Brenda Tracy says – and USA Today’s Kenny Jacoby confirms – that her name was leaked by a third party to local media, which led to the USA Today story. Tracy’s attorney, Karen Truszkowski, says in a statement: “Brenda Tracy had no intention of publicly disclosing her identity. She was and continues to be committed to complying with and concluding the MSU internal investigative process. She respected the process and chose not to go to the media to preserve the integrity of the process. After the investigation process was completed, we would have determined, what, if any further steps to take. Instead, her identity was disclosed without her knowledge or consent, warranting express actions to protect her. Her choice to allow this process to proceed privately was taken away. Let me be patently clear: Brenda Tracy had no intention of disclosing anything publicly until someone else violated her right to confidentiality.” Tracy herself says she “voluntarily shared documents with USA Today so that my story could be written and published after the conclusion of the school process, but also just in case my name leaked — which it did. I did not want to publish my story in the early morning hours last weekend, but I had no choice because someone outed me to the media. I am angry that my right to confidentiality has been violated and I hope that those responsible are held accountable.” (link, link); Full statement from Tracy. (link)

Several Knight Commission members expand on their recent Financial Projections through 2032 for DI FBS Programs report. CEO Amy Privette Perko tells the News-Gazette’s Jeff D’Alessio: “The first step to urgently address the cost spiral of accelerating football coaching compensation must begin with university presidents in each conference directing their athletics directors, conference commissioners and legal counsel to develop a plan for their conference to implement before billions in new revenues are committed.” Perko suggests implementing salary caps and other spending thresholds that come with financial penalties such as withheld distributions and luxury taxes if exceeded and adds: “The government could change the application of not-for-profit taxation rules to address excessive compensation for college athletics staff. The favorable nonprofit tax status college athletics programs enjoy is related to their ‘educational nexus.’” Co-Chair Arne Duncan adds: “It’s time – it’s been time – for the Power 5 football conferences to go their own way. Let the other sports at those schools, and all sports at every other school, forge a path forward not based on a professional model where increasing revenue drives every decision, but based on what’s best for the health, safety and well-being of collegiate student-athletes.” More. With two consecutive SEC All-Sports trophies now on the shelf, Tennessee AD Danny White tells the Orlando Sentinel’s Mike Bianchi the Vols’ commitment to running a broad-based athletic program was part of the reason he wanted to come to Knoxville. “This place has always valued winning across the board. Just look at Pat Summitt’s history in women’s basketball. We talk about excellence in everything we do. We have serious-minded men and women who want to make the most of themselves and compete at the highest level. If the Power-T brand is going to be on that jersey, we want to be really good. We want to win championships.” (link)

Nearly two-thirds of FBS HCs “with an opinion on the new clock rules do not like that the clock continues to run after first downs,” according to an Action Network survey. Action Network’s Brett McMurphy: “Of the 133 FBS coaches, 120 participated in Action Network’s survey with 70 of the 120 saying it’s too early to tell if they like the change or not. Of the remaining 50 coaches, 64% did not like the rule, compared to 36% in favor of it.” Ole Miss HC Lane Kiffin went on record last week saying he disliked the changes, and now UCF HC Gus Malzahn, North Carolina HC Mack Brown and Louisiana-Monroe HC Terry Bowden have joined him, with Bowden saying: “We’ve replaced football with more time for commercials.” Brown adds: “It’s hard to sell safety to [remove] seven to 10 plays when you’re adding a 12-team playoff. Come on, man.” (link)

