Shepherd AD Chauncey Winbush will depart to become the Deputy AD/Chief of Staff at Miami (OH) (DI). The CIAA inks a 10-year media rights partnership with HBCU GO that grants the streaming platform cable, linear, streaming, broadcast, VOD, and pay-per-view rights coverage of all CIAA team sports through June 2032. Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams Parker: “This media deal with AMG is a game changer for the CIAA and unprecedented in Division II. We will expand the CIAA Sports Network platform through HBCU GO to give greater exposure for our 13 member schools and their student athletes. I am excited about the jobs being created, the talent identified, and the stories to be told through a platform developed to give HBCUs well deserved and long overdue exposure. [...] We appreciate Byron Allen and his team seeing the value and importance of HBCU sports contributions to the world and how we can continue to work together to provide exposure and economic stability in our communities through sports.” (link)

LEARFIELD has completed a $1.1B recapitalization that SBJ’s Michael Smith and Bret McCormick report will “greatly reduce the company’s debt while also infusing $150M in new equity investment” into the company. Specifically, the restructuring will reduce LEARFIELD’s debt from $1.1B to $500M after an 11-month debt-restructuring process. The new arrangement comes with a new set of majority stakeholders in Clearlake Capital Group, Charlesbank Capital Partners and funds managed by Fortress Investment Group, and the company’s new board of directors will be assigned so that each firm will have representation. Other directors from outside of the majority owners could be on the board as well, per Smith and McCormick, who also note that LEARFIELD “didn't share the company’s new debt ratio, but a source indicated it was closer to 5x, down from the 30x it hovered near in mid-2022, according to Moody’s.” (link)

Arkansas Monticello launches The Legacy Campaign, a five-phase facility improvement project. Areas of need include lights and locker rooms for softball and baseball, softball dugouts, football locker room, upgrades to Steelman Field House, athletic offices and golf resources, scoreboards for basketball, volleyball, baseball and softball, as well as football stadium renovations. AD/FB HC Hud Jackson: “Everybody needs to benefit. [...] We’ve been very fortunate with a group of donors who continue to want to give. [...] Our goal is to get 250 former student-athletes to give $1,000 a year. [...] If we can do that, we feel like we can generate a half a million dollars every year.” (link)

Endeavor met with the NCAA Board of Directors last month to discuss the ongoing media rights deal, per CBS’ Dennis Dodd, who adds: “Speculation is that the current bundle will be split up after it expires in 2024. Industry sources: women's BKB tournament could be worth the amount the entire bundle is getting now – $30M.” (link)

The DII Committee on Infractions finds that Findlay improperly certified eligibility for 82 student-athletes across 11 sports over the course of three years. Penalties include three years probation, a $2,500 fine and vacation of records from contests in which the ineligible student-athletes competed. The case was processed through the negotiated resolution process. (link)

The NCAA is in a trademark dispute with the National Collegiate Pickleball Association on the grounds that the NCPA constitutes infringement, dilution and unfair competition. Loeb & Loeb’s Chicago Managing Partner Douglas Masters, who represents the NCAA, says the NCAA wants NCPA Founder Noah Suemnick to come up with a different name for the organization. Suemnick maintains the USPTO has registered other marks that are more similar to NCAA and, arguably, more likely to cause more confusion. Northeastern law professor Alexandra Roberts tells Sportico’s Michael McCann that the “most important question for infringement is whether the junior user’s use of its mark” – here the NCPA for its tournament and other services specified in the USPTO application – “creates a likelihood of confusion among consumers that it’s associated or affiliated with NCAA or that the tournament is put on or sponsored by the NCAA.” Roberts believes it’s possible but stresses that both marks “seem fairly descriptive” and are probably “different enough for consumers to distinguish them easily.” (link)
