment of truth coming up, and we need to demonstrate that and send the message that we're here collectively as a city and state and university, all of us, to support something that is this big-time and this effective and this transformational for our football program. We've got to move forward. It's time to do it. And we have the ability and the will to make it happen." Veatch adds it's his understanding that the city has a "drop-dead date" in October in order to begin the project on time, although it wasn't clear what would happen after that date. He also bristles at the idea that renovations could/should be pushed back as the city negotiates with the Memphis Grizzlies about FedEx Forum renovations. “The state allocated those dollars with the intention that it was going to go to a couple projects and one of those happens to be really directly impactful to one of the state-owned organizations in the University of Memphis and our football program. And we're just at a point where we need to push this thing forward. One of the things I've kind of struggled with is that there's been this narrative that it might have to be sort of an 'either or' scenario, and candidly it needs to be both.” (link)

Vanderbilt has received a lead gift from an anonymous baseball alumnus and his wife which will match all qualifying gifts and pledges by other baseball alumni up to $10M. The funds support enhancements to Hawkins Field. Commodores HC Tim Corbin: “Every Vanderbilt baseball alumnus is always welcome at Hawkins Field because whether or not they played there, and whether or not they played for me, they shaped us. I’m tremendously grateful for this generous gift and to every former player who gives back to our program in any form.” (link)

The Syracuse-focused Orange United has launched as the preferred collective of SU athletics. Orange AD John Wildhack: “It’s 2023.