+ Utah Tech has launched an investigation into Women’s Basketball HC JD Gustin after current and former student-athletes accused him of bullying, physical intimidation and retaliation. The Salt Lake Tribune’s Eric Walden reports that 11 women allege Gustin used obscenities while insulting them, humiliated them in front of teammates, gave some the silent treatment and threatened to revoke scholarships. Walden also reports a group of parents became concerned that the university was ignoring complaints about Gustin and hired a private investigator who compiled a 55-page report in which more than 20 players and assistant coaches, past and present, anonymously made complaints about Gustin’s behavior. The report was submitted to the university, and UTU Director of Equity Compliance/Title IX Coordinator Hazel Sainsbury indicated in a July email that the evidence presented at the time “would not rise to the level of a policy violation.” More. The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman profiles the role Constance Schwartz-Morini has played in Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders’ business and coaching career. The two met, as is so often the case, through Snoop Dogg, whose marketing and PR Schwartz-Morini handled at the time. Initially, Coach Prime told Schwartz-Morini he wanted to help Florida State recruit, to which she responded: “Why would you help them recruit? Why wouldn’t you just go for it and be a head coach?” She adds: “And he looked at me with this pause, like he does when he’s processing, and he said, ‘You’re right. Let’s go for it.’” Despite roughly 90% of FBS coaches being represented by one of four firms, Sanders says that was never a deterrent for Schwartz-Morini. “She pretty much established the whole team that was behind the scenes. She got all the intricate details of helping me prepare for my interviews, which was phenomenal with all the intel that you need to prepare, and just connecting all the dots of the who’s who behind the curtains that I had no idea about.” Schwartz-Morini, who also co-founded SMAC Entertainment, which has Michael Strahan, Erin Andrews and Wiz Khalifa among its clients, tells Feldman that Coach Prime’s coaching career path resembles her own: “We leave it to all the naysayers on why we can’t. … The more people who tell us why we can’t do something just puts the battery in our back of why we can do it.” (link)

Iowa football student-athlete Noah Shannon’s appeal to the NCAA for his year-long suspension has been denied. Hawkeyes HC Kirk Ferentz: “I'm not quite sure what went into the decision, but what I can tell you is that Noah is just a tremendous young man, has been [a tremendous young man throughout his time in Iowa City]. Came back for his sixth year, just a highly respected leader in our locker room and certainly with our coaching staff. So I feel very, very unfortunate [for him] and our goal is to keep him with the program, keep him close, have him remain as part of the team. Obviously he can't play, but he's run a heck of a race and we're just really disappointed with this whole thing.” Shannon previously admitted to wagering on an event involving a Hawkeyes team in another sport, but has not been charged in the ongoing investigation in the state. WWE President Nick Khan tells The Ringer’s Bill Simmons not to be surprised if NBCUniversal enters the NBA media rights race. “I would look for partnership on that. Does NBC go to what is now Warner Bros. Discovery and say let’s split a package where we, NBCU, get Tuesday nights, you guys keep Thursday nights, and oh by the way, Warner Bros. produces all the games for us? That could happen. I’m hearing some rumblings of that. … The numbers that the NBA wants and the numbers that they deserve, it’s going to be tough for just two separate entities to go forward and pay that. But if you get a combination of four or six entities, if they’re working together, that’s a way to keep it organized and get maximum financial value.” (link)

Manchester United announces that Qualcomm's Snapdragon will be the club's main shirt sponsor starting with the 2024-25 season, and Sportico’s Kurt Badenhausen reports the deal will be the largest in world soccer, surpassing Real Madrid’s $75M annual deal with Emirates as well as United’s previous $80M per annum pact with General Motors. In 2021, Man U signed a five-year contract with German business software company TeamViewer that was worth $59M per year. (link)

The DI Board of Directors has released a statement regarding transfer waivers that reads, in part: "The NCAA is aware of violent – and possibly criminal – threats recently directed at committee members involved in regulatory decisions. The national office is coordinating with law enforcement and will continue to do whatever possible to support the volunteers who serve on these committees. … The DI Board is troubled by the public remarks made last week by some of the University of North Carolina leadership. Those comments directly contradict what we and our fellow Division I members and coaches called for vociferously – including UNC's own football coach. We are a membership organization, and rather than pursue a public relations campaign that can contribute to a charged environment for our peers who volunteer on committees, we encourage members to use established and agreed upon procedures to voice concerns and propose and adopt rule or policy changes if they are dissatisfied." Endeavor met with the NCAA Board of Directors last month to discuss the ongoing media rights deal, per CBS’ Dennis Dodd, who adds: “Speculation is that the current bundle will be split up after it expires in 2024. The University of California Board of Regents is expected to discuss UCLA’s potential subsidy to Cal in light of the Golden Bears’ upcoming move to the ACC. The board last year voted to retain the authority to force UCLA to subsidize Berkeley due to the expected loss in revenue caused by the Bruins’ departure, and The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner notes, per the board, the maximum “Cal-imony” Berkeley would be due is $10M; however, with the Golden Bears accepting a drastically reduced media rights share in the ACC, it’s possible UCLA will have to pay it. “It’s possible the regents will mull the issue for several months, then decline to slap the Bruins with the Berkeley tax. Possible, but unlikely. Both campuses expect the subsidy to be imposed – one’s relieved; the other’s frustrated – but neither of them knows the amount. Clarity might begin to emerge next week.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown is among those who have heard rumors about Charleston potentially moving to the Atlantic 10; however, Brown notes he hasn’t “been able to get anybody with direct knowledge to say anything. FWIW, COC AD Matt Roberts told me that ‘nothing to comment on regarding those Twitter rumors.’ No response from A-10 office either. I will say, I'd be a little surprised if an announcement was made *now*, given how the CAA has previously played hardball re: tournament eligibility with any departing members. But you never know!” (link)

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione tells On3’s Pete Nakos the “idea that realignment presented itself in the last few years shouldn’t be a shock to people who were truly paying attention. That being said, the way some of it has evolved has been stunning. There’s just a real difficulty now trying to navigate this period of time. I don’t think anybody would dispute that this is the most tumultuous time that college athletics has ever experienced that we’re not done with.” Castiglione also tells Nakos he believes the NCAA can still devise a workable NIL solution: “The best thing we can continue to do is have the best thought leaders at the table to understand the changes that have taken place to try to chart the best course forward and to create the model that is going to best represent the rest of the 21st century. That has all sorts of complexities attached to it. But we’ve got to continue to be bold in creating a strategy going forward.” Regarding College Football Playoff expansion, Castiglione is still on board, although he’s not ready to publicly support a format until the dust settles with the Pac-12. SMU AD Rick Hart talks with the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel about the move to the ACC and scoffs at the notion the Mustangs bought their way in. “I don’t want to sound defensive, but to simplify it to that I think is missing the big picture. And by that I mean, we all knew, and this isn’t unique to the ACC, but in particular, the ACC’s (financial) goals have been well-documented, and any expansion that occurred was going to need to be accretive. That’s a fact. And by the way, it’s typical when you transition into a new conference that there’s a leveling up period, if you will, in terms of the revenues. … But look, we knew this might require a more aggressive approach and we needed to see what that meant in terms of aligning with the ACC’s goals financially. And when you look at it, we’ve only forgone, and look, I get that it’s the biggest bucket, but we’ve forgone the media revenue bucket for a period of time. We have access immediately to all the other revenue streams.” Hart believes donors will continue to step up as the Mustangs work to increase the budget. “Let’s look back five or 10 years from now and see how we compare then. ... We also knew the ACC would want assurance that we were not going to be dead weight, that we were going to come in, add value and be competitive.” (link)

With a deadline for renovations to Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium approaching, Memphis AD Laird Veatch says: “Sort of a moment of truth coming up, and we need to demonstrate that and send the message that we're here collectively as a city and state and university, all of us, to support something that is this big-time and this effective and this transformational for our football program. We've got to move forward. It's time to do it. And we have the ability and the will to make it happen." Veatch adds it's his understanding that the city has a "drop-dead date" in October in order to begin the project on time, although it wasn't clear what would happen after that date. He also bristles at the idea that renovations could/should be pushed back as the city negotiates with the Memphis Grizzlies about FedEx Forum renovations. “The state allocated those dollars with the intention that it was going to go to a couple projects and one of those happens to be really directly impactful to one of the state-owned organizations in the University of Memphis and our football program. And we're just at a point where we need to push this thing forward. One of the things I've kind of struggled with is that there's been this narrative that it might have to be sort of an 'either or' scenario, and candidly it needs to be both.” (link)

The funds support enhancements to Hawkins Field. Commodores HC Tim Corbin: “Every Vanderbilt baseball alumnus is always welcome at Hawkins Field because whether or not they played there, and whether or not they played for me, they shaped us.
